The factory Porsche sports exhaust system on my 911 996 Carrera was rusted and in need of replacement, so I've used the opportunity to turn to aftermarket options in order to provide a little more bark to my 911's soundtrack.
I went for the Dansk Sport exhaust, a popular choice among many Porsche 996 owners. But is the system any good? I find out with a direct head-to-head comparison between the factory setup and aftermarket system, featuring before and after videos of start-up, rev, pull away, and in-gear acceleration all with my own 911.
What do I make of the change on my 996? And which system do you think is better?

The “FisterD” or “Gundo hack” muffler mod is the best choice for 996 or 997.1 in my mind, and happily is also the cheapest solution. Basically it’s a mod that partially bypasses the muffler, and is named after 2 guys on the Porsche forums who figured it out or did it first. The noise is glorious & there’s no drone unless you’re cruising above 4K. You can get the mod done locally or do it through the business Fister built around it in the US. I had a local muffler shop mod mine a year ago and I love it more than any other aftermarket exhaust I’ve heard. It basically changes the stock exhaust so that it’s the same as the Porsche sport exhaust under hard acceleration when the vacuum operated butterfly valve flips open.

Yes also did the gundo "PS exhaust" version on my -02 and I would definitely prefer a bit more sound. But On the other hand, when travelling you will get more drone on a louder exhaust.

The gundo hack in my opinion is too noisy and has zero power gain. Moreover if your exhaust are corroded you will need to replace them anyway

Hi Lee, thanks for organising the Cobham meet last month. After a lot of research I went for the Miltek mufflers (UK based). I wanted an old skool air-cooled sound and these fitted that soundtrack - more of a deep bark through the rev range. Subtley quieter on the cruise without any drone. If you search youtube on 996 rally cars (admitedly most are GT cars, you get a similar soundtrack). Been running these for over 3 years now and had no problems, just the glorious unmistakable sound. Next time I'll give you a demo.

Watching with interest. According to my local specialist (jasmine) my 996 has a sports exhaust of indeterminate origin. It emits a glorious bark getting better when hot. Noise tested at Oulton Park a couple of weeks back resulted in a 101db pass. My 46M3 is at around 87 with standard exhaust. I still adore the Irish green paint 👌🏻

I have a 997.1 c2s. Had PSE that rusted - opened in the seams. After lots of research and doubds about where to go I landed on FVD Brombacher valved with 200 cell cats. FANTASTIC - much better sound than PSE. Only problem is that I get flagged for noise when on track with the valves open. But I just run with the valves closed. The Porsche ECU automatically opens the valves at abt 5000rpm even if I have the sport button off, but this is solved by just pulling the vacum hose from the vacum switch (both sides and then connect together). The sound is now absolutely fantastic. Just love it!

Hi Lee. Thank you for the videos I really enjoy watching them. I have a 996 C4S and spent a long time working out which new silencers to go for. In the end I chose DesignTex valvetronic silencers from Design911. As my C4S didn’t have a PSE I fitted an after market switch into the dash board, you really wouldn’t know it wasn’t factory fitted. The DesignTex silencers sounds amazing and I would really recommend them and the switch as it is good to turn them off on long motorway journeys or if leaving for a drive early Sunday morning! Wish I’d known about your 996 meet up, have now followed you on Instagram and will look forward to next years 996 meet up.

I recommend looking at cold air intakes if what you are after is theatre and drama. They don't do anything performance wise but they definitely add a nice resonance. I have a full Gemballa exhaust system and even with this I noticed a definite improvement in the noise of my car when I added the cold air intake.

It’s quieter because your old mufflers had gaping holes down the sides. Break these open at the seams like your old ones and they will also be loud. Or, I’m sure you can still do the gundo even though they are stainless.

Also fitted a pair of stainless manifolds I got with the car. They have been on the car for 4 months now and the stainless still looks good.
I agree with you about the sound. Still quiet but no drone. Just a bit more rasp to the sound.

Hi Lee. Just by way of an alternative I run my C2 with Direnza tubular manifolds and the Top Gear “Loud” backboxes. For myself I love the sound, a real “BWAAAARK” under full throttle but no drone while cruising. I definitely concur with your observation as regards being MUCH more free reving too.
One thing you may want to consider for more sound is to add in some sport cats to your Dansk boxes. I’m told that these (Especially the 63mm tube ones) add a lot of volume and might be just what you need to up the noise level if you feel the current boxes are a bit sedate.
Really sad I missed your Cobham meet-up. I’m afraid mine was in having the Öhlins fitted (It was worth it!)

