It means that as he has watched his own kids grown up and seen them impacted by his own parenting mistakes he has gained compassion for his mother. But being able to show her some forgiveness, compassion and love doesn't mean what she did was okay, that she has changed, or that it would be healthy for her to have access to him or his kids. It is recognition that things will never change and a close relationship isn't possible.

I realized another interesting thing about this song. Eminem says his mother's name, ''Debbie Mathers,'' which he didn't mention in ''Cleanin' Out My Closet.'' I believe the reason why is because he was angry at his mom in 2003, but now he realizes that Debbie Mathers wasn't a bad person, and that he an see past her failures as a mother and look at her as person. He gives her credit for what she did, and why she couldn't do more, but he still says that she did fail as a mother. The point of the song isn't to say that he was wrong back in 2003, it's just an honest apology, where he explains that she didn't deserve to be put through that, and that he took it too far.

This song was written 10 years ago now. This was after his own addictions, rehabilitation, relapse, and then finally sobriety. He healed. He made amends with his own daughters and others. Now fast forward, more growth. At his Rock N Roll Hall of Fame induction back in Nov 2022, his mom sent in a Video tribute that was shown that night, a beautiful message of love and pride. Thinking they’re ok. They are who they are. Blessings. Beautiful song. Great reaction.

She will be 30 this year and they are still working on their relationship. It's getting there though. I just want her to find piece with it. She has struggled with addiction from feeling abandoned. She is 9 months sober today has moved 3000 miles away and is finally finding herself. With the love and support from her dad.

I was constantly kicked out of my house as a teen and permanently kicked out at 17, because I left the house to see my gf and I forgot to tell anyone where I was going (a pretty stupid reason if you ask me). Luckily, I had a few friendly teachers that took the time to hear out my situation. They let me sleep in the classrooms, since we didn’t have any shelters that would take me nearby. Thanks to their generosity, I’m not doing stupid shit, homeless on the streets, and I just recently became the first person in my family to graduate highschool. I achieved this, but it doesn’t even feel like an accomplishment, given the circumstances. The future is like a paralyzing void of uncertainty that I don’t want to step through. All I wanna do is write music all day and chances are, that’s not gonna get me anywhere, or at least, that’s what I’ve been told my whole life. Although a hundred million others share my dreams and that makes me irrelevant, I’ll persist in my schemes for the hell of it. Thx for reading my lil vent. 🙏 💗

If you weren't afraid of what was to come, I would be worried, that fear of uncertainty is what makes us human.
I was the same as a teenager, and spent a few years sleeping in the back of an abandoned car. Most of my teachers and family had written me off, and predicted that I would spend my life in and out of prison.
I got my first job as a cleaner after narrowly avoiding a jail sentence. 15 years later, I've pushed myself to get to where I want to be. I own my house, car, motorbike etc. I'm part of a team in cutting edge Nuclear process work, and have made amends with my family.
People like us don't often get second chances, but when we do get one, grab it with both hands and run with it. It isn't a straight road, there are lots of bends and bumps, but if you keep that drive going you will get to where you want to be.

FIRST OF ALL: Graduating high school is a MASSIVE accomplishment. Dropping out and getting a GED would have been easier. But you CHOSE to stick with it and EARNED your diploma. A lot of people refuse help because they are scared about looking weak. However, by asking for help and accepting it, you proved your STRENGTH. I have no doubt your strength and determination will lead you to more success. You have EARNED those flowers, dont allow others to take them from you.
      💐🌹🌷🌼🥀
I am NOT saying RUclips comment sections are not an appropriate place to vent. We all need to vent, rant and just scream at God or the universe (whatever your personl beliefs are). I am only suggesting a few subreddits you might find helpful:
      • r/AlAnon
      • r/AdultChildren
      • r/rant
I dont know how helpful this link is, but it was the first link that popped up when I searched "How to become a musician" on Google and it seems like it includes a decent summary of options: www.indeed.com/career-advice/career-development/how-to-become-a-muscian
I would personally suggest becoming a teacher. Schools are constantly begging for qualified teachers. Due to the math and poetry involved with writing and preforming your own music, you can incorporate those skills in the classroom, and lead a music program (depending on your location. Music programs tend to be one of the first cuts schools make when there are budget issues). Plus, given your personal experiences teaching would be a great way to help any other kids/teens that might be going through similar situations. 💙💛💜

