imo this aged way better than goldeneye DUE to the sprite based models. I can play doom, duke nukem, blood, shadow warrior etc. and the graphics won't bother me a bit.

Hands down my favourite version of Doom. I loved the eerie background ambience and dark tone. It perfectly captured the feeling of being alone in some kind of hell dimension. Really sent chills down my spine. And the controls were just sublime (after some tweaking), so much better than fumbling with directional keys on a keyboard (which was standard back then).
It's also remarkable how well it still plays. Quiet ironic that a game that was outdated even before its release is actually more playable today than several other games that really pushed the boundaries back then.

Excellent review. I enjoy Doom 64 to this day. I like that they delivered a completely new experience to the N64 rather than just another port of the PC version. Similarly, the audio changes really add to the atmosphere of the game. The music isn't pumping you up with MIDI guitars or toe-tapping techno, but rather setting a mood of creepiness and dread (much like Quake II for the N64). There were some amazing FPS titles for the system and this is one of the best IMO.

Simplistic? Not really, the older FPS games had puzzles and labyrinthine levels which were puzzles in themselves, and having to weave you way around enemy projectiles circle strafing enemies in sometimes large areas while keeping an eye on your health and strategically picking up health. Nowadays shooters are more straight forward linear affairs with stop and pop gameplay funneling you from one set piece to another. If anything, games have gotten more simplistic, not more complex. It'd have been nice to have gone more down the path of FEAR-like AI or Rainbow SIx type planning, but now things are more streamlined so everyone can enjoy them.

You clearly have no idea what he is talking about. He's clearly talking about xp, bonuses, teams build, load outs, accessories, leveling up your weapons, secondary functions, so on and so on! This was a simpler time in shooters.

Great review of a wonderful game that as an older player at this stage of my life (62) I now remember with fond memories playing on it's initial release on N64 with my young son back in the day, along with such other greats as Turok, Golden-eye and Quake. I remember giving my son, who at the time was 10, an N64 game player for Christmas when it first came out and we were immediately addicted as a father son team playing games on the platform. I should be ashamed of myself for introducing my impressionable young son to the wonderful world of "evil" FPS games! :-)
I believe I became even more addicted than he was! I remember many late nights staying up until 3 and 4 am playing this dark and thoroughly engrossing game.
I would rate Turok as my favorite but this game was definitely a very close 2nd place!
Thanks for the memories for this old man's memory bank.

I grew up playing Doom on the SNES and it quickly became one of my favorites. I never heard of Doom 64 until many years later when I didn't even had a Nintendo 64 anymore. What I expected when I heard of it, was Doom on the Quake engine (but I realized of that expectation much later) and when I saw those outdated graphics in comparison to Goldeneye (which was my favorite game in the N64) I didn't even bothered with getting it. Curiously, what changed my mind about it was when I saw some footage of someone playing it on RUclips and had this red bleeding transition effect at the end of the levels, which no emulator was capable of displaying it. I got the game just to see that effect for myself and I ended up getting a game that would become one of my favorites. Then I understood the approach, it's Doom with different levels, custom scripting and graphics, but still behaves and looks like classic Doom.
A little thing: Midway actually planned to include multiplayer (and as a leftover, there is code to define different colored marines, which you can see in the opening sequence) but they ran out of cart space and time was running short, so they scrapped the idea. It's a pity, one of the strongest points of Doom on the PC was the multiplayer.

I started playing this just recently and was impressed with the quality. They could probably have gotten away with a straight-forward port of the original, but I found myself playing an original game with great qualities. Especially the level design and music made this a good and very distinct experience, and I have to say that it's rare to see a game with colored lighting from 1997 that doesn't look like a christmas tree.

Fantastic review as always! I remember renting this for the 64, and having read nothing about it, really having it be a totally welcome surprise with the new levels/content. It took a bit to get back in the flow again, since I was playing a LOT of Quake online at the time, but even then it gave me some great nostalgic feelings for the series as a whole. And honestly, I liked a LOT of the visuals better than the PC counterpart, especially the pre-rendered looking enemy sprites.

I remember the warning when you turn on the game, they tell you that this game is dark, very dark. It truly is a dark game, most of it is in the lighting and background "music". It kept all the aspects that made the original great but added a darker, more horror aspect that we have known with Doom 3.

