@@liamaldrich2476 Yup. Unfortunately the screaming on those first three albums sound better to me than anything after. Once he started trying to do things properly it lost a lot of the rawness and emotion which made me love it. From the Self Titled and Iowa where he’s just ripping his vocal cords apart. To Vol 3 where he’s just unnaturally raising the pitch of his voice. Now it feels like the screaming has lost a lot of the feeling it used to have. Almost like it’s more of an instrument than it is an emotion.
"I love metal because it's so natural, so untainted" - "They make the mistake of singing their emotions, I show them how to fake it" i get it, but it sounds funny XD

Caleb produced an album for Come the Dawn. One of the best sounding albums I've ever heard from front to back. Band "reinvented" itself and went through a name change. Do not like. Wish we could get more of their first album sound with Caleb at the helm in the studio.
3:22 How he goes from the screaming to singing is talent. It really shows how controlled the vocals are. I don't listen to metal, but I can appreciate his skillfulness
MATTYYYYYYY ♥️♥️ I love the fact that the vocal coach pointed out that this kind of music comes from the heart and not a mindset of money and pleasure the ‘media’.
The techniques are what she sells as her instructional products. So at very least that's why they didn't include more of those, because never do for free what people will pay for.
The only anger I see in this comment section is people complaining about butthurt people being elitists and complaining, but I can't see any of those, cAUSE THERE ARE TOO MANY COMPLAINING ABOUT THEM-
I love how she said she was a hippy back in the day and lost the way. Then said we were the ones that understood it and knew the way. Love the paradoxical comparisons. The nu gen hippies 🤘✌️🌈
I randomly bumped into her before the Eluveitie show in NYC two days ago and said hi. So cool and unexpected, she seemed really sweet. Just from her presence you can tell that she's loved and respected by not only the artists but by their fans as well.
The core genres are a fusion of hardcore punk and death metal. Sometimes they can be lighter and more melodic on the punk side(metalcore), sometimes more on the death metal side (deathcore). In my view I put both more on the side of metal than punk. Especially deathcore. And this is coming from someone that doesn't really listen to either genre that often anymore. Ultimately, it doesn't matter. I find arguing what is or isn't metal, and being an elitist in terms of music, a waste of time.
Thrash metal. Hardcore punk+ speed metal/NWOBHM= thrash metal. I could also throw grindcore onto the argument of metal and punk infused genres, but grindcore has never really been a genre I've read about.
Some context for anyone who isn’t a metal musician. Melissa Cross is the most respected vocal coach in metal by a pretty significant margin. Eric Green No you really don't. BMTH are cancerous posers who are not only shit live but have a singer that sounds like a cat being raped.
Says the guy who is subscribed to dozens of poser girls
LoG
I saw them live last November and they were amazing. From seeing videos of oli singing live I didn't think they'd be that good but they blew me away
He is a client of hers. There's even a video of the two of them together. Melissa Cross has been around forever, and has two instructional DVDs, The Zen of Screaming 1 and 2
This was so much more wholesome and positive than I thought it would be, totally want to watch more!
As someone who is also a classically trained singer and who teaches classical voice, everything she is teaching in this video is 100% legit, and could be used in a classical lesson.
Why so many downvotes? Melissa Cross has helped a great many vocalists find their sound without damaging their voices, and has helped vocalists recover their voices after years of bad habits. This lady is a legend!
3:28 the reasons she gives for her love of metal, perfect answer to give when people ask “how can you like that noise”
Btw such a kickass punk rock sounding statement lol
Everyone loves metal. They just don't know it yet. My mom hated metal until I introduced her to Nightwish and my brother to Dragon Force.

All the people debating on how these bands aren't metal but nobody mentions how far melissa cross has come. Btw Meshuggah has screaming , is that still to lame ?
Marilyn Hanson do you seriously not hear the difference between the two
The screaming isn't what makes it core...
Marilyn Hanson buddy you missed the point. The difference between Meshuggah and Memphis Mayfire goes way beyond the screaming...
