Good to see another brotha out here experiencing the outdoors. Im all about shooting, archery and hunting as well. Lived in Chicago but currently in the pacific northwest
Welcome to the archery community!! It’s a great bunch of people!! Keep posting videos and keeping us updated on your progress. It will be great to see you grow in our sport!!
You got the bug BAD! 😂 I'm about a year ahead of you...started my addiction last year. I hunted a lot this season, but didn't get a deer. What I did get is an absolute addiction to being in the woods hunting. Already itching for the upcoming season! Keep at it bro!
Looks like you have a great area to practice for sure. I turn 60 in May and have been flinging arrows and shooting deer for 35 years now. My first time hunting with a bow I shot and missed two deer and was determined! I finally killed my first bow deer my 4th season and haven't looked back. 2023 season I arrowed a decent 8 pt. my first sit of the season. I just got a new bow by Bowtech a couple weeks ago and I am loving it. Cool video sir, best of luck to you on your new journey. You'll experience things in the deer woods you can't even imagine, trust me on that one. God bless you brother 🦌🤺
Best thing is acquire newer accessories over time. New stabilizer, sight, release, arrows. Definitely invest in a range finder and get your own set of Allen wrenches so you can tinker with your setup
That and get your bow tuned before hunting season. Have your broadhead picked out well beforehand. Just bc you’re shooting well with practice tips does not mean broadheads will fly the same way! I learned that the hard way this season, I’m new as well bro
@@whatisarchery for sure bro. You should invest in a morrell target as well. One of those big bullseye ones, I’ve got one in my garage. I probably shot a good 500 arrows and it barely looks like I shot it. $200 last you for a long time
The most important thing would be to get a decent drop-away rest. A biscuit works but the longer the arrow sits on the rest the more opportunities for torquing, especially for a new shooter. A new release and stabilizer will help too but a sight can wait
Welcome to the sport my friend. Be careful shooting in your yard. Looks like if you miss that target in front of the tree your neighbors house might get hit lol. I missed my back stop last year and hit the neighbors fence. No harm done but makes you think. Best of luck on your journey. Im 53 and been shooting since I was 8
Congratz. Like others have said don’t pull your bow back without an arrow otherwise you risk dry firing your bow. Glad you found a bow tech you like. Search your area and find an archery shop. Bass pro is fine but you’re dependent on if they have a good tech working.

Not sure how I came across this video, but glad it popped up into my algorithm. I’ve been doing archery for 10 years now, and it’s such a huge part of my life. I remember starting out like you, I even had a similar bear compound that I used for years! Love the video man, love to see new people getting interested in archery. You got the bug! Everyone in here that hunts archery will tell you, it only gets more and more addicting. Just wait until hunting season. Congrats man, I subscribed and I’m pumped to see your journey.
Hello, little bro. I just now came across your channel. I agree with you, that there are not enough Black people in this sport. Let me say Welcome to archery, and I am very excited for your new adventure. Archery for me is not so much hunting, as it is therapy. Keep learning as much as you can, ask questions, practice often, and you will become a very good shot if you persevere. Good luck and don't' get frustrated with yourself.
Welcome to archery and NC. It’s plenty (black archers) out here lol. luckily for you here in North Carolina we have one of the best pro shops on the east coast(First flight archery) and it’s plenty of us around you to coach you to greatness
I love everything about this video. This is a great journey to start and i will be sure to keep checking in on yours while i continue on mine. I really appreciate your honesty and humility about being new and learning. It’s all about learning and improving, that never stops!
@whatisarchery Can't wait. Hopefully, it will get more people involved in archery, no matter who they are. It really is an accessible sport for everyone. I love watching the Lancaster archery classic because you see all types of people young, old, pros, novices, and every type of human competing against each other. Keep it up. You got something here.

Welcome to the sport E, I started my journey in archery at a camp 34 years ago and I still shoot every day. One tip from your video is I saw you draw the bow back without an arrow when you were demonstrating your release, if you accidentally hit the trigger or the loop breaks like on your bow from the 80s, it will dry fire it and likely damage or destroy your bow. Can’t wait to follow you along on your journey, best of luck
Welcome to the journey!!! Keep up the great work and videos! You’ll find your days aren’t complete unless you get some shooting in, very addictive lol! Can’t wait to see how you progress! Just remember to keep having fun and don’t take it too seriously, keep it fun!!!
