Today Dustin and Glen go over the top diesel engines/trucks and rank them on a tier list! What’s your top diesel? Let us know down below and comment along as we go through them!! Enjoy!
#customoffsets #diesel #engines
Think I'm gunna have to tell Glen and Dustin to include the IDI and LML....
Lmm*
We did include the LMM, got cut from the video for some reason...
Yeah. If your going to put in Detroit from the 80s, gotta put in the 6.9 and 7.3 IDI
LML has a cp4 not a cp3
LML MASTER RACE
The person on the right is a man of culture
Facts
Bro the person on the left said the 6.0 is better than the 7.3 😂 I went straight to the comments 😂
Facts I couldn’t agree more I don’t like the guy on the left he’s a douche
I agree
Guy in black is cool guy in the red is on the spectrum
Glen was ranking diesels, Dustin was ranking aesthetics
3 vehicles that I would rate them S-tier: 12 Valve Cummins, 7.3L Powerstroke and the Cateye LBZ. The 3 American diesel kings !!
Diesel forever fam
I'd personally put the LB7 above the LBZ. Yeah they had slight injector issues which at this point in time are irrelevant to bring up but overall your 1st mod shouldn't be a delete.
Agree with this
6.9 idi ?
I have an lb7 and hit 205k and still had good injectors, ended up doing 150 overs for performance though.
Yessir
7.3L and 12v should’ve definitely been “S” tier
my top for modern diesel is the 6.7 powerstroke and for the old school type it's the 12v the both sounds nice , are reliable and are good engines( even if transmission where sh*t on the 12v)
12v maybe
Truer words were never spoken.
@@emilemenard6465 quantos hp??
For sure to much tech on the new ones they suck
That 7.3 doing a donut is nasty🤤
6.7
Was a 7.3 😂
5.9 Cummins and the 6.7 Powerstrokes are beautiful
6.7s are trash, turbo charger issues, injector leaks I could go on
@@tyson9155 mine has 230k no problems🤷🏻♂️
@@chandlernoble6041 must just be lucky
@@chandlernoble6041 170k 12 model no issues
@@tyson9155 trash is a bit dramatic
The reason no one swaps 7.3 is because of the way you have to program them to make power and the actual sise of the motor compared to the Cummins 7.3 is a A
Exactly right
See the guys that use to own a 6.0 know it's not hard to bulletproof a 6.0 you just can't be lazy with them
7.3s were not over-hyped, they had great transitions that were made to put up with diesel touqe
7.3 is a great engine. my dad has one with over 300k on the odometer
@@clay_d 300k damn!
yeah and they dont get that bad fuel economy. ours gets like 18 mpg
I got one with 350k miles but had the tranny replaced at 325. Great truck runs good
@@clay_d Yah same we have one for the ranch that got 360k miles and starts and runs like a charm. They'll last forever.
My dream truck is still a ‘97 obs crew cab long bed lifted to heaven with a 7.3
6.7 from ford or ram ?
My dad has a 4th gen 6.7 but I’d still choose a Ford 6.7 personally
Retoohs Mc. 6.7 from ford more reliable?
I haven’t had any experience with the ford 6.7 but with my experience with the ram 6.7, the fords have better transmissions, looks (in my opinion), and I love the sound of deleted power strokes.
i got one 🙋🏽♂️
The 7.3 with 400,000-500,000 miles still go for $10,000 plus! And that’s half their life since there are reports them hitting a million miles without any rebuilds or major maintenance! Definitely the most reliable in this segment
That’s cause they have like 180hp
@@bobbyb608 true
Agreed
@@bobbyb608 people always mention the 7.3 being underpowered but I have a 2000 model the absolutely moves its tuned and has 300k and it won't quit
@@shosaleen that’s what all the owners say, I’ve yet to be impressed though
The 6.4 powerstroke was a decent engine, my dad had one and it broke down 2 times because of DEF stuff. Then like 40-50k miles later after he deleted and tuned it. It decided it didn’t want to go any longer
Well your issue there is putting def in a truck without out it
Ha
I own and use a 94’ Ford F Super Duty Rollback. It has a 7.3 IDI with 190,000 miles. 5 speed manual. This thing has been the most reliable thing I’ve owned for towing! Only regular maintenance , no engine issues! Best diesel I’ve owned hands down!
