I've been "cookie monster screaming" for years and it has started to cause me to lose my voice after. It's hard to switch from that to this but I'm trying. This has been super helpful!
Same, until I found some kind of way of moving slightly and finding the false vocal chords. One hundred percent had to do with support muscles. Without them, you're trying to support it all on the delicate muscles and cartilage in your neck/throat, and they're just not built for that. It wasn't the healthiest way, but my first big step towards doing it well actually involved a little clenching. I've learned to relax that since, but it definitely put me on the path to finding the RIGHT muscles to use. Prior to, I'd always end up in coughing fits, sore throat for a day or two, raspier voice. Now, every once in a while I'll feel it a little (tea fixes it in minutes), but generally I can sing along to an album or three and you'd never know (nor would I, really). Literally full metalcore albums with nothing but growling and screaming. The BIG thing to remember is that the volume you hear on stage or on a record has a level of production on top of it. Trying to emulate the INTENSITY without amplification is also a recipe for disaster. I know it's not metal, but Dave Grohl is said to be an incredibly quiet singer in person, but fantastic sound engineers can fix that in a second. A lot of people try to sing over music they're listening to and trying to hear themselves, it's a losing battle and reinforces bad habits. Do it at a volume that's comfortable for YOU, not a volume that will let you hear it over your headphones or whatever. It's like he said at the start, if you're just trying to copy what someone else is doing, you're going to hurt yourself. It requires legit technique to do well. Videos are great, but it's absolutely possible to sort of figure it out on your own. Just... if it hurts or feels different, stop, you're doing it wrong.
@@_mnejing same. I found it by kinda feeling it out. Problem is i think i missed steps now my repertoire consists of whisper screaming and pig squeals 😅
This definitely works. Note: you may still feel a bit of discomfort and fatigue at first. Especially when trying to control pick within the yell. That's ok. You will condition and improve. If you get a bit of fatigue or start to lose your voice a little, that's ok. If you taste blood or it's painful, start the lesson over :).
You're the first person who has technically explained this to me rather than just saying "visualize it." Thank you so much!! While visualizing is an important part of singing, when it comes to distortion, the weirdest techniques end up being the most helpful lol.
Hey. I'm a female aspiring vocalist, I've been learning belting and compression lately. But distortion just seemed impossible for me. Now it isn't anymore! I'm finally on my way to learn growls and screams. Thank you so much for this tutorial, it helped me immensely. Subscribed! Have a nice day.
@@sjsjdjfjf5116 Distortion is mostly about pressure. Not pressure on your chords but from your diaphragm. Ideally you use a fry technique but try to place it at the bottom of your chords, then open up your throat and push -only- from the diaphragm. So, "squeeze" (fry) at the bottom, open the rest. That's the easiest way for me to put it.
I know this video is over two years old but sir... let me tell ya; you just made want to start singing again. After almost three years of giving up at it to focusing on guitar. All can I say is thank you, hope you're okay 💜
I am pretty stuck right now. I'm in a grunge band with a good mix of melodic and heavy songs, we've been going 4 years. Since the big covid break we all had, I've found it incredibly hard to scream at all (where it's intended/needed) and find my voice just dries up instantly when I try to scream. I couldn't even tell you what my technique was before covid as I self-taught from the age of 9, listening to a lot of nu-metal, so imitated that and had no issues. When I started listening to punk rock and other genres, I just kind of imitated that too and it worked up until covid, but since that big break of no shows, I've had issues trying to dial it back in after doing it for YEARS. I'm currently tracking vocals for our 2nd EP and it's got to the point where I'm actually afraid to attempt any of the screaming passages in the songs on the EP, because I know how it's going to go. I tried a couple of passes and it's the same thing - my voice just instantly dries up, chokes out and sounds weak. I'm going to attempt this method after a rest day tomorrow and hope that it re-trains my voice in some way. To anyone who had the patience to read this, sorry for the essay. There's nothing worse than feeling you can't deliver so I just needed to vent amongst some like-minded people.
Well the only solution as a fellow vocalist is get a coach. Search for a good one. To my experience you will know if after some weeks you feel your voice different in a good way.
Sorry for the late reply. I got it sorted, in the end. Some of it was physical tension and the rest was psychological, as it turned out. I was watching another video the following day after this one, not really taking it in, and something he said just clicked in my head - I can't even explain what it was. I thought "Hmm, I'll try it again." Vocals got finished that day. Seemed that I wasn't giving myself enough support and that in turn was tiring me and my voice out.
The same thing happened to me and I'm still trying to re learn my screams and it's even harder now bc I'm so discouraged bc I know I already learned and I hate that I forgot )): I hope with more work i can get to where you are
The part where you jodel like Tarzan and then go "this is good stuff" is just amazing. You truly help me gather the confidence to make a fool of myself enough to improve my singig!
10+ minutes of advanced music theory uttered at an extremely fast pace layered with vocal fry. Nothing against Adam Neely but holy shit is it hard to sit through his videos.
Every video in the past has described vocal fry as "you just feel it" with no explanation on what that feels like, and this video i learned EXACTLY what that feels like and how to do it.
The Cookie Monster thing is called a growl note, and while it can be damaging if overused, when used correctly it can greatly enhance bass singing, Tim Foust is the master of growl notes