It's awesome isn't it? I Hunt Deer and Turkey in Ohio now. It's very relaxing to practice and thrilling to go on the hunt. Practice is very key even on days you just don't feel like it. You wanna work on your posture, light cardio and upper body strength around the shoulder too to make the best shots you can. Not too many brotha's out there discovering the joys of Archery either so I wish your Journey a successful one. I'm trying to make a Target backstop now so I won't lose any arrows, they get expensive to replace. 👍
Great progress in a relatively short time. Great approach in realizing that it is a process. Best of luck going forward! You could just get a gun if you wanted to get a deer, but you chose to do it the hard way. Kudos to you!!! Have fun with it, be patient and it can reward you for a lifetime.
Its an addiction. I got into it and now have a number of bows for different applications. 3d, indoor , and hunting. Enjoy it! Welcome to your new addiction.
Hey welcome to the community, glad you enjoy it. Keep watching and learning, and keep documenting your journey. You got this. It's fun relaxing and just fun......
Glad i came across this channel. Im 52 and decided bow hunt after just getting into rifle hunting about 5yrs ago. Im struggling with age and bow strength due to 2 major shoulder injuries. Bought a used hoyt defiant got it set up at 50lbs and it seems aggressive at the break. So ive been looking for a bow that is smooth but has a decent adjustment. Practicing each day
Just stumbled across your channel.. I think it's a great idea you have, documenting your process as a beginner. Im reminded of how I started years ago.. I almost thought I couldnt bowhunt bc I couldnt pull back my cousin's bow (was a high school girl and this bow was >60 lbs.. good thing I didnt buy it anyway as it was older and not set up for me) luckily I went to an archery shop and found a bow I could shoot and hunt with
My oldest daughter started her archery journey this year with her school. They have a NASP. This monday i brought my 9 year old her own bow. Getting her ready to join the school team also. Definitely fun, destress and challenging. I was also from NY. We definitely didn't have anything like this in the city.
Welcome! Keep it up! You’re doing great😊. You’ll find whether you shoot just to shoot or go hunting. It’s fun, challenging and very relaxing all in one😊
I'm subscribing to watch the growth. Been shooting for over 12 years and I still love it like the day I started. Just wait till you get your first deer with it it's over after that!
Great stuff man and welcome to archery. The hunting and archery industries can get overwhelming with all the new tech rolling out every year. Id say just keep it simple, find what works best for you, and enjoy it. Also, you've got a perfect backyard for a few 3D targets.... Keep slingin!!!
Welcome to the addiction man. My family has been into it for years and I just got into it myself in February of last year. Now I am shooting different local and national and regional shoots.
So just a rule of thumb. Never draw your bow back without an arrow nocked, just incase your release breaks you won't dry fire your bow. But I'm a man of color too. Keep up the good work bro!
I’m new to archery too. I am at my 7 months journey with the sport and love it. I can honestly say that I am deep into the rabbit holes. My take away from my journey is to take every criticism from those who have been in the game for a very long time. Keep practicing man.
Good luck on your journey my man. There are lots of resources online and here on RUclips to answer any questions you might have. My first bow was a bear similar to yours that I bought for like $150. I shot it and hunted with it for years and killed a few deer. There is nothing wrong with starting with inexpensive gear. I hope to see more videos over the summer and some hunting videos this fall. Respect from Virginia
not a lot of people that do this sport look like me, lol maybe true but I'll bet you will not find anyone in the community who wouldn't welcome you in. Good luck with the journey, at 59 I bought my first bow last year and have been addicted ever since. Find a good bow shop they will be a wealth of information. Good luck in your journey. Never stop learning. And its not how much you spend, its finding what works best for you, and mastering it.