Somehow the very last part by Nate Reuss is overlooked...but the last little ''I want a new life" hits me so hard. It's so simple, but has so much meaning to me.
My mother died early at 58, and I moved across the country at 18, and only visited 3 times in the 12 odd years I lived away. We weren't estranged, but I didn't really keep up contact like I should have long distance. She never did meet my daughter, again, something else the song touches on somewhat. But I did/do have resentment for her not pushing me in school and having a hands off approach, and us growing up poor, despite my Dad bailing on us (we are estranged), similar to the song. I still remember the night aged 6 I had to drag her home from where my Dad was staying because she was drunk, and she made me some hot milk with some cereal. Vivid memory.
But even with my school doing it's best to even pair me with the 'smart kid' because we both picked out as being particularly gifted before moving into High School...he ultimately went to Oxford University, went far academically and was involved in all sorts of stuff I'd love to get involved in and my head around.
Meanwhile me? Bouncing from job to job. Stable, ish, not on great money and not even remotely challenged in my job, but at 35 with 12 hour shifts, and 50/50 custody of my daughter - we just fell out of love and became friends - I'm stuck.
So ''I want a new life'' just hits me. How different my circumstances now might have been with a different upbringing, I dunno, perhaps that's why it hits so deep.

@@ljmac22 bingo. And I think it's good that I've seen what a lack of parenting can do first hand, or what estranged relationships can do, or what happens when parents simply don't care about their childs schooling, so I basically just have to apply myself in the opposite way and she'll turn out alright.
I suppose I can flip how that line makes me feel in a positive, and she can be my new life. Not living vicariously through her, but making sure she doesn't make the same mistakes I did, or what my parents did, and getting enjoyment myself out of seeing her thrive instead of whatever the fuck happened to me.

My Mom had drug issues & my Dad wasn't in my life, so I deeply related to Eminem a lot with his aggressive songs about his parents since I felt hurt, unwanted & abandoned as well. I didn't really have a good relationship with my Mom & I felt so much regret after she passed for treating her like she was my enemy, it consumed me for years & led me to self-harm & multiple suicide attempts since then (like I felt that the only way I could atone for what I did & said to her was to just die). I remember listening to this song a couple of years after my Mom died & I just broke down crying all alone in my friend's living room while she was still at work. It hit far too close to home & it hurt so much emotionally, I was in shambles for a hour or two.

Eminem almost dying from an overdose could see that his mom was sick addicted to drugs. He cannot relate to her treating him like she did because he could never do that to Hailey, but he understands the addiction and “disease.” I hope as she is now an old woman that he spends time with her. On his death bed he will never say I wish I made more money. He will say I wish I talked to my mom more before she passed away. It doesn’t matter who’s to blame, because to live a life you love, you must forgive everyone. Try to call someone who you once loved and forgive them even if you’re not to blame. It’s an overwhelming feeling, even if they don’t acknowledge the apology, of relief and moving forward with a life you love. If you ever get a chance to take the 3 day course of Landmark Forum it will change your life forever. You’ll be happier than you’ve ever been.

Great reaction Tom! This one always makes me emotional!
I’m so lucky to have had a great childhood with awesome parents - it’s actually come full circle as we now have mum with us in her old age - sadly lost my lovely dad 2 years ago but until then he was with us too.
I feel the same way about my son as you do about your boys too! Family is everything to me!
So the story in the song did actually happen, his mum came to his home one night and he was leaving with Nate (his younger half brother who he removed from the state care system as soon as he could) and Hailie (his middle daughter with Kim) and they stopped the car and talked, Hailie met her grandmother for the first time.
As far as I know though, they are still estranged to this day and haven’t seen each other in years. I think that although he loves his mum, it just brings too much toxicity and pain into his life so he loves her from afar.
However, he is notoriously private about a lot of things so I don’t know if this is still accurate - it’s what he describes in his autobiography though.
If you fancy checking out a track about his dad - ‘Leaving Heaven’ gives you a great idea of how he feels about him! His dad died in 2019 and Em recorded the song after he heard about his passing! (I won’t spoil it but it’s nothing like this track!!! Lol!!!)!
Also just to mention - where you saw the ‘skit’ early in the video - that’s from ‘Without Me’, a really fun track Em did way back when media outlets such as MTV were trying to censor him!
It had various scenes with Em dressed up as different people! So, that scene was actually him dressed up as his mum and references the recent court case his mum had raised against him for defamation/ mental anguish in his song lyrics.
(He also dresses up as Elvis, a Sumo wrestler, Osama Bin Laden, Moby, a reality show contestant and probs a few more I’ve forgotten in that video! But the main ‘character’ in the song is Em as ‘Rap Boy’, Dr Dre’s sidekick when they parody Batman and Robin! It’s hilarious!!!)
The rapping cadence and rhyme schemes are ridiculously good in it!!!

