SHOOTING BIG PIGS 308win

  • Shot some big pigs this trip with the 308, running both subsonic and supersonics. Spent night 1 over a sheep feeder full of wheat, the pigs had been regularly coming in and pushing the sheep away. Made for a great night with 20 pigs shot. Mainly used subsonic around the feeder to keep the noise to a minimum and not scare away other pigs in the area. Unfortunately the wind came up on night 2, with gusts over 60kph, difficult to shoot in but made it easy to sneak in on the mobs out in the stubble paddocks. Best pig weighed in at 105kg with several others around 80kg. Other than scoping myself and giving the boys a good laugh it was a fantastic couple of nights with plenty of pigs down, lot's of fun and some good shooting too. Even got to play with some Gen 2, white phosphorus helmet mounted night vision, very cool gear....

      @@RJMHuntingAustralia Bet those thermal scopes cost a pretty penny.Doing your own reloads im assuming ammo prices in this day and age is hard hit to the wallet..Had an old .308 back 20 years ago and those were the glory days factory ammo under $20 a box of 20 and military surplus ammo everywhere and tons of it $6 a box of 20 but thats all dried up long gone then did my own reloads ar2206 powder with 150 grain hollow points and ballistic tips..Ammo prices nowdays are a joke costs a fortune to pull the trigger all night

      You've hit the nail on the head mate. Best part of $2 per round these days, a little cheaper if you reload. Thermal is worth every cent but makes for a unhealthy bank balance and requires a very forgiving wife. 😉

      @@RJMHuntingAustralia Ive seen some of the prices for thermals and that will give most people nightmares but they are great gear.If you are doing reloads i reccommend those 150 grain ballistic tips..Whew they stop them cold in there tracks they will not let you down as i no experience with the same round they are a bit pricey but anything to do with firearms nowdays usually are no surprise there.The only problems with reloads is if your time poor that will be a bugger it takes time reload about 50 rounds at a time as ive done.Ive dropped piggies around the 150kg mark and never had to shoot twice with those ballistic tips they are just the bees knees of projectiles grab yourself a box and they will drop the biggest piggies they will go down like a beer at octoberfest..Look forward to the next video

    I’m now a retired pro shooter in Nz mainly for red deer
    I did load some subsonic loads for my old Bruno 308 601
    For memory it was trailboss power can’t remember off the top of my head the load with 180 gr hornady round nose I think they were doing 1050 fps still had a bit of a crack through a suppressor and shot a real arc good for 50 to 80 yards I was never that confident with them so I never stuck with it I’ve still got a few loads just sitting there but I was broken into a couple years ago and most of my rifles were stolen apart from my favourite 22-250

    Just curious, the subsonic 308 seem pretty effective, is there a reason you don't run them the whole time? Availability of ammunition?

    • @RJMHuntingAustralia
      @RJMHuntingAustralia  Год назад +1

      Mainly due to bullet drop.
      Out to say 70m you can pretty much aim and shoot. Past that the heavy projectile drops dramatically thus making it more difficult to hit the target without making the necessary calculations.
      Lighter bullets and faster loads require minimal adjustment (hold over) out at much further distances.

    im someone that never hunted before and as a german, my gun knowledge is pretty limited. so i just want to ask, since sub sonic rounds are quiter, why do you not just shoot only those? are they less lethal or is there just something with the round that makes super sonic ones more trustworthy?

    • @RJMHuntingAustralia
      @RJMHuntingAustralia  Год назад

      Because they are usually a heavier bullet travelling much slower, their flight trajectory is very curved. This makes it more difficult to shoot at longer distances as you need to factor in how much the bullet will drop compared to where you are aiming.
      Supersonic are louder but travel much faster, have a flatter trajectory and are more explosive on impact. Hope this makes sense mate. 👍

    Are semi-auto rifles illegal where youre at? I stopped using my Savage .270 Winchester bolt-action rifle after I was tired of having to rechamber with each shot and making me lose quite a few coyotes. I know a bolt actions is said to be more accurate but I have a Colt AR-15 that is repetitively accurate at 300 yards.

    • @RJMHuntingAustralia
      @RJMHuntingAustralia  Год назад

      Not illegal, just a very complex process of getting approval for one. Then there is the added expense of the purchase. A decent semi auto in Australia cost approximately $6000 and we are very limited with choice. As much as I would love one, I just don't know if it's worth the hassle. 😪

      WoW I would have never guessed they cost that much! Just 2 years ago I paid $1200 for mine brand new off of the shelf. Sounds like your country's government is making it so the price is so spiked up in order to reduce the numbers of people who buy the semi-auto rifles