Sounds like a trusty steed! 💪
@@CustomOffsetsTV She is! I had to get a buddy’s little Honda upstate, did 65 the whole way at 2500RPM, it didn’t even break a sweat! I did though XD, the A/C was not charged and had the windows down the whole time.
6.7 power strokes are the sauce 💪🏽
I'm a powerstroke guy myself. My dad had a 7.3, I have a 6.7.
My 6.4 got 224k no rebuild yet. Havent been hard on it but I have tiwed a good bit. Tuned, 90mm turbos, custom headers, straight pipe, ported heads. Serves me good!
My 6.4 that has 186k has had issues left and right sadly.
I’ve owned a 6.5. Best truck I’ve ever had. They don’t break down if you know how to operate them. They’re bullet proof with the ECM moved in front of the radiator and if you don’t shower down on them. They make their top horsepower and torque at lower rpms. No one gives em a real chance, but there is a reason why the Humvee is still powered by them all of these years later.
I find it ironic Dustin said the 7.3 didn't make great power without realizing that it still made more power than a 12 valve stock v stock.
Tuning and building is something that I am not considering here because both engines can be built to make good power, that is just the nature of tuning/building engines.
Also how Dustin said he didn't like the LML body but loved the L5P body, even though you can get an LML in the same body (hood/front clip update aside) as the L5P.
He's stupid and doesn't know what he's talking about, it's about the engines not appearances
He comes across to me like a city slicker who thinks trucks are cool
I've only ever owned an 04 Lb7, I love the cateye looks. The older Cummins body styles are nice though, honestly I like all diesels. (6.4 Powerstoke is my only exeption.)
💯💯💯💯
i have an lly with 420k miles on it no problems ever still on original trans its all in how u drive and maintain your truck that makes it a good truck
The 6.7 Powerstroke had some problems but they solved the problems in 2013 and added a better turbo in 2015.
I own a 20 12, 6.7 once you remove all the omissions bull crap it’s a lot more reliable the problem it had with spark plugs was relatively rare even then the 2012 67 had some issues, but still stupid reliable.
@@bt-zg4nk yh. But I thought diesels didn't have spark plugs.
@@terrificspokesman7416 true that Siri fucked me up glow plugs 😂
@@bt-zg4nk 😂😂. The emmisions stuff are one of the main problems. They literally choke the engines.
Glenn is approved for more video appearances 👌🏻
I’ve got a 1998 6.5 that I done a little bit of cleaning up somebody’s property for because they thought the engine was blow and it was the pushrod we fixed it and I haven’t had any problems I’ve had it for about ten years and it’s got 396000 kilometres on it and still going strong
The detroits were not meant to be massive tow pigs. They were marketed that way because "its a diesel". The 6.2 especially was an engine just for good mpg. Everything ive heard from the detroits is they were good motors just not good diesels in the sense that we know today.
I love my 6.5
I swamped a 7.3 idi n/a in my 1969 IH 1700 loadstar and it does well in comparison with the 345 gas that it came with
That’s sweet
lbz is literally gold. best pre emission pickup and it still competes with newer trucks when you tune them. i’ll never let mine go no matter how tempting the offers get lol
I have a LMM deleted of course, so it’s basically just like the LBZ. Great truck that pulls anything I put behind it.
6.5 was a god and I have one with over a million miles and doesn’t miss a beat if you just do a few parts your wrong
I don't understand why people hate on the Detroits, they are amazing engines but people don't know how to maintain them, also never put a turbo on a 6.2 or they will run away from you
I got a 94 Yukon with the 6.5 and has over 400k and still runs like a top
Easy to maintain? Yes. God tier? No.
no way. apparently they only run 100 miles at a time
The 6.5 is a slow turd. The reliability is moderate.
Glenn seems to have rated them most honestly maybe bit Cummins fan but Dustins Opinions is ridiculous, was he high? I hope he was high.
