  • GoldenEye 007 is a first-person shooter video game developed by Rare and based on the 1995 James Bond film GoldenEye. It was released for the Nintendo 64 video game console in August 1997. The game features a single-player campaign in which players assume the role of British Secret Intelligence Service agent James Bond as he fights to prevent a criminal syndicate from using a satellite weapon against London to cause a global financial meltdown. The game includes a split-screen multiplayer mode in which up to four players can compete in different types of deathmatch games.

Goldeneye 007 on the nintendo 64. Recorded using a dazzle and hauppage hd pvr gaming edition on original console hardware and cartridge. What is your favourite james bond movie? Is daniel Craig the best bond ever and do you think oddjob is a classic bond character? Let me know your top 5 or top 10 multiplayer moments in death match mode.

To this day I still find it very difficult to believe it was the multiplayer mode that is the thing people still praise this game for and not the excellent single player campaign.
But then again I had no friends when I was younger so I usually prefered to play the single player mode only, and it's difficult to find anyone locally who'd want to play old N64 FPS's split screen with no dual analog support.

Not everyone had the ability to play LAN parties or could afford to play online with the minutes/hours plans for Dial up at that time to just game with people on PC.
However, one console, one cartridge and some friends - be you in Jr High School or at University, Goldeneye was the standard for multiplayer for more people than PC gamers can admit to.
It took Halo, Combat Evolved to dethrone Goldeneye. Nothing on the PS1, PS2 or Game Cube could compete.
Then Halo 2 and 3 dominated online play as cable and DSL internet became commonplace. It took Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare to threaten Halo 3, and MW2 to dethrone it.
While other great shooters existed nothing was bigger than Goldeneye into Halo 1-3 and then CoD4 + MW2.

The problem with current FPS games is level design. It's terrible these days. Look at Turok 2 for mind blowing level design. But current kids would get lost and put the controller down.

What impresses me at first about this game was the fact that enemies would react to being shot in places, this was something I never saw before in a FPS game at the time. This was basically the game of my childhood. Getting the Invincibility cheat and figuring out the two different weapon in each hand bug was my best experiences :)

The method to unlock the cheats was more satisfying than the cheats themselves and was the first game I played that incentivized speedrunning as it did. And it definitely made speedrunning fun for me (but sometimes frustrating, but mostly fun). One of the only games I completed 100% more than a few times. All 3 DKC games being one of the others.
The multiplayer for this was nice but wasn't even somewhat comparable to Perfect Dark (made by the same company), which easily had the best fps multiplayer on the n64 hands down. Rare just massively improved the formula for it. It is interesting but regarding a "Bond Sequel", I always considered Perfect Dark to be that Goldeneye sequel.

As a kid, my friends would come over after school for 4-player Goldeneye multiplayer action! I had a gameshark for my N64 and enabled the cheat options that way instead of beating singleplayer maps within a target time lol. As a kid I beat it on Agent but never Secret Agent or 00 Agent. I just put on a medical LOA from work and ran through it all on my Switch. So much fun!

This is one of those N64 games I never played as a kid but as an adult, so I played it with a modern perspective. And you know what, despite what people say, I think it holds up extremely well. Do I think it's better than modern console FPS games like Bioshock, Rage or even CoD, no those are better games but Goldeneye is still extremely good especially as a multiplayer game. One thing a lot of people forget is how revolutionary the game actually was when it came out. Not only did bring FPS to consoles but it introduced a lot of FPS elements that are now standard like having to reload weapons, hitting different parts of the body doing more damage, mission structure and it's play how you want mentality with having the option to be stealthily. This game was ahead of it's time and is still one of the best N64 games, top 5 easily.

      @n64glennplant  2 года назад

    • @antsbull3370
      @antsbull3370 2 года назад

@@n64glennplant it must be based on the relative budgets and profit margins - the game cost $2 million to develop, the movie cost $60 million, the film studio only takes in half of the raw gross, so would've made $110 million in profit (after their development costs are covered). The game grossed $250 million, so presumably they are talking about there being more profit out of that than what the film profit was.

