      Scott, since you are the foremost expert on determining the level of Kentucky certified destruction provided by various things that go bang.(among other things) , I have a request.
      I just bought one of those “popcorn cannons” used to puff corn and rice. It goes bang and launches its contents with a prodigious amount of steam when used to puff grain. I got to thinking about the possibility of mounting it on a rifle stock and using it for home defense. Your unique input would be appreciated.

    hey scott, if it makes you feel any safer, the 500 bushwacker is based on the .375 ruger, which itself is capable of handling 62k psi, meanwhile 500SW does around 60k, and usually speaking whenever you taper/neck down a cartridge you increase the pressure when compared to a straight wall, so the 500 BW might have a chamber pressure equal if not even lower than those 62k
    as a side note, that cartridge is absoletly ridiculous, i'm so happy you brought it on the channel😂

    • @koreyhayden1368
      @koreyhayden1368 9 месяцев назад +1

      375 ruger??? I'd hafta research that but, right off the bat that doesn't seem right at all. 375 ruger is is a bigger parent case and is necked. This bushwacker is a straight wall, and 50 cal. More along the lines of a 458 Lott as parent case

      @@koreyhayden1368 yeah... idk, there's not much information out there, but the 375 has the exact same size up to the neck, and 500 BW brass could be made by fire-forming it, in fact prior to having dedicated brass for it, the cartridges were made like that

      @@renaissanceman5847 i know, but usually speaking, the firearm will be designed to operate at the pressure of the cartridge safely, that's why it's often not recomended to use very hot pistol ammo in handguns not designed for it, and the reason you shouldn't use 357 mag in 38 special, but you can shoot 38 in a 357 for instance, even though almost every pistol nowadays can handle at least +P

If memory serves me correctly, he was getting rifle level performance out of this hand cannon. I think the revolver itself was called the Woods White Horse Magnum. He also made one in 45-70. Why? I can stand some recoil but I don't understand why people like punishing themselves. Maybe it's because I started out hunting with a muzzleloader but I'm a fan of placement over insane power. I'd rather have a gun in which I can accurately place a shot every time versus something that has ridiculous power. More middle of the line something like a 6.5-300 vs a 416. Plenty of power and easier to shoot. Like McManus talked about in his books I don't need a gun that will allow me to clap my shoulders. BTW if you haven't read those do yourself a favor and pick them up, they are hilarious. Laughed so hard reading on in a doctors office once that everyone moved to the other side of the waiting area from me. Still makes me chuckle today and that was 30 years ago.

      @@Parents_of_Twins I believe this channel exists for entertainment purposes (and to make money for its creator). I treat it the way I treated Capstick's books on Africa. It is not to be taken too seriously. Given the price of ammunition these days, I rarely shoot anything remotely exotic. I do prefer heavy-for-caliber projectiles, but not punishing recoil. I don't shoot creatures that are a half mile or further away. Bullet placement and penetration are and will always remain king and queen.

      The groin protector is intended to protect your femoral artery from shrapnel, it's a flap of kevlar that is roughly as protective as an old school flak jacket, meaning that it will keep stuff like 9mm and shrapnel from entering your body, but there is no plate, so a nut shot will absolutely still turn the boys into jello.

    Found this in a very well written article.
    From the standpoint of cartridge design, there is no question that the BFR is abundantly capable of housing a .530” diameter round operating at approximately 60,000 psi: it was engineered to do so for the .500 S&W

  • @MaryBrownForFreedom
    @MaryBrownForFreedom 9 месяцев назад +109

    per Wikipedia "The .500 Bushwhacker is designed to operate at comparable chamber pressures to the .500 S&W Magnum. Since the case is simply a lengthened version of the .500 S&W Magnum, the cylinder wall thickness remains the same on a firearm converted to the larger cartridge. Accordingly, the same pressure level can safely be maintained in firearms capable of accommodating the additional cartridge length."

