Nice video. I worked on this game ( I built all the stadiums, and created most of the intro sequence etc). What many people don't know is there a couple of "easter eggs" in it. One is the ability to unlock Golcar Utd (the small village I lived in just outside Huddersfield).
I was playing this game a few days ago and remembered the controls after just a couple of games, I remember playing this every weekend during 1998/1999/2000 and it was amazing.
I reckon I sunk about 100 hours into this game. Loved it so much. I agree it hasn't aged well and the frame rate is a bit choppy but it has a great atmosphere and is good for a quick arcade match.
World cup 98 was my favorite, it was the first world cup I watched as a kid and we were always going to France on holidays. It was a very special time for me
Great timing for review, Glenn. This game was everywhere mid - 98. Game was pretty nicely done as well. High production values. Night and rain - settings were impressive, in particular.
For me 2006 was the best cup World Cup. It had everything you need drama wise , I will never forget the Fabio grosso goal in the semi-final and the emotion after that goal truly breathtaking
I remember buying this game on day of release for N64 and loving the all-white box. Favourite World Cup was 2002. I went to Japan to see 2 of England's group games (vs Argentina & Nigeria). I predict that Germany will win this year's tournament.
I loved this game and this world cup! Im Dutch and man, what a team we had in those days. Bergkamp, Kluivert, Overmars. But also Brasil, France and Italy where outstanding.
World Cup 98 was the first one I cared about but my favourite was actually 2002. There was something cool and different about waking up and watching football at 7 in the morning having breakfast due to the time difference with Japan and South Korea. The game for that World Cup was pants though
loved it and I truly forgot how many stray pixels were present but this and sensible soccer on the Amiga was and still is football at it`s best :) Your video brought a stinging tear to my eye, thank you my friend :)
I absolutely loved this game . My dad was a boomer construction worker who wasn’t very tech savvy but when I was a kid he loved getting stoned and playing this game against me and my brothers
Remember borrowing this off a friend as he didn’t like football. Loving the intro track. Though I was more into ‘3 lions’ than ‘vindaloo’. Well, as with most English fans, we know we aren’t going to win the World Cup, but also can’t help but get caught up in the action of it. So want them to win so badly. But with such a young squad this is a free hit for them and no expectations from anyone. I got Portugal in the sweepstake at work so will also be cheering them on.
I think France have a really good chance of winning this years cup, but im going to cheer for Colombia anyway, and theres a chance we face England in the round of 16, so i wish you luck
I remember playing International Superstar Soccer 64 and never saw the FIFA World Cup 98 game on the shelf, maybe it was not released in Australia at a large number of copies compared to the PlayStation and PC versions. Though I loved how Konami's ISS had international teams in their own world league. I did make up for it by getting the other FIFA World Cup video games afterwards and felt that the Germany 2006, South Africa 2010 and Brazil 2014 as the games got better and better once when the XBox 360 and PS3 games were released.
ISS 98 was the best soccer game on the system by far. The system sadly didn't get as many soccer games as it got baseball or american football games. As for favorite world cups? 98 was really fun.
This was to me the best N64 Sport Game and "SOCCER" Game to me. I remember when I was editing the backnumbers of the german team and the hair and look :D Pro Evo on PS3 was the last Game I tried and I would say it was fun, afterward not my cup of tea and lost too much time in choosing players and how the team is placed etc
98 and 02 are probably my favourites, 02 may shade it just because I was a bit more aware of what was going on, and we got official time off school to watch the games, they basically had to ‘cause no one would have showed up anyway. I was a paperboy at the time and when Owen scored vs Brazil I heard everyone screaming from their houses just as I was finishing my round. 06, ‘10 don’t really stand out to me. 14’ was pretty nice with it being in Brazil and I got to watch it in two separate countries. Hopefully this can be a memorable one. As for a winner it’s really hard to pick but I’ll go for France.
It was a nice year for games, and was child so, enjoyed a lot . I had this for the Psx, also had Fifa Road to Workd Cup 98. Played a F# lot of it. The best World Cup ever, lots of good teams: England, Brazil, France, Netherlands, Argentina... 2018: Iceland all the way
Being Irish I'd have to say Italia 90 was my favourite World Cup, even though I was only 6 at the time, I remember Packie Bonner making that save in the penalty shootout against the mighty,,,Romania 😁
N64 Glenn Plant Oh yeah we beat Italy which was great but Italia 90 is still more talked about here as it was the birth of ole, ole, ole and the great song Put 'Em under pressure 🤣
Fantastic, my favourite football game alongside ISS 64. I prefer WC 98 to FIFA 99, just feels more realistic, and the keepers are all round excellent. Though judging by the video frame pacing rather than framerate could well be the issue? I'll need to boot it up again to play. Thanks Will.
My favorite football game of N64. Also was the first game i had in this console. Yeah, ISS 2000 its better than this game, but I played this title much more time.
Good game for the time but like most of these old footy games they haven't aged particularly well though. Still brings back some great memories seeing them. Fave world cup was probably '98 , Young teen, lots of drinking and singing Fat Les & 3 Lions.. pretty much same as you dude lol.
0:15 yes indeed, in particular Michael Owen was phenomenal back then. Not to forget Beckham, Scholes or Alan Shearer. Though I think you will agree that Seaman is a horrible goalkeeper (Free kick 2002 for instance).
Yeah I definitely have no interest in this game aside from filling its spot on the shelf but, I can certainly appreciate the late 90s nostalgia! I was just a little kid but I remember everything just seemed so fresh and fun. It's easy to say "that's just because you were a kid and everything was awesome" but I think it really was just a more happy and prosperous time. I think I would feel a lot more "in my element" if I were in my mid-twenties then instead of now. Maybe I'm wrong, there was plenty of things to be cynical about in the 90s as well :)
Hey man, I haven't played any soccer games on 64, but I like your reviews. What setup do you use for video? CRT TV? I'm trying to find best picture for my 64. I have a s-video/comp to hdmi converter on a plasma and have tried HDTV in the past with same setup and the system just looks terrible. As always good job with review man.
