    I want to thank you for your compliments on the music in this game. I enjoyed composing every moment of it, and I’m thrilled there are people who recognize that effort. It was an overwhelming challenge given the limitations of that platform.

      Yes I remember reading about what you did in the Nintendo power magazine. You recorded it with the best quality you could add and compressed it. When I first read about it and then played the game, I automatically thought of Factor 5 compression technology. I have always wondered how you did that. How you compressing it into a 96 Mb cart still blows my mind to this day.
      In fact, Reading about how strongly you felt about the music got me excited for the game.

  • @Larry

    Man, I remember the Official Nintendo Magazine promoting the absolute hell out of this game, proclaiming it as "the next Goldeneye". What went wrong?
    I also believe this was Ocean Software's final ever game before being swallowed up by Infogrammes.

    • @n64glennplant
      @n64glennplant  10 лет назад +2

      yeah NOM/ONM were all over this lapping it up until the release then they ate humble pie and looked like muppets. To be fair though every mag at the time was expecting great things from this. And yes thats right about inrogrammes - i mentioned it a few minutes in :)

    • @ChloeClements34
      @ChloeClements34 10 лет назад +2

      I fell into that trap too. It looked good and the film was ok so yeah I got it, hated it but by the end thought it was ok and in couple of parts really good. I always thought Ocean had been acquired well before this release but used the Ocean name due its popularity/history. Still was that perhaps the spin just so Infogrames would not have its name tied to the game if it bombed.

    • @Larry
      @Larry 10 лет назад +2

      I think Infogrammes used Ocean's name for a few games, couple of Japanese imports on the PS1 (which is ironic as that's the exact same thing Ocean did when they bought Imagine :D)

Games in the past didn't hold your hand in-game, no arrows pointing where to go and such and this is imo a big plus. It's a much greater feel of achievement when you solve the different tasks throughout the game. I'll have to get this into my collection again.

    When I was 13, while visiting my dad during the summer, they had a party. This 40-something year old dude I'd never met brought a Playstation and MGS and played it on the living room tv. I was pretty blown away by it. I really wanted it, but didn't have a Playstation. That weekend, I'd convinced my mother to stop in at our local (unfortunately long-since closed) video game store so I could look around. On one of the little tvs they had setup for people to test games before buying, Mission Impossible was running. I started it up and the first level immediately reminded me of MGS. I was sold. The game was pretty cheap at that point, and I was able to convince my mother to buy it. Unfortunately, it was no MGS, but I did play it a lot. It was the first game I'd played with a disguise mechanic, and that alone made it pretty cool. But yeah, super clunky controls.

  • @onewithsource9742
    @onewithsource9742 4 года назад +1

    Yeah the controls were a little clunky and the ai was quite weak. But I enjoyed the variety of levels and styles of play, the music, the story, the audio and video intros and cut scenes. And the richness in background detail on many levels and depth of ambition and of course a great range of gadgets. This games got a lot going for it. I waited ages for this got it on release day and thoroughly enjoyed it. So much variety of level types. Great effort.

    I wish they had done a mission: Impossible 2 game that was inspired by the movie M:I-2. Could you imagine the gameplay, open game with Rock climbing sequence only to get to top and have a helicopter shoot a fake rocket message down at your feet with sunglasses hidden inside telling you your mission before the sunglasses explode. Then you got some mask wearing Intel gathering, shootouts, motorcycle car chases and fist fights. The movie plot itself and the way its directed comes off like a good videogame.

I bought this when it was first released in America and looked forward to it for a very long time given it was announced prior to the launch of the N64. I remember enjoying this game more than I should have as a kid. The controls were screwy, hit detection and targeting system were horribly flawed, and the objectives were vague and obscured. The game was nowhere near the same level as Goldeneye. I didn't like that it was in third person viewpoint either. What I did like most was the embassy mission where it felt like you were at a party while in disguise.
    It was the puzzle aspect of the game that I felt was the best part.

    I remember renting this way back in the day, but unfortunately, I had already played GoldenEye, and the lack of action plus the poor controls disappointed my young mind. That was back in '98, though, so I think a re-play might be in order, as my young self couldn't grasp the finer strategies within. Great video!

    I remember this game being hyped a lot in magazines. When the game finally came out I rented it from Blockbuster and was really disappointed. It was a solid 6/10 for me at the time. No where near what the hype built up. Looking back, it was definitely better than I felt at the time but I was so let down when I finally played the game after all the hype that had been created from it, I never bothered to actually buy the game.

    Ah, my first video game ever... After playing it as an adult, I see its flaws more apparently than I did as a kid, but it still holds a special place in my tiny black heart. It just has an atmosphere that, even still, I can't find quite like it anywhere else. Not to mention the music, and variety in the mission structure.
    It's a shame it's not downloadable on the Wii. :(

    This was game was such a mixed bag but I couldn't help but love it despite its flaws, for being so unlike anything else on the system. Picked it up on ebay a few years ago for nostalgia and yea..it hasn't exactly aged well but I still had a weirdly fun time playing through it again. Definitely hit some major frustrations along the way though due to the controls and inconsistencies in design. I think this review is pretty spot-on.

    I actually remember when I got this game.
    I bought it right after summer vacation right after school, hoping it would be like Goldeneye.
    So unfortunately I always get the bad taste of school start when I think about this game.
    Another problem compared to Goldeneye was that the missions was a lot more complex compared to Goldeneye, and since I barely understood a word of English back then, I had to constantly call the Nintendo hotline to get help, and even then, I believe I actually used an Action Replay back then to get through the game.

      Here in Denmark?.. Meh. I once visited them actually. Most of them didn't really seem to know much themself. They just looked up everything on their computers.
      The worst thing was the waiting. There would usually be a line of 5 people in front of you and I'm not kidding when I say it could take more than an hour to get through.
      Well.. At least it was free to call them.

    Like Tom Cruise, Matt Damon opted out of the Bourne Identity PS3 game for similar reasons. Stating that he decided he didn't want to do a violent game that kids would play (paraphrasing) .. but regarding both actors, I don't buy their reasoning behind it. I think in both situations it was most likely down to money and how much they wanted to be compensated to take part in reprising the role in these games, especially for Damon if there was motion capture work involved.
