Shows just how much a simple act of kindness can go a long way. Even though Arthur had unfortunately been a victim of such cruelty in his life, he at least got some recognition and kindness from Gary and it made him feel a bit better about himself. Unfortunately though the negativity in his life was too overwhelming. People talk about how it was cruel of him to jumpscare Gary like that but I genuinely think he did it to distract Gary from looking at a dead body, basically telling him to get the hell out of there as soon as possible.
The part where Gary couldn’t reach the lock was horrible to me. Through no fault of his own, his own disability had the potential to kill him. Thankfully Arthur had patience

If you’ve ever been in a truly intense, life changing and terrifying situation like this, you can understand the fear he’s feeling. Very well acted. Even the kindness that he shows is terrifying as you don’t know if he’s just going to snap again at any moment.
During my youth, I associated with some unsavoury types. Believed that it made me “more of a man” to hang out with individuals older than myself. Had a lot of people who taught me well and some not as well. I had the unfortunate experience of seeing one person fly off the handle. The way it looks it movies, not as cool as it is in person. Plagued with constant anxiety and paranoia to this day. Even though I know he’s long gone. Not entirely the same situation but scarring nonetheless. Situations like that humble you and make you realise the man you are and not the one you’re trying to be.
I've certainly been I situations where I'm fully convinced I'm about to die by someone else's hand from random street thugs to the infamous armed robbery Let me tell you, that is fear like you couldn't even imagine. It feels as though your entire life has collapsed around you, and you're standing over a void ready to swallow you whole I've also been I Arthur's position in this scene, though I've never killed anyone beyond I my imagination. But that alone is both terrifying and bizarrely liberating. To know that through one random act of extreme violence can upend your entire life through something as simple as a decision and a command to the muscles
Not only was Gary the only one who was ever nice to Arthur but Arthur acknowledged that Gary was also heavily bullied too, so he sympathized with Gary a lot.
Arthur is the joker and vice versa…in the second you realize that Arthur killed these people…yes he wanted to blame it on a persona to get away but Arthur and the joker are not separate…in the sequel we see that he has lost his agency…he always had a moral compass and even this kill was moral…in prison people want him to just act like a psycho killer 24/7 but he is still the Arthur with morals. I think people saw what they wanted to see in the first one instead of what was actually there and the second continued the story of what actually happened and not what many fans thought happened leading to a disconnect for those that went in with preconceived notions. I did a review on my channel
I don't know how often this kind of thing happens, but I think it's crazy that there are people who escaped the wrath of someone because they were simply nice to them.

MIGHT is a key word. I met a paranoid schizophrenic on an EMS call. I was kind, understanding, empathetic and damnit…downright cool to him. I didn’t even tell him to back off when he came to my work station to tell me “thank you”, again and again …. & AGAIN. My coworkers began to fear for my safety, but knowing his dx I didn’t want to pis$ him off. He showed up on my porch & asked me to be the MAID OF HONOR @ his wedding! I didn’t know him or his “fiancé” enough to attend the wedding let alone stand up in it. I told him I had to work that day and thanked him for considering me gave him a hug and congratulated him. THEN, he smiled & said the deadly words… Yeah my life is going well for me now. I stopped taking my medicine and I’m doing much better. I called the police after he left. They KNEW me thru EMS & went above & beyond to keep an eye on me. (Watching my house. Parking down the street, etc) Still, even they couldn’t do anything legally until he had threatened or tried to harm me. He then started showing up everywhere I was. He went to my work supervisor eyes wide & anxious. He said I was secretly putting methamphetamines in his urine while he was sleeping so he would fail drug tests. He said I was stalking him and I had this special power to see through his walls and command him to do certain things that he wasn’t responsible for. He said I was trying to kill him secretly. He said he was keeping an eye on me because he would do anything to stop me from killing him if I tried to. Which was still not a threat he was just saying he would defend himself if I tried to murder him. Once again police could do nothing because he hadn’t directly threatened me. They too were fearful if I got a restraining order it would just be a piece of paper that would mean nothing to him. It would infuriate him & THEN he may snap. My fear as well. Long story short he got married and tried to kill his wife on their honeymoon. Beat her head & face in w his bare fists. I’m not sure if she is alive or even a functional adult anymore. He was committed to a state hospital… Not a prison. He belongs in a state hospital for life…not a prison. I don’t know when or if he will ever get out. I don’t know if he is even alive today. I just hope if he ever does get out…he doesn’t remember the girl “that was nice to him.”

