Sean! Thank you for this! I have been following and learning from your and your team for many years!
Big hug for your and your team!
For all creators here, I know it can be frustrating and overwellming at the begining (and later too) not only for the creative power pushing us to share, but also for the limitations on cash, content ideas, and ALL THE NEW SKILLS WE NEED TO LEARN etc. I started "seriously" my content creation just one year ago using 99% my cellphone and a clip mic, and sometimes a second old cellphone my wife won't use any more. Now I am in a stage of NEW CHANNELS, new content and ready for the next level of creation. It takes time. Be patience.
The most important thing now is to create positive content aligned with your passions. This is the real trend and what we need to create more.
    Use what you have!
and improve on the way :)

30 million views on YT in the first year from a IPhone 12 Pro Max and a Canon M50 (and not even the mark II)
IMO spend money on the lighting and mic vs the camera year 1
Now I am shopping for a 4k camera full frame as I am making money off YT, and I am not going to spend stupid money as that would be dumb.
    Grow as you make money.

@@ThinkMediaTV Still making my way through the video because it is long... lol. I seen the Chase Jarvis line part. I remember when he said that. But yes, I started doing RUclips and the phone was my best friend. I have a DSLR but it was so much easier to just buy a plug-in mic, a phone bracket (for the tripod I have), and start recording. Truth is cell phone mics are not half bad to begin with if you do not have an external mic. But you also now get varying camera options on modern phones so you can go normal, wide, tele in the middle of the video shoot. You can even pause (I hear this is an android thing) and adjust your scene and press continue and keep recording (I use this a lot). It is just so easy. I will eventually take my time to test out the DSLR but for now I just upgraded my phone (from a S10 to S23 Ultra) for better low light and quality. I also purchased little hand size lights that fit on mini table tripods for extra light (to battle the smaller sensor issue compared to DSLRs). So it all works and is easy.

I would love to see a video by someone that talks about buying USED equipment for streaming - so there are cameras you can buy used that are way cheaper than buying a new low end camera. Anything to avoid a "webcam".

Just started a youtube channel, using old gear I had. Nikon D500 with 30mm f1.4 and Canon 200D MK i with 24mm f2.8.
Currently have Sony A7s IV penciled in for when I can afford it after it comes out. With limited space, full frame makes more sense and being able to record in 4k provides the option to crop in on videos or downscale for sharper quality. Backup plan is a Canon R8 or just the Sony A7s III.

Sean I noticed you mentioned the Canon R50 had very limited use of lenses, which is only partially true. With an adapter (Canon’s at $99) all the Canon EF lenses become available for this camera too. I use my adapter and the EF 10-18mm for my vlogging and the results have been awesome. Also, the Canon RF 16mm isn’t the only option for use on still video. For that I use my Canon 24mm mostly but have used my Canon RF 18-150 as well. There are plenty of different ways to do this and there’s no doubt the possibilities will grow in the future. No one should be afraid to go with Canon but I do favor starting with the R10.

Thanks for the great information. I got started almost 3 years ago with a Camcorder (Canon VIXIA HF R800) and I do not regret my decision. $300 for the camcorder w/ memory card, and another $300 for basic mics, softbox lights, and a few other items got me started. A camera is on my future purchase list, but for a hobby channel making $40 per month, $2K for a camera and lens is hard to justify. I still would not put "video quality" in my top 5 areas I want to fix to grow my channel.

Many years ago, I had a panasonic lumix _waterproof_ camera. It had a *super past full off to taking the 1st shot time,* I left burst mode enabled, and it fit easily in most pockets. It was great. I'd take it hiking, rafting, bouldering, you name it. It did the *take anywhere / always ready* so well.
My aunt had the non-waterproof version that instead was able to mount lenses. Each has their purpose, but I felt like I had much more use/utility than she got out of hers.
I've missed that camera ever since it got stolen. I've been considering buying something like that again.

In this case, I film recipes, with me appearing in the video at times. To have this blurry background effect in the case of recipe videos, which camera do you think is best? My budget isn't the best because everything is very expensive in Brazil, I could at most go up to the Canon R50.

I'm a beginner. I need a camera I can easily move around my house and that has a good mic or that can have a mic plugged in. I'd like to be able to plug the camera in while filming. Sometimes I'd be filming in the basement. I don't know if I need 4k since I'm just planning to talk about books. I'd like a lot of storage capacity. My main hesitation on using my phone is limited storage capacity.

