- Broken installation on Gran Turismo 6, and how to fix it.
Many people (myself included) have had a problem with installing updates on Gran Turismo 6 when starting from scratch. After putting the disk in, it insists on installing 12 (at the time of making this video) updates, which are downloaded, one after another, and then installed in one go. Sadly, at the end of the installation, it gives an error message, and the installation fails.
After some investigation, I've come across a suggested remedy, which is what you see here. You can probably stop watching after the first 5 minutes or so, as you'll have the idea, and only those interested in random Benway rambling need continue watching.
It is becoming common for people to leave comments before actually watching the video, saying "I am having problems installing this game. Please help!" Certainly. WATCH THE VIDEO!
Others have also come back to me, explained that they have followed the instructions in this video, but done things differently, and it didn't work. Can I help them? Certainly. FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS and don't do it differently. If you have tried something different, and it has failed, delete the GAME DATA (not save data) from your hard drive, and start over, following the instructions.

Thank you, this worked for me. A Clean install of GT6 in April 2017, complete with 21 updates (totaling 12GB). It all screws up if left to itself, but this method works a treat. I didn't bother ejecting each time 😀
This does work. I've currently done about half of them. I'm doing 1 or 2 a day just to keep my sanity. You can do the first 6 at once. After that do one at a time. Remember to disable internet connection then launch the game after each one (except the 1st 6 which you can do all together). Also remember to back up & delete your save file before you start this whole process. Stay in front of the TV so that you do not accidentally download more than 1 update at a time (except the 1st 6).

@@dannitron1934 I tried the first six then 2 or 3 at a time and worked perfectly. I think long as you keep them in like 600MB chunks of updates at a time its fine. Just doesn't like doing them all at once.
My updates fail at the 7th update,any idea why?

Even my PS2 fails to play GT4, would be good if you installed it onto a HDD then played it, I've heard loading times are much quicker for GT4 on PS2
Directions
Side Note: DO NOT ENTER the actual game when downloading update.
1) Turn on Internet
2) Download Update
3) Install Update
(DO NOT ALLOW The Next Download to Happen)
4) Turn off Internet
5) Enter Game
6) Exit Game
7) Eject Disc
Repeat 20ish times

Out of curiosity what do you do when one of your consoles dies, do you bin it, keep it for spares or repairs, or sell it as spares or repairs on ebay?
I tried the install 3 times with it failing, then came across your tutorial, I'm passed the halfway mark at this point and it is at least seeming to be taking. So far so good. I'll let you know once it's all in there and up and running. However thank you much for posting this because I was about to give up on it.

For anyone who downloaded the game from PSN instead of using a disc -- delete the broken downloaded game, redownload/install the game, turn off internet connection, launch the game, quit, and then follow the same process.
This is utterly ridiculous and took me from like 10am-7pm to do everything. Pathetic. I'm fine with a few gb's of update since it means the dev's are active, but if I spend all day getting this shit to work only to have the update fail and not allow me to play the game AT ALL, your game is broken. If you have slow internet - hope you have a free weekend!

Mohsin Darr my gf bought for me gt6 and i was proper pissed off when discovered that issue i took game to shop and they replaced it, but problem was still there, i ve deleted all gt6 data and i have installed game again but for updates i turned game off and clicked triangle (option menu) on gt6 file and clicked to search for updates, all 14 updates installed perfectly and game is running now, i hope that was helpful

It is frustrating to have this problem. I'm currently installing the UK version of this game in the USA it's the longest install I've ever sat through. But watching this video is entertaining while this is going on. Thanks for the advice and the comedy! God bless you friend.
Just had to replace the hard drive in my PS3, and even though I jailbroke it and downloaded all the updates in pkg format to skip having to sit through the PS3 downloading them all, updating this game is such a pain lol. I'm glad this video is around to show the proper way to update.

Thank you polyphony.keep in mind this has taken me two tries and corrupted at one point because after the 7-8 hour update my PlayStation shut off whilst I was upstairs for five getting you guessed it a coke.thank you polyphony.i had to delete my save data as well.thanks steve this was a much faster way of doing it.even if it did take long it didn't take as long. :)
I still can't believe how huge those updates are. I guess this is what happens when game developers take unlimited storage and bandwidth for granted and they create incredibly bloated, inefficient code. A far cry from when Activision was able to cram Enduro for the 2600 onto a 4K ROM chip!