    Scott, do you have a chronograph sponsor like you have a table sponsor?
    I looked up some external ballistics for the .500 Bushwacker, it has the kinetic energy of a .458 Winchester Magnum out of a 26" rifle barrel. To get that performance out of a 10" revolver is crazy.
    The .458 Winchester Magnum has a maximum pressure (SAAMI) of 60,000 PSI. The parent cartridge of the .500 Bushwacker is the .375 Ruger, which has a maximum pressure (SAAMI) of 62,000 PSI. The .500 Bushwacker case is slightly shorter than that of the .375 Ruger, so its case capacity should be pretty much the same as that of a .458 Winchester Magnum. I would guess that would mean the .500 Bushwacker is operating above 62,000 PSI. Not being an expert on interior ballistics, I wouldn't hazard to guess by how much. I think your neck scar is right to twitch a bit.

  • @1014p
    @1014p 9 месяцев назад +7

    So 350 grain hollow point at 2000 fps translates to immediate energy dumping on contact. Good to know if you're trying to stop something from space. Now I would like to see hollow points side by side from all the big bore guns and rifles. I noticed most were brass solids or other solid rounds. Do the jello water though. Might need crowd funding to get enough jugs and the round for each one. Maybe take the shots at 25 yards for a visual view purpose.

    EDIT: One article on The Firearm Blog says that because the brass is thicker, the .500 Bushwhacker can operate at 62,000 psi. They don't cite a source.

    • @danwhite3224

      Would the chance of catastrophic failure in a revolver be lower compared to other guns due to the cylinder gap?

    • @Bacteriophagebs
      @Bacteriophagebs 9 месяцев назад +4

      @@danwhite3224 Not because of the gap, no. If the gun's going to explode, it will do it before the bullet has gotten far enough to cross the gap.
      The gun that nearly killed Scott was that dangerous because it was a single-shot, screw-on-breech gun, so when it failed, there was nothing to stop the breech from going straight back into the shooter. Very few guns are that dangerous to the shooter when they fail.
      A revolver _does_ have a shield behind the cylinder for just that purpose, and since the round at the top of the cylinder would be the one that failed, the rest of the cylinder would mostly protect the shooter's hand.
      But the topstrap of the revolver could still blow backward into the shooter's head and eyes. If you look up images of revolvers that exploded, typically the cylinder is opened up at the top and the topstrap is gone.

      I saw a video from the people that developed the cartridge and I believe they said the same thing. They just used a slower burning powder to take advantage of every last inch of the barrel and get that velocity. 2500fps coming out of a 50 caliber handgun is genuinely ridiculous lol

    • @exothermal.sprocket
      @exothermal.sprocket 9 месяцев назад

      One thing that people may not consider, is just because the cartridge is longer doesn't mean the pressure goes up exponentially. In fact, without changing anything about the .500 S&W Magnum load, simply adding more volume to the case will LOWER the operating pressure. The idea was to lengthen the casing to provide a lot more room for propellant, allowing a lot more bullet acceleration (in a given length barrel). Does that mean the pressure also goes up? Not necessarily. TI2 did their R&D pretty well. I've read that it is actually quite efficient and burns most of the propellant in the casing length, barrel length, and so on. Pressure testing facts would be pretty awesome. Yet, a longer casing doesn't imply the pressure is a single pound higher than the .500 S&W case. Should be obvious without the right kind of powder and load recipe, you can turn an ordinary case into a small charge of firearms breaker (as per many of his videos demonstrating exactly this).

    Damn bro, you handle the recoil from that thing like a beast. Most people cant handle a 357 mag with that much control. The knockdown power of either of those rounds is insane.

    This is an awesome episode. Love the safety precautions. It's always eye opening because there are some things a regular person just wouldn't think about too much. To me, it's every bit as interesting as the guns themselves.
    6:21 And you should feel cool in it. It's safe, and it's responsible. I have the same feeling with my motor bike gear. My bike might look cool, but equally awesome, is some quality gear.
    Honorable people, treat danger with respect.

    The ejector rod on the big fella got a real workout. On the slomo shots it was looking like the cylinder on a 155mm howitzer.

      @@sgtsagara02 I had to watch the slow mo a few times. Your eyes were not playing tricks on you. The hammer was also rebounding like crazy, which I find sketchy as hell. Makes me think the primer was punching back out of the casing and smacking the rear of the gun with enough force to bounce the hammer.