Before this tutorial, I couldn't sing aggressively for the life of me. Now, people have made folk songs about me! They include, "He's Coming Up My Drain," "Have Mercy," and my personal favorite, "Balad Of The Screaming Man I Heard In My Basement"
I just came across this today. I knew there was a "trick" (skill that takes practice) to actually doing it. I remember singing rock songs until my voice just gave out the next day. I was always thinking I could never be a rock singer. Now i think I'll never be a rock singer, but i can sorta sound like one.
Dude. I’ve been a vocalist and performer for so long, but I’ve never been able to express myself through my favorite genres: metal, hardcore, etc. Of all the videos, this was the clearest and most accessible lesson. I was starting to think I would never be able to scream, that I would just be missing something forever. Thank you man, seriously this was so helpful.
Divide With your profile picture, I just imagined a pre-title theme scene focused on Kevin being mildly inconvenienced by the most random things around the office and him making that sound every time

This is actually pretty damn helpful, and I was kinda discovering this on my own by accident, but putting it step by step really puts it in a better perspective. I remember a couple of Kurt Cobain's old home recordings had him yodeling a lot when he'd take breaks, and now it makes sense. I thought he was just being a goofball, but that's how he came out with that amazing voice of his.
Learning to scream is my goal for my newest quarantine craft. I want to sing Pierce The Veil songs and Dance Gavin Dance. Also im a time person and I think it would be dope to have a big sound.
I'm a scare actor and my first week WRECKED my vocal cords. I'm a singer before I'm an actor and I was so scared I'd lose my singing ability, I'm using this to learn how to scream and retain my voice. I'll check back in after a bit to lyk how it goes
The metal vocalist in me wants to be all “these aren’t screams, blah blah blah” but honestly, with all the unsafe teachings out there, at least people aren’t going to hurt themselves with this one. 10/10 lol I do want to add for anyone reading this, drink a lot of (room temp/warm) water and avoid things like coffee or soda. While this technique is safe, it dehydrates your throat fairly quickly and can get uncomfortable after extended periods of time.
Zappabain some people do that but that’s not about technique. Drinking milk/dairy along with other certain types of drinks creates phlegm in your throat which creates a gurgling sound. Personally I can’t stand that cause it makes me choke on my own saliva 😂 I don’t know if that’s safe or not. I would avoid anything cold though as it will make your throat tighter (less warmed up quite literally).
Ictus that sounds like semantics lol. Most people I know call it phlegm even though that’s not technically what it is. It’s a commonly accepted phrasing. Fair criticism, but a bit unnecessary my dude.
@@glumauig21 learning how to do non tonal fry screams and building up you diaphragms strength and stamina takes very little technical abillity and is a great way to build up projection and confidence in your voice. Doing tonal frys, or grit singing, is slightly more technical, however ive always found it easier to find notes while doing it myself. Maybe its because i started as a screamer and moved to singing later
I NEVER watch RUclips for anything other than music recordings or memes, but you are amazing dude! No corny editing or put-on personality, super chill and succinct and just plain sick. If you taught at a university or something you’d be a favorite teacher for sure, you have a serious talent for teaching.
dude this helped so much, I've been abusing my vocals for so long just trying the fry. By applying the breaking and yodeling technique, it happened right away. I cannot express how ecstatic I am. Thank you so much
This is so useful, thank you. I often go for harsher vocals when singing but found I was hit-and-miss. This warm-up and technique truly helps me gain more control over them and I've surprised myself with the results.

I've been "cookie monster screaming" for years and it has started to cause me to lose my voice after. It's hard to switch from that to this but I'm trying. This has been super helpful!
I tried the cookie monster growl for just a second and my voice already hurts, i didnt realize that it would grate my voice like that haha
@@pogpogpurinn ye for me too haha 😅

I’m also a girl and I don’t seem to have a very strong vocal break like it’s very soft and I have to push for it to happen is thta just me?
@@sjsjdjfjf5116 Distortion is mostly about pressure. Not pressure on your chords but from your diaphragm. Ideally you use a fry technique but try to place it at the bottom of your chords, then open up your throat and push -only- from the diaphragm. So, "squeeze" (fry) at the bottom, open the rest. That's the easiest way for me to put it.

How’s it going bro?
Well the only solution as a fellow vocalist is get a coach. Search for a good one. To my experience you will know if after some weeks you feel your voice different in a good way.
How is It bro pleaseee
Sorry for the late reply.
I got it sorted, in the end.
Some of it was physical tension and the rest was psychological, as it turned out.
I was watching another video the following day after this one, not really taking it in, and something he said just clicked in my head - I can't even explain what it was.
I thought "Hmm, I'll try it again."
Vocals got finished that day.

The Cookie Monster thing is called a growl note, and while it can be damaging if overused, when used correctly it can greatly enhance bass singing, Tim Foust is the master of growl notes

The metal vocalist in me wants to be all “these aren’t screams, blah blah blah” but honestly, with all the unsafe teachings out there, at least people aren’t going to hurt themselves with this one. 10/10 lol
I do want to add for anyone reading this, drink a lot of (room temp/warm) water and avoid things like coffee or soda. While this technique is safe, it dehydrates your throat fairly quickly and can get uncomfortable after extended periods of time.
I heard people (e.g. Opeth's singer Mikåel I think) drank milk so the vocal cords were more prone to growling.
@@Zappabain The Browning drinks Yoohoo!
Dan Hernandez it does not create phlem it binds to the mucus lining your throat and thickens it. Phlem is something else entirely.
Ictus that sounds like semantics lol. Most people I know call it phlegm even though that’s not technically what it is. It’s a commonly accepted phrasing. Fair criticism, but a bit unnecessary my dude.
