Well said man. A lot of "how to scream" videos on youtube easily end up coming across as confusing, but I think you did well to keep it as simple and relatable as possible. Would love to hear that continue into the pitched screaming topic.
Thanks a lot for watching Dylan! Definitely have some extra things to mention in the pitched screaming one based on everyone’s questions. Glad that I didn’t film them in the same day Are there any topics you’d like me to elaborate on in the next videos?
I started playing in a hardcore/metal band (although today this would surely be called metal core lol but we never used that term at the time) around 2000/2001, and I had a hell of a time figuring out how to do this right. For the first year or so my technique was terrible and I would push too hard and blow out my voice. After seeing various bands live and studying the singers I started ti notice the way the singers often were screaming without looking like they were straining and about to blow an artery or something, and eventually figured out the correct technique, or something close to it. I stopped playing metal for the most part soon after, by taking too much acid one night and discovering the Grateful Dead (I’m serious-sorry everyone), but I still love metal, especially been going back to it in recent years, but god damn I wish I would’ve had a video like this back then. Great explanation!
Insane. I've tried pretty much EVERY TECHNIQUE, watched EVERY VIDEO, yet couldn't get past whisper screams (that damaged my throat). Five minutes after watching your video, I managed to actually do it. This video is PURE GOLD, thank you so much for this tutorial 🙏
dude, thank you so much, seriously - i have a year of experience fry screaming and i've been playing with a band almost that whole time and this video has helped me take the power and aggression of my screams to the next level. the tip about not holding back is also extremely helpful, cause i've tried doing that at shows to make my voice last longer but it just ended up making my throat feel scratchy.
Thanks so much for watching and I’m stoked it helped ! I also noticed that for myself as well. And it’s weird because it seems obvious to hold back to preserve but it ends up hurting more. Obviously don’t overly push to be obnoxious, but once you find that perfect pocket. You’re good.
Dude thank you so much for checking it out. That is very much so the unfortunate reality for a lot of people. Will have to wait until people are out of the house/ apartment or even try the technique into a pillow haha. Hope to hear Eric’s vocals on the new jams soon
Hahaha damn that sucks man. I feel very lucky to have had semi soundproof room. And back in the days of actually writing songs in a room, had plenty of time to get loud. The cup thing is interesting tho. How far do you need to have it placed v
Same!! I screamed at 12:00 AM when I thought that everyone must be in deep sleep and I screamed the hell out and my uncle came to my study room (where I do my studies and singing) and asked "Is everything all right?" I said "Yeah yeah I was just practicing screaming". I felt so guilty.
This is great advice! I noticed tho that this video is recorded at home, a great place to practice screaming surely, however I encourage you, and everyone else, to practice their screaming techniques wherever they go. I used to practice as an inventory sales associate, they loved hearing me randomly belt out a good high pitch growlscream while counting the shelves!
Hahaha as long. As you don’t get fired, and feel comfortable, I say go for it. If you’re holding back or self conscious, definitely more likely to hurt yourself

I used to dedicate my singing to mostly classical techniques, but now I'm really determined to get into this hardcore style. I love all these insturction videos, so.... thank you. I appreciate that! I definitely am considering it because there are some out there but I feel like they’re missing some information that I found extremely helpful. What kind of vocals do you do?
@@BrendonKPadjasek It's honestly what I found easier to start with. Originally I was trying to aim for the screaming style Adrian from Northlane used to do but I just didn't know enough about screaming at the time. My favorite vocalist are Adrian fitipaldes, Ryo kinoshita, and Brian Willie
Oh yeah I think Adrian does a similar thing to what I’m doing from touring with him years ago. At least I think so. Not sure what Ryo is doing but he’s a beast and killed it every day on those tours we did
I would add that this technique is usual referred to as a fry scream. The other one mentioned typically used in the death side of the core/metal genre is typically called false chord. What kind of vocals do you do?
I've always enjoyed singing along to Linkin Park and 30STM, but could never hit those crazy-scream notes, this is gonna be immensely helpful, thank you!
Hey thank you so much! I’ve always loved Chester’s voice as well. I believe he’s laying back on the pushing side of things so take it easy at first and find your comfortable spot. I know he’s able to hold some screams out for crazy long so it’s all about finding the right compression
That sorta voice cracking hollering thing that happened on his lower scream to the end is what made it click for me a while back. It's that sorta rasp that appears when your voice is breaking between head voice and chest voice. If anyone is having trouble after watching this tutorial try ramping up like he does but when your voice breaks into head voice try going back and forth, and letting yourself yodel.
I learned from loosing my voice every few days at band practice 20 years ago. Literally no one showed me anything, just screamed at the top of my lungs for hr’s…it took a few years before I could fully control all diff styles of distorted vocals. Now 20 years on I can do any style with zero damage...My normal voice is also fine btw ..it is amazing how much damage it can heal from. I do feel like learning at low volume then getting louder later would be safer for people. After all these years I would say learning Volume/breath control is the most important thing.

