Not certain about the points made but ,if anyone else trying to find out how to sing high notes loudly try Proutklarton Awaken Wish Plan (just google it )? It is a great one off guide for discovering how to become a better singer without the normal expense. Ive heard some amazing things about it and my neighbor got excellent success with it.
I love how vocal coaches can shamelessly make all these strange noises that would be super embarrassing for normal people, all for the purpose of trying to help others better themselves. I love and respect that kinda stuff. Thank you for the video 🎼
@@lostalone9320 100%. great words of wisdom. one thing i talk about all the time is how peoples' performance is/can be hindered by insecurity. you see it when the music stops, and the vocalist is singing alone. there's a certain insecurity that creeps in when you can *really* hear yourself, and you're the only thing everyone else is hearing in that moment. specifically in younger vocalists this happens. when it comes to screaming, there's obviously a bunch of technique(s) included, but people who want to scream can't even get themselves to. they're like "i've tried! i just can't do it. my body can't produce those sounds". my theory is that most of the time this is due to mental barriers, and not being able to overcome the insecurity of hearing yourself scream for the first time, or whatever. knaw mean? just a couple things i've noticed, even back when i was really young. i sing and scream *all the time* , but when it comes to recording myself (or other people hearing me), if the music isn't loud enough in my headset, i find myself really struggling to give/perform at 100%. there are many things like this that i battle as a "young vocalist", and they're just things i need to *actually* start working on. doesn't help that the only way i allow people to hear my voice is through doing vocal covers. i technically haven't even "found my own voice" yet because i've yet to write my music. sorry for the novel! hahaha. just wanted to throw my couple pennies in there, and sometimes, once i get started, it's hard to stop XD. *if anybody has read this far, i hope you have a wonderful day :)
@@LT_Dangles_Music as a person who has been singing for 2 years I found that the biggest thing that held me back was precisely that: trying to avoid being heard. Once I started getting comfortable doing weird noises and making mistakes I started making huge progress. It's not easy, but if you can overcome that fear you can conquer the world. I thank myself everyday for being brave enough to do it. Performing in front of 100+ people and getting tons of compliments is one of the best feelings in the world
Lol I think some guys don't want to sing too high in the fear of "sounding gay" that they sing too mouthy. But they limit their range That way.. chris has helped me get rid of that fear too..because you can have a thickness to your voice in a higher range.
I love how you represent the "ugly" side of discovery. How you show the process of finding the sound first. It's a very realistic example and says directly, "Yeah, its going to sound bad, weird and you're going to screech for a while. But it has to happen." This really sets you apart from others that hand you scales and numerous other drills. You perform the journey and difficulty of discovery to prepare the viewer for this realistic kind of practice necessary to develop further into their voice. That's why I'm watching you now.
Dude!!! Since always I wanted to hit high notes but never thought I could actually do it. My falsettos were really high, but I never heard my actual voice with ressonance on a high pitch. There was a ceilling that I couldn't get pass. Doing what you showed us in this video made me do it. What I always thought was impossible just happened, thanks to you! I'm insanely grateful!! Almost cried when I heard myself produce a high note like that!
Same here.A bit shocked actually.I don’t have a beautiful voice,but I can hit some high notes I couldn’t do before,from this experiment.Hard to believe.lol.
It's a work in progress for me. Thanks to you I'm learning how to mix my voice. I get it sometimes and it's like oh wow now how did I do that? It's a really unusual feeling. The resonance from my chest voice in my head sometimes makes me feel kinda dizzy, like I've put my head inside a church bell and someone rang the bell. On one note in particular it's an interesting experience for sure.
Where have you been all my life??!! I have been trying to figure this stuff out for years, paid good money to teachers, spent hours practicing, and you just got me there in MINUTES!! I just have to relearn all my muscle memory I’ve built up in countless hours now....
It's pretty unbelievable how much FREE content there is for learning to sing or to make music in general. It's the greatest thing that came out of youtube
I have a masters degree in solo singing. I teach classical singing in a music high school and I teach popular songs (rock, pop...) in my private lessons in person or online. I got to say, I've watched a lot of vocal coaches and teachers online and, even though I hate to say it, but a lot of them don't know what they are talking about or teaching others. But you my friend know what you're doing, a lot of the things you teach I also tell my students and I'm glad that you encourage people to experiment with their voice, that's the only real way to improve, and not to be scared of sounding silly. I have much more experience learning languages than I have learning to sing. The being-afraid-of-sounding-stupid bit applies to language learning too, I know exactly what you mean. How did I manage to learn to speak seven languages? By stopping to care about how stupid I might sound to others, or rather, by assuming that I sound stupid and accepting that as being perfectly okay. As I progressed, the overwhelmingly positive feedback from native speakers of languages only reinforced my acceptance of sounding stupid, helping me to pick up speed in learning.
For the last year or 2 of becoming a self taught vocalist I was so disappointed in my progress and tone until I found your videos. Thank you so much for being generous and handing out very valuable information for FREE. You're amazing for helping us musicians who haven't found our voice yet. I'm getting closer now and I thank you a lot for that. Your videos are so helpful and productive.
I feel.im not as bright and my voice seems a little hoarse ..although it doesn't hurt. I'm kind of doing old grandpa Simpson voice but struggling to brightening or free it more. I'm making the right connection but it's a strained feeling like pooping .