Comparing metalcore to Meshuggah is like comparing Katy perry to Andrew bird
Screaming has nothing to do with a band being metal or not.
Corey Taylor : *screaming
Melissa Cross : hold my beer
If She hears corey screaming she would kick corey in the face
@@damf5488 especially the old era Corey.
Look at Corey Taylor ffs. That guy has coolest voice i ever heard. He can scream and yet he can softly sing at the same time
I definitely feel he's gotten some of these lessions bc like, have you heard his voice in interviews during the Iowa era? His voice was so messed up.
@@melodramaticmelomaniac you're completely right. He has so much more control these days.
In my opinion I don't think he is the greatest singer to have better lived but he's defo god tier, he is the master at false chords. Layne Staley is the best singer ever.
@@melodramaticmelomaniac from 99 to 02 he was literally just yelling and then applying distortion in his throat, which is why those early vocals are so powerful on those early records, but he really fucked himself up for a bit after that. I've played around with imitating them and it literally HURTS to get though an entire song because of that method. Now he fry screams like a smart person lol
Yay!, now i can pretend to be a velociraptor without having to explain why my voice hurts. ^_^
"I love metal because it's so natural, so untainted" - "They make the mistake of singing their emotions, I show them how to fake it"
i get it, but it sounds funny XD
liquidminds it's the same with classical singing. You can sing your emotions but you can't let your emotions affect your body and its functions.
6S F the balance you want the best you have to give it your whole body. You want be 80% there then yeah you can play it safe. And yeah that's good enough but that's not someone giving everything to there art
I purchased her Zen Art Screaming DVD's I believe 8 years ago, maybe less. Watched them and never had a problem with losing my voice after that. Played countless shows and people would be shocked my voice wasn't completely raspy or just gone. I owe that to Melissa Cross and her techniques.
1:20 her hands are unintentionally doing the horns, true metalhead.
i used to not really like metal and hardcore but as ive gotten older i have grown to appreciate it in a way i don’t think i could when i was younger
I'm sorry but wtf is even going on in this comment section 😂
Laurin Thor People with no hobbies and nothing else to do in life lol.
Sherry Robson Yea Most certainly haha
Just Ignore it.
Thanks for the warning, I was about to scroll down.
RUclips.
I am very here for heavy metal singers not trying to be "macho" and actually learning how to do their thing without hurting themselves.
because of some of these comments, i'm going to start calling nickleback metal.
kodiak wild
You sir gave me a huge idea of a way to treat poser dumbass elitists... You have my respect
kodiak wild Nickleback is definitely weeping into their millions because you don't like their music.
I tried calling nickleback, but there was no reply.
kodiak wild legendary metal band Nickelback is
kodiak wild no one will care because people know it isn't true, this only proves that you're fucking stupid
The zen of screaming ???
Arions Yep. It's pretty helpful. Used it for a few years. Haven't really done any of it for awhile though, so I'm probably worse than I already was.
Oh yeeeaaaaaaaaaaa
the jedi of screaming!
Sith of Scream
She should make a new DVD!
This woman is a legend, please teach me about growling lol
Why don't you ask Dave Growl?
Her understanding and appreciation for the sincerity in a lot of metal genres was actually moving. This is awesome.
"The only vocal coach that cared about metal" I felt him when he said that
Here come the metal elitists that think they can define metal for everyone.
I agree with every single word that she said right there! 3:25 She is awesome!!
She didn't just help those bands, like Beartooth or Memphis May Fire but big guys like Corey Taylor from SLIPKNOT
W h a t
Been a big fan of metalcore for 15 years and I love how she helped so many bands I love sustain their vocals
When i saw Beartooth I was like HELL YEAH... One of my favorite bands :DD
YEAH MAN BEARTOOTH IS BEST
Caleb produced an album for Come the Dawn. One of the best sounding albums I've ever heard from front to back. Band "reinvented" itself and went through a name change. Do not like. Wish we could get more of their first album sound with Caleb at the helm in the studio.
But, silvertooth...
Is this the chick that helped Randy Blythe?
Jordan Laney yes
Elijha Jefferson and Corey Taylor, she's helped so many people it's insane.