hey man! so glad to see you wanting to learn a new sport! i started just like you about 2 years ago, i ended up falling in love with it, enough to get a job as a bow tech for the last 2 years. if you ever need help or have any questions id be more than happy to answer anything you need to know. i can answer questions if you need to diagnose any issues you may be experiencing, sometimes a bows tune can be the issue and not so much yourself. i can also answer any questions on sighting or even tying your own D-Loops and peeps. there is also a lot of safety concerns. like never draw your bow back without an arrow it, they aren't designed to be dry fired like that. the arrow needs to help absorb the energy produced by the cams and limbs. if the arrow isn't there, your limbs could crack or even shatter, your cams as well, crack or fold/tare over. the repair costs would be more than that of the value of the bow. so NEVER draw it without an arrow for any reason. not to mention the damage it could do to you in the process. also, at 60# your bow is lethal and should be treated as such. even with a field point, a well placed, or even misplaced shot could seriously injure or kill. most states require a min of 35-40lbs for large game such as deer/elk for reference. always be aware of what is beyond your target. i see a chain link fence, no animals but still. id pick something with a back drop. also.... cardboard man? what is behind it? you said you wanted to shoot on a budget, if you're shooting into wood or something else that dense you're going to be flying through arrows. that carbon doesn't last for ever, i would be flex testing them arrows every time before i shot em again. the cheapest arrows we sold were 7.99 EA. so that can get pricey quick. also, just incase your guy Cabela's guy didn't tell you. make sure you are shooting the correct SPINE on your arrows for your draw length and weight. if you're 29"+ draw length at 60+lbs (assuming you'll go to 70 one day) you're going to possibly need a stiff ass arrow. like 300-250 spine. (lower spine number means stiffer arrow, less flex. higher means softer, more flex) so be careful of what you buy online, make sure they are rated for the draw weight. I've seen customers bring me in 500 spine arrows wanting to shoot 70lbs and 30 inches of draw. they don't read or just don't know to read, and unless you want to pick carbon shards out of your arm you can buy some rubber horse mat cheap from feed or farm stores. large enough sections of it that you could make a rubber back drop to save some of your arrows lifespans. and for a safer back drop behind your target, you wont shoot through those even in the slightest, id get a machine packed hay bale, place a sheet of horse mat behind it, and that arrow will basically bounce off the mat and stay in the hay bail, super easy to pull out this way too. so less likely to loose field points. anyways good luck buddy! i hope you have an amazing archery journey.
Wow, thank you so much you seriously answered a lot of the questions I have had. I will definitely be taking in everything you said…I have been watching hours of videos and have not heard some of the things you sent me. Thank you again I really appreciate it.
@whatisarchery any time brother! I hope you get the chance to have a successful hunt in the future! I didn't go over sighting but the short and sweet is "Chase the arrow" always aim for center when sighting, don't pin gap off, or aim off target to hit where you want. The arrow is telling you where to move the sight. Start at 20 yards and use your top pin. If you miss high and left that means you need to move the sight housing up and to the left. Do this till you hit center. Now, your sight housing is zeroed to your top pin. You not longer need to move the housing, each pin after will be just an up or down adjustment, moving the pin only. If your housing gets maxed out in any direction left or right, could mean bad tune or rest is in the wrong position. If you max out up or dowb then it could be rest position or peep or even bad tune/timing. If you ever see weird flight in the arrow in the first 20-30 yards like the tail of the arrow kick in one direction. Means either bad tune/timing or rest position. This could happen by wind too though if you're shooting outside, so you'll know better in a control environment like an indoor range. I'd find a local one and shoot there from time to time. Good way to make other Archery friends and ask people questions or for tips. I've never met anyone that wasn't helpful on my journey! Good luck again!
Awesome video bro, I remember growing up and we would do archery as well, I'm 24 now and realized I can literally do anything I want so Ima start getting into it too! Ur the man, keep posting. I'm from NY too bro
Also your arrows should be cut down to your draw length that will help with accuracy. Also before hunting season get your broadheads tuned to your field points. The blades on the broadhead will make the arrow fly differently than it would with field points.
I'm in NYC, when I go to the archery range, I'm the only one of color there lol. My advice is to go to a pro archery store, and they will fit you to a bow. I shoot a BowTech ss34. Bear is a great bow company. Welcome to archery it's fun.