Thank you for reacting to this early. When I first watched the Headlights MV, I cried so much. I was so pleased to see Eminem's growth. I really related to it. He's a really cool dude. I LIVE for his bond with 50 cent too. They have such a lovely friendship. It warms my heart. (Dr.Dre too. lol)

I'm so happy you did this one! However, I'm sad because this video is not the full version and all the reaction channels use this because it's the official video.. there are a few more beautiful lines that Nate sang, I wish they would've left them in the video. Here they are:
Maybe we took this too far
I want a new life (Start over)
One without a cause (Clean slate)
So I'm coming home tonight (Yeah)
Well, no matter what the cost
And if the plane goes down
Or if the crew can't wake me up
Well, just know that I'm alright
I was not afraid to die
Oh, even if there's songs to sing
Well, my children will carry me
    Just know that I'm alright
I was not afraid to die
Because I put my faith in my little girls
So I'll never say goodbye cruel world
    Just know that I'm alright
I am not afraid to die
I guess we are who we are
Headlights shining in the dark night, I drive on
Maybe we took this too far
    I want a new life

Another two songs that go together even more than Cleaning Out My Closet and Headlights is Castle and Arose. They go together so much that the end of Arose goes back to the same beat as Castle. Two excellent songs and I don't want to spoil anything but should be great for you to listen to both. back to back. I don't believe there are videos to either as they were major singles but here are links to each. Pay attention to the ending of both songs and listen to the very end.

This song really hits close to home for me. The experience during my early childhood was like this in a lot of ways. Foster care and all. My mother and I are still estranged for the most part and now she’s dying from stage 4 lung cancer. It breaks my heart to know we’re not as close as we once was and to know now that it will never be. 😢

As a child of addicts who struggled with my own addiction for years, this song always gets me. The anger in earlier years turning to healing and understanding. I am a drug and alcohol abuse counselor now, and have my own understanding that my dad struggled with his own addictions. I’m not angry anymore, and want him to overcome as I have. That love from afar feeling.

Eminem said mom it wasn’t your fault because you were sick because he went through it to the point where he almost died in 2007 going through addiction that’s a family problem that passes down is a curse but it’s also a gift might sound weird but if he didn’t go through drug addiction, he would’ve never knew What it felt like to understand what his mom was dealing with Ems older music brings so much emotions out of me every time because like millions of families I had the same family problem out through my 20s I was addicted to almost every drug out there i’ve been clean for three years and now me and my mom are as close as ever so sometimes you have to go through hell to really understand but that doesn’t excuse all the hurt

There were a lot of parts of this song that hit me in the feels, I have a good relationship but it wasn’t always a smooth journey. My dad wasn’t in my life much until I was 16 and my mom didn’t want anything to do with my little brother’s father so I had to grow up quickly and help pick up the slack and be her rock during the hard times. She was and still is an amazing mother but she was at whits end trying to deal with everything life was throwing at her. She had 3 kids, had to go back to school to get a better education to make a better life for us, family drama, and CPS being called on her by someone family members out of spite. It wasn’t until I got older that I truly thought about it and was grateful for everything she did for us.

I've listened to many reactions to this song. Many great, unique, heartfelt and empathized by personal interpretation. I appreciate the your point of view that is not only thoughtful but rational in a way many can take the authenticity from this and parallel it upon oneself. I dig your approach. Your approach, The Matthews Fan and Knox Hill's are my faves. All 3 perspectives are the most relative to me for different and genuine purposes. To me he's not only inspirational because of habits and vices he kicked, but despite the hand dealt over time he continues to evolve. He's not only a top notch father to his own daughter but his Ex's girls as well. Though things still aren't perfect with every female or family he's spoke of he shows a never say never spirit in how he's metamorphed. Can't help but feel if not for his self destructive behaviors and introspect and wisdom that followed he would be far from who is today. He grew up before our very eyes. Music aside, he's an interesting dude