Man, to this day Earth Gazer is still one of my favourite songs and you're one of my top vocalists thanks to that track. So glad I found this video on my recomendations
Thank you so much for this video. Unfortunately, the "Don't hold back" part is the most hard in it cause a lot of people just afraid of being judged. So do i ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
That's absolutely the hardest part about vocals in general I find. It's such a mental thing and the minute you start feeling unconfident, it all falls apart. You can always try it into a pillow lol just to get the idea down and comfortable. But then finding a place to put it into practice is the hard part
Definitely liking and subbing. And i dont do that too much. Thanks man. Really. Im 31, been writing singing low screaming/yelling for 15yrs now or so. Always have the passion. This video literally helped me in some ways as far as what im doing wrong. I practiced your techniques, and i guess with the previous experience i been having i nailed it. Thanks man
Here we go, my 100,000th tutorial after almost 18 years and still not able to scream, lets see of this is the one Edit: so unfortunately for me one of the steps was " add distortion " which is exactly what i don't know how to do........ bummer
I was listening to structures since high school and didn’t listen to you guys in a while. I’m now in my twenties. I randomly stumped upon this video and had no idea you were from structures until you said so. The way my eyes lit up at this full circle moment.
I didn't expect the vocalist for a pretty heavy band to be such a chill and down to earth dude haha, I was also aware of structures long before seeing this, so awesome :) this was really helpful
Lol the music doesn't make the person who they are who the person is makes the music your background your race your upbringing doesn't define what your musical preference should be there's buisness men who listen to metal and factory workers who listen to opera were all unique and our interests don't decide who we are we decide what our interests are. The dudes from infant annihilator sing about the most evil shit but are kind and very social and happy people
I sing a lot at my work as a daycare teacher, and I find that my voice strains throughout the day. So, im definitely going to try these exercises to see if they help.
Oh they should definitely help with removing strain especially for actual singing. My vocal instructor was an amazing vocalist and I can definitely say my projection improved drastically using these techniques.
I'm only a year late but I'm thinkin about doin metal among other styles of music so from 101 to infinity BRING IT ON❣️ Much love and many blessings to you
I really like the vocals in the recording of the Roadhouse live concert, great job. I still often eavesdrop. I was also pleased with your joint track with Northlane on the new album
@@BrendonKPadjasek not hurting at all! Just some fatigue if i don't warmup properly or if I "push" to much since it's not that long that i learned doing it! within some time i will be able to record something i guess!
This is perfect. I'm going to practice and see if I can do it. By the way, I've watched a lot of Chris Liepe videos - it's nice to see him being quoted.
Oh yeah Chris is great. Love his approach and explanations Thank you. Hope it works out, just be sure to take it slow and if you feel strain , go a bit softer and take the steps in parts
lol no I think it definitely happens to us all. I know a lot of engineers purposely make the recording room a bit warmer to loosen up the vocal chords as well

Thank you! I'm hoping this will help me sing along better with Chris and Lane.🤘😆🤘
Yeah they’re great. Thanks!
@@BrendonKPadjasek Thank you so much for an advice!
No worries. Also if you drive you can always try it in the car haha. Let the traffic hear you
Definitely liking and subbing. Thanks man
Always so happy to hear that. Thank you my friend! I haven’t made a vocal video in a while but I’ll find the right topic and time to do so
I'll look for the "how to sing" first
Good call!
Great information and tips! Wish I saw this a year ago when it was first posted.. I'll be checking you out more!
Eh thanks so much! I plan to make a few more videos soon
Here we go, my 100,000th tutorial after almost 18 years and still not able to scream, lets see of this is the one
Edit: so unfortunately for me one of the steps was " add distortion " which is exactly what i don't know how to do........ bummer
Me too
Same! Idk how to add distortion…
Distortion is that scratchiness, shouldn't be that hard
@@yup7242 it is for me man, it just doesn't work for some reason
@@reginameyers same boat
Well I love this video. You and Will Ramos are excellent teachers
EH thanks so much! I was watching his the other day as well
@@BrendonKPadjasek No problem, man. I can already feel a difference
@@ScopeShadow94 that’s amazing to hear

