Gene's blast has been some next level shit since 1986. What a fucking monster! After all of these years his unrelenting endurance, timing, control, and creativity have remained ever present. He also plays with as much ball crushing power as ever! Truly a once in a life time drummer for metal. We're lucky to have him! \m/ \m/
Gene has one of the best snares. I've always loved that kind of sound in metal, too often snares in metal tend to lack that almost piercing sound to cut through the rest of the kit. They just end up blurring into kick and toms.
I agree! Gene is a metal legend. I believe he is playing a pearl free floating snare here. Always thought those were great sonding snares! They were discontinued for awhile but i think they are back.
The greatest. Dark Angel, Death, Testament, Strapping Young Lad, Dethklok etc.. Class, speed, power, technique, groove, flexibility, adaptability, infinite creativity. 150 libre, semi blind, and diabetic. He is inhuman, and not paragonable with human.
You know what gets me every single time and gives me goosebumps (in a good way) about Gene... it's this video of Scott Ian ruclips.net/video/n_00KmkaJ9g/видео.html
Never really looks like he’s trying and yet he’s crushing it. Also the frame rate on this camera combined with the frequency of the left crash looks cool.
Jacob William Gene hadn’t played with them until he rejoined in 2012. They’ve had around 7 or 8 drummers since 97 and Gene was only around for that album and half the tour for it, he jumped ship and joined Strapping Young Lad on that tour because he liked what they were doing more.
it is the golden snare...though sadly he doesn't use it that much anymore...he has been seen using some Pearl new wood snares lately...guess Ol' Bessy Lou the golden Girl is retired or maybe just for studio work now...
It's not for nothing that Gene is called "the Atomic Clock" or Gene "the Machine". U just have to look in which Bands he played and U can only say WOW.
You guys should listen to his drumming with his original group Dark Angel from South Gate, CA. I used to hang around withthis guys and go to their rehearls once or twice a week in the City of Vernon, this was in late 80's. A good guy and friendly person too.
Yes..his drumming in dark angel is ridiculously good..some of his best work i think besides Death. I watched Gene play a Rush song in 1986 right in front of me at the dark angel practice spot. He was a genius from a very young age . I kinda miss his crazier, proggier drumming style. Testament is fairly straightforward..but seeing this drum cam is revealing...more than meets the eye!
His hihat is so low!!!!!! Gene is an absolute legend, his drum videos are amazing. The 10 top metal drum tips free on Drumeo channel on you is definitely worth watching. Gene is a very nice guy
I love how the blast beat has made it into thrash metal music, it's great to hear blasting in testament, and slayer, not sure of the song name, but I'm pretty sure it's the Christ illusion album that it's on .
Not to sound like I'm knocking Testament's back catalog, cuz there's some absolutely fantastic stuff on it, but pretty much everything they've put out the last decade with Gene on drums has been killer. Saw them 2x on the Slayer final tour, and again in between those dates where Testament and Anthrax did a co-headliner show playing much longer sets, and they still bring it so hard live.
Felipe fernandez. Zain Terrell is exactly right. I have that ride. Seriously the best crown sound you can get in a ride. IMO. Great cymbal and affordable too!
@@derekkeith108 he is indeed left handed but he has his kit set up symmetrical except for toms so he can always play open hand regardless of which one he leads with

True, it is free floating. Looks a maple one though. He used to play a brass 8 inch depp

And Fear Factory
@@tibetcaglar4872 Yeah WTF?
Gene Hoglan: bringing the funk to extreme metal drumming.
These live drumcams show the true essence of drumming in a way that super well-produced studio playthroughs with 1000 angles never will.
Never really looks like he’s trying and yet he’s crushing it. Also the frame rate on this camera combined with the frequency of the left crash looks cool.
Love how he dropped his stick around 1:00 and fixed it instantly!
I could watch Gene Hoglan drumcams all fucking day.
Sometimes I do.
The best metal drummer IMHO! Testament really needs to hang on to this guy!!!
Well, he's been with 'em (on and off, mostly on) since '97. Yea he's the f'n man.
Paul Bostaph? Man he really can't stay on time lol

In my opinion Gene Hoglan and Dave Lombardo are two of the greatest metal drummers
His talents are wasted in Testament.
Testament was pretty much a " Death " lineup, Steve Di Gorio, Gene, James Murphy ... amazing ;)
But the original linup kicks his ass
Death
that's his iconic snare drum used basically everything he has recorded...all the classic Death albums.....tasty snare
tweevers2 he only did two out of the 7 albums from death but yes awesome snare
yup, I know.. he only did Individual and symbolic...just saying he used them for both/ (all) of them :)
tweevers2 fair enough :p
it is the golden snare...though sadly he doesn't use it that much anymore...he has been seen using some Pearl new wood snares lately...guess Ol' Bessy Lou the golden Girl is retired or maybe just for studio work now...
Yup! Pearl Free Floating Brass snare 14x8
Kinda rare to find a snare like that anymore. It's beautiful sounding
That's the most laidback drumstick recovery I've ever seen.
It's funny when he fumbles the stick at like 1:00. Shows that everyone is human. Even the Machine!
He had an atomic clock disruption
The fact he kept the beat going is a testament to his professionalism!.
@@spudmagnum7394I see what you did there
how he drops the stick and doesnt even miss a beat....
Kyle Edissi right? fucking classic lol
Awesome
Flawless.