If there was another flaw to point out, it would be the fact that enemies can't see you unless you in their direct path. That meant in levels such as Archives, Caverns and Aztec, you could be standing right in front of an enemy with only a small un-walkable section in-between you and them and they would not react to your presence. As a result, you could line up a perfect headshot while looking on face-to-face.

This is after I bought the Japanese version because I was convinced (in 2001) the "Klobb" was called the Spyder in the non-US releases. Heh heh. So many great memories, one of the greatest crafted movie-to-game and FPS console titles ever. People who've since claimed this game hasn't aged well don't know fine wine much less a gaming masterpiece. This amazed in 1997, still does today and exceeds production values and attention-to-detail and care today like so few. This was the Golden age of N64. Cheers, Glenn.

I was born the same year in the creation of the Wii, but my father introduced me to this game when I was about 2 years old. For years I feared playing the game as I thought the single player was scary, I eventually grew out of that & instead just played all the levels with cheats. A few months ago I played the game without dying & without cheats (I failed missions about 3 times & aborted 1 time) since I already knew map layouts. My family knows me as being untouchable in multiplayer, especially with remote mines

You are correct in that this was, easily the best movie tie in game ever made. And one of the best games period. However, if we are honest, it hasn't aged well in terms of visuals or controls. What we really need is an HD re-release with no changes other than modernytwin stick controls. It's a huge shame that rare didn't (couldn't) do so for rare replay.

I honestly have nothing but good memories of the single player campaign, I am and will always be a hardcore James Bond fan. My top N64 games are Army men Sarge's Heroes 007 GoldenEye
Resident evil 2 Doom 64 Star Wars Shadows of the empire Robotron 64 and gex 64.

Its not one of My faves either, But I did enjoy it a little more than Goldeneye. Just because I really never got into James Bond movies. However its hard for me to say how I would feel about a lot of N64 titles had I played them back in the day. I grew up with a Snes and PS1, so most of these games I've only played in recent years. Lol

Perfect Dark was better than GoldenEye in almost every way, except that it didn't have the Bond license. I wonder how amazing Perfect Dark could have been if they had built it around a 007 story?

As a kid, this was one of my most enjoyable games and one of the first that came with my 64 back in 1997 with a grey and red controller. Me and my friends use to play this for hours, usually sleeping over and each other house. One time, I we stayed up all night playing and mother got up, but we all just quickly turned off the tv and pretended to sleep. Soon after, we got back up and continued back to it. I never really did know how to unlock the other stages to get the goldengun.

7:58 -- funny you're in the bunker level when asking about favorite memories.. Bunker II is the first mission I ever played, and in the same way Turok's controls originally wowed me, GoldenEye impressed me with it's overall superior design elements.

My favorite Goldeneye 007🌟 memory🎞 of this N64 game is playing in one player mode 👤 trying to unlock 🔓many extra stages🖥 that I never experienced to play in most levels. That's the answer of course👍. As a old school player of Nintendo, when I play this game, I've always trying to figure things out 🤔 about their secret characters👥, stages, levels, and solution. Until now I've known about it 😄. Plus whenever I have a chance, I'm going to play it again🎯. This time with gameshark. I like 💖 to play this game with my friends, family, and guests. That was back then. Years ago.

I'm trying to jog my memory here was this released around Christmas 97? I remember the official Nintendo magazine had one of the most festive issues that year and I'm sure this was part of it. I remember having a VHS of n64 games to be released and the image of driving a tank and shooting a man on the toilet was a no brainer, I had to get it :-)

  • @FurEngel

I really wish they had re-released this game towards the end of the N64 and made a "Platinum Edition", which would have utilized the jumper expansion pak and 64MB rom to have a higher resolution, better graphics, animations, additional levels, and the ability to link 2 N64s together to make a 8 player multiplayer mode! That would have been EPIC!

I remember getting a promo thru the mail from Nintendo of this game announcing it’d be in stores soon and giving me a glimpse on the game. I thought it looked cool (as i thought of every N64 game) at first and started saving to buy it. When it dropped we got so hooked on it. It was unlike any game we’d played before. My boy conquered it quicker than i did and i did love playing the game and beat it but i was never very good at 4p mode as my friend would always get me quickly lol. Looking back it was an awesome game and time to be a gamer, every new game and console was pushing the boundaries of technology at a rapid pace, we just stood there reaping the benefits and enjoying the ride.

