I just ordered a pair of these for my 01 996. Thanks for the great video. I've thought the 2 things I'd change on my 996 were the sound of the exhaust and the head unit stereo.
Perfect description and review on this mod. I just picked up my 996 4S here in NY and I am officially sold on these! You've gained a subscriber. More Porsche vids plzzz
Great idea on the upside down bolt on the muffler bracket. I did exactly the same last time I took them off and definetely makes the job lot easier in the future. I've been putting off this mod but finally motivated to do it. I will do it myself though. I also have an '03 C4S but in seal grey and with 2010 C4S 10 spoke 19' wheels. Great video!
I guess im asking the wrong place but does someone know of a way to get back into an Instagram account? I was stupid lost my password. I would appreciate any help you can offer me.
@Preston Immanuel i really appreciate your reply. I found the site on google and Im in the hacking process now. Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
I appreciated your video and several others but yours gave me the information I needed to contact Fister and go to his shop and meet with him Great guy and I had bought the Beluga Straight pipe muffler delete and had them installed while Fister did the mod on my mufflers. I was so relieved to get the Fister mod done and on my car after the straight pipes ( Too Loud ) The Fister D mod was just Perfect. for my 2000 Carrera 996 Cabrolet Thanks for sharing your informative video. It really helped make my decision. Bill Wood Napa
Having done this mod myself, whomever installed your bumper didn't reinstall the bumperettes properly. The bottom needed to be pushed in futher. Hope they don't fall off while you are driving.
Glad it helped you! I would think he can ship to Australia, however it probably won't be cheap. I'd suggest giving him a call. You could probably save some money by selling your current stock mufflers locally and just paying the non-core price for a set of Fisters, rather than shipping your current ones all the way back.
Looks like you have the Gundo hack. Fister does replicate the PSE type pipe without the valve which was his first type mod. Then the Gundo hack (some guy in NJ) came along with the short pipe between input and output pipes that at higher RPM allows more than 75% bypass. At idle it drops to about 30% bypass. Fister started doing the Gundo hack after he got requests for it so now he does both. There is even a combo of both hacks but I’ve been told it’s redundant as it can cause weird mid range power loss as exhaust flow from two ports can cause backflow issues. I have the 2” pipe Gundo hack and it’s very loud at WFO. I’ve got a video of the sound on my page of the sound it makes on the track and another in my garage parked. Cheers.
Haha. You are 100% going to love them. They sound soooooooo good. Every single time you start your car you're going to smile, even more than you do already.
Great video - seems like the mod + cores is almost $1k, at that price it seems like you're close to getting a CBE, but I haven't done a ton of research. Nice video though, great job explaining it and showing the sounds.
Hey Josh. You're right, it ended up costing in the 1k range with shipping once it was all said and done because I didn't have suitable cores. I considered some aftermarket exhaust options that were in that price range, but ultimately settled on the Fister setup because it is very close to the factory PSE, is extremely well reviewed by other 911 owners, and gave more of a growl and less of a bumblebee sound.
Good point. In this particular video the engine was cold and I always take it easy until it is fully warmed up. I have a few videos of it on the track screaming down a straight. I'll try to upload some of those. It sounds awesome though, I assure you.
I was looking to upgrade my 996, and im trying to decide weather is fister mod or cargraphic exhuast ? Sound really good tho !! Let me know what you think - Mahalos - Bubba
I've never heard the cargraphic one so I can't speak to it. But, I can say that Fister was awesome to deal with, and the sound was absolutely wonderful. Plus, since it is basically a stock exhaust system, it didn't have any negative impact on resale value of the car. If/when I purchase another 911 I wouldn't hesitate to go with a Fister exhaust again.
Hey James. I never get tired of it - it sounds awesome and I rarely listen to music now as I prefer to hear it. When you're just cruising and you need it to quiet down a bit, just roll up the windows and drive a bit less aggressive - that's what I do when I need to take a call. As far as holding up, I haven't inspected it but I see no reason why it won't last as long or longer than a factory muffler. Darin did a nice job of cleaning it up and painting it.
So if I already have PSE, Fister can mod it so it’s louder than when I have PSE on, or does it just make it so I don’t have to hit the button to turn on the PSE?
Hey Scott. Best to call Darin at Fister and ask. I’m pretty sure the Fister mod is louder than PSE because the bypass avoids the muffler completely. PSE is a pretty desirable and somewhat rare option though, so if you have it you may be lowering your resale value by modifying or removing it.
Probably speaker related - try using headphones. I can assure you the difference is incredible (in person) and if you're looking for a more aggressive sound without going too loud and making it annoying to drive, this is a great solution. EDIT: At idle it is almost the same, the big difference is only noticed when you're giving it gas or wide open throttle - you will get some nice burbles and pops at low speed in parking lots though.
Hey Sean - it depends if you use your own mufflers or get new ones (I believe they start around $300-400). Check out the Firster Motorsports site for more info. As far as smog, it shouldn't have any effect. Nothing is changing except for the routing around the mufflers, Firster are based in California so they can give you all the details.
They're very similar but slightly different. It has been years since I've looked into it and my memory is a bit fuzzy. If I remember correctly, Fister is a partial bypass between the inlet and outlet of the muffler. This is how the PSE Porsche sport exhaust worked except it had a solenoid to turn it off and on. Gundo cuts a new port in the muffler and runs from there to the outlet. Since the port is coming out of the muffler, all exhaust goes in. However the Gundo port is at like the halfway point of the exhaust flow in the muffler. So nothing bypasses the muffler, but some exits early. I personally have never heard a Gundo exhaust. I absolutely loved my Fisters though - would highly recommend. A perfect balance of aggressive and throaty but tame enough to drive daily and not be annoying. As far as doing it on just one side - I don't know for sure but I personally wouldn't recommend it. My understanding is that back pressure balance between the cylinder banks is important.
Not quite the same, but very similar results. The gundo hack branches off the closed off port for a whereas this connects the inlet and outlet for a partial bypass. You can absolutely have a local shop do this, however my core mufflers were rusted and I wanted them from Fister.
Based on my understanding of how they both work, and from what others have said online, the answer is yes. However I can't say for sure because I've never compared them side by side. I would imagine they are very similar with the Fister mod being slightly louder.
I did the same. Love the Fister sound. I went with the black finish. Couldn’t be happier. Thanks for the video!
Michael Bath did this mod on our 85 3.2 borla muffler , 20 $ !!! Go to Arthur Mchugh on utube! I think you will like it 😄😄

You're going to love them. You may decide not to bother with the head unit because you'll like listening to the exhaust so much.
The smiles and giggles says it all! I love it!!
That's a nice mod, and thanks for sharing. I didn't know about Fister until I saw this.