Well, Texas Cowboys
What a great sounding kit.

Beast. Gene Hoglan, Vinnie Paul and Pete Sandoval are my favourite metal drummers.
Such a killer ride sound
Damn, great arrangement.
Gene is a beast!
playing 3/4 of this song in 8th notes with his hi hat and ride cymbal is fucking remarquable
unbelievably clean with those blasts
When he lets go of the stick, it literally plays itself on the toms while he picks it up. Astonishing
I love watching Sean Reinhart and Brann Dailor but damn Gene is on his game...
JOEYS COLOSTOMY BAG Dark Angel, Death and Devin Townsend
Cynic
Mastodon
That's where the best extreme/groovier/technical drummers are
This guy is solid! Wow amazing chops!
I love how the blast beat has made it into thrash metal music, it's great to hear blasting in testament, and slayer, not sure of the song name, but I'm pretty sure it's the Christ illusion album that it's on .
Only drummers will understand the rider patter accent. Brutal drummer. Very creative.
THE ATOMIC CLOCK!!!
The best allways proudly , is far ahead testament
Gene is a monster on the drums.
Insane Gene...Again! And again...
I love Gene sooooooo fucking much
How many songs are in his head favorite drummer !!!
omg 1:00 he's actually human
Surprise! :D Good to see it!
Then proceeds to catch the stick in a second without missing a beat like out of this world ~~
BOSS!!!! Mad respect for this man!!!
Hardest working drummer in metal. Nicest guy ever and the most solid tight and heaviest...the atomic clock Gene Hoglan.
Este hombre es impresionante. Toca como un zurdo pero puede tocar como diestro. De los mejores sin duda. Enorme.

Omg BEAST MODE!
One of the hardest working (China) cymbal stands in the business for sure 🥁🍻
Not even joking... How many drummers swap hands to play thrash metal?? Hands down, the best of the best...
Well, Tom Hunting is left handed
John Longstreth
its solid drummer really waw what song its this?
Um baterista de peso! kkk! Fenomenal! Na mesma linha de Dave Lombardo! Grande músico!
That is absolutely arguable... I could name a few....
What is that snare sounds awesome🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻👏👏👏😎😎😎
Remy Garon Pearl 14x8 brass free floater
Gene has always been over the top
Badass!!!!
I LOVE that ride cymbal sound! Anyone know what ride that is?
Felipe fernandez. Zain Terrell is exactly right. I have that ride. Seriously the best crown sound you can get in a ride. IMO. Great cymbal and affordable too!
+Trevor Quinton i know the next cymbal ill be getting!
I have one too and it's awesome!
dude's a beast!
Respect
grande hoglan..
Una bestia
Woo!!
Gene fumbling his stick made me feel so much better about myself
The metal master...killer badass on the skins...
For me is Gene the best Drummer
Never heard Gene play ahead of the beat before, he's usually a tiny bit behind.
If I was a fourth as good as Gene I'd be happy
To be a good drummer, you need to be gifted since born.
Fuck Yes \m/
Gene is a monster!!!
Does anyone knows what brand of china this master play?
All Sabians. He endorses Pearl drums evens heads Sabina cymbals and sometimes uses Tama iron cobra to suit with it for heaviness
Sabain 19 inch aa holy china
a step ahead
the atomic clock
Prze… UJ ♥️🙏💪♥️🙏
yeah men
Gene true metal head
Take heed, mr. Motormouth.
Gene hoglan
Atomic clock
I feel bad for the Testament drummer that has to replace Gene Hogan like "holy fuck now I need to play shit"
Anyone know the song?
True American Hate ;)
Testament - True American Hate
Is he left handed??
Bruno Lopez He's ambidextrous. I believe he is right handed but he plays open like that.
@@derekkeith108 he is indeed left handed but he has his kit set up symmetrical except for toms so he can always play open hand regardless of which one he leads with
If you want to hear his best drumming of his career check out Old Man's Child - Ill-Natured Spiritual Invasion.
His best drumming is on every album he created.
Fear of The dark?
Doesn't even break a sweat
not the greatest, but a very good one
You have not seen his drumming in Death and Dark Angel otherwise you would said that he is the best
He totally overuses the china.
there's always one.