So much memories, with my cousins and friends, one of our game modes, was to make teams of 2 and play with the golden gun in the facility, the golden gun appears at the bathroom, the fact that the bathroom has two doors and inside of it there's a wall in the middle of the room makes it execelnt for some frantic and crazy action trying to defend the place and the golden gun, and trying to take the place and the golden gun from the other team,!!!

This game kicks ass. Not only is the single player campaign one of the best fps single player's ever but the multiplayer is super fun and its one of those games i can still get even my casual non gamer friends to play with me... (until i pwn them too hard). My favorite character was always boris because he was so short the other players would shoot over his head a lot more often than the normal size characters.
It helped that this game was based off of goldeneye which is definitely one of the best bond movies ever.

A modern take on Goldeneye 007 controls-
You CAN play the original game the way modern FPS controls work.
    Here is how:
First choose in game controls menu "1.2 solitaire" and use an original N64 controller (sorry Brawler64 I still love you). Now put your left hand on the D-pad for walking and strafing, and your Right hand to use the stick for looking and aiming only. Change the inverted or non-inverted as desired "Reverse" or "Upright" in game. The right index finger is now to shoot. Your left index finger is now to aim with the L button. This functions similar to and mimics the hand assignments of most modern FPS and newer controllers. This fixes the original tank-like control option that a lot of kids used back in the day.
BTW, you can also use these similar controls for Duke Nukem64, Turok, Doom64, Quake 2 already has this control setting by default!

I used to play this daily with my brothers till Halo came on the original xbox out but still that is a very good run for any game. I hate to say as a PC gamer ( but really I buy at least 2 consoles and hand helds every gen) this but this was my first exposure to the fps genre and what an incredible game to be expose to the genre. Remember local multi player? it seems almost every gamer has forgotten about it and that's a shame. Having 4 people huddle around the TV playing Golden Eye or Perfect Dark it becomes one insane wild party, or hooking up 4 xboxs around a friends house having 8 on 8 Halo action and it becomes a night that you won't ever forget or CS lan parties were a whole a lot of fun too. This is why games like Golden Eye will always be one of my strongest nostalgic moments because they gave me awesome memories of playing together with a lot friends before they started to moving to different schools, different places, changes of interest etc.

The way to play multiplayer instead of License to Kill mode is to set everybody’s health to handicap -10. Then headshots are one hit kills, but if you get pegged in the arm by a Klobb, you’ll just lose a little health.

I remember running through trying to beat get all the cheats. I must've played through Facility @ least 300 times before I beat in 2:02, 3 seconds shy of the alotted! If that damn scientist, Dr. Doak, is not in the precise location (the hallway), you have to start all over because you won't beat it in time.
Many an awesome death match played on this classic..
    Exceptional review.

Arh yes the mighty Goldeneye! Endless nights of various friends coming to my converted garage sleep out/hangout for multi player battle. My cousin was freakishly good at this game... I was not bad... Together we were unstoppable. We would fox people into believing that we were average players then suddenly challenge them to a battle with money, food, alcohol... Maybe even a bit of pot being gambled for the winner. We never lost. Me being the aggressor and my cuzzy being the tactical ninja. A great game that is often lost to the youth of today.

My unpopular opinion was that single player game was better than multiplayer. When this game came out it didn't light the world on fire. People seem to distort reality like this game was a phenomenon, And every kid begged their parents for it. How did this get to that? The power of persuasion made this game legendary

Calling it the 'best game ever made' is a pretty big stretch, considering it has aged pretty bad. If a game is classic, it should age like fine wine, not two week old meatloaf.

That kind of view does however relegate personal experiences and most games made before a certain period. It has aged poorly, but that doesn't take away from the fact that it was a revolutionary and incredible game at the time. Give it 20 years and the new generation of kids will be saying the exact same thing to you about the latest and greatest games we have today I'm sure.
