- Dr. Richard Shaw, an expert hired by Johnny Depp's legal team, testified that the psychologist hired by Amber Heard's legal team broke rules and was unethical in rendering an evaluation of Depp without meeting with him. Shaw cited the Goldwater Rule, which calls for psychiatrists not to render an opinion of a public figure without having met with them to do a proper evaluation.

As a person who has been a patient of both psychologists and psychiatrists I found that Dr Spiegel was in fact just stating the facts as they are and his research was correct and true.
As wild as this trial has been, I can see this trial being used for case study and scrutinization for law students. It contains so many examples of proper testimony vs improper/inappropriate testimony. Examples of how to relate with a jury and come across as reliable vs testifying with a combative and defensive tone, which typically results in a jury dismissing your “professional opinions” and damaging your ability to win your case. It just has so many good vs poor examples to study and learn from. It certainly has been an entertaining one to watch.
It will be absolutely be studied in part of, possibly, a full seminar or a course on the trial as a whole. Certainly, proper and wrong way to interpret and apply 'The Goldwater Rule'!
@@victrola2007 Exactly! I would’ve never imagined this trial was going to be the rollercoaster ride it turned into. Yes, I expected some inconsistencies vs what’s seen in everyday trials. But for a deformation trial, the fireworks were vast and delightful.
The “expert witnesses” (and I use that term lightly) for the defendants side and “Miss Heards” testimony of her own were just a complete train wreck to watch and hear.
Also, Depps behavior, composure and overall mannerisms were so intriguing and satisfying to watch. For a guy who openly admitted to so many unflattering attributes and habits, he still managed to come across likable and more importantly, sincere and honest. Unlike Miss Heard, who came across extremely unlikeable, unreliable, dishonest and borderline fraudulent.
It was such a genius move for Depp to start off by owning all of his flaws and that way, the defense couldn’t use them against him later on.
But those are just a couple observations of what will make this such an intriguing and productive case study for future law students. And you’re correct! It contains so many rarities that I can already see places like Princeton and HLS including this trial in case method classes/workshops.
This particular case is unquestionably worthy of in depth dissection and scrutinization. IMO, It certainly commands the attention of law schools and students. It will undoubtedly encourage productive, informative and beneficial ethical exploration and study. I can only imagine the discussions and knowledge it will provide future law students with.
I’m actually reveling just thinking about how dynamic, rewarding and gratifying it would be to participate in such a class that includes this in its curriculum. It definitely resulted in being one for the books.
Remember the children's magazines in the Doctors office? Highlights Magazine that had a feature GOOFUS AND GALLANT?
I can confirm aspects of the case/hearing has already made it into three 2L classes at two schools, and this was prior to the closings. I expect it will widen in the coming months and years, and even more so, if the appellate grants an appeal.
@@victrola2007 The AAPL and APA will likely delve into Goldwater and it's applications, specifically regarding forensic expert witnesses.

There should be consequence on their actions. Sold their soul for money then they can used that money to pay for their failures to act like a decent human beings.

I never expected to care about a Hollywood trial but I will literally cry if Johnny wins this. It will make me feel like maybe I didn’t deserve to get my tooth knocked out with a beer bottle or my ribs sliced with a knife by my ex. I have always felt like even though I was abused I didn’t deserve any justice or sympathy because men are supposed to be tough and stoic so I never even got to heal because I didn’t feel like I could talk about it or cry about. But if people support him maybe they will support me too.
You did not deserve to be abused. No one does. Best wishes to you, hope you can get help and heal.
We support you!!!! Your ex was a terrible human. I wish you all the best!
I brlieve you and support you. My father is the battered spouse in my parents relationship.
That is the gaslighting and degradation you have been subjected to that is making you believe you somehow deserved any of that. I hope you realize this is not the case and that nobody deserves to ever be abused, whether that be physically, emotionally, mentally, or sexually. Once you begin to understand this, you can begin to heal.
Only ever had one broken nose in my life and that was from an ex girlfriend. She blind shot me right on the nose because I wasn’t engaging in her argument. I was so embarrassed to tell anyone. She would scratch me, accuse me of cheating, then ignore me. Her own brother was the one to tell me to leave her. He knew what she was really like and felt for me. I hope she’s a better person now. I get how men would be afraid to come out and say these things.