The 6.5 is a good engine tbh. My dad has it in his van (pfp). 230k miles all stock and runs great. Yes, they are not very fast, but they are reliable and are work horses
Until your starter snaps off and takes the block with it
@@quentins5692 hasnt happened yet 😂
That’s why you don’t take that starter bracket off like everyone does those starters need 3 points of contact
@@jessepond7224 yep, we only fix what is needed to fixed. we don't like to risk touching something we shouldn't and then make things worse just for more power or aftermarket parts
I have a 6 liter power stroke king ranch cclb
Bullet proofed and it's the best diesel I've ever owned
Sounds like a beast! 🤙
The key to buying a good 6.0 is
A. Not buying it from a young kid
B. Buy it from someone you know took good care of it
I was scared to death buying mine but it checked those two marks and it's been one of the best if not thee best truck I've ever owned. Regularly pull over 30,000lbs combined with zero issues.

2011 had the most problems with the 6.7 Powerstroke because it was the first year they produced it. The most common problem was the turbo failure but that didn't usually happen until around 150,000 miles.
You are right. My 2011 450 6.7 has 860k I’m going on 3rd turbo. But like any turbo it can last so long. My first turbo took a crap at 94k second one lasted to almost 370k. Last one was replaced at 700k. This truck for me has paid 20X back its value.
Mostly transport cross country under 20,000lbs max.
You’re spot on! I replaced mine at 160K miles. Other than that I’ve had zero issues with mine. It’s a one owner with 174K miles after just turning 12 years old. I absolutely love it! Best truck I’ve ever had by a long shot.
I love the 11-16 6.7s they look really good imo. I rank the 6.7 S tier with the 7.3
7.3 and 6.0 they sound so aggressive especially straight piped and stacked
IMAGINE ranking the most desirable 6.6 (LBZ) with the most unreliable 6.6 (LB7) in the same category 🤡
Put a lift pump on a lb7 it’s one of the most reliable trucks ever made. Injector issue doesn’t make it bad engine. It just doesn’t have a lift pump on it. Lb7 is a great engine.
when the 6.7 power stroke first came out in 2011 and early 2012 they called them back to tune them down because they had too much power
Also the 5.9 l 12 v Cummins can handle a lot of horsepower and torque just stock there built so strong like you could crank up the power and torque up a lot and still will last you over 300,000 miles I love that engine so much
I've been waiting for this kind of vid.. thank you guys
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for watching!🤘
The 6.0 had issues with the head studs lifting. They changed the pattern for the 6.4 fixing the issue. The issue with the 6.4 is the regen/dpf, egr, the pistons and the lift pump. Delete everything, run a tune with high volume lift pump and your injectors and egts will be happy. Got one here with 155 miles with a 150 tune. No issues except for the body falling off
I agree with the 6.0 getting a B.
They have great potential and easy to work on.
And I’m somewhat convinced if you leave it stock with just a egr delete they’ll be fine. I have a few coworkers and friends with over 400k miles on stock on theirs
I got 350 on mine
Had a buddy who’s grandpa baught a 6.4 straight of the dealership floor and put 400k miles on it, never had a problem and only ever did regular maintenance and it still ran great when he sold it last year, guess he just got lucky with it never have any of the major issues 6.4s are know for
7.3 is the best diesel motor ever made.
12v last longer and literally double the mpg…
I love glen we need more of him
Just sold my lbz yesterday, great truck but the breaks/steering sucked! Getting a new 2022 6.7 stroker baby! Best truck on the market
Cateyes: B (mainly because of the lb7), 6.7 cummins and L5P: S tier
7.3L is the most reliable before all the emission requirements, and 2014 or newer 6.7L Powerstroke is the most reliable all around truck, engine and transmission after the emission requirements came into effect with one caveat. You have to keep up on maintenance. I can’t emphasize that enough. I’ve had all the diesels just mentioned in the video, except the first gen Cummins and the only ones still in my possession are my 1997 OBS 7.3 Powerstroke and my 2014 6.7 scorpion Powerstroke. The 7.3 has 194k with no engine or tranny work needed other than regular maintenance with full synthetic oils and lubricants. I did however put a CTS3 with Hydra Chip in the OBS for better towing and daily driving power at 180k. The 6.7 has 245k with no engine or tranny work needed other than regular maintenance with full synthetic oils and lubricants. The 6.7 engine and tranny are completely stock. The reason I’d avoid the 2011-2013 6.7 Powerstrokes is because they had fuel rail issues that could grenade your engine and the upgraded fuel system wasn’t introduced until 2014.