I recently got GT6. I too had to download all the 27 Big Ass Updates all at once on start up. Left the thing for 8 hours. Got back to it and it won't start the game, showing errors unable to process downloaded files. Clearly nobody at Polyphony had thought about compiling everything as 1 file. it seems like one of the files had become corrupt and they all didn't sync well with each other. I've decided to play it without ever updating. Didn't want to sit for another 8 hours knowing it'll all be a waste. Greatest ever simulator that don't work puhhh

John Doe ok glad that worked, i did the same thing a day ago and realize this. The BIG giant ones at 1.5 or 2GB worth are specifically system files, which means you have to let them install by themselves. the smaller files at 200-500mb those are add on cars and can be installed all at once. But the most important thing is to let the CD install first, then start updates using the triangle on the CD start screen. I hope this message helps those still struggling. I managed to install 21 udpates and have to say THIS IS THE GREATEST RACING GAME EVER MADE...
I need help tho, I installed 21 updates over night, but as "Normal" the in-game installation fails, I sent my game data to a USB pen drive, And deleted it, now the problem is, How am I going to do one at a time, If I already have them all? How do I delete them so I can do the method?

Finally pulled out my old 60gb PS3 to play some old PS2 titles, thought I’d install GT6 again, and wow what a nightmare I’ve had!

I'm not usually one to be foul mouthed on a video, but Sony can fuck right off if they expect all of their users to go through this shit, rather than just fix it themselves. I'm an Xbox gamer and I bought my first PS3 to try it out and all I've done is troubleshoot one problem after another. It's ridiculous. I'll definitely be returning GT6, as I have GT5 anyway, but I'm qctually on the verge of returning the PS3 too. It's not user friendly at all.

cody2490 I'm not having much fun with it at all. I did a system restore and ended up losing all of the trophies I'd earned. Why does it not sync to the server instantly like on Xbox? The only benefit I've found thus far is Spotify, but I have my PC, phone and laptop for that.
I just got this game off a friend and tried hours to download it . Your way and your humour is very good .
However I have GT5 so will stick with that and give my friend the GT6 back lol

I did what the video said, but at nr.9 update the in-game update thing showed up and the time was 130-140min!?! What did I do wrong? (I have the non-disc version)
just bought this game from gamestop.preowned and having the install failed message on my ps3. I have 21 updates on the game what do I do for this,or just get another game or a better copy

The furthest I have gotten was 1.09,I've been trying this process for weeks
I only started playing this game about a week ago and I'm already beginning to experience how glitchy it really is! I keep getting this glitch where after finishing a race before it displays the results it freezes and everything becomes disabled including the PS button! None the less I continued playing until I got to the GT World Championship where all my hard work came undone! After each race I suspended, saved and reloaded the game after each race to stop this from happening. But then when I tried to load the last race it kept sending me back to a new game sequence! In other words I just takes me right back to the beginning again! So I checked my gaming data on the drive, it's still on there but it's just not loading it as it should do! I don't know if anyone else has had a similar issue but this is very frustrating! My mate is going to assist us with these in game updates next week, but judging from what I've seen here it's going to be a painful process! It makes me so angry why PD didn't address this issues before hand, or do what they did with GT5 and make a complete updated version with all the updates, bug fixes and game mods installed! That would have made life so much easier because as far as I see GT6 has proven to be a failure!
Thank you Steve, this worked for me. For those out there, I downloaded the entire game from PSN. I found that I could download/install multiple updates as long as I did not exceed 4gb total. I never tried above 4gb. This method of enabling/disabling internet worked :)
This is one thing I absolutely hate about modern gaming. Updates on top of updates. I can plug in my SNES (my favorite console of all time) and just get into the game. Can't beat that :D
browland1 I agree completely. On PC gaming, you expect it, but console gaming was supposed to be about immediacy, and they've gone and wrecked it.

DJ Gus D In realtime... with only 12 updates (there are more now) it took me something like 8 hours. It requires you to keep an eye on it, as you have to log it on and off of the internet, and other things. It's a total pain in the arse. This may be quicker or slower for other people, depending on internet connections, and Polyphony's server load at any given time.

I don't know, to be honest. I'd say you need to have the first part from the disk fully installed, so if that involves the screen adjust (it's months since I did it, so don't remember what comes when), then I'd say yes. I'm far from an authority on it though, and just posted what worked for me.
Cheers for the info bro, the game works fine on my mates less used ps3 so I reckon it must be my ps3. Just watched a clip that said to load the disc with your ps3 on it's back if it's not reading dual layer discs.

My 12 year old self, would not have the patience to put up with this. I would have given up on the game, gone out skateboarding or something. As an older adult we have the patience to put up with this, but a pre-teen would not.
Sloppy game development and coding, expecting people to download 4-5 GB of "Updates" is ridiculous.
Downloading updates in the background is a minor improvement, not everyone can afford, their console to chew up bandwidth in the background.
For example Rogers Cable one of the largest internet providers in Canada chargers $51.99 with a cap of 25 GB per month. Which is not much if a game is going to chew up 5gb of that cap.

I just bought the game today (9th September 2015) and if I disable my internet connection and start the game the first thing that pops up is "Select Language" but I can't select anything cause the game kinda freezes but the ps3 doesnt. Is there a way to get past the "Select Language" screen?