This scene was when phoenix secured greatest Joker of all time to me. From the legendary and hysterical line "my mom died I'm celebrating" to the dwarf struggling to reach the lock lmaooo, it was pure gold.
There's reason in all of this. He is not crazed or delusional. He has a solid set of logic. He figures, I'm going to die tonight, I might as well take out this guy I really dislike. But spares Gary because- he's not a crazed maniac. He's a regular person, trying his best to live with the cards he's been dealt. Gary is a decent person, Gary treats people well, he is targeting those he believes have caused his unfair suffering. "My mom died, I'm celebrating" might sound strange to us. But for him, he knows his mother was a terrible person. Would you not celebrate the death of someone who tormented you to the point of developing trauma? When people still have a logic system, you cannot call them crazy. They are within their minds, just under different principles than we are.
I consider this movie a litmus test for people who are capable of understanding the full consequences of parental abuse/neglect of the nature shown in this movie. It's an authentic portrayal of how hard it is to integrate and succeed in society when you have a parent like this and no other support system to show you the truth of things and give you the resources you need.
To me this is one of the most terrifying scenes I have ever seen in the movies. When the little guy realized he could not reach the chain lock I almost died.

Randall is what I like to call a fake friend. He never supports or backs up Arthur in the film. He only PRETENDS to care for him. All he wanted to do in this scene was hear Arthurs side of the story, so that he can go and tell the cops and say that Arthur killed the subway people, and he makes himself look innocent. Everyone is talking about “you were the only one that was ever nice to me” but the part where he randomly jump scares Gary just killed me. Like, there’s no reason for it, let’s just have a little joke. Completely Joker.
2:55 Horrifying moment, both because it takes him a second to clock WHY Gary is scared shitless, but also because there is a sense of him enjoying it: he likes being feared
Nobody ever says anything bad/critical to somebody who lost a just parent. You can get away with murder lol The only people immune are other who lost their parent(s) My dad died unexpectedly. After a week when I returned to work all my friends (with living parents) were really nice, awkward and palpably uncomfortable. Then my friend Fraser (who had lost his mum year back) saw me. He let out a massive shit eating grin, widened his arms in celebration and said loudly: “ Jimmy! Welcome to “The Dead Parents society”” I paused for a second and then laughed harder that I did since he died. It felt so great that he wasn’t treating me differently than he did before my dad died. My advice to others who have a friend that loses a loved one…… Don’t change the way you treat them, it just reminds them how different their life is now.
Talking to people that just lost someone is not easy though. If you talk to them you don't want to say anything that is inappropriate. And I believe this fear is warranted, because people that lost someone are easier irritated because they are experiencing heavy feelings. I think you would agree with me that you don't joke with them for a while because they are just not in the mood. Your friend met you with a joke but I think it worked because it was already a week after the death. If you lost your dad they same day you wouldn't have laughed because you were in a completely different mood. Getting back to normal mode is dance of people trying out small things and seeing how you react. And at some point you are back to "normal". Or maybe you are the one to initiate humor to show that you are ok with it.
I understand what you mean, but when I first read your story and heard that, I was shocked and I thought you would have ended the friendship but you instead found it funny. 🤔
When someone is upset, I normally try to be very friendly and upbeat with them. I feel like that some people do well when you acknowledge their pain, and some people, like me, just want to be reminded of the world's joys, and that there are people who genuinely love and like you.
It is the subtlety of things that make this scene/movie so good. Arthur's face after looking through the peep hole and seeing Randall is pure disgust when he opens the door. Then he sees Gary and smiles and invites them in. It's brief, but exactly why it is so perfectly done especially with the camera moving down and showing Gary from Arthur's viewpoint. He then slowly builds to the fact he's going to kill Randall and marks the wall with the cigarette. And when you're not sure if Arthur will actually let Gary go, that brief moment he recloses the door after unlatching the chain adds so much to the feeling of being trapped and inevitable death for Gary...only to be kissed on the head and released from what everyone felt was certain death.

Shows just how much a simple act of kindness can go a long way. Even though Arthur had unfortunately been a victim of such cruelty in his life, he at least got some recognition and kindness from Gary and it made him feel a bit better about himself. During my youth, I associated with some unsavoury types. Believed that it made me “more of a man” to hang out with individuals older than myself. I refuse to acknowledge the sequel as canon

And arthur case little judgements is just part of Arthur irritation why he hits Randell harder in frustration of how he feels.
The comparison is striking.

A great example is when he accuses him of having a gun, even though Randall was the one who gave him it.

