  • FIFA: Road to World Cup 98 (commonly abbreviated to FIFA 98) is an association football video game developed by EA Canada and published by Electronic Arts. It was the fifth game in the FIFA series and the second to be in 3D on the 32-bit machines. A number of different players were featured on the cover, including David Beckham in the UK, Roy Lassiter in the United States, Mexico, and Brazil, David Ginola on the French cover, Raúl on the Spanish cover, Paolo Maldini on the Italian and Andreas Möller on the German cover. FIFA 98 was the last FIFA game released for the Mega Drive and ported from it to the SNES in Europe.

I loved the Dutch team of '98 and I think they never had a squad quite as good afterwards (although they did get better results with other teams) : Edwin van der Sar, Danny Blind, Jaap Stam, Michael Reiziger, Frank de Boer, Clearance Seedorf, Edgar Davids, Aaron Winter, Patrick Kluivert, Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Pierre van Hooijdonk, Marc Overmars and Dennis Bergkamp - all were supreme players.

@@mgoogyi Indeed the team of france 98 was in my opinion the best ever however the squad of 2000 was nearly the same. Kluivert and Bergkamp couple was made in heaven. They could have won both tournaments with more luck on their sides.

If I remember correctly, you can tap the c-buttons after scoring a goal to let the crowd play drums, tut horns and chant - the typical fan reactions. It's deinitely in FIFA 99 but I think it worked in 98 as well.

I think this is one of the best sports games for the Nintendo 64,I love the control that you have over all the players. You can move them with ease and it adds a lot of skill ,The audio in FIFA really is a high point of the game. This time, the game has been provided with a surround-sound option, and it really shows - especially during the matches.

I loved this game, this might be my favorite football game of all time, even thought I enjoyed ISS 64 a lot. All the Fifa nations were available, and a lot of national leagues too. And I guess for the first time we could play national leagues, european champions league, world cup qualification and world cup itself in the same game ! Not even sure all these possibilities happened again, maybe on fifa 2002?
Honestly, this game was far better than fifa 64, and was a real challenger for iss 64, it just depended about if you prefered arcade of simulation. I was on simulation.
And Fifa '98 is the best because it reminds me such of nice memories related with this world cup that France won :)

I'm from Germany. I was also born in the early 80s. My WWF time was between summer 1992 and early 1994, then I quickly lost interest, because I was more focused on football and Formula 1. The quality of the german team at the World Cup 1998 was horrible. Many old players in the squad like Matthäus, Köpke, Kohler, Reuter, Hässler, Klinsmann and so on. Even the english team had much more quality and until this day I don't get it why England lost against Argentina.

What I didn't like about FIFA 98 was EA took out the indoor arenas of FIFA 97, Those were super fast games and had no throw ins/corners (the ball would just bounce off the wall) making for some action packed games.
I was also pissed when EA removed the gamebreaker powers from Tiger Woods. made the game boring as fuck.

Speaking on the subject of resolution, I think it's sad the legacy of the Expansion Pak, which hoped to boost RAM limitations and graphical prowess worked at the cost of poorer framerates never functionally succeeded at doing the opposite, which hurt many N64 games it sought to help. Its legacy would be the vital thing that made DK64, PD and Majora's Mask playable instead of making those needed, chuggier games more palatable.

What a great World Cup it was. So many greats - Ronaldo, Zidane, Suker, Salas & Zamarano, Bergkamp, Batistuta, Rivaldo, David Batty.
The greatest ever World Cup player for me personally (as somebody who was born in 84) would have to be Ronaldo. As much I'd like to give it to a defender or midfielder, he was just awesome to watch in 98 and 02.
My greatest football game would have to be a tie between ISS 64 (for the nostalgia factor and because it was a revolutionary title), and Pro Evolution Soccer 3 on the PS2 (This was when the series hit its gameplay peak IMO).

Mixed feelings with this game, as it is better than the previous iteration of Fifa, and the deep of customization and the great amount of options and teams and so is fantastic. But the gameplay is not near as fun and challenging as the Konami game. It was good to spent long hours in the night alone, but not so fun to play with your friends.

By then, we already had Konami's efforts which although far from perfect, (or even fun to play) they were at least more realistic than this! The one thing about this which I thought was amazing at this time was the fact that there were SO many international teams and you could select which squad you wanted from a load of reserves, a good feature for it's time. This disappeared for FIFA 99!
The gameplay however was frickin awful Dodgy AI? That's the understatement of the century! I remember on world class difficulty the computer kicking off and just passing it straight to my Goal Keeper. The game was WAAAY too easy. Furthermore the way they ran was just crap! This was a real turd of a game on all levels from playability to graphics. I feel like an idiot for ever enjoying this!

Massively superior to the PS1 version which is a pixelated mess with awful tracking.