They give better throttle response, a more controlled and connected feeling through the corners as well as giving more engine noise in the cabin. i have the original Porsche 996 fold exhaust, which you can open and close. maximum sound and about 109 db. all officially approved. maybe you have to look for that in the uk. costs a lot, but there are other aftermarket suppliers. Some do prepare to their regular exhausts an additional pipe, which is almost same like the fold exhausts. Not that loud, but better than nothing.

Great 996! I upgraded my last 996 with the sport (louder) version from Cargraphic. Sound was just similar to „Klappenauspuff“ from Porsche - but a bit louder.
After Cayenne, next Porsche will be a 996 again. Thought about the 4S or 996 3,4 again. Pro 3,4: I like the puristic style. And I am thinking about deleting the lower front console like in the 996 GT3 - looks great and saves weight.

@@9WERKSTV I'm on my second 997 so have no firsthand 996 experience, but I'm also an advocate for OEM! My 997.2 T4S came with standard exhaust. I had to have some engine work done under warranty which necessitated the exhaust system removal, so with the labour covered and 10% PCGB discount, I upgraded to the PSE - it still wasn't cheap! It didn't sound much different inside the car on or off. However, I was at a Goodwood track day with it (a charity day with all sorts of more exotic cars than mine), and when I came into the paddock, there was a guy standing in "my" garage. I could see he wanted to talk to me. He had popped in on his way to golf to see what was happening as he did often. He wanted to say that of all the cars he had observed in that session, mine sounded the best (from the pit wall). He told me he'd had a string of G-series 911s but was now in an F12! I thought it was high praise. I know there are plenty of exhaust companies out there, but we buy Porsches for all the amazing engineering and handling characteristics, so why don't trust them to make a good sports exhaust? I'm fortunate to drive a 997.1 GT3 CS now (I met you briefly at Castle Coombe last year) and that's on another level noise-wise - 103 dB to be precise! I hope you find a solution with which you're happy soon.

I am using the FVD Sport exhaust, which sounds really nice, a bit louder than stock, but still not very loud. I don't hear much more from inside the car, but with the windows cracked open, the tone is much nicer. I might go a little louder next time. I live in Germany, so I have to find a TüV approved set.
You might also try to replace some intake bits if you want to increase the volume a bit. I have the orange cap mod (topspeedauto.com/porsche-996-997-carrera-c2-c4-non-turbo-upgrade-air-intake-box-hose-kit-in-various-colors/) and a replacement airbox-to-manifold tube, the Schubert Soundschnorchel (www.sft.cc/14_porsche_soundsysteme.html). These also improve the sound, although I am not sure if I won or lost a few HP, so YMMV.

The catalytic elements have likely turned into potatoes. Replace with high flow cats, something like the X pipe from Design911. This should add some sound as well.

They just sound raspier to me in the video.

2 inch gundo hack on standard mufflers, can't beat the sound and no resonating.

Contrary to popular belief it is easier than one would think for a 996 to suffer from a reduction in horsepower while in pursuit of sound quality (even when using some of the popular brand names). As quiet as it’s kept its hard to beat the anemic sounding stock boxes from a free flowing hp perspective. Surprisingly little to no hp reduction has been shown when using cheap Chinese Ebay full throated boxes (go figure).
In this case, other than satisfying an MOT requirement the sound chamber is underwhelming better luck next time

I don't mind suffering the loss of a few hp in the name of noise… one day our cars will be silent, I want that tone in my ears while it's still acceptable!

Keep them and add 100-cell sport cats from Design911. If still not happy add new stainless steel headers.

I hear ya, my issue is I'm having to invest more into perfecting the sound when there are other mufflers out there which do a good enough job as-is.

That Nine Eleven Guy yes, but eventually you will appreciate the freer-flowing exhaust and engine responsiveness such a sport-cat will give you, besides the sport cat is probably also going to give you the sound you’re looking for, and lower emissions.

I've ran Dansk Sports silencers with standard Cats and I thought they sounded great up until the day the flexi snapped. When they were removed, I found out why at 5yrs old they sounded great... The inners had turned the cans into maracas!
Checkout my vids for the new setup - Milltek Cup silencers and Eurocupgt 200cell Cats 😎🤟🏼 @back2burton

Ive got the dansk super sounds on mine but with the design tek 200 cell cats and x pipe. Its gotten louder as times gone on, but its waaaay beter than the silencer bypass i bought it with! I've got the design tek manifolds to go on next but apparently the drivers side one isnt such a great fit, we'll see.ruclips.net/video/t_Z0AeFp4zk/видео.html

My 996 exhaust has the Gundo hack done to it, sounds louder than stock and pretty "meaty". Just uploaded a clip: ruclips.net/video/Wo3jSv_bBL8/видео.html
