I actually discovered this decades ago when trying to deconstruct Becoming by Pantera. it was too awkward to play the pattern with alternating hits, and that's when I tried the double slap. worked like a charm.
Gene is great to learn from. He isn't pretentious about his playing. He makes it easy. A lot of drummers want to make things more difficult than they actually are by pretending like what they do is impossible. Drumming is confidence. The more you believe you can do the easier it all becomes.
Him and Joey Jordison are my top 2 favorite drummers of all time. Gene really seems like an amazing down to earth person. I bet he's easy to talk to and hangout with. I would love to have a jam session and just learn and take in any wisdom, knowledge and advice he would be willing to teach me. Just kick back and have a fun time drumming for an afternoon. When I discovered dethklok they instantly became my favorite metal band and his drumming with them blew my mind. Best ive ever heard. Gene is a legend
I remember reading an article in Modern Drummer when I was a kid. It was about how Gene played on an album with pretty much a broken back and still killed it.
He is such a Gentleman. I met him in Hollywood at a Death show, that was years before Chuck passed, even then Gene was so nice he will sit there and talk to you. Very genuine Dude.
Several people here are commenting that "Drummer N.N from band xxxyyyzzz did this on year yyyy already". Does that matter? Gene never claimed that he'd come up with that pattern or technique himself. He doesn't even claim that he'd invented Hoglan blast! Stop comparing and appreciate a good lesson.
Amazing.Gene is a legend. From listening to dark angel's-we have arrived on cassette back in the day to seeing him here. It's great to see him still progressing. He's done SO much great drumming for many artists.
Buck Futtler Nobody said he was the greatest drummer of all time, but he has his own unique style and he’s very skilled. What are you trying to prove here?
Those kind of patterns are so cool, hertas, triplets, and 4-stroke gallops sound so sweet. So do the double triplet patterns, where it’s 6 strokes but it’s played RLR-RLR
@@Eccentricjuices we all know Reinert played it on the record, but Gene still had to learn the Reinert songs for live playing so its natural he played it
Im glad he threw in that little piece of advice at the end cause he is an left handed drummer on a right hand set up,so for me it wouldve been a little confusing if he hadnt mentioned that....Thanks Gene, your an amazing player!!
As a "left foot lead" player what helped me was keeping solid time and focusing my weight and balance on my left foot (8th notes).... paying attention to keeping it hard and solid. If you focus on this, your right leg will naturally lighten and balance your body to counteract you playing solid with your left. It's maybe not ideal, but you will be less likely to throw your time out and a "lighter floating right foot " will make those doubles a lot easier, as always start at 100bpm, look up! and relax. Hope this help someone......
He's the kind of Metal-drummer, who just have the right sound on both bass/snaredrums. The double bass is always clear, without having too much click-sound, they're still deep & heavy.. His signature is his tightness + fill-inn's w. splash, chrash, cymbals, etc.. He's just relaxed, NO show off, His chilly attitude, just shows this is his right element.. Funny though, that he is a left handed drummer, but have his kit setup, as a right handed… By far one of the best drummers in the "Tech. Death Metal"-genre.. Horns from Danmark
Gene is looking awesome. His weight cut is making him look loads healthier. Keep up the hard work Gene. We need your drumming skills for a long time to come.
Thomas Haake plays Bleed a little more precisely with 32nd note bursts as opposed to the Vinnie Paul style Gene is performing here. Bleed by Meshuggah is true polyrythmic pattern that only lands back on the 4/4 IF performed exact, otherwise the pattern would get jumbled and not be in sync with the guitar/bass patterns, where as this has less precise small bursts of 16th triplets or 32nd notes but still as heavy and effective in Becoming by Vinnie P./Pantera. RIP. BTW Iv'e never had an emotional reaction to a celebrity before Dimebag Darrel's murder and now Vinnie Paul's death actually still make me fucking cry when I think about it. Pantera was everything when I was in school in the late 90's and their music actually helped me with confidence problems that I had. PAN-FUCKING-TERA!!!