This is, in my opinion, one of the most interesting moments in this trial. To bring a witness to the stand to not simply support/disparage Heard or Depp, but to educate the jury on why the activities of one of the expert witnesses is wholly counter to what is expected of an "expert" of that profession. It makes Dr. Speigell seem less like a practicing psychiatrist, and more like an actor whose roll is to make the jury question how psychological testing can feasibly be conducted.
Very well put.
Spiegel as an actor whose role is ...
He’s a rebuttal witness
Rebuttal witnesses are a fundamental part of trial conduct…
This man was awesome. Period.
How refreshing. An expert in his field who is humble and knowledgeable.
He also seems to take a neutral stand as opposed to the guy that Heard's lawyers hired who was so biased that he demeaned his own profession
This gentleman is the polar opposite of that spazzy guy that Herd's team brought in .
I believe all the people Johnny's team have brought up have been experts that have treated this hole case very professional.. But the team on Ambers side just ruined their careers.

As a clinician, this witness testimony was a refreshing rebuttal to yesterday’s completely unprofessional and unethical “opinions”. I am dismayed that Dr. Spiegel is treating patients and providing “expert testimony”, especially in a area of practice where many individuals struggle to be heard and overcome stigma related to mental illness, self harm and substance abuse disorders. His testimony showed bias and a total lack or empathy, as well as “traits” of projection of his own perceived shortcomings.

Objection, your honor. He's destroying us. >:(
Talking about narcissistic personality disorders, he just described Amber perfectly....
Last day of testimony tomorrow and I 100% believe that Johnny is innocent of everything with the exception of being caught up with addiction.
Addiction was his downfall….. and Amber used it against him as a way to record him she manipulated him and regardless of the verdict Thursday
This whole trial has amplified global awareness of the possibility of men Being victims in our society and beyond. Amber has made a complete mockery of a movement for women in the industry to stand up against powerful men using their money and power against women for leverage to get what they want. The truth is, Amber and her entire defense and her testimony is a collaboration of a projected perception of what she did to Johnny. She did every single thing to him that she has testified he did to her. She is THE ABUSER! She is calculating, she is cunning and now she is CANCELED!
And I still stand with Johnny Depp
He was also wrong about the connection between narcissism and self-entitlement. It is classified as a personality disorder, not a behavioral disorder. But i think he knew that.
so does the definition of psychopath, The most important testimony of the day was David A. Kulber, Johnny's hand specialist. Johnny's lawyer established Johnny could not punch with his right hand, and he also could not grab with his right hand. Amber's sister claimed Johnny grabbed Amber by the hair and punched her. If he had hit her with his injured finger, he would have had to get his cast fixed, which the doctor said he could not do. That would mean he had to have grabbed her by the hair with a hand that could not grab. Any way you look at her testimony it could not happen. Additionally, if he had been able to punch with his pinned finger, the bruise on Ambers face would have been on the other side of her face.
A psychopath is defined as an individual as having a lack of empathy for others, but uses charm and charisma to manipulate people they encounter. Psychopaths are not recognized as an official mental health disorder, but psychopath traits include using people to gain power, money, and more without any regret or remorse.
Page one of the fascist playbook: "Accuse the enemy of that which you are guilty."