I play this game on PS1 with some school friends. We always make Russia world cup winner there, even if in reality team even not qualified. Fav champs... maybe 2006 maybe. I never see live old WC, only some matches. So I don't know. 1970 & 1978 looks good too.
Hmm. I may have to do a couple of World Cup related videos.. I would have to say my favourite World Cup was 2002 in JAPAN/SOUTH KOREA. Just seems the most vivid in my mind. I won't however, be watching the World Cup, as I am appalled by the direction it's going in (Russia, Qatar, 48 teams etc...). FRANCE may nick it. I don't think the South American teams are good enough.
I don't like football. In fact, I hate football and i generally avoid the hype as best as I can when it kicks off every 2 years. Having said that This is one of the 3 football games I ever gave a damn about, especially the N64 version. Because it's so easy to get in to and control. An analog stick and 2 buttons are all I ever needed. ( ISS 64 and Nintendo World Cup on the Nes, are the other two for anybody wondering. )
This years winner? Well other than just say wait for a few weeks and I will give you my thoughts of who the winner will be, I would have to say at the 1st of July as I am writing this, I would have to say Uruguay and maybe even Brazil are my choices to win. Would love to see Japan do well as I love the Blue Samurai as a international team outside my own country that is Australia with their Socceroos already eliminated after failing to get past the group stage. Always wanted to see Japan do well as an Asian nation and often played as them in ISS 64 back in the day. England of course I would love to see win a world cup tournament but my money's on Uruguay and Brazil at this point in time.
Never actually played a FIFA game on the N64. My brother and I were ISS purists all the way back as far as the original on the SNES and we wouldn't dare touch this dirty FIFA shit with their fancy real team and player names! Half the fun of ISS was renaming your entire team to be the cast of Aliens. My brother was a Brazil fanboy and I was mad into Italy so there was a big rivalry going there between us as early teenagers. My favourite world cup then had to be 94 because of that final which of course Brazil had to win and resulted in our rivalry growing even further. And also in 94 my country, Ireland, actually qualified and there was that magic Ray Houghton goal plus I was at an age where I could appreciate it whereas I was just too young for Italia 90.
N64 Glenn Plant I think it varies from year to year, sometimes FIFA is better, sometimes it's PES. Losing the champions league is a massive loss for PES and coupled with its low sales and Konami's general lack of interest in games these day, I think PES isn't long for this world.
i forget which fifa game i had for n64. i liked it alot. in fact i love lots of soccer videogames. i am american..so maybe the following statement makes sense in the landscape and culture of sports here...soccer is the best VIDEOGAME sport..it translates to videogaming almost perfectly and is incredibly fun and exciting on pc or console....while (simultaneously) from my perspective one of the WORST REAL LIFE sports to an american viewer. The real thing is boring and borderline unwatchable IMHO. the konami takes on soccer on n64 are on the short list of best sports games ever made!
For me this is the best football game on N64. The lack of licenses made me lose interest in the ISS series and the World Cup mode was enough for me to prefer it over FIFA 99. I played this game for 15 years, so many full world cups with my father and my younger brother (born in 2001).
I feel exactly the same about 1998. It was an amazing year.
Nice video. I worked on this game ( I built all the stadiums, and created most of the intro sequence etc). What many people don't know is there a couple of "easter eggs" in it. One is the ability to unlock Golcar Utd (the small village I lived in just outside Huddersfield).
Haha that’s a very cool Easter egg! I always enjoy seeing devs for various games I’ve covered pop up in the chat!
That is fantastic
i love this game!! whenever i get together with friends, this is what we play. so glad you finally reviewed it
I’ve been waiting until this year ha
I was playing this game a few days ago and remembered the controls after just a couple of games, I remember playing this every weekend during 1998/1999/2000 and it was amazing.
I reckon I sunk about 100 hours into this game. Loved it so much. I agree it hasn't aged well and the frame rate is a bit choppy but it has a great atmosphere and is good for a quick arcade match.
Yeah it’s an instant time capsule of a very cool time in life
Great vid man, so nostalgic about this one as well as FIFA 98... Played waaaaay too much of that game back in the day haha
World cup 98 was my favorite, it was the first world cup I watched as a kid and we were always going to France on holidays. It was a very special time for me
Great year wasn’t it
Great timing for review, Glenn. This game was everywhere mid - 98. Game was pretty nicely done as well. High production values. Night and rain - settings were impressive, in particular.
Yeah I also think that footie fever gripped the nation when this was released to help sales 😬
you're spoiling me with all these uploads glenn lol
Would you like another ferrero rocher ambassador?
N64 Glenn Plant LOL
Looking back at this game, i am so impressed at the amount of detail they added to this game. The compression technique must of been something.
See when you look at fifa 99 that was the real deal for the time visually
I absolutely love this game, it’s an amazing game that actually is fun to even play today
Agree with everything you say about the year 1998
pretty awesome yeah right
@@n64glennplant Best year in gaming easily.
For me 2006 was the best cup World Cup. It had everything you need drama wise , I will never forget the Fabio grosso goal in the semi-final and the emotion after that goal truly breathtaking
jmyogi17 Del pierro's wasn't bad either, some game that was.
Del pierros a legend 😍
One of my favourite football games. I played the heck out of it.
Yeah many hours in this bad boy
The only reason to play an EA game instead of a Konami game was that EA also had club teams + seasons.
But this game hadn't.
I remember buying this game on day of release for N64 and loving the all-white box. Favourite World Cup was 2002. I went to Japan to see 2 of England's group games (vs Argentina & Nigeria). I predict that Germany will win this year's tournament.
Yeah the box was very cool I liked the style of it
I loved this game and this world cup! Im Dutch and man, what a team we had in those days. Bergkamp, Kluivert, Overmars. But also Brasil, France and Italy where outstanding.