    • @FallacyAsPraxis
      @FallacyAsPraxis 10 месяцев назад

Stick to 1080p. People look better in 1080.
4k is mostly hype. The file sizes are HUGE, trickier to record, and take longer to edit and upload. Most people don't have 4k monitors or don't really care. If you are a beginner, you don't need any fancy or expensive stuff. Use your phone and a decent budget lighting setup. You don't need large storage capacity on the phone. Write your script and record it in pieces, then download each segment to your computer and delete from the phone and record the next one. You splice them together for a long-form video during editing.

The best thing about the zve-10 aside from its jack of all trades abilities, is its super compact size. Makes it a no brainer to take any and everywhere. And the kit lens isnt horrible btw. Especially for only a hundred bucks? It gives you the essential focal ranges you need. And the af is snappy and you can affect the speed of the zoom if you want a cinematic looking zoom in video

I think the most important point that spoke directly to me, just starting out and thinking about my first attempt at creating content, is that I need to think closely about the non-negotiables. I'll be making technical content within a controlled environment. But I need to be able to go from shots covering (roughly) a drafting table viewpoint down to visualizing tiny microelectronics circuitry. My tentative take-away is that the lens is the starting point for me -- likely a macro-zoom such as the Sony FE 70-200mm F4 Macro G OSS II and let things fall out from there. It would be nice to rent one before buying. (I doubt that's happening.) Anyway, thanks. Regardless of your own choices, what all this time taken to make this video have given me is myriad questions to ask myself and also a lot of different technologies and their variations. It's just what I needed at this time, I think. Thanks!

I have a question regrading lighting and cameras.
Currently I record with a Logitech Brio webcam in 1080p, 30 FPS (not high def). For my lighting I have two SpectroLED SP-E-3600 Essential 360 Daylight LED light panels (no backlight and I record in front of a gray painted wall). The lights produce 5600 degree K Light. I think the lighting is decent, but it doesn't compare with the quality of the Think Media videos.
I'm thinking about upgrading my camera to a mirrorless camera and I have a couple questions.
    1. Is it recommended to continue using my LED light panels are my point and fill lights? I've had them for about 13 years and they seem to work good.
    2. If I did upgrade my camera to say a Sony FX30 would my current lighting be acceptable or should I swap that out too?
    3. I sit at my desk to make videos so what lenses would be recommended to work with an FX30?
    Thanks in advance.

I'm between the Sony ZV-E10 and the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 for indoor talking head videos for RUclips.
I know that the DJI is originally for street vlogging but some RUclipsrs are saying that the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 can replace the Sony ZV-E10 for indoor talking head videos so it would be easier to use and less accessories.....(if It's true).

I thought sony stopped 3rd party lens support for auto focus? So the sigma 16 1.4 would not have af on the zv10?

Is there a camera that you can use for live streaming through Zoom and also record at the same time?

I currently use webcam AVerMedia PW513. Problem with it then it starts overheating whole mugshot feed on the livestream turns into a slideshow. Audio is fine, gameplay is fine, just my face turns into a slideshow. So I have to drop resolution to let it cool down a bit. Its very annoying problem. Also image is fairly noisy. I have two Elgato mini key light so I'm lit up very nicely, but image is still pretty noisy, some artefacts on the skin etc.
So I'm starting to consider proper camera for live streaming and video making. Sony zv-e10 is very often recommended for content creation. Question is will it endure 3-4h stream without overheating. Also what lens to choose? So for now I have no idea what to choose.

I need a camera for shooting nature & wildlife, cityscapes, travel, food, action, people etc. and a camera with good videography capabilities for a very basic 15-30 minute podcast and high quality photo as in cover of Newsletter or V-zine. Does such a camera exist for a beginner without breaking the bank with great lens options?

The Clean HDMI topic was very helpful, it was something I'd been troublshooting for a while. I wonder if this same philosophy applies to when you utilize your IPhone as a StreamYards video source?

What is the best camera for recording lectures that are 1.5 to 2 hours long. The camera will sit still and not move. It needs to record for long periods without overheating, sometimes in poorly lit classrooms?

I’ve had a Nikon D5100 for over almost 10 years and I want to get amazing quality videos for my new YT channel. Should I just purchase a new lens for better quality, if so which one or should I purchase a new camera and new lenses altogether?

This was a great video! Thank you. Questions, please on the Sony ZV-1: I have a Shure MV7 mic. Can I hook it directly to the camera? Is there a USB port so, I can take the recorded video and transfer it my Windows PC? Thanks again.
