I can almost forgive it if the "new" implied Joker literally tries to mimic Ledger's performance to a tee. That bit of him laughing seemed to be an attempt to mimic Ledger's laugh at least, and there's a subtle resemblance between the two actors.
Every scene the joker was in was the best scene. You were on edge every time and the single rising musical note just added to the tension no actor could better Heath Ledger's performance
Yeah I mean everytime Joker says something, it gets scary. Why so serious, I believe whatever doesn't kill u simply makes you...stranger, do you wanna know how I got these scars? DUDE, HL IS THE MOST SCARIEST JOKER ON EARTH
I mean, in his first scene - THE FIRST SCENE OF THE MOVIE - he demonstrates just how terrifying he is, because he clearly doesn't care about anything. Any one of those other guys could have decided to kill him before he killed them, the bank manager could have got a lucky shot, his whole plan could have ended before it began. Is he tense? Worried? Focused, even? No, none of those things, he's just going with the flow of events. He greets the world with a mockingly fake cheerfulness, while underneath he's utterly nihilistic. It's not just that the lives of others mean nothing to him, his own life means nothing. He has zero regard for whether he lives, dies, succeeds, or fails, which allows him to go all-in with no fear. This is why his gambit with Dent paid off, he didn't care if Dent blew his brains out, so he made things "fair" and convinced Dent to take on an entirely new view of the world. He doesn't even care if the two ferries rise above their fear of each other, he'll just blow them up anyway. He could do anything, at any time, to anyone. Nothing is sacred, nothing is safe. He does, indeed, just want to watch the world burn, and then he wants to climb onto the fire.
Watching these scenes, I’ve been noting how Ledger alters the pitch of his voice ever so slightly with each line. I think this works with the music to keep the audience always on edge.

The soft childish voice was one of the best aspects of this performance. You can see why the director gave virtually full head on for all his scenes. They knew they had something.
it was filmed brilliantly, would never suspect it was a composite shot and Heath took a shot to the hand to cover the guys face when he 'slammed' it against the table. if you look close as the guy falls back you can see his hand move quickly from the face.

One of the most remarkable things is that Ledger didn't HAVE to be this good. At all. The box office draw was already there, it had stars in the cast, Nolan already had a following, it was going to look and sound amazing no matter what. Then Ledger busts out as a fully-formed icon, one of the best in movie history. And, thankfully, we'll always be able to return to it.

What I love about this Joker is that while he is just as menacing as everyone says, he's also one of the most important things the Joker needs to be, _funny_ The bit where he walks into Harvey's room wearing a nurse outfit and says "Hiiii..." so awkwardly is honestly hilarious
Yes!! Exactly! I love when he’s like Joker: “When you and uhm…” Harvey: “RACHEL!!” Joker: *puts up defense hands* “Rachel….” His magic pencil trick was funny too. Or when they hit his head on the table and he goes “never start off with the head. The victim gets all fuzzy. You can’t feel the next- *BAM* “….see?” I never thought someone so psychotic and scary could also make me legitimately laugh out loud so many times.
Freddy Krüger, Darth Vader/Maul, Hannibal Lecter, the Predator, Hans Gruber, the T-1000, Hans Landa, John Doe, Castor Troy, Loki, Maleficient, Roy Batty, Jack Sparrow and of course Megamind. Also every villain ever played by Charles Dance. There are plenty more of course, especially when you look for movies where the hero is especially bland. For example, do you remember the name Schwarzenegger's character in Running Man? Neither do I but I clearly remember his opponents Dynmo, Buzzsaw and Subzero. And that applies to many stars like Stallone, Willis and so on: They made so many movies and their characters are basically all the same generic buff guys that are good at fighting and that's it.

It’s rare (in my opinion) to see someone like Heath Ledger be able to sinc so well in character like the Joker that you wonder how he did it so convincingly. Even with our discernment in acknowledging of actors playing a role and script, the Joker in this movie is beyond the elements of a criminal. Ledger became the criminal and we forgot he was just an actor playing the role. His expressions, his words and movements were flawless in showing us someone living in darkness.
He legitimately made himself go crazy by locking himself away from the world in a dark hotel room for a month to prepare for this role. The interrogation scene where batman hit and threw the joker around the room and cracked the one-way glass with his head, that was all real, which was at heaths own request - typical aussie.
2:25 when Gambol says "you're crazy", it's the only time during the movie where you can see Joker is genuinely upset. He truly believes that being an agent of chaos is the only way to live, and is downright offended at someone insulting him about his state of mind. Aside from the bounty Gambol placed, this is the reason why Joker "kills" him personally later on. It's subtle, but I really wish that they explored on this more.
@@jdrc1233 I liked Letos Joker to be honest but i feel like they never really let him BE that character if that makes sense. Hopefully with the Snyder Cut coming out and rumors of him being on an HBO MAX series he'll get proper time to shine

The lip licking was done to keep the prosthetics on the sides of his mouths from falling off, he had to keep them wet and moist, but he also implemented it as a mannerism of the character.
@@mancityfan2004It honestly really works in his favor. It draws attention to his mutilated mouth, and it comes across as deranged and off his rocker. A little bit of ingenuity in the face of adversity ended up selling us on the character (along with the stellar performance as a whole).

Yeah I mean everytime Joker says something, it gets scary. Why so serious, I believe whatever doesn't kill u simply makes you...stranger, do you wanna know how I got these scars? DUDE, HL IS THE MOST SCARIEST JOKER ON EARTH
@Sarah Bannister huh
He sucked as joker. Just because he died doesn’t make his joker good
Watching these scenes, I’ve been noting how Ledger alters the pitch of his voice ever so slightly with each line. I think this works with the music to keep the audience always on edge.

One of the most remarkable things is that Ledger didn't HAVE to be this good. At all. Then Ledger busts out as a fully-formed icon, one of the best in movie history. And, thankfully, we'll always be able to return to it.

I can't tell you how many times I've watched this film and come away breathless with Heath Ledger's performance as the Joker. Absolutely mesmerizing!