The more I listen to great singers intently looking for what makes them sound great, the more I realize that it's pretty much about technique. You can actually hear it when you hear great singers speak. We always find their voices to be special but they sound so ordinary when they speak. That's because their voices are often much more ordinary than we believe them to be. A lot of what we attribute to their individual voices is really just technique. You can shape your voice, a bit as though it were a sculpture.
Your falsetto is better than mine. I have an amazing Chest voice. I am 80 years old. I started to have voice lessons about 1 year ago. I can sing (forever?) with my chest voice. I think my voice coach has given me this with exercises.
I have been unsuccessfully trying to sing for 20 years, and talking about the fry voice was game changing for me. Now I finally sound natural instead of like I am forcing something. Thank you!!
Chris, I can’t tell you how good it feels to finally figure out where my mixed voice is. I had found it without knowing it a few weeks ago, and today when I was watching this video I did what you said and found what I had been doing. What’s great about it too is that there seems to be some natural vocal fry in the sound of my mixed voice and it’s making it sound very powerful. Thank you for this, everything feels like it’s working well because of you.

Regarding sounding “too nasal”, I think M. Shadows of Avenged is a good example. If you’re familiar with their catalogue, you’ll know that the first two albums had abundant screaming, and both the singing and screaming sounded fairly different from the rest of their discography. After their second album, Shadows got vocal instruction from someone who had coached Axel Rose in the past, iirc. And the next album, their breakout album City of Evil, marked the most drastic vocal style change of the band’s history. Shadows was more nasally and more gritty, and frequently utilized his mixed voice to allow himself a greater range. And his mixed voice is VERY nasally. It’s clear that he had completely accepted that, in order to get the distortion and the mixed voice range and control that he wanted, he had to place his vocals in a very nasal space. At times, it’s almost cartoon-y how nasal his voice gets, but (in my opinion) it just works for the album because it’s controlled, deliberate, and consistent. The important second part of this story is that-although he was incredibly nasal on City of Evil-for their next album, like two years later, he had essentially *mastered* his mixed voice. He was able to sing those higher notes with tone and control and distortion equal quality to his chest voice. That album and the several years after it are when his voice was at its strongest; Self Titled, Live in the LBC (truly unreal vocal power here), and to a lesser extent, Nightmare. It seems clear to me that he had accepted that, in order to be the best singer he could be, he needed to strengthen his mixed voice starting in a gentler more nasal space, and then move to a more open tone as he became more skilled and his voice became stronger. So even if you sound “too nasal” at the beginning, it’s important to develop the vocal strength and coordination correctly, and allow your voice to become stronger.
Cover band musician here. I have to be honest that I hated singing before your videos. I tried to sing backing vocals and such but they were just disaster. With the help of your videos I have been able to discover the singer in me. Obviously I'm not a lead singer or anything like that. But still, you have taught me how to use my voice safely and how to discover the sounds from my body. I am more than grateful to you.
I am on week 2 of your singing course and can't believe how much more range I have from discovering my mixed voice from these videos and starting to learn proper technique from your course, I am no longer reaching for notes and songs I would strain to sing are now easy. Thank you Chris! I have watched so many videos, but this was the video where mix "clicked" for me. I think so at least, I am after all still learning and there is probably a lot I don't get yet. Especially how to use the fry to move into mix. That made me just get it, and I can already apply it (albeit poorly) to sing songs with high notes I had to really strain to get previously, or not reach at all. Really eye opening experience, and all for free.
EXCELLENT VIDEO!! I FINALLY discovered my mixed voice and used it! I sang burn from hamilton and i don't break anymore! my singing is smoother, more natural, i don't scream anymore! That was my first time using my mixed voice and I was so proud to use it for the first time!! the first video that ever helpled me with mixed voice! That's day 1 using my mixed voice so I don't master it at all but I can't wait to sing with mixed voice tomorrow. This video kinda changed my life, thank you!