I learned how to do this when I was learning the transition from the first chorus to the second verse in "Afterlife" by Avenged Sevenfold and the intro for "The Stage" by Avenged Sevenfold.
He seems like such a nice dude, also basically taught me how to get the bass drum pattern for Meshuggah Bleed right here. Ive been struggling with that for too long
Musa Tariq Actually most of the song is leading with the right foot (or left, if you are a leftie) and even tho you need a lot of stamina, the leading foot does not change, and that helps a lot. If you want a really fucked up example, check Pantera's song Becoming and pay attention to the double bass pattern Vinnie Paul did. Cheers
Actually it is not. Haake does not use the double slap, only alternates, causing his leading foot to change from right to left and back constantly. Makes it even more impressive though.
Saker Falcon IOS I don’t know if ‘easier’ is the right word since they require different traits of playing. Bleed requires speed and super high endurance while Ectogenesis or The Woven Web (basically anything from Animals as Leaders) is more about complexity and structure
Yeah my bad; woven web and ectogenesis are fine examples of Garstka’s exemplary skill and mastery. Bleed is harder in terms of stamina, but the AAL patterns are more complex in composition, obviously.
Basically a right-foot drag. Vinnie Paul, Scott Travis from Judas Priest and Raymond Herrera from Fear Factory pioneered this kind of double bass playing in the early 90's.
Mad Martigan gene also recorded Mechanize and The Industrialist with fear factory. Only to be pushed out of the band when Burton and Dino decided to use a Drum Machine for Genexus over a pay dispute between Gene and Burton/Dino.
Yeah but the Hot for Teacher the drummer he used Simmons sdsv electronic drums for the record in there and he used his hands and contacted look a little pressed roll
For those who want to practice this. Consider the "spaz" a double stroke on the foot you choose. essentially practice double strokes with your feet to do cool stuff.
Its fun... you learn to lead left from doing double bass over time. ( being a right handed drummer) i can relate. Then start slapping stuff around a little bit
It's the same concept of hand rudiments where you would take for example, a standard singe stroke roll, and add extra 16th notes after the 1st beat. Just applied to kick drums.
Wow I never imagined this guy to be as humble as this. Funny how people judge and stigmatise the metal genre, yet they're made of the most down-to-earth and respectable individuals, while that normalized pop-rap-trap-electro music is all about ego and shit.
Damnit Gene I've been focusing on this kind of thing lately and now you're giving away a secret of mine! Lol, but really it's just kinda adding triplets before or after the main beat to try and swing it a bit. (Or you can try to play more quantized if you want) If you guys are having trouble with it, try playing a slower shuffle with your foot but keep whatever hand that's keeping time on the hats or ride doing eighth notes and that'll help you get it down for sure.
My buddy used to stop playing and say your adding another note in there and i would have to concentrate on playing the same left and right this was my first double bass kit in like 87 or 1988 but once i started going hard my foot would add that slap in there he would get pist and quit. But needless to say now its a good thing lol.
Yeah Gene! Most respect to you as a drummer! Always loved Human by Death and also a big Strapping young lad. Gene Was a big influence on me as a drummer and also Mike Portnoy. Keep rocking 🤩
...as if being a killer drummer with a badass resumé wasn't enough, dude's gotta have the sickest pair of purple argyle socks, too.
The most metal part of this video!!
And some And1 shoes😂
🤣🤣🤣new standard of COOL! 😎🤘🤘socks are the unsung heroes of wardrobe!😎😎
You know whats even more metal? Happy socks!🤘
Yeah, can't wear all black all the time...geez...cool socks... definitely
God he's such a great drummer! He's really good at playing, and he's good at teaching, and he's a fun person...he's just one of the greats!