I know Im some years of but I still felt that I needed to post a comment. I remember myself in this story. We (me and my brothers) got a 64 for chrismas 97 an ALL games where sold out. Lyckely for us our mom knew the guy in the toy store so he was kind and lend my mom a "show copy" of a game which was.... MRC! The evening was saved. We later went out to buy our first game. I was the one who got the mission. I went to the mall to se what I could find. We wanted Goldeneye but it was weeks before it would return in stock. I chose Doom 64. Took my bike home (it was dark outside) and was so eager to try the game!! But we had played some Goldeneye with friends before and the game couldn't really replace it. It felt... Old... We also got stuck (didn't know there was a button for running) so we left it back and bought Super Mario 64. Im really eager (again) to try this game out. Im pretty sure I bought it a while ago... Maiby after Im finish with Shadow of the tomb radier. Or maiby in a retro evening with my brothers!

When I bought Doom 64, it wasn't my favorite game on the N64. But now it's the only game I keep going back to. No other Doom has such a sinister atmosphere that inspires me. I agree that the AI could be better. Not that I want them to duck and cover, but rather to make it out of corners and chase you through the level if necessary.
Midway had originally planned to put multiplayer, more weapons, and more demons, but them being a regular game company, they wanted to meet deadlines so it ended up being scrapped.
I think they might have known the engine looked a bit outdated as well. This is why they made new sprites and probably why they rushed it a bit to release.

Playing games from the 5th generation of consoles today, it's the games that were "out of date" or "yesterday's news" at release that actually hold up the best. Doom 64 is one of those games. The frame rate is high because of the lack of polygonal enemies, and the 2D sprites themselves look better today than any of the blocky 3D models from other games.
I was in middle school when this game was released and I was highly influenced by the gaming press (the actual magazines as I wouldn't have Internet access until November '98). This game only generated marginal reviews from most of the outlets at the time so I passed over it.
When I finally picked it up around 2009/2010 I was blown away. Great atmosphere, great game play, impressive graphics... just an overall pleasure.
Today I'd much rather play stylized games from that era than envelope pushers. Back in 1997 I balked at games like Symphony of the Night that didn't have "advanced 3D graphics". Now those types of games are the most desired.

On the critcism of the game being dark, try Doom 1 or 2 with Chocolate Doom. You'd be shocked at how dark Doom genuinely is on the original engine without all of the fancy renders and source ports that upped the lighting effects. It was such a scary game at the time for a reason, and not just because of the enemies that jump out at you.

I’m sorry I don’t know how this game could have flopped I have a personal relationship with this game. I love it and played it for years. I still want to play it and i would play doom on the hardest difficulty. I never got to play hardcore mode. I wish Doom 64 2 existed. Doom64 will always be a treasure. I played it because my uncle had the game and I quickly fell in love with it as a kid

I was so excited for this game back them, I borrowed it from a friend, I played it not too much, I don't remember why, and I never played it again, until now, I must say that the game is slow at the beginning , but once you go to hell the games becomes the real DOOM , level desing is amazing, and frame rate is smooth , light effects are amazing, it's indeed the classic doom I have played so far. What I don't like is that some puzzles are very complicated compared to doom 1 and 2 .

How do I remember Doom 64? Well, in my household we had a Sony PlayStation and gaming PCs back in 1997 so unfortunately I didn't get a chance to play Doom 64 back then. I'd seen all kinds of reviews though and desperately longed to play it because the graphics looked far better than Doom 1 & 2 which my brother and I played almost daily in online coop mode. I'm playing it now though via the several fanmade PC ports (specifically Doom 64 Retribution). Overall I'm very much enjoying it. I get the feeling that Doom 64 was meant to bring in new players to Doom but failed. ID Software was too busy showing off Quake/Quake 2 and GoldenEye was catching our hearts and nostalgia back then.

This is one of the very few Doom titles that I haven't played yet (and thankfully, it was recently released on Steam). When I got my N64, the games I bought for it were Goldeneye and Banjo-Kazooie and ended up skipping Doom 64, but I remember talking to a lot of my friends at the time and them saying just how awesome it was, but I was too busy playing 007. I kinda want to play it now though, if for nothing else but to say I played all of the old school Doom titles.