You're a hero, never thought I could even hit the first notes from Immigrant Song but I did just following your explanations, it felt so weird and good having such a relaxed way of singing high
There are a number of exercises which help teach moving in and out of mixed voice and getting comfortable doing it...but this is the most practical explanation I have seen so far. Good job with describing the dictation of sounds to make it easier to hit the mix voice.
Awesome instruction Chris! 52 years have finally lead me to someone who teaches like you. I’ve had moments of “self discovery“ in past years which have improved my singing to a degree, always to have my enthusiasm for this new self discovery squashed by some vocal “guru” who inevitably would say to stay “in your range when singing or you’ll damage your voice”. Kudos to you for having the persistence, curiosity, and determination to not only develop your voice but teach others as well. Our own mind is the biggest limitation to what we can achieve with our voice.
I have watched dozens of videos on “mix” and heard numerous voice teachers and singer friends try to explain it, and none of them could present it in such an easy to understand way AND demonstrate how to find it. I thought it was another singing myth because I’ve found it so elusive. Thanks!
Thank you Chris! This actually helped me quite a bit! For a while I´ve been struggling with this technique. Then I just did quieter and softer in my high range and then tried doing what you showed in your belting video and boom there I was singing a high note pretty comfortably. I mean it doesn´t sound "good" but I´m getting there!

This video in particular changed my world today. It just, clicked and all of the sudden I can Foo Fighters, Guns 'n' Roses, White Lion, and Extreme almost effortlessly. I cannot thank you enough you have literally changed my life.
I am so glad that you used Robert Plant as your example on Mixed Voice. When I first got interested in hard rock/ metal singing as a teenager in the mid 80s, I was experimenting trying to sing Led Zeppelin songs and that is when I stumbled on to finding that Robert Plant had two different places that he was singing from, one for his mid-range and one for the higher range. It was like two different voices all together. I didn't have a name to all them (head voice/ chest voice), but by trying to imitate Robert Plant, I got that realization of how each voice felt and how to access them. It took much more experimentation to develop a mixed voice, which to this day I am not the best at bridging them. But Robert Plant was the singer that I was able to have the 'a-ha" moment that there was a separate head and chest voice and a combo mix of them both. This video really brought me back to that early realization and also made me reflect on Robert Plant's influence on rock music.

Thanks! This baritone could not get to head voice smoothly, but I could imitate Robert Plant. With that mix voice, I could transition to high mix and low mix seamlessly. I could now practice singing songs that I previously could not do.
I accidentally discovered this register in my own voice the other week. Haven’t yet managed to commit it to muscle memory but I’m really excited for the versatility I will achieve in the future! Thanks for putting it into context.
Tsukasa Love ABC i feel like I’ve made huge improvements in technique this last year. Becoming aware of what I’m actually doing inside my instrument has increased my range, bettered my tone and allowed me to start exploring things like vocal runs. I have sung a ton, all my life, from ren-folk to rock to opera tenor. I never had a mixed voice, then I found it occasionally the last few years singing rock-remote shows during Covid, but I couldn't duplicate it on demand. You just gave me that. Thank you. I am combining it with some "NG"-sound scales that help me maintain that consistent vocal positioning while I work on accuracy and working up through and back down out of mixed, or staying in a mixed feel down lower.
i’ve actually been experimenting a lot with my mixed voice lately and i think i’ve finally started to find it and my voice sounds so much better on higher notes than it did when i just pulled up my chest voice
My chest voice is so huge and resonant that it's like a black hole, making my transitions sound like a car wreck and making high notes harder to achieve. I''ve been working on bringing my mixed voice down to the lower notes. It's so hard, but I'm seeing great results, with a brighter, louder tone and bigger range. Your video reminds me to use vocal fry to get it done.