I think that for this, they should accept recall of diskand give disk with already installed patches. However, I don't understand why the Digital Version is not coming fully patched installed... Why? Like you would buy it, and it would be already up to date. That seriously is super wrong.

Why was this suggested to me when not only I have watched before, but I have commended on it too. 6 fraking years ago. Also, I checked no GT6 videos, searched for none, neither racing games in general or even cars.

9ElevenGamer It seems totally wrong to me that we can't even control what icons appear on out XMBs, especially when we don't even own the game. With retro games, I can hide that Barbie and the 12 Princesses GBA cart that's in my collection :D

Missed so much of GT6 online due to this issue when downloading then installing all those damn updates and fail. At that point the GT6 game disc which was only a month old no longer worked. The game disc in the middle hole where you grab it had a gray colored ring which led me to believe that the Blu-ray lens burned it. It was the second game already with that gray colored ring in the middle that stopped working. I avoided using that Blu-ray drive and just installed CFW. The GT6 updates where much easier to install after that and got online for a small few months before the servers got taken down. Fun times, I miss it. Also, installing an SSD hard drive was the best thing to do and much faster.
This is utter bullshit.... I have done this 3 times now, and still the same message at the end!!! Screw it, playin GT5!!!!!!

the best thing is they launched a 12gb ssd ps3 version that wont be able to get handle all this crap and players will be out of updates, which will let them out of online mode!!!

Steam forced me to install it to play Morrowind (a single player game), and towards the end of the Steam installation it blue-screened my computer.
That's much better than pressing one button and having the game work, isn't it?

I just had to re-install from scratch from the Disc in my PS3 because some tracks were not loading due to file corruption. I have not followed this method from video. I have disabled energy saving options, deleted all Game DATA (not the game progress saved data). Then inserted the disc, pressed triangle, looked for updates, downloaded all , then when opened the game it started the installation with the message of 800minutes to go , and left overnight running all the 21 update installation at once. I woke up and YES. All good.

Lol i just bought the game yesterday and have 23 updates remaining which is more than 10+gb of updates with 55 megabits wireless connection but thank god i have no problem of installing error
I remember when I got GT6 and the installation wouldn’t get anywhere I just returned the game, I would get this game again but I don’t want to wait a month for it to finish (I know it doesn’t take that long), in fact I bet I could Call of Duty Black Ops 4, Call of Duty WW2, and the upcoming Modern Warfare 2019 plus all of the DLC for Black Ops 4 and WW2 and I wouldn’t get any progress from the Gran Turismo 6 installation, thank goodness I have Forza Motorsport 3 and 7 + Horizon 1 and 4, and even Gran Turismo 3, 4, and 5🙂
Shocking hey. I made the mistake of trying to play this (first time in a while) on the actual day my mate came over and sod me we had to play on the X360 and Wii U coz the PS3 decided to take 4.5hours to patch GT6. Shit! Shit! Shit! This is what is putting me off current gen, amongst a few things.
JUST TO LET ALL OF YOU KNOW THIS METHOD WORKED FOR ME THE FIRST TIME MAKE SURE YOU FOLLOW ALL THE STEPS THE GUY DID IN THIS VIDEO I DID ALL 21 UPDATES ONE AT A TIME AND IT WORKED THANSK A LOT!!! Good luck to yall.

It can be done in just 4 steps thanks to @Brenno Almada & @JoseFernandezMartos:
1) Download and install the first 6 updates -> 6 / 21. Cancel when downloading 7/21. Enter the game for installation.
2) Download and install the next 4 updates -> 4 / 15. Cancel when downloading 5/15. Enter the game for installation.
3) Download and install the next 6 updates -> 6 / 11. Cancel when downloading 7/11. Enter the game for installation.
4) Download and install the last 5 updates -> 5 / 5. Enter the game and enjoy!

i started from V 1.01 and it works until i hit V 1.22 . thanks man i had the game for ove a year with V 1.01 and now i can finally play with Newer content and cars !!!
Okay so I've downloaded and redownloaded these patches about 6 times over and have tried multiple different ways. Inside and outside the actual game and both times they end up failing and well I can't even play the game unless I just play it without the patches. It's frustrating as you may already know. Now when I try to download each patch separately as you suggested in your video. After I cancel the next download and turn off the internet and eject disk and everything and play the game I get this message saying the game data is from a newer version please exit the game and update. So it wont install the game in game unless I have all 17 downloads already downloaded. Now I've done as it has said several times and well no luck. How were you able to download them separately without getting this message?
Christopher Elisea I've never seen that message... it's a totally new one on me. I wish I knew what to suggest, but this video is merely the method suggested by Polyphony, and I have no specialist knowledge. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