Haha yeah I remember going to the pub to watch games and they served full English fry up with pints - lovely
This was my first soccer game ever. I had fun with it. Great video as always!
Thanks max!
I also loved playing this game with my uncle :-)
Awesome 👍
loved it and I truly forgot how many stray pixels were present but this and sensible soccer on the Amiga was and still is football at it`s best :)
Your video brought a stinging tear to my eye, thank you my friend :)
I absolutely loved this game . My dad was a boomer construction worker who wasn’t very tech savvy but when I was a kid he loved getting stoned and playing this game against me and my brothers
A new review? AND in 60fps?! Now if only you would stop stretching your games to widescreen XD
Thanks mister Plant
Stops copyright warnings from the RUclips fun police 👮♀️😂
There's my answer! I play the video back in VLC so I can squish it back anways

I got Uruguay and South Korea 😂😂😂
World Cup 2010 was magical, loved the vibe
Not a bad one, lacked magic IMO
I never played the console Fifas, only the PC 1998 one.
But man, looking at this video, the visual difference is IMMENSE.
Fantastic video man, I agree with you about the year 98 .. especially in football .. the nostalgia in the video!
always takes me back to the good ole days does this !
Oh lord, yes, I REMEMBER. Thanks for the memories Glenn:)
You’re welcome 👍
This was the first console game I ever played.
Can't go wrong with Chumbawumba.
Doesn’t touch fat les - vindaloo though 🤙🏼
I think no one will ever made football game what will next gen of kids remember like we remember this one..
I think France have a really good chance of winning this years cup, but im going to cheer for Colombia anyway, and theres a chance we face England in the round of 16, so i wish you luck
I rate them too, Germany will be strong as ever too