Chris is a master of different techniques and places in his voice, he is almost a few voices in one, axl rose would be simular, but i like chris tone, power and openness far more.
So what I learned from this is that I already know how to use my mixed voice for the high notes but need to learn it in my chest register, great vid the examples really help

I learned how to use the vocal fry, mixed voice and all that stuff thanks to your tutorials. This is freaking amazing, I totally didn't know this feels this simple singing high notes. Literally today I sang a full chorus of some song that was with high notes and did it absolutely without any tension.. Of course I practiced so long before but today my voice finally adapted to it and now i do it automatically. And it didn't hurt my voice at all.. This felt so freaking amazing realizing that I'm here now

I love having discovered this channel and finding out all these names and terms. I'm self taught and I remember the day I discovered what I guess I now know to be my "mixed voice" it completely blew me away. I didn't understand exactly what I was doing or how I was achieving it, but suddenly I find I have a vocal range of 3.58 octaves and I'm just floored xD Mixed voice. The more you know.

Thank you for analyzing these two vocalists. Love em to bits, and I could always do a decent Robert Plant type of technique but never liked the sound. Didn't know what he does and what Chris did were similar. I guess I have to work more with that sound until I get it to a place where I can enjoy listening to it.
for a while i kinda knew how to access my mixed voice but it never felt very consistent and i couldn't exactly figure out what i was doing to make the sound. this was an absolute big help on figuring out how to make it much more consistent. thank you Chris!!
For anyone who just tried this, and didn't manage to produce mixed voice, it took me (amateurish tenor) about a month to get to a point, where I was like "yeah, that sort of sounds like what I hear online". Keep trying, you will succeed eventually.

It's a work in progress for me. Thanks to you I'm learning how to mix my voice. I get it sometimes and it's like oh wow now how did I do that? It's a really unusual feeling. The resonance from my chest voice in my head sometimes makes me feel kinda dizzy, like I've put my head inside a church bell and someone rang the bell. On one note in particular it's an interesting experience for sure.

It's pretty unbelievable how much FREE content there is for learning to sing or to make music in general. It's the greatest thing that came out of youtube
I have a masters degree in solo singing. I teach classical singing in a music high school and I teach popular songs (rock, pop...) in my private lessons in person or online. I got to say, I've watched a lot of vocal coaches and teachers online and, even though I hate to say it, but a lot of them don't know what they are talking about or teaching others. But you my friend know what you're doing, a lot of the things you teach I also tell my students and I'm glad that you encourage people to experiment with their voice, that's the only real way to improve, and not to be scared of sounding silly.

Who else would you recommend for singing?
I have much more experience learning languages than I have learning to sing. The being-afraid-of-sounding-stupid bit applies to language learning too, I know exactly what you mean. How did I manage to learn to speak seven languages? By stopping to care about how stupid I might sound to others, or rather, by assuming that I sound stupid and accepting that as being perfectly okay. As I progressed, the overwhelmingly positive feedback from native speakers of languages only reinforced my acceptance of sounding stupid, helping me to pick up speed in learning.
For the last year or 2 of becoming a self taught vocalist I was so disappointed in my progress and tone until I found your videos. Thank you so much for being generous and handing out very valuable information for FREE. You're amazing for helping us musicians who haven't found our voice yet. I'm getting closer now and I thank you a lot for that. Your videos are so helpful and productive.
This is GOLD. Just remember to be careful when experimenting and change your technique if you feel you're forcing it.
I feel.im not as bright and my voice seems a little hoarse ..although it doesn't hurt. I'm kind of doing old grandpa Simpson voice but struggling to brightening or free it more.

