    Is the Gundo hack worth it?! I've had the mod done to my Porsche 996 Carrera so in this video I show you how it's done, before giving you a comprehensive review of the new exhaust note, featuring cold-start and rolling acceleration comparisons against both the factory OE system and bolt-on Dansk Sport mufflers.
    This cost-effective mod has put a HUGE smile on my face and has to be the best-value upgrade I've done to my Porsche 996, but it's not for everybody, so I've weighed up the pros and cons so you can decide for yourself if it's worth it for any Porsche.

    Definitely the best bang for your buck mod on a 996! I did the same mod on my 996 a few years ago, (1:5 inch pipe) and it still brings a smile to my face everytime I drive it. This is the way it should've sounded like from the factory. Keep up the good work Lee! 👏 Cheers from down under 👍

    My 996.2 C2 came with the gundo hack and a Dansk back box. Sound is low when leaving for work at 5am but accelerating through the gears entering the motorway is fabulous. It is compulsory to have the window half down when doing so! As my grandson says "You never get tired of that noise granda".

    You missed out on listing one of the MAJOR issues with the Gundo hack: you will definitely drive at a higher rpm just to hear that sweet Germanic music.
    By far the most appealing mod I've ever done to ANY car. While tuning my turbo cars has produced more power, the sound from the Gundo hack is just perfect for the factory 315hp. Not too loud. Not trying to be anything more than it is. No pops. No bangs. It's very mature, and sounds great above 6k under an overpass!

    Great video Lee and great to see you with a smile back on your face where Little Irish is concerned. Welcome to the Gundo club. Had mine about 18 months now and still have the same smile I just saw on your face every time I drive it.. I can honestly say the radio has not be switched on once in 18 months, the window is always slightly ajar and the car is always kept on boil at 3 - 5,000 rpm. Such a no brainer mod & 10/10 for enjoyment factor. Hopefully catch up with you on the road somewhere soon.

    Totally agree with your comments Lee. The 1.5 inch bypasses on my Dansk Sports sound exactly the same and best bang for buck. Lovely. Only downside as you say is track day noise limits. I had to cancel a generous 105dB track day after my personal dB tester said I was borderline and I couldn’t risk it.

I use Final cut for editing my shows and there is good sound plugins to help with noise and problems within this editor... FCX is great for multicam edit etc and if you have lots of sound then an audio editor like twisted wave. If i am scoring for film or shows i use my daw(cubase pro) for this then bring it all into FCX for the final cut. Great show lee...

    My 99 996 C2 had this gundo hack done on Cargraphic ETR (their middle noise) silencers before I bought it. I recently had TopGear equal length manifolds fitted and it has changed the noise and made it slightly higher pitched, but more characterful in the low-mid range.
    Before the manifold change it tested at 102dB at Brands Hatch, fine for their 105dB sessions.

    I had 2 993's, a 95 C2 and at another location I had a 96 C4S - i had both of their mufflers cut open - holes punched in the baffles and tig welded backup...looked like they weren't touched but had a deeper throaty (light V8) rumble... loved them. Wonder if it would make a difference 997 or 993 I don't see why it wouldn't be the same...just mufflers.

    In the first start up clip, of the gundo hack; I noticed your car has the same weird rattle or noise from the left side, as my car does. Any ideas what it is? Did this occur after the Gundo, or was it present before? Thanks

    • @benbomcars
      @benbomcars 2 года назад

      Probably loose chain tensioners causing rattle - my 996 has the same thing! Tensioners are oil fed and don't always hold their tension when the car is off for an extended time. Once they fill with oil again after starting the car the sound should always go away. If not, probably another issue.

    A great video Lee, thanks. I'm wondering what the difference is between performing this upgrade on the exhaust versus some sort of induction modification.

    • @9WERKSTV
      @9WERKSTV  2 года назад

      @@9WERKSTV Thanks Lee. I appreciate the effort you put in.
      I’m just thinking about the soundtrack. If you look at 4:46 in the vid below , you’ll see what I mean.
      ruclips.net/video/4x-UzNCwk2g/видео.html
      Even the “mythbuster” type vids that “prove” that the induction kits (e.g. K&N) reduce power, state that the soundtrack is improved. I’ve never seen anyone compare the induction soundtrack improvements versus the exhaust soundtrack improvements.
      And I’m guessing the induction sound improvement will carry less risk for track days as it’s more in the cabin than external? I have no direct experience in either and so am guessing.

    a lot of people can't get over the 996 head lights I personally don't mind them. the thing that keeps me away is the interior design, a lot of it is the dash & buttons. Recaro sportster cs are expensive but I think they would go along way especially if they had Porsche style fabric upholstery

    Good that it doesn't drone, and also, IMO, that it doesn't pop and bang, which I think gets annoying fast. Sounds good. However, for my tastes, it adds too much bass. Again, for my tastes, I thought the Dansk mufflers had the the right tone; probably a bit too quiet to hear in the cabin, so finding a way to amplify that sound would be for me. Maybe the bass/treble factor comes down to the size of the pipe used for the Gundo hack? Still, I'd probably be afraid to ruin the Dansk sound. Out of the various exhaust systems, I tend to be drawn to the Top Gear system.

    I have a 996.2 cab...which is standard spec and I am very happy with it. Chris at Wrightune takes care of it.
    I follow you on Instagram ( which I really don't get on with....nightmare to navigate).
    I'd be interested to know if any other 996 owners are quite happy with their car in standard spec?
    For me, the badge and its heritage is its gravitas. Even folk who are not into cars will know what it is because of its iconic status.
    Personally I don't think it needs anything else to enhance it...but of course mine may be a minority view?
    We all probably had hot hatches back in the day and would mod them to sound more awesome than they actually were...ohh the follys of youth ? :)