Dr. Sméagol exhibited enough of his own narcissistic personality traits to be a huge red flag for me.
Correct "Dr" Spiegel. :D
This dude's entire career can be summed up as "compassion". Not someone you want going against you in court.
I agree. In addition I might add that he presents as: competent, compassionate, coherent, calm and courageous.
@@Seeker0fTruth you might say Dr. Shaw and his Competent-Cs
@@Devngel653 ahhhhh I sea what you did their 😉
The dfference between Spiegel, Heards "specialist" and JDs specialist is stunning!
Dude was so chilled he could tell me I was likely to die tomorrow and I'd shake his hand and wish him a good day. Other guy would have made me wanna make it happen sooner.
I could listen to Dr. Shaw talk all day. Such a pleasant soothing voice. Professional and concise. No ego. No insanity!
Just like Johnny Depp's voice soothing and could listen to it all day long.
agree! I wish he were my therapist! haha
This is such a positive for Dr Shaw being a professor. His students must enjoy his lectures.
I’m about to see if he has any or is on any channels online- maybe speaking engagements- I want to fall asleep to this calm voice.
And the children’s info wouldn’t hurt- I teach children with emotional/behavioral problems. Lots of trauma and PTSD plus lots of other diagnoses. ❤️
If I ever win the lotto, I'm going to hire him to read books to me. :)

For educational purposes, I feel this trial has added greatly to understanding abuse /trauma & recovery topics. Great witness.
Prayers for those going through divorce or recovery from abuse. My heart goes out to you; I wish you justice.
There really is no recovery when the abuse caused CPTSD. I'm an expert witness there...
But thank you for caring 😻
basically,, for as long as you say "i'm hopeless, i can't recover", then it's true. you can't progress when your own mind sets a barrier right at the starting line. breaking that barrier of "i cannot get better" is the way you start having the ability to progress.
@@Swampgurl777 ❤. It's been 6 years since I left the narcissist. It's a process; a slow process. Give yourself a lot of space and time, but don't give up❤. I can't say I'm fully healed, but I'm better than I was before. Big hug; I do care.
Why does him looking at the jury to answer NOT bother me?
Kudos to Johnny's legal team for getting the most professional witnesses to speak on his behalf. It's impressive the level of professionalism these people exude unlike the ones Amber's team has gathered.
Well, when you have a solid case, it’s easy to attract professionals. No one really likes a bully so the opportunity to set things right appeals to people who are in these fields and motivated to help, would be my guess.
Money walks.
@@TheBaumcm spot on
Only crazy people would see it Amber's way
Usually a good tell for a stable psychiatrist, psychologist, or counselor is their penchant to listen and think before speaking, not gloat for half an hour on their high processing speed.
Lol I was so confused about the processing speed stuff 😫
Exactly! Very well said.
That dude was somethimg
Also, combing one's hair before leaving home, or testifying before and audience millions, is one small checkmark criterion on the stability box.
@@anne-lauriejean-louis2071 it just how fast you take in information and how well you can then react to or relate that information.
The ONLY positive that AH did for anyone was made the world aware of what specialists NOT to hire for ourselves in our lives. Congratulations Amber- not only have you trashed your own career, but you've managed to single handily destroy every single witness that you've put on the stand in your behalf.
The choices made to pick and choose which specialist to hire for Amber's team also clearly indicate and mirror the exact type of characteristics Amber herself reflects. Every damn one of them are nuts. Johnny's were professional, well spoken and highly favored...Amber's were combative, did their jobs half-assed, presented themselves to be extremely argumentative and a know it all...... EXACTLY how Amber carries and portrays herself.
Sidenote- Johnny is right hand dominate, so it's logical to agree that when a right hand dominate person throws a punch in the heat of an argument they would instinctively throw a punch with their dominate hand/ fist.... with a right hand dominate person throwing a right handed punch, any black eyes, bruises or marks would land on the receiving persons left side of their face... Quite odd how all of Amber's bruises, marks and black eyes were ALL on her right side of her face. She is also right hand dominate and instinctively, would unknowingly focus on the right side of her face when concentrating on bringing focus to a specific part of her face such as using makeup to create a bruise.
Good point!!!
Great observation!
BRILLIANTLY expressed!! Thank you! So spot on!!!
First paragraph: my thoughts exactly. It is what it is ;)
Second paragraph: The right hand to the left side of the face is a great observation, but your hand dominate side argument is a bit far-fetched. I'm right-handed. When I shave, I use my right hand for both sides of my face, yet the left side is "easier" to shave, it feels more natural, it's the side I start with. So... dunno bout that part. Cheers!
This doctor is a true professional. He exudes compassion, knowledge and trustworthiness.
So true , great man and it's a shame that all are not aware as he in his profession!🤔

He has such a calm and gentle presence. He could easily make a patient feel at ease and comfortable being open and vulnerable in front of him. The guy from Heard’s side was so aggressive and condescending the patient would probably leave worse off than when they came.
😭😭🤣🤣🤣👌🏴
I'd expect no less from him. He treats children and adolescents, who lack the mental capacity of an adult.