Jordan Laney I
This woman fucked all of their voices.
Edit32 fucked their voices how exactly?
3:22 How he goes from the screaming to singing is talent. It really shows how controlled the vocals are. I don't listen to metal, but I can appreciate his skillfulness
Simone whats the song?
@@12345themadguy The Sinner
MATTYYYYYYY ♥️♥️
I love the fact that the vocal coach pointed out that this kind of music comes from the heart and not a mindset of money and pleasure the ‘media’.
I strained my voice so hard doing screams today and then this video showed up in my feed! The metal gods are speaking to me
nah google listens
Movements and Beartooth!!! WOOO
Metal, post hardcore etc is my fav music and always will be 🤘🏻
kayla amaya Hi! You know by any chance the name of the song that plays in the video? I really liked them! ^^
@@Grrrr1997
The Beartooth song was called Body Bag. Idk what the Movements song was called though
Jazzman G Thank you!!
Jazzman G movements “worst wishes” i believe
@@KelWh Thanks
She deserves a place in the Hall of Fame - she is virtually a life saver!
I feel like this video could have been much longer and included more of her techniques and interactions with singers.
The techniques are what she sells as her instructional products. So at very least that's why they didn't include more of those, because never do for free what people will pay for.
The only anger I see in this comment section is people complaining about butthurt people being elitists and complaining, but I can't see any of those, cAUSE THERE ARE TOO MANY COMPLAINING ABOUT THEM-
Date Masamune and now I see so many people complaining about the complainers. Ironic isn’t it.
Bro, she is the queen of metal in my
Eyes. what a saint!
I love metal so much, always have, always will. God bless this woman
I remember "The Zen of Screaming" back in the day. This chick is OG for sure.
I love how she said she was a hippy back in the day and lost the way. Then said we were the ones that understood it and knew the way. Love the paradoxical comparisons. The nu gen hippies 🤘✌️🌈
Love what she said about metal being real. Totally agree!
Caleb has been screaming wrongfully? Even when he was in Attack Attack?
His lows were fine to do live for AA, but his vocal frys and screams were just destroying his voice in Beartooth.
I randomly bumped into her before the Eluveitie show in NYC two days ago and said hi. So cool and unexpected, she seemed really sweet. Just from her presence you can tell that she's loved and respected by not only the artists but by their fans as well.
oh my god this is cool how about you whiny babies stop fighting about what's metal and what's not it's just a cool video it's not that deep
SingingIs NotMyThing You're the realist...marry me? Im short but not bad looking i promise
0:14 wait she worked with movements? I love Patrick Miranda holy shit his screams feel so organic and natural I love them
What song is he performing in the video?
@@RaimundN52 Worst Wishes!
@@drinalco Thank you for this reply. And Thank you @Rayski for asking.
I was just wondering if there were any metal vocal trainers.....BOOM! This lady is awesome!!
hearing her passion for these people and this genre of music which is often looked down upon or completely misunderstood is absolutely beautiful
The zen of screaming! I remember her dvd!
Only guy who knew how to scream from birth, never lost his voice, never lost a falsetto note. MIKE PATTON!

Kirk hammett knows dae wahhh
Disturbed is my favourite band I can’t understand their words and the music and the messages in them are timeless.
People are still on the core isn't metal argument? Christ
Ethan Carpenter You seem to lack any knowledge about music genres.
You know what other metal genre was a fusion of punk and metal?
Thrash metal.
Hardcore punk+ speed metal/NWOBHM= thrash metal.
I could also throw grindcore onto the argument of metal and punk infused genres, but grindcore has never really been a genre I've read about.
Ethan Carpenter And you have way too much time on your hands.
I got so excited when I saw Caleb and Matty!!
Salem Vale same
"it's really came from the heart" coach said 🤘🤘🤘
Some context for anyone who isn’t a metal musician. Melissa Cross is the most respected vocal coach in metal by a pretty significant margin. She was already a legend back when i was on the circuit 10-15 years ago. I remember singers on tours doing various exercises backstage, talking about her tapes, etc.