7:17 My PS3 can't install this update, the download is fine, but when installing it stops at 14% and says that the data is corrupt.
+Steve Benway. BTW I have 21 updates to do, and I am currently on number five. All is well so far! However, I would like to add an IMPORTANT bit of info. The new player must complete FOUR steps in the beginning, in order to view the "Update Details" window (where it lists what features are included in the new update) at the Home screen confirming that the new update works. Not doing these steps FIRST could be confusing, as the game would not display the same screens the video shows.
0. Make sure you are disconnected from the internet before doing the steps!
(Settings> Network Settings> Internet Connection> Disable)
1. Entering name
2. Playing tutorial race
3. Buying first car
4. Once you are back at the Home screen, press the Start button, then select Save (at the bottom of the list)
Thx steve i didn't do your method but it worked.when i bought the game i downloaded sony update then when it wast time to download the game update it said update installation failed.So i erase dgame date and redownloaded the sony update by pressing triangle check for update.Now its working

Yeah. there are more updates since this video was made, several years ago. I've tried and failed too, though I put it down to my less than ideal broadband. Sorry to hear it didn't work for you either :(
The worst part of the PS3 was all the updates and their size. All 360 updates are tiny and you only need the latest one. Sony heavily messed this up
That can be an upside or a downside depending on how you look at it. The Xbox 360 caches updates and they have to be 5MB or lower meaning games pretty much stay the same from when they were launched. Also because the updates are cached, once XBL goes down, you're going to be left with some buggy games. Though on the plus side the updates are tiny.
The PS3 actually downloads and installs the updates with no limit on their size. This means games drastically change from their launch to now and with the PS3 HDD backup, you can preserve the updates. However the downside is you're going to have to sit through hours of updates.
I suppose it depends on how much you value the updates for your games, both have their pro's and cons.
I NEED HELP, as soon as i go to begin by clicking triangle and "check for update" it tells me the newest update has been installed already. Then i go to just play the game and it says i need to update again.... help
came home from work, payd for gt6.. put it on download over the night, turned on my tv, download complete! i was like jaaaaay! so i turned of everything and went to work lookin forward to play gt6 when i get home, when i got home i realised that there where 20 updates.. may have to wait to play the game to when i get home from work tomorow then.. :(
My thing doesn't work. In downloading the first update, it goes way beyond 100%, to 101%, 102% and so on. Then, all of a sudden, it gives me 80029564 error, of corrupted data. It's driving me crazy.

so do i update 1-5 then disable internet or do I have to update 1 then cancel, update 2 then cancel so on... so on?
It said I'm on the most recent update but then I play and it makes update and makes no progress wtf
if i'm stuck on an installation screen saying 80 mins left but there hasn't been any movement in the bar what should I do? I've done four of the updates individually and the one that is stuck was about 914mb. I've quit and tried again but nothing, i still get this loading screen and i really don't want to have to delete everything again just to get this problem.

I downloaded the game from PS3 Store yesterday and made the mistake of downloading all updates at once. Took forever! I let it install them when I went to bed, but woke up and had error failed. So now I'm reinstalling game after deleting it, and going to do updates like you did, 1 by 1...I miss the old days of gaming where all you had to do was put in a game and play. Back then, there wasn't any install errors and downloads...Hope this works.

and just to mentioned that when i am checking for updates on my game details it says your game it has the last update or something like that , but whenever i try to launch the game weather i turn off or on the WiFi it won't start and giving me the installing window for around 20 minute untill it tells me Error and Failed !!!! i am so pissed i tried everything ,, am i missing something !
what a joke. I just bought the game yesterday and it wont even start downloading the updates. 21 to do. any newer better ways to fix this?
+Steve Benway my GT6 says to do 21 updates ... it tooked an entire night but at update number 9 it's appeared an error. So, now that I found your video, can I follow your same procedure ???
i hit the check for updates and its says i have the latest version (1.22) but when i entered the game it show me the error installing the update help me

So I'm doing this myself and have found out that you can do multiple small packages at a time. I think there's a threshold on what the PS3 can do at one time. It doesn't help that GT does a HDD install for things like tracks and such.
It seems like i got it im doing it individually now but on your video it doesnt show if i have to update the game when im online or offline.??? Cause your it appears to play single player or make a lobby mines appears as the story mode i dont know why?

That last download is probably as you said one huge graphic/object database that they are just replacing the whole thing, very slack of them. Totally up to the game developer.
The PS4 is supposed (hearsay don't have one) to be greatly improved, so it must give the developers a lot more support for breaking things down into smaller chunks.
I think the install copied the file (which was probably compressed), but I think then it has to unpack it ready to use.
That was a damn lot of downloads in the end, there really can't have been that much on the disc that wasn't replaced by the updates.
i installed all the updates an the box in game about updating is still comming up and it wont finish loading...