"you were the only one that was nice to me"
- the quiet kid
THIS is HOW you make a JOKER movie…
You can see who Arthur loves in this scene. After he opened the door, he doesn't look too happy seeing Randall's face but when he hears Gary's voice, his face is graced with a smile.
If he loved him he wouldn’t murder someone in front of him and traumatise him for life
Gary holding the bottle was really heartwarming
I love the little detail when Arthur's face is still blank when he sees randall after opening the door but brightens up the second be sees gary
How did the Joker go from this masterpiece to the excrement of Joker: Folie à Deux is just a damn mystery.
There is no second movie. 😅
I still remember that when I watched this in theaters the whole audience went "Awww" when Arthur was kind enough to let Gary go 😂
This movie is a masterpiece in dark humor
“My mom died I’m celebrating “ one of the best lines in this movie
I love how even though Arthur’s “Joker” makeup is halfway done and he’s not wearing his suit yet. He’s still fucking scary as him in this scene.
For some reason, Arthur with his Joker make being halfway done reminds me of how Joker looked in the New Batman Adventures. Minus the black eyes.
this is my favorite scene lowkey
@samsuffit ive known this
It’s mine too
same
"You're the only one that was ever nice to me"
Joker The Merciful
Gary's reaction kills me each time
😂😂😂
Just like Randell
The phrase "I stopped taking my medication, I feel alot better now" is usually the words before a disaster
Don't bully the quiet kid in school, kids.
Arthur was and still is a symbol of what so many people go through in this world
am glad he didn't kill the little dude honestly felt scared for him
And THIS is why I try to be nice to everyone, there's literally no reason to be mean.
Yes, because when you are not nice to anybody, you create devils.
Yup
Not everyone deserves their kindness.
This version of joker has more empathy and remorse than other versions
I agree I think it’s because it’s the beginning of his descent to complete madness. It would be fitting to see him get worse in the sequels.
He literally looks like a demon in this scene. This movie was wonderfully disturbing.
This movie is so good. No other words.
What makes it so good is, JOKER is a 'crazy' but also a so realistic character. Real life vibes.
“You were the only one who was ever nice to me” Felt that 😢😢
Everyone is talking about “you were the only one that was ever nice to me” but the part where he randomly jump scares Gary just killed me.
Like, there’s no reason for it, let’s just have a little joke. Completely Joker.
He pranked him just like what a good friend does.
@@mags6946 trying to provide some stress relief, lol.
I howled the first time I saw that because it was hilarious and scared me too 😂
He did that to get him to leave sooner cause he was still stuck on the dead body
@@BlackDiamond2718 maybe, maybe.
Or maybe he’s developing a weird sense of humor based on frightening others?
2:55
Horrifying moment, both because it takes him a second to clock WHY Gary is scared shitless, but also because there is a sense of him enjoying it: he likes being feared
Jesus... Phoenix is a fucking great actor!
The fact that he closes the door to tell Gary that shows he couldn't let him go before he let him know
I love how Gary had to wipe off his tear and muster up the courage to ask Arthur to open the door.
1:38 I can’t begin to explain how disturbing he looks here
wholesome scene
Gives me faith in humanity
One for the family.
Hahahahahahahaha

Yep
Nobody ever says anything bad/critical to somebody who lost a just parent.
You can get away with murder lol
The only people immune are other who lost their parent(s)
My dad died unexpectedly. After a week when I returned to work all my friends (with living parents) were really nice, awkward and palpably uncomfortable.
Then my friend Fraser (who had lost his mum year back) saw me. He let out a massive shit eating grin, widened his arms in celebration and said loudly:
“ Jimmy! Welcome to “The Dead Parents society””
I paused for a second and then laughed harder that I did since he died. It felt so great that he wasn’t treating me differently than he did before my dad died.
My advice to others who have a friend that loses a loved one……
Don’t change the way you treat them, it just reminds them how different their life is now.
Tampoco hace falta que me cuentes aquí toda tu vida, para eso cómprate 1 diario
Or maybe you are the one to initiate humor to show that you are ok with it.
if someone tells me that I'm throwing hands lmfao
I understand what you mean, but when I first read your story and heard that, I was shocked and I thought you would have ended the friendship but you instead found it funny. 🤔
When someone is upset, I normally try to be very friendly and upbeat with them. I feel like that some people do well when you acknowledge their pain, and some people, like me, just want to be reminded of the world's joys, and that there are people who genuinely love and like you.
I feel so bad for Gary everytime man. He so traumatised and upset. It genuinely makes me so sad 😭😭 He's such a sweet guy 😭😭😭
Notice how he doesn’t start smiling till he sees Gary