Please use broadheads when deer hunting squirrels u can use field points I use field points squirrel when hunting I use G5 dead meat mechanical broadheads but what ur shooting I would recommend g5 fixed blades any of those would work keep it at 100 grains I use 125 but I’m shooting 75lbs at deer and stuff like that I’m new to hunting with bows but I’m been doing it for 5 years last two deer seasons I’ve been hunting them.
Welcome to the sport man and good luck! You’re off to a great start with your new bow. I’d recommend not pulling your bow back without an arrow in it because if you accidentally release the sting you can seriously damage your bow
Yo my man! What part of North Carolina you in? I’m in the western part of the state. Been shooting bows all my life. Just getting into trying to video things. Would be awesome to meet up! Would love to show you some things and get you shooting some 3D targets before season gets here!

BIG no no... google dryfiring your bow... you will blow it up. my son just did it and its costing me 200 bucks to fix his bow. always pull your bow back with an arrow in it. and google derailing your compound bow. also google waxing your strings... i did it all on my own... bow shops kinda help, but not really. the people you meet there will help more. good luck on your journey. subbed, you might make me get a vid up. not alot of us into this like you said.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions I can help you with.
@@whatisarchery I would tell ya also go watch some of arrows up RUclips as well, one other thing that will help you as a hunter is to find a local 3d target shoot, it will teach you how to aim and shoot at a replica of a real animal, also if you want to practice and get really good get you some small game heads and try to go shoot some squirrels on the ground not in the tree so you can find your arrows, but they will teach you hunting and you will have multiple opportunities every time you go out, as well as they are great practice on how to gut clean and cook your kill, PS go find some public land and sit in one spot and you will have more opportunities than walking around. I’ve been hunting and doing archery for 30years idk everything I learn more and more everyday.
The bow needs to be re tuned to you. You are to far back. Definitely get the kisser. Put the tip of your nose on the string. Your peep hole should be lined up with your sight perfectly. I do not know it all. But I see you need more adjustment. This is my first year bow hunting. And deer hunting. I’ll tag along for your journey 🤙🏼
Thank you I appreciate that…my bow is set at 28 and half right now..you thinking I should go to 28..also my dloop looks a bit worn idk if that has anything to do with it
Search measuring draw length. Two different ways will get you close. Get a kisser button. Don't worry about your nose touching the string. Our facial features may not allow for that. ✌️
😂 those arent bows, those are arrows. Just pokin, but learning the terminology asap will help you understand what people are talking about. Be careful, it's a slippery slope. I started when I was a kid, but right now i have 5 bows, and a bow shop in my garage. Lol. Good luck, and have fun man. 👍

Great stuff man and welcome to archery. The hunting and archery industries can get overwhelming with all the new tech rolling out every year. Id say just keep it simple, find what works best for you, and enjoy it. Also, you've got a perfect backyard for a few 3D targets.... Keep slingin!!!
thank you i appreciate that...i noticed how advanced it can get im staying content with what i got for now
Keep grinding, man! 💪 archery is the best! Love it
Most def…thank you
Welcome to the addiction man. My family has been into it for years and I just got into it myself in February of last year. Now I am shooting different local and national and regional shoots.
thank you, i can see myself going down the rabbit hole of archery for sure
So just a rule of thumb. Never draw your bow back without an arrow nocked, just incase your release breaks you won't dry fire your bow. But I'm a man of color too. Keep up the good work bro!
thanks for the heads up im learning not to do that, lets get it bro
I’m new to archery too. I am at my 7 months journey with the sport and love it. I can honestly say that I am deep into the rabbit holes. My take away from my journey is to take every criticism from those who have been in the game for a very long time. Keep practicing man.
thats awesome, im def here for the journey and learning as much as i can
@@whatisarchery I’m looking forward to my very first hunt this spring and fall. Enjoy the process man.
Respect from Virginia
thank you i appreciate that, it can be intimidating looking at all the expensive stuff but im content with where im starting.
