    Interesting video and viable tests for a real life situation, good to know the clear winner is the 10 mm auto. As much as revolvers can be more powerful, shot placement is clearly the most important aspect of this type of defensive situation but speed seems as important. The takeaway here is that it can happen so fast that the person must have a primary plan and a backup plan and maybe don't venture out alone in bear country.

    Another excellent video. This test should be a real wake up call for those who advocate handguns of .44 mag. power level and higher, such as the 454 Casull, 500 S&W, 480 Ruger, etc. Follow up shots are next to impossible compared to 10 mm, 45 ACP and 40 S&W, which are a good compromise between stopping power and multiple hits. It would be interesting to see how a double action 357 mag revolver works out against the charging bear target.

      Who says you're going to get a follow up shot against a grizzly? They are fast. I'd rather have a couple powerful rounds than a magazine that will remain mostly full. I can shoot my 44 mag almost as well as my 10mm. Both run hot handloads. So the 10mm really isn't getting on target much faster at all. And I practice shooting the 44 mag one handed because my other hand might be protecting myself. And it still isn't hard to get back on target. The 44 mag isn't as bad as what people make it out to be. If I can one hand it with hot loads, most gun savvy people can.

      Yes as a speciality bullet series inventor for Hunting and Wilderness Defense purposes I agree.
      For Wilderness Defense situations against Bears, time and multiple experiences have shown that the; 10mm,40S&W, 45 calibers even the 9mm to be effective against Bears with the right loades of ammunition. Which are Hard Cast Lead Flat Nose bullets with stout powder charges.
      The 41 Magnum, is considered by many people to be a better choice rather than the 44 Magnum.

Murphy always shows up at the wrong time. Look, not arguing what was just proven on this video, but there are other factors to consider. No need to respond. Just saying, both gun styles have pros and cons.

      @Thomas Dean
      During the 1980's I purchased a brand new Ruger Police Service Six 357 magnum revolver. I fired it 18 rounds when all of a sudden, upon pulling the trigger, the cylinder no longer moved, and the cylinder release would not function. I brought that revolver back to the gun shop where the shops gun smith fixed it. After firing 12 rounds, the same situation occurred. This continued for 3 more occasions after the Gunsmith each time fixed it. Finally, I made the store take it back.
      Similarly, I had a Charter Arms Bulldog revolver broke twice in the same issues; the Hand and Bolt Block. I had to go twice to the factory to get it right.
      In 30 years of both Military and Civilian Law Enforcement I was able in every situation to quickly overcome Failure to Fire or a Feed Jam in a semi automatic Pistol. Not so with a revolver!
      Because of these experiences, I carry both a revolver and pistol as well as long blades knifes while out and about in areas where dangerous apex predatorial animals are known to be around.

And if you practice with a 44 mag, the recoil isn't really that bad. I've hand loaded some nasty rounds for it and practice shooting one handed effectively. I may be using the other hand to protect myself. If I can do that, I think most other gun savvy people can. The recoil really isn't that bad.

You could certainly forget getting off a second shot with the severe recoil of that combination I as well as it being single action. Excellent video!!! You did a great job showing the different reaction with both guns. And your a great shot with all the action going on but I think the 10 mm would be the way to go especially if you factor in the possible element of surprize that a bear would have, and the feeling of dirting your shorts as you try to get your gun out :-)

    It’s really scary how little time a person would have. I had a grizzly encounter a couple years ago when I did a bicycle ride from Canada to Mexico. All I had was bear spray, I’m not sure I could have deployed it fast enough. This video exemplifies how useless my 500 S&W Emergency Survival Kit would be in an actual bear attack. Thanks for sharing.

    • @gunsgearoutdoorsalaska5875

      @@sstritmatter2158 a solid hit with a +p range hard cast 44 is pretty effective but can you get a hit..? that’s the question. real bear took 8 rds from an M1 Garand, coming thru the kitchen window of our house on Airport Rd, Fairbanks. If he'd been able to get better footing, my wife may have been killed, but his hips stuck in the window and the porch didnt reach under the window. 2 rds 30-06 in the head, 4 in the chest, 2 in the shoulders-he backed out and walked away. Game warden got him in the alley 5 min later, he had over 200 bullets in him, ranging from 9mm to my 06. According to the vet they took him to, he could have survived ALL of it until the warden used a 300WM behind the head at 25yds. Wife took me to the Sportsman's center on post and got me a 300WM that afternoon.

    Great demo using a moving target. I chose the 10mm as my preferred handgun for bear self defense, a few years ago. I can get off more shots in the kill zone with my Glock 20 in 10mm than I can with my .460 S&W magnum revolver.

      Are you f****** kidding me dude and I know you're practicing on a stationary Target, you have more faith in a 10 mm than I do, and you do realize you're not going to get more than one or two shots off

  • @dipitydoodaa2397
    @dipitydoodaa2397 Год назад +1

    Good video. The speed surprised me. I don’t know if that’s accurate bear speed since there are a lot of variables that didn’t get tested. Like why wait to shoot? As soon as you see the bear, at least draw! There is no sense of running from it in the snow. Shooting with the .44 the bear would’ve been on you! The target was abreast of you when you got the .44 shot off. “Maybe” the impact of the shot would’ve slowed the beast down, but if it didn’t kill it you’re in trouble. Waaay too many “experts” downplay the effectiveness of the “underpowered” 10mm in bear country. They prefer the big hand cannons in a one-shot-one-kill scenarios. This video shot down (no pun intend) many of those assumptions. Good video.

    This was an awesome test. Thanks for validating my choice of an FN510 over a Smith 686 for bear country. I know that .357 and .44 mag are more powerful rounds but 10mm is proven to get the job done. Plus its way faster and you get 15+1 in the gun. This is a no-brainer for me.

    You are an excellent shooter and this made it look hard for even you. The 44mag was truly a humbling experience for sure. If you carry the 44 before the beasts come out of den, you better practice the moving target a lot. I’m thinking you still had a decent chance of surviving the attack with the 10 though. It will be good to see how the long guns work. May want to make sure you always carry one of those. We will see next week 👍
    Excellent work as always, thanks much for the eye opening lessons.

    This helps me decide on what I want to carry for hiking. Bear country in the rockies, so no alaskian bears but still bears, 10mm makes more sense given more shops, likely to help make a bear think twice if it is charging.

    Genius video for anyone thinking about bear defense, but off topic his footwear choice is interesting too. I've recently gotten into the rubber boots for snow, they just work for keeping water out and can be warm with enough wool socks. Strap some good snow shoes over those? I didn't even think of that, but it might help me sit inside less during winter.

    Great video, following the old saying train like you fight. I am in my early 60,s but very fit and just like the idea of a revolver (not saying I'm right, just old and set in my ways) for bear protection. I have a S&W 686 plus in a 4 inch barrel but felt it wasn't enough for hiking in brown bear country with my daughter and grandson. Ended up buying a Colt 6 in Anaconda 44 mag, also purchased the Winchester Big Bore 44 magnum 240 grain SJHP to go with it. Like most of us I was happy to have an excuse to buy a new gun :) and I always regretted selling my S&W 29 4 in 30 years ago. After watching your charging bear and imagining a real-life scenario like that it makes me wish even harder that I never run into one.