Mu first ever game but for PS1
I remember that intro music was so great
So many memories
98 was indeed a great year! 20 years ago, wow.
Makes you feel old too right
N64 Glenn Plant proper old 👴
I played this so much as a kid. Took Trinidad and Tobago to the championhip

As for favorite world cups? 98 was really fun.
Do you prefer iss 98 over 2000?
I used to love trying to lose games via forfeit for getting sent off
Haha or diving to get red cards

My favourite Football game with Iss 64 on the console, I love the Commentator
I like iss 98 and 2000 so much
I also have the 2000 version, with the story mode, I don't have Iss 98 unfortunately, but I can play it on my Everdrive 64 :)
First 3D football game i ever played.
First computer game i ever bought.
This was cutting edge at the time :P
Yeah and now when you look back you see how far games have come hey
yes I also played this game on my N64 and I have to say the framerate is quite low compared to other titles.
I was a big fan of ISS series
Me too, way better than fifa
I have this game, its great, saludos desde Mexico.
'Easy for the keeper, who collects the ball'

N64 Glenn Plant nice 👍, she must have seen some of the stadiums going up
I miss when the World Cup was hosted in progressive Western democracies instead of brutal human rights violating dictatorships!
Amen to that Blake!

1994 was the best world cup ever... at least among the ones I got the chance to watch.
That was a good one indeed
0:15 yes indeed, in particular Michael Owen was phenomenal back then. Not to forget Beckham, Scholes or Alan Shearer.
Though I think you will agree that Seaman is a horrible goalkeeper (Free kick 2002 for instance).

I have the ultra hdmi mod so I directly connect it to my 5k iMac 👍

Yup and long waiting lists still
If I understand your RTTWC'98 review, that also contains the tournament itself. Is there any point playing this one then? Or am I missing something?

The only bad star I d give to this game is about the ball size. Great game, I had It.
I had FIFA 99 when I was young. Unfortunately, it didn't age well. Thank you for the video but my country will probably not win this time :p
Who’s your country
The one that won 20 years ago

Yeah not too bad hey
N64 Glenn Plant what N64 game have the best visuals in your opinion?
France with Pogba and Greisman, Mbappe I reckon look the goods.
Yeah looking decent this year
England in 98 was nothing compared to Brazil and the Netherlands. Shame France bought the title by making Brazil play without Ronaldo.
1990
Oh man, what a tournament and music that year was 😍😍😍😍
diving was the most fun.
ISS 98 was a much better game. Italia '90 was the best World Cup, that I can remember as I wasn't around in '66
I think iss2000 has the edge for me over 98 because of the RPG mode