Keep it up buddy !! , looks like you haven a lot fun, a lot of people are going to benefit from your videos ,I had to subscribed Good Luck
@@dangaona7045 man I appreciate it thank you….its been a really fun journey and I’m learning so much more than I thought I would

i appreciate that thank you
Just jumped into this addiction myself. Excited to see your journey along this path to a steady bullseye!!
thank you, yea this thing def is addicting lol
not a lot of people that do this sport look like me, lol maybe true but I'll bet you will not find anyone in the community who wouldn't welcome you in. Good luck with the journey, at 59 I bought my first bow last year and have been addicted ever since. Find a good bow shop they will be a wealth of information. Good luck in your journey. Never stop learning. And its not how much you spend, its finding what works best for you, and mastering it.
thank you for this, the community has def welcomed me with open arms..i learning every chance i get
Hey, bro, keep going, Good luck on your hunt.
Thank you I appreciate that
Awesome to see you venture down this rabbit hole with the rest of us.. Enjoy the ride!
thank you, its def a rabbit hole and im all the way stuck lol
Awesome! Keep practicing learn to embrace that pin floating on target then slowly squeeze the shot off, should surprise you.
thank you i really appreciate that, im learning to embrace that part of it
It's a life journey dude. Don't ever stop. The better you get the funner it gets. You pulled that 70 lbs like a G. You should put that up to 70.
I’m def hooked I can’t stop now lol, I was thinking about putting it at 70 I might once I get more consistent with my shot placement
Welcome to the space my friend ✊
Thank you I appreciate that
Great video and thanks for sharing the start of your journey. Archery is a blast. definitely look into local shoots and TAC (total archery challenge).
thank you i appreciate that, i will def look into that
I was you last year when I got my first compound bow. Great video and look forward to the journey.
thank you i appreciate it, def a journey
Glad to see other ethnicities getting into archery I'm new to it also looking to hunt eventually
for sure, its really a great sport
Subbed. Keep posting.
i appreciate that, videos coming every week
Welcome to the sport sir. Good to see your content come across my suggestions. New sub here. Good looking rig too sir.
Thank you I appreciate it..taking it one step at a time
This is awesome, love the vid. Got my first bow this year and also hoping to hunt at some point.
lets go, we just have to keep learning and growing as much as possible
Awesome! Just getting started too.
lets goooo
hey man! so glad to see you wanting to learn a new sport! i started just like you about 2 years ago, i ended up falling in love with it, enough to get a job as a bow tech for the last 2 years. if you ever need help or have any questions id be more than happy to answer anything you need to know. i can answer questions if you need to diagnose any issues you may be experiencing, sometimes a bows tune can be the issue and not so much yourself. i can also answer any questions on sighting or even tying your own D-Loops and peeps.
there is also a lot of safety concerns. like never draw your bow back without an arrow it, they aren't designed to be dry fired like that. the arrow needs to help absorb the energy produced by the cams and limbs. if the arrow isn't there, your limbs could crack or even shatter, your cams as well, crack or fold/tare over. the repair costs would be more than that of the value of the bow. so NEVER draw it without an arrow for any reason. not to mention the damage it could do to you in the process.
also, at 60# your bow is lethal and should be treated as such. even with a field point, a well placed, or even misplaced shot could seriously injure or kill. most states require a min of 35-40lbs for large game such as deer/elk for reference. always be aware of what is beyond your target. i see a chain link fence, no animals but still. id pick something with a back drop.
also.... cardboard man? what is behind it? you said you wanted to shoot on a budget, if you're shooting into wood or something else that dense you're going to be flying through arrows. that carbon doesn't last for ever, i would be flex testing them arrows every time before i shot em again. the cheapest arrows we sold were 7.99 EA. so that can get pricey quick.
also, just incase your guy Cabela's guy didn't tell you. make sure you are shooting the correct SPINE on your arrows for your draw length and weight. if you're 29"+ draw length at 60+lbs (assuming you'll go to 70 one day) you're going to possibly need a stiff ass arrow. like 300-250 spine. (lower spine number means stiffer arrow, less flex. higher means softer, more flex) so be careful of what you buy online, make sure they are rated for the draw weight. I've seen customers bring me in 500 spine arrows wanting to shoot 70lbs and 30 inches of draw. they don't read or just don't know to read, and unless you want to pick carbon shards out of your arm
you can buy some rubber horse mat cheap from feed or farm stores. large enough sections of it that you could make a rubber back drop to save some of your arrows lifespans. and for a safer back drop behind your target, you wont shoot through those even in the slightest, id get a machine packed hay bale, place a sheet of horse mat behind it, and that arrow will basically bounce off the mat and stay in the hay bail, super easy to pull out this way too. so less likely to loose field points.
anyways good luck buddy! i hope you have an amazing archery journey.