@@benjamincakes6356 😂 I shouldn’t be laughing at this, but I am lol
This guy was awesome. I found myself wanting him to continue explaining things-whether they were related to the trial or not! I just wanted him to keep talking. He was so calm, knowledgeable, and professional. Not being a nutcase helped, too. :-)
I concur with his opinion. It is highly unethical to make assumptions and diagnose a person you have never meet and certainly never did an evaluation on or tested. We had a long discussion about this and that it has offended those who respect and uphold the ethnics of that profession.
For anyone who is a curious cat like I am, “The Goldwater Rule is a statement of ethics first issued by the American Psychiatric Association in 1973 restraining psychiatrists from speculating about the mental state of public figures. The rule enjoins psychiatrists from professionally diagnosing someone they have not personally evaluated” (psychology today). This means that Dr. Spiegel has broken that rule.
O thank you!! Because I was torn from looking it up and continuing watching.
thank you 😊
This doctor explains exactly what the Goldwater Rule is, with much detail. You just have to listen to his testimony. Which is why we are all here right?
@@dragonsky799 I found out after I posted 🤣

Wow, this guy is on point and smashing Spiegel’s integrity. This guy is clearly someone who follows specific guidelines when it comes to psychiatric evaluations.
well actually the judge didn't really want to hear it because it was too long winded. And Spiegel's main argument that Spiegel kept repeating.. that if examining somebody is required in order to give an opinion, then all sorts of things would be impossible.. nobody has yet addressed that!!!!

@@Viktor_Von_Doom that’s a not a rule more an ethnic and moral conduct of the profession. Are you suggesting that Trump can’t be labeled as a narcissist by his social media posts?
@@goodtimesbadtimes5273 actually that specific example about Trump and his tweets has been picked apart and explained ad nauseam as to why it *still* can’t be an official diagnosis, but dozens of psychiatrists have made private exceptions due to concerns about his level of power over the nation and the world to state their private opinions that he regularly and publicly exhibits more than 5 of the 9 traits for NPD. Spiegel used “snippets” of the UK trial, some deposition material, and (arguably between his own deposition and testimony yesterday) also some of Depp’s acting. So short answer is, no, official diagnosis can’t be made in either case without meeting with the patient, and otherwise the two examples (Depp & Trump) are nothing alike in quality of material reviewed or quantity of professionals consulted. 🤷🏻♀️
Having worked with so many psychiatrists, it is easy to differentiate psychiatrists who went to psychiatry for the love of serving versus those to who went to psychiatry with the hope that they can either heal themselves or cover up their own personal issues and
usually gets enmeshed with their patients problems & becomes disastrous for the patient.
as someone who was inpatient in child/adolescent psych, i could only dream of a professional as knowledgeable and genuine as this man. unfortunately i believe he is a part of a minority. all of my psychiatrists through the years have been terrible. something tells me. unlike the psychiatrist treating me at the time, i highly doubt this man would tell me i "just need to figure it out on my own" upon arriving in emerg after an unalive attempt. i bet this dude would actually do his job.

If amber loses this case, she’s not gonna be able to afford lawyers to appeal.
You know, I have to admit, in the beginning I was iffy on this judge. I even think I commented that I wasn't sure if I trusted her because at first it felt like she may have been kinda bias. @@Candybomb79 I've observed that the judge is doing her job of keeping bias out if the equation and is doing her duty to maintain fairness.
She has to be on top of it since it's on camera. I think that's one of the reasons she denied the claim to wrap up the trial when there was still a lot of evidence left. She wants to be as thorough as possible.
