      I have a friend who is now selling an E39 M5. He wants to exchange it for a newer M model. He found a pre-redesign 2008 E90 M3. He gave up the E60 M5 because it is unreliable. Do you think the E90 M3 with a manual transmission would be a good replacement for the E39 M5?

    Lol, I can't believe you'd take the RS over the M3🤣, the only reason I can think why is for practical reasons, the RS is cheaper to run 😛
    That aside, I prefer the coupe version (so that's the one I bought), the saloon version just looks a bit too ordinary at the back to me, but each to their own.
    Anyway, interesting video, pity you didn't take the engine to 8k though in the video!😉
    Oh btw the 0-60 for the DCT version is about 4.4s, 4.6s is for 0-100 kph.........those 0.2s count!😁

      I very much like the M3, but it's fast Fords all the way for me and I do feel there's more drama in the Focus RS than in the M3, albeit the M3 is fasted once up in the revs.

      Run it as a 2nd car, keep the miles low, less money spent on fuel, tyres, servicing and better for resale value, SORN it in the winter to keep it clean and save from some of the ridiculous cost of the road tax (now nearly £700 for 1yr!!😱 ). Just drive it for the fun drives and not for commuting where you can't really enjoy it anyway!
      Once you get past the 1st years steep insurance cost (unless you already have a 2nd car), then the cost drops off a lot with 1st yrs NCB.
      That's what I did anyway, I don't know if that strategy would bring it within reach of you, but food for thought for you.
      That said, when I bought mine at the end of 2019 it cost me £14.7k (fairly typical at the time), now it would be £18-20k

      @Assimilator1 Год назад +2

      Wrong on the last point (to some degree), the clearances on some engines weren't enough, so even if you warm it up properly you can still have excessively worn bearings on many engines. Of course not warming it up will accelerate wear!
      Agreed about the RS vs M3 comment though, I literally said wtf when he said that 😉 lol, and I am a Brit.

      As I owned some 12 BMWs and still do own 4 M3s (E30, E36, E46, E90) I heard this story about rod bearings for decades (also for the other engines). However, none of them ever failed. I came across too many salesman trying to sell me their labor hours. That doesn't mean it doesn't exist though, but you have to "do your best" to ruin them. Greetz from a Frisian American!

    The E90 M3 was a dud. There is a reason it is the only 8 cylinder M3. BMW learned very quickly the POWER and future revenues were in the N54. Hence, it built up from it for the future M cars. As a matter of fact, the M3 was such a disaster on the M badge reputation, that BMW had to come up with a M1 car with a N54 boosted up, to draw in and prepare BMW enthusiasts for the getting rid of the 8 cylinder moving forward. Great strategy it was. All M engines now have the building blocks of power the N54 established as the elements for an M car. I own a Z4 and a 335xi 6MT N54. Both are Stock, No mods whatsoever, the cars really don't need them. They are phenomenal as they are. I daily drive them. The weather decides which one comes out of the garage. :) .

    • @Omegaman1969
      @Omegaman1969 Год назад +7

      Boosted cars are junk, a high revving beast like the E90 is much more fun to drive. Having owned both I would go for the S65 engine every time, it was engine of the year for 5 years in a row for damn good reason. Plus an M car needs its own engine S designation or it is not a true M car. The N54 is used in many models because it's a mass produced engine.

    • @cornishcarcollectors
      @cornishcarcollectors  Год назад +7

      Thanks for the comment, albeit I cannot agree that the E90 M3 was a dud... I believe time and values will show the only 8-cylinder M3 ever to be built will go on to become a true (and valuable) modern classic. It may not be the quickest of the M3s, but unique and pioneering cars find a following and the E90 certainly has that. Thanks for watching.

    • @Assimilator1
      @Assimilator1 Год назад +1

      A dud? A disaster? What on earth do you base that on? What absolute rubbish! lol
      Was it very expensive for BMW to build engines especially for M cars, and therefore make them less profitable? Most probably! Do they use lots of fuel? Yep!
      But the high revving snappy response and amazing sound added to the M badge rep 😛
      So those downsides combined with the general push for better MPG and CO2 emissions was the reason they went to S55, oh and I'm sure the fact it's much easier to have various levels of power with a turbo engine was a significant factor too.