@@TheRogue-Rivian thank you for that I just recently sighted in my bow a couple days ago and did exactly what your talking about💪🏾
Great video let’s get into it
Thank you man
Awesome video bro, I remember growing up and we would do archery as well, I'm 24 now and realized I can literally do anything I want so Ima start getting into it too! Ur the man, keep posting. I'm from NY too bro
thats great man, come join the journey, lets get it
Good luck with your archery journey
thank you i appreciate that
Welcome to the sport.
Gotta start some way 👍🎯❤️🇺🇸
That’s a fact
Also your arrows should be cut down to your draw length that will help with accuracy. Also before hunting season get your broadheads tuned to your field points. The blades on the broadhead will make the arrow fly differently than it would with field points.
Oh wow thanks for that I had no idea that arrows are specific to draw lengths…I appreciate that
@@whatisarchery no worries I started my archery journey back in may of last year so I’m very new to it as well.
I'm in NYC, when I go to the archery range, I'm the only one of color there lol. My advice is to go to a pro archery store, and they will fit you to a bow. I shoot a BowTech ss34. Bear is a great bow company. Welcome to archery it's fun.
That’s wassup I never even thought to look for an archery range in ny never a thought…glad you doing your thing too

Let’s go💪🏾

Please use broadheads when deer hunting squirrels u can use field points I use field points squirrel when hunting I use G5 dead meat mechanical broadheads but what ur shooting I would recommend g5 fixed blades any of those would work keep it at 100 grains I use 125 but I’m shooting 75lbs at deer and stuff like that I’m new to hunting with bows but I’m been doing it for 5 years last two deer seasons I’ve been hunting them.
thank you i really appreciate the info, it really helps
@@whatisarchery ya no problem I try to help people out when starting archery
You going love it bruh
I’m hooked already lol
Welcome to the sport man and good luck! You’re off to a great start with your new bow. I’d recommend not pulling your bow back without an arrow in it because if you accidentally release the sting you can seriously damage your bow
Thank you…I just recently learned about pulling the bow without an arrow…thanks for the heads up
If your d loop breaks, it will do it too. Don't want that.
Hell yeah brother.

I'll be interested to follow you man. It'll be cool to see someone start from the very begining. I'm no expert but ive been shooting for a while.hit me up if you got questions

You and me are the same, you are where i was about 14 years ago. Queens, NY. BIG no no... google dryfiring your bow... you will blow it up. my son just did it and its costing me 200 bucks to fix his bow. always pull your bow back with an arrow in it. and google derailing your compound bow. also google waxing your strings... i did it all on my own... bow shops kinda help, but not really. the people you meet there will help more. good luck on your journey. subbed, you might make me get a vid up. not alot of us into this like you said.
thank you man i really appreciate that, Ny all day...i just learned about dry fire im def staying away from that

Also look up Nock On Archery School of Nock, it’s a course you can take for free on RUclips you can learn from a professional archer John Dudley
I actually started watching that yesterday…thanks for looking out I appreciate it
@@whatisarchery I would tell ya also go watch some of arrows up RUclips as well, one other thing that will help you as a hunter is to find a local 3d target shoot, it will teach you how to aim and shoot at a replica of a real animal, also if you want to practice and get really good get you some small game heads and try to go shoot some squirrels on the ground not in the tree so you can find your arrows, but they will teach you hunting and you will have multiple opportunities every time you go out, as well as they are great practice on how to gut clean and cook your kill, PS go find some public land and sit in one spot and you will have more opportunities than walking around.