Given how the old Doom Games have stood the test of time, Doom 64 has a strong following to the point where it's being sold for modern systems, and the new Doom games are huge hits with modern gamers.
I think it's safe to say that the "King of High school" came out on top in the end.

Doom 64, such a great game. To think it was made for console, N64 of all of them. It pushed the Doom experience about as far as youd like to. Great mood, atmosphere, graphics, sound. The only thing I disagree with the video on is Mr Plant saying the "flat" aka 2D sprite enemies were somehow a problem. To me it keeps the game Doom-like by keeping enemies as 2D sprites. They did a great job upgrading the enemies slightly, just enough but kept them recognizable. Also they kept the same sound effects. Definitely the true "Doom 3" game.

My absolute favorite Doom game. I remember renting this and was blown away. I then found it at a bargain bin for 20 bucks and played the heck out of it trying to find every secret I could.
You know what makes this game so special ? The level design and ambient soundtrack. It was just so different for Doom. The earlier levels were military bases and the later levels in hell were the real gems on this masterpiece.
Sure the gameplay was same old Doom, but that didn't matter. Play through this game at night, by yourself and feel the mood Midway created with this game. You will feel it. It's an extremely dark depressing game, but that's what I loved about it. Still holds up til this day. And thank goodness for Doom64 EX which makes this game look even better on PC.
And I'll always remember the cheat code no matter what : ?TJL BDFW BFGV JVVB

So yeah, sound effects were awesome, and I totally fell in love with the music from the start. My favorite thing though is the level design. I used to (and still do, actually) create Doom 2 maps and as a mapper I can appreciate well designed levels. Doom 64 did excellently at it.

Thanks this video brought back some fun memories. I picked up Doom 64 on its release and never owned Goldeneye until my friends gifted me a copy when the next console cycle began. Doom 64 was a fun overall refinement of the original Doom with a soundtrack that grew on me as I played though it. My only gripe I had with this version is the CG- rendered monsters looked a little more cartoony to me vs the clay model-based monsters in the original games.

Great vid Glenn, you cant go wrong with a bit of Doom and Doom 64 is definitely a underrated hidden gem on the N64 and the Doom franchise, I recently picked up Doom 3 BFG edition and I was thinking it was such a shame that they didnt include Doom 64 as they threw in Doom 1 and 2, it would be so awesome if they re-released it for download or something.

While I can see your point on the lackluster AI, Doom has always (until Doom 3) relied upon the hordes-of-enemies style of AI, which I think is what Doom is best at. GoldenEye employed different combat mechanics that encouraged smarter AI scripting in response to the player's greater control and tactical options (sniper rifle, grenades, full freedom of aiming). With this in mind, Doom 64 is a run-and-gun shooter while GoldenEye requires planning and careful aim. Excellent review, all in all.

That is interesting, I never knew that Doom 64 is its own game and not just a port of the classic and I'm pretty sure most people don't know, thats probably the reason why this gets so overlooked. This really deserves a rerelease somehow or atleast a release on the virtual console if Nintendo would finally get their shit together.

I'm fine with it not being just a port, but not having the Doom music really kicks it down a notch. They went the Doom 3 route (well, you could say Doom 3 went the 64 route since it came after) and made it focus more on the spooky darkness instead of being a heavy-metal-infused grindhouse bloodbath.
Still, all I have to do is sit my laptop next to me, load up to Doom soundtrack and it's like I'm playing Classic Doom all over again.

I honestly enjoyed doom 64 more then original Doom, I liked the darker atmosphere and the music is better. And weapons have more impactful sound effects. I found the levels easier to navigate, and the difficulty curve wasn't as much. It offered me enough challenge but it didn't get frustrating.

Great graphic and soundtrack, amazing atmosphere. Fast action, no frame rate drops, interesting and fun to use weapons. The only problem I have with this game is level design. I was never fan of this box levels, like go up down left right, find blue key, find red key, find yellow key. After 10 levels doing same thing it become very boring and repetitive. If this game have progression levels like Goldeneye this game would be 10/10 for me.

They should have included multiplayer, but it is a very interesting game. The lighting, the special scripts, the atmosphere, the ambient soundtrack. And there are quite a few levels. Some of the traps though are just brutal and mean-spirited.