The more I listen to great singers intently looking for what makes them sound great, the more I realize that it's pretty much about technique. You can actually hear it when you hear great singers speak. We always find their voices to be special but they sound so ordinary when they speak. That's because their voices are often much more ordinary than we believe them to be. A lot of what we attribute to their individual voices is really just technique. You can shape your voice, a bit as though it were a sculpture.

Your falsetto is better than mine. I have an amazing Chest voice. I am 80 years old. I started to have voice lessons about 1 year ago. I can sing (forever?) with my chest voice. I think my voice coach has given me this with exercises.

I had found it without knowing it a few weeks ago, and today when I was watching this video I did what you said and found what I had been doing. What’s great about it too is that there seems to be some natural vocal fry in the sound of my mixed voice and it’s making it sound very powerful. This totally made sense to me, and I'm sure my neighbors enjoyed the sounds coming from my side of the shared wall! Chris is a great teacher.
Regarding sounding “too nasal”, I think M. Shadows of Avenged is a good example.
If you’re familiar with their catalogue, you’ll know that the first two albums had abundant screaming, and both the singing and screaming sounded fairly different from the rest of their discography.
After their second album, Shadows got vocal instruction from someone who had coached Axel Rose in the past, iirc. And the next album, their breakout album City of Evil, marked the most drastic vocal style change of the band’s history. Shadows was more nasally and more gritty, and frequently utilized his mixed voice to allow himself a greater range. And his mixed voice is VERY nasally. It’s clear that he had completely accepted that, in order to get the distortion and the mixed voice range and control that he wanted, he had to place his vocals in a very nasal space. At times, it’s almost cartoon-y how nasal his voice gets, but (in my opinion) it just works for the album because it’s controlled, deliberate, and consistent.
The important second part of this story is that-although he was incredibly nasal on City of Evil-for their next album, like two years later, he had essentially *mastered* his mixed voice. He was able to sing those higher notes with tone and control and distortion equal quality to his chest voice. That album and the several years after it are when his voice was at its strongest; Self Titled, Live in the LBC (truly unreal vocal power here), and to a lesser extent, Nightmare. It seems clear to me that he had accepted that, in order to be the best singer he could be, he needed to strengthen his mixed voice starting in a gentler more nasal space, and then move to a more open tone as he became more skilled and his voice became stronger.
So even if you sound “too nasal” at the beginning, it’s important to develop the vocal strength and coordination correctly, and allow your voice to become stronger.
Cover band musician here. I have to be honest that I hated singing before your videos. I tried to sing backing vocals and such but they were just disaster. With the help of your videos I have been able to discover the singer in me. Obviously I'm not a lead singer or anything like that. But still, you have taught me how to use my voice safely and how to discover the sounds from my body. I am more than grateful to you.
I am on week 2 of your singing course and can't believe how much more range I have from discovering my mixed voice from these videos and starting to learn proper technique from your course, I am no longer reaching for notes and songs I would strain to sing are now easy. Thank you so much, I'm excited to improve even more by week 12!

Thank you Chris! I have watched so many videos, but this was the video where mix "clicked" for me. I think so at least, I am after all still learning and there is probably a lot I don't get yet. Especially how to use the fry to move into mix. That made me just get it, and I can already apply it (albeit poorly) to sing songs with high notes I had to really strain to get previously, or not reach at all. Really eye opening experience, and all for free.
EXCELLENT VIDEO!! I FINALLY discovered my mixed voice and used it! I sang burn from hamilton and i don't break anymore! my singing is smoother, more natural, i don't scream anymore! That was my first time using my mixed voice and I was so proud to use it for the first time!! the first video that ever helpled me with mixed voice! That's day 1 using my mixed voice so I don't master it at all but I can't wait to sing with mixed voice tomorrow. This video kinda changed my life, thank you!
You're a hero, never thought I could even hit the first notes from Immigrant Song but I did just following your explanations, it felt so weird and good having such a relaxed way of singing high
There are a number of exercises which help teach moving in and out of mixed voice and getting comfortable doing it...but this is the most practical explanation I have seen so far. Good job with describing the dictation of sounds to make it easier to hit the mix voice.