Everytime I see Gene, he's looking better and healthier lml
Jorge Cornejo first thing I thought when the video started.
Same
So basically.....he has immortalized himself by getting younger and younger while everyone around him gets older...?
Gene Hoglan, Andreas Kisser and Bruce Dickinson = almost an entire band that stop aging. We just need a bassist.
I have long hair too, but it's starting to thin. I'm envious
Thankyou Gene, for collaborating with Devin Townsend - some of the best music ever created!
2:16 is the best moment of the lesson, great drumming.
He was "air D-J'ing"
@Richard James beatboxing?
2 stroke dirt bike.
Gene is pure quality playing the drums and his criteria is almost unique

Great video. Gene is a metal God. Dark Angel's Darkness Descends has been one of my favorite albums for just about 30 years now. Rock on!

A very generous man. He has even filled in for Behemoth.
Would love to see Mario Duplantier from Gojira on here.
there are literally dozens and dozens of better drummers than Mario....who is amazing dont get me wrong...
Buck Futtler Nobody said he was the greatest drummer of all time, but he has his own unique style and he’s very skilled. What are you trying to prove here?
first comment,,, "....is the REAL drum god of our time"...and i simply said, mario is amazing, bur there are better...
Mario is on a different spiritual plane than the rest of us
Lewis Griffiths YESS DUDE
He is Drum God... with purple socks😂
His boots were stolen on tour !! :s
Purple socks paired with And1 basketball shoes. 🤣
I'm off to buy some purple socks
Tyler Chaffee secret of superior technique! Gotta have more purple plaid socks!
Saw this on the feed. I was like Gene Hoglan in Drumeo!?? C-liiiii-iickkkk!!! Gene is the man RIP Chuck
Gene has always rocked 🤘.. Sick footwork.. when he starts with the hands it kinda is a Vinnie Paul meets Bernard Purdie combo.. really cool sounding
Gene Hoglan basically took Vinnie Paul’s sound to an entirely new level. Gene just makes you want to get a mega bell ride and play groove metal.
A New Level… of confidence… and power ;)
No way. Gene was a drum legend before anyone even knew who Vinnie Paul was. He'd drum circles around Vin if he was still alive.
It's so nice to see an old school drummer picking up new techniques.
Those kind of patterns are so cool, hertas, triplets, and 4-stroke gallops sound so sweet. So do the double triplet patterns, where it’s 6 strokes but it’s played RLR-RLR

He’s playing the beginning of Flattening of Emotions by Death!
Awesome stuff
That was Sean Reinart not Gene; why does this comment have so many likes.

Get Tomas Haake
1:38 Very Bleed style poly rhythm.
sounds like Bleed damn!!
Becoming

Thank you for the tips, good to learn other methods, thank you Drumeo and Mr. Hoglan
Definately going to try this..sounds cool. not sure if i can pull it off though..
this technique is not difficult once is explained with that clarity, nice work!
Tomas Haakes on “Bleed” is probably the most difficult example of this

Purple socks, Formulas Fatal to the Flesh shirt, Double bass drums and of course Mighty Gene. Perfect.
The original grand master of extreme metal drumming 🥁
There's a post towards the end that reminds me of Death "Flattening of Emotions" (RIP Sean Reinhardt).
The one and only Gene Hoglan!
Gene is da man! Nicely explained too.
Permutations. Gene is so great.
Sounds good. Something to aspire to. Thanks
the man,the legend underrated drummer.mean gene hoglan.
So much fun once you get it down and start playing around with it
Vinnie Paul used this technique too, mainly on the end of Slaughtered and the verse of Becoming. I called it “bass cadences”
Gene Hoglan is such an amazingly cool person.
Gene is one of my faves
First heard Paul Bostaph use this method during the verses on Slayer's 'Killing Fields'.

The man mountain finally left his brown leather boots !! Congrats on the new shoes Gene
i think they got stolen back then, he didnt want to leave them
What a great technique! And a cool dude and killer drummer! 👍
super nice guy and master of his instrument.
ty for uploading this video. Now I got an idea.
Dan carle does this a lot. It's mesmerizing to watch his foot work
Awesome lesson guys'll thanks
The metronome is looking healthy af, good work Gene!
woah them socks
very gay
No
Had to scroll ages until I found someone who'd mentioned it 😁 not what you'd think he'd wear 😂
Joe JG Maybe look at your sexual preference if you think this look gay. Come out the closet man, no need to stay inside anymore it's 2018..
selvmortsydd ..LOL!!😂😂😈
.No shit!..
One of the best metal drummers in the world, and he’s doing it in argyle socks.
Take notes kids. Take notes.
He’s playing the Steve gadd , toe/heel on his right to give the double slap that’s the technique I use it’s great for samba

He leads with his left foot like vinnie paul no wonder they have been throwing me off for years. 🤘
Greatest drummer nobody knows
I LOVE his purple argyle socks!! That means...HE’S FUN!!!!
Hoglan isn't the most technical but he's got that groove and intuition that makes him a cut above most metal drummers, nothing but respect.
TheAlienDog actually gene is considered a technical drummer alongside with tomas haake, that's why he was called "The Atomic Clock"
Woaw ! Did not know he lost so much weight ! That's nice to see ! Drumming expert and very cool guy for sure !
3:42 i hear that legendary hot for teacher beat. Love it!
este tipo me encanta, su sonido es muy poderoso
Practices with weighted ankle straps too. Probably helps when it comes time to perform.

Great drummer and human being
Gene is the Machine!
Yeah Gene! Most respect to you as a drummer! Always loved Human by Death and also a big Strapping young lad. Gene Was a big influence on me as a drummer and also Mike Portnoy. Keep rocking 🤩
Human is a classic, but Sean Reinhert was the drummer for that record. Gene was on the next 2 records for Death.
What Gene is describing here is slide technique, a way of doing quick doubles with one foot (heel-toe is another you've probably heard of).
Beams of fire sweap through my head!
Nope. Not a Herta. Not Bleed.
Gene you’re a legend
1 of my favorite drummers