@@BrendonKPadjasek super cool!
thanks man, my screaming style feels so dry and generic, but with this tutorial, I feel like Imma be able to do the style I want.
That makes me so happy to hear
Definitely interested in that Pitch Screaming video!👍🏼
I like the Redwood Tree vocal exercise! I learned it as "Greenwood tree" in high school choir.
Oh interesting Ive never heard of that one
Спасибо за объяснение возникновения звука на основе своего опыта! Очень познавательно
I was listening to structures since high school and didn’t listen to you guys in a while. I’m now in my twenties. I randomly stumped upon this video and had no idea you were from structures until you said so. The way my eyes lit up at this full circle moment.
ehh thanks for the continued support! Means a lot!
@@BrendonKPadjasek I discovered u guys with hydroplaning
I didn't expect the vocalist for a pretty heavy band to be such a chill and down to earth dude haha, I was also aware of structures long before seeing this, so awesome :) this was really helpful
Eh thanks so much! Yeah I’m just a normal guy that is fortunate to do what he loves for a living. No reason to not be kinda and helpful haha
I'm only a year late but I'm thinkin about doin metal among other styles of music so from 101 to infinity BRING IT ON❣️ Much love and many blessings to you
Great idea my friend! And thanks for watching
I really like the vocals in the recording of the Roadhouse live concert, great job. I still often eavesdrop. I was also pleased with your joint track with Northlane on the new album
Thank you my friend! Yeah I’m stoked on how that show turned out
Finally a Tutorial from one of my Favorite Musicans. Ur amazing bro! Trying it today !
Thank you so much! If you have any questions feel free to pop them down here and let me know how it goes
this was totally gold the easiest and best explaination to understand so far in my research, thanks bro.
Thank you. Super glad you found it useful and helpful
So, to sum the video.
How to scream: just scream.
Well thank you
you are so very welcome my man
@@BrendonKPadjasek first I meant it sarcastically, but now, when I actually tried it, dude, it it freaking works! 😂😂😂
Kudos for referencing the whacky waving inflatable arm flailing tube man
He’s always so underrepresented
holy shit i think i’m actually finally getting it from this video dude thank you so much
No problem! So glad it’s helpful! Just remember if you ever feel any stain, take a break and come back to it another day
@@BrendonKPadjasektotally dude

I am here to learn Metalcore screaming for my first Parkway Drive concert 🤪
Amazing. Enjoy!
@ thank you. They always play on Festivals and it’s so amazing that they finally do a normal tour in my home city.
This is the video that confirms that i am doing it right. Thanks a lot!
Stoked to hear that! As long as it doesn’t hurt and you’re getting the tone, you’re doing good in my books
@@BrendonKPadjasek not hurting at all! Just some fatigue if i don't warmup properly or if I "push" to much since it's not that long that i learned doing it! within some time i will be able to record something i guess!
@drspody awesome. I hope it goes well!
Really well taught, cheers
thank you!
Dude you sound insane, thats awesome!
Thank you for the kind words!
Best Tutorial so far !!! i love it
Thank you so much my friend. I’m glad you found it useful
Nate Barcalow from Finch is my inspiration to nail a good scream some day 😭 his vocals are amazing
Oh yeah I grew up listening to finch
Appreciate the knowledge
yes yes yes. singing and screaming and moving on stage is one of the best sports of all time :D i totally agree
Hahahah and very difficult
This is perfect. I'm going to practice and see if I can do it. By the way, I've watched a lot of Chris Liepe videos - it's nice to see him being quoted.
Oh yeah Chris is great. Love his approach and explanations
Thank you. Hope it works out, just be sure to take it slow and if you feel strain , go a bit softer and take the steps in parts
Awesome, thanks dude
Thanks for checking it out
the unaccompanied bach violin is great, fun piece to play
Haha thank you. That’s when you know it’s serious time
Thanks for mentioning the sweating part, 'cause I was wondering if it's only me :D
lol no I think it definitely happens to us all. I know a lot of engineers purposely make the recording room a bit warmer to loosen up the vocal chords as well