Awesome instruction Chris! 52 years have finally lead me to someone who teaches like you. I’ve had moments of “self discovery“ in past years which have improved my singing to a degree, always to have my enthusiasm for this new self discovery squashed by some vocal “guru” who inevitably would say to stay “in your range when singing or you’ll damage your voice”. Kudos to you for having the persistence, curiosity, and determination to not only develop your voice but teach others as well. Our own mind is the biggest limitation to what we can achieve with our voice.

Thank you Chris! This actually helped me quite a bit! For a while I´ve been struggling with this technique. Then I just did quieter and softer in my high range and then tried doing what you showed in your belting video and boom there I was singing a high note pretty comfortably. I mean it doesn´t sound "good" but I´m getting there!

I am so glad that you used Robert Plant as your example on Mixed Voice. When I first got interested in hard rock/ metal singing as a teenager in the mid 80s, I was experimenting trying to sing Led Zeppelin songs and that is when I stumbled on to finding that Robert Plant had two different places that he was singing from, one for his mid-range and one for the higher range. It was like two different voices all together. I didn't have a name to all them (head voice/ chest voice), but by trying to imitate Robert Plant, I got that realization of how each voice felt and how to access them. It took much more experimentation to develop a mixed voice, which to this day I am not the best at bridging them. But Robert Plant was the singer that I was able to have the 'a-ha" moment that there was a separate head and chest voice and a combo mix of them both. This video really brought me back to that early realization and also made me reflect on Robert Plant's influence on rock music.
Ya Plant was huge for me too... but that "Little Joe" moment for me with Cornell... That's when my head exploded!!

Thanks! This baritone could not get to head voice smoothly, but I could imitate Robert Plant. With that mix voice, I could transition to high mix and low mix seamlessly. I could now practice singing songs that I previously could not do.

I have sung a ton, all my life, from ren-folk to rock to opera tenor. I never had a mixed voice, then I found it occasionally the last few years singing rock-remote shows during Covid, but I couldn't duplicate it on demand. You just gave me that. Thank you. I am combining it with some "NG"-sound scales that help me maintain that consistent vocal positioning while I work on accuracy and working up through and back down out of mixed, or staying in a mixed feel down lower.
i’ve actually been experimenting a lot with my mixed voice lately and i think i’ve finally started to find it and my voice sounds so much better on higher notes than it did when i just pulled up my chest voice

My chest voice is so huge and resonant that it's like a black hole, making my transitions sound like a car wreck and making high notes harder to achieve. I''ve been working on bringing my mixed voice down to the lower notes. It's so hard, but I'm seeing great results, with a brighter, louder tone and bigger range. Your video reminds me to use vocal fry to get it done.

Chris is a master of different techniques and places in his voice, he is almost a few voices in one, axl rose would be simular, but i like chris tone, power and openness far more.
I've watched so many videos on head and chest voice and never understood where they blend but this has given me great insights.
So what I learned from this is that I already know how to use my mixed voice for the high notes but need to learn it in my chest register, great vid the examples really help

I learned how to use the vocal fry, mixed voice and all that stuff thanks to your tutorials. This is freaking amazing, I totally didn't know this feels this simple singing high notes. Literally today I sang a full chorus of some song that was with high notes and did it absolutely without any tension.. Of course I practiced so long before but today my voice finally adapted to it and now i do it automatically. And it didn't hurt my voice at all.. This felt so freaking amazing realizing that I'm here now

I'm self taught and I remember the day I discovered what I guess I now know to be my "mixed voice" it completely blew me away. I didn't understand exactly what I was doing or how I was achieving it, but suddenly I find I have a vocal range of 3.58 octaves and I'm just floored xD

Thank you for analyzing these two vocalists. Love em to bits, and I could always do a decent Robert Plant type of technique but never liked the sound. Didn't know what he does and what Chris did were similar. I guess I have to work more with that sound until I get it to a place where I can enjoy listening to it.

For anyone who just tried this, and didn't manage to produce mixed voice, it took me (amateurish tenor) about a month to get to a point, where I was like "yeah, that sort of sounds like what I hear online". Keep trying, you will succeed eventually.
