    The night my Dad passed away I went home and played this game for hours. I don't remember much from that night, but I know I got lost in the game for hours. It helped the grieving process. Watched Star Wars movies with my Dad all the time so playing this game was cool.

      I first played this game a day or 2 after my grandmother passed away. She was like my mother and it was really hard. I remember playing this game in my room while the funeral stuff was going on and my uncle came and berated me for playing a game during all the shit going on. My dad almost broke his nose for bugging us kids while we tried to find a moment of peace during that time. Will always be one of my favorite games.

I remeber people talking about how it looked even better then the movies!..... if i were a young gamer right now and i saw someone playing the gamecube version but they lie to me by saying it was an xboxone/ps4 game, i would definitely believe it!....... But what makes the n64 version a bit more special is how good it still holds up today some 20 years later especially when you remember that its running on 64 bit hardware that was developed in the early 90s!

    The trench run gold was something my father and I used to race to. Neither one of us were ever able to come in under that 2:42 mark needed for gold, until one summer, dad was in the yard, I was playing and basically speed running through the trench run (all this was about 5-6 months of work for us to 100% gold the game) and the next thing I know, I run a 2:33. My father was never able to get 100% gold because he couldn't beat that run. It was and still is, one of my top 3 favorite games of all time.

      In some cases it is intentional. Whether it fits the atmosphere, or whether they don't want to embrace pop-up as unabashedly as Sony did. I don't think Sony was capable of the fog effect, so they had to settle for pop-up.

    • @Jack_80
      @Jack_80 4 года назад +3

      fog is one of those kill 2 birds with one stine things when done properly. helps the game run better and adds to the atmosphere. in some remakes of games i've seen many fans upset by the removal of fog, claiming it lost the atmospheric feeling of the original.

    Coming off of Star Fox 64, Star Wars Rogue Squadron was actually my first real foray into the Star Wars universe. So as you can guess, my favorite parts of the Star Wars movies are the parts where there is a dogfight of some sort going on. Fun fact: When I was a little kid, my mom and I used to joke that the picture used for Wedge Antillies in the movie looked like my grandfather. This joke was the earliest inspiration for a novel I am currently working on.

She filmed all the scenes etc and then George Lucas decided he didn't want Solo to have a girlfriend as it would soften his character too much so they cut all scenes with her in it. She still attends conventions today as big fans will know who she is but she missed out on the big payoff that the franchise went on to create

    This game was the number one reason my brothers and I wanted a Nintendo 64. We never saw or knew of anything like it before since we were very young and had limited awareness of the gaming landscape. Heck, I don't think I knew about Zelda or Mario until after we got the N64; but, when we finally bought ourselves one, Rogue Squadron was one of the first few titles we got for the system.
    The thing I most remember about the game was the fact that none of us could get a gold medal for the Mission on Fest where you had to protect Rebel AT-PTs. My brothers and I were able to get gold medals on all the other missions but this one was seeming impossible as one AT-PT would always fall before we could bring down the first AT-AT or shortly thereafter. Even cheats couldn't help with that.
    Nonetheless, the game met our expectations and we thoroughly enjoyed the it.

    I purchased this game with my saved up money as a kid back in the day from either a kb toys or toys-r-us in the u.s, it was $25- $30 I believe. I had recently been introduced to the original trilogy of SW movies on VHS by a family friend. It was one of my best purchases ever at a time when I didn't think to look up reviews for games in magazines, although I did get to play a demo for it and jedi knight on a disc that came with our sony vaio desktop. I put countless hours into this game and still fire it up occasionally to this day. Sadly I only purchased an expansion pak in the last couple of years lol.

    I remember when I first got it, my mom had bought me three games from somewhere and they were 007 goldeneye, duke nukem 64 ( odd choice for a four year old), and Rogue Squadron. Out of all three the one I was weakest in was rogue squadron but many years later I'd say I've become a damn good pilot. I still remember playing as luke skywalker and having a blast with me and all cousins. 10/10 game wish I still had a N64.

    This game is a MASTERPIECE! It also looks amazing on my HDTV today. When you see this game in motion you wonder why all games on the N64 don't look this good. Factor 5 really knew how to push the N64. Again simply amazing!
    I forgot to add that the reason it looks good on my HDTV is because I am using the S-video cable and a S-video to HDMI upscaler adapter to bump the graphics to 1080p. This combined with the N64 Expansion Pak really shows what the N64 was capable of in high rez mode. Without the S-video cable and the upscaler it is almost unplayable on modern TVs. I hope that helps anyone trying to get better picture quality from their N64.

    I feel like the inspiration for this game came from the cheats you can use in Shadows of the Empire flying missions to fly as any craft.
    The last level is a huge space battle between the rebels and the empire. Using the camera secret button combo you can switch from the Millenium Falcon type ship to a TI Fighter, TI Bomber, X Wing, etc.
    They even had their own sprites for the health color shaped like their respective ships even though you could only ever pilot them by using that cheat in the last level. So Lucas Arts may have already had the idea in the works for Rogue Squadron.

    • @thisdudegotreal
      @thisdudegotreal 5 лет назад

      Oh yes. See, there was a cheat in Rogue Squadron to unlock Naboo fighters which were going to be in the sequel.

    Our family picked this up at a flee market along with Zelda: Oracle of Ages (another masterpiece of course), and initially my older brothers could never get past Raid on Sullust (I was too young to get anywhere near that level myself at the time). They of course beat it some time later, and I think one of them got all golds, but it wasn't until a few years after that in like '06 when I was finally old enough (around 10) to finally give this game proper attention (was also grinding Star Fox 64 score runs at the time, very similar endeavors). Just like SF64 I grinded this game into the dust until (the last time I remember playing it during that era) I achieved an all 19 gold run sequentially with no resets.
    The game was really difficult to learn (at least at that age) but very satisfying to master and route/execute strategies effectively. There was definitely some BS involved though, namely in the 10th mission "Prisons of Kessel" where you had to wait for Storm Troopers to run out of the bunkers and kill them individually to reach the "enemies destroyed" quota for gold. The rest of the series is also phenomenal, especially how Rebel Strike allowed you to play through the entirety of Rogue Leader in co-op, but I never found quite the same love for those two as the original even though as I said I wasn't really able to get into this entry until after the series had concluded. I'd definitely like to go back to the GC titles but unfortunately they seem to be two of the worst running titles in my experience on the otherwise amazing Dolphin emulator.

    I got my N64 for Christmas with Mario 64 and Shadows of the Empire. That, to me, was NOT a mixed bag and I loved it.
    Rogue Squadron is timeless and I have no idea how many hours I spent playing it and thinking about it when I wasn't playing it. I would be mowing the lawn or doing PE at school (Physical Education) and thinking about how to improve my time and score in a mission.
    Playing with the different ships and I'm the cockpit view was so immersive.
    I wish to this day that we would get a third proper Rogue Squadron game on modern consoles. RS2 on the game cube is why I bought a game cube. However, RS2's missions were not nearly as timeless. I mostly just played the Death Star 2 attack after defeating RS2, whereas I could still play three quarters of the RS1 missions today.

    What is talked about at 1:54 is one of the reasons this game was so much better than rogue squadron 2. This game actually felt like a singular story, progressing from 1 unknown mission to the next. 2 was just a mash of "greatest hits" and the missions had no cohesion.
