Bale's Patrick Bateman is the greatest role of a narcissistic psychopath in cinema history! Yes, there are other great roles of murderous psychopaths played by great actors, but I'm talking specifically about this combination - a narcissistic psychopath, and what's more, in a satire. A genius is often a person who sees something which the rest of the world doesn't. And Bale was one step ahead of everyone before the filming, later on the set, and after the release of the movie.
    1. Before the movie, others warned Bale that this role is a career suicide, not seeing what he did - that the role is complex, unique, and great to play.
    2. At first, the rest of the cast didn't think Bale is doing it right when they were on the set filming. They didn't understand Bale's brilliant acting until they saw the finished movie, as Josh Lucas admitted recently. Bale knew how to play it on day 1! In one of the interviews, Bale literally described it as an 'acting teacher's nightmare' style - exactly the reaction of the rest of the cast!! Shows you how ahead of everyone he was! It was the performance of the performance. Brilliant because there was nothing 'not planned', instinctive about Bateman. And later on, when the cast watched the finished movie, they admitted how great Christian was!
    3. Then, the m0ronic film critics (the honorable exception was legendary Robert Ebert) were whining about violence and sex, not understanding one thing about this brilliant satire. And Bale understood it all from the start.
This public stupidity at the time, and the indie character of this movie, without any PR machine behind it, was probably a reason why Bale was criminally overlooked by the Oscars. His performance as Bateman is a masterpiece. He effortlessly mixed serious drama, creepiness, craziness, fun, and ridiculousness together!

Bale's maturity & brilliance in this role is not that surprising if you know a little bit about Bale's life. Christian had very unusual parents and upbringing, his family has seen quite a few things. This means that the child has contact with various, exciting people and different environments from the beginning, and can analyze the entire spectrum of human behaviors.
His grandfather was an RAF pilot, and his father, who was born in South Africa, for a time a commercial pilot, then he had his own businesses, then he was also an activist in various fields. The whole family moved around the world and had a nomadic lifestyle. Christian's mother was a circus dancer and clown. Christian grew up in a circus.
Bale almost NEVER talks about it, but he did maybe 2-3 times, including a few years ago, at the time of the Vice movie premiere, on the HappySadConfused movie podcast, and it was fascinating to listen to him talk about his life in a circus. In a circus you have contact with acting all the time, it's all about performance, and you live with interesting people who know life. Acting appears to be Bale's destiny. He simply changed one circus for another, one stage for a larger and more spectacular one - the world of film and Hollywood!!

A couple of thoughts: "The point" isn't whether what happens in the movie is real or not, but that it basically doesn't matter either way. Patrick *could* be a stock broker with an over-active imagination, he could be an actual homicidal maniac, - the end result is basically the same either way: the world he inhabits is so utterly venal; so massively superficial and inhuman that he will never EVER face any consequences whatsoever for what he does, he is so utterly insulated from any repercussions for any of his monstrous actions, that he will never have the catharsis of being truly discovered as the ridiculous monster he actually is. He will never be punished, no matter how deeply he secretly desires it: Because Patrick is basically in hell.

I just realized that Bateman shot the first building security guard because he walked into the wrong building. A factor of both his psychosis and movie's theme of everyone and everything looking the same. Bateman simply got mixed up which building to go into to, realizes its the wrong one, and kills the security guard witness.

Lmfao the way he delicately tries to put the knife and fork down and snags the salt before the detective can look up so it looks like he was salting his food when he was gonna eat it unflavored. Which is highly unusual to the average person one to not season but to mimic the people your with to be more likable is crazier.

Christian Bale played Patrick Bateman so well that before the shooting of the movie, Bale showed up to a lunch with the AUTHOR of the book Bret Easton Ellis AS Patrick Bateman. It creeped out Ellis so much that he had to asked Bale to stop playing Bateman as the character. Imagine playing a character so well that it CREEPED out the AUTHOR of THIS BOOK!