Why sell the 12v and lbz??
I will say a single turbo 6.4 sounds so good tho
They kind of sound like a pissed off leaf blower.
Transmissions aren’t junk if you keep it stock tune or tow tune, I have a 08 with 13600 that towed it’s whole life and now I lifted it with 37s and it’s been great to me
13,600 miles ain’t very much😆😆 I know you mis typed but even 136,000 isn’t that much
My personal favorite engines are the 7.3 l powerstroke the 12 valve p pump Cummins
my block is cracked in my 6.2 diesel and has over 200000 miles and still runs great. my dad has a military truck and after sitting for 10 years he put a battery in it and it spun over twice and started they are slow but from what i’ve seen there reliable
12 valve is just downright the best if ya ask me with 2nd gen didn’t rust as must
The 6.2 detroit will run forever
I get so pumped when you guys post🔥🔥
Knowledge on trucks is that much and nothing in the know of diesels. All I know is I love how they sound. Bought a at4 gas cause I figured I’d do more research before deciding on what sort of diesel would be best for longevity/reliability
6.0 powerstroke is a for me it’s my dream truck they sound amazing there fun to drive and make amazing power
So unreliable tho
@@maxpeterson4427 not if you bulletproof them tho
@@jaxonwilson2183 any truck is reliable when you spend 5k-6k just to make it reliable lol

What about 7.3 idi and 6.9 powerstroke
I own a 15’ f350 drw and a 21’ f250. I’ve had a 19’ as well, the new 10spd trucks are insane. I’ve tried the l5ps and the cummins but based on power, looks, reliability, and drivability; these new fords win everytime
I feel like we need the girls to come to the next S to F ratings. That would be interesting.

I loved that they didn’t agree on much because I like the pro and con perspectives on each ranking! (LBZ S tier all the way tho)
Did this man rate the head-gasket trash can higher than the 7.3?!?!
And the 12 valve isnt overhyped???
Got a buddy with a 08 king ranch with the 6.4 and I laugh every time I pull him out with my 93 k1500 got 18,000 worth of land yacht but needs a $750 shitbox chevy to come save him
7.3 is the best that’s my dream truck they run forever and you can get a lot of power out of them if you tune them up but they can pull and look amazing sexiest truck ever especially the square body one

Yes million mile engines I have one myself
Can’t believe you skipped 5.9 commin-rails. Rip 🪦 and can’t have lb7, llly, lbz together
I think they counted both the p pump version and common rail version when they rated the 24 v
My LBZ dominates in reliability and power. Didn’t like my old power stroke all that much. Hated the tranny failure in my 24valve
I gotta Detroit gmc looks like hell but she’s a champ it has a aftermarket banks

Once I had all of them replaced at the same time haven’t had any more issues .
Love the 6.7 Powerstroke. No issues for me so far love the 2017 F250/350
Same here, plenty of power stock
7.3 powerstroke and LBZ duramax and the 24 valve Cummins are probably my favorite
But I also like the 6.9 that was in the older fords
I think the 7.3 power stroke is a S
The 7.3 power stroke is a beast I own one and it’s a 1999 f-250 7.3 power stroke diesel and I’ve had it for 8 years and it’s a beast it’s better than all the other crap trucks on there besides the 12 Val the 7.3 still better but 12 val is good
6.5 Detroit is strong, and you can make good power out of them with a few mods. A few of them are super cheap. There's a reason why they're still made.

The two best diesel motors aren’t the highest 5.9 and 7.3 also where the idi boys at got a 7.3 idi swapped in my 86 bullnose it’s a tank.
Can’t believe they mentioned the Detroit’s but not the international IDIs. I just put a 7.3 in an 86 bullnose as well lol. Original 6.9 blew up. Reg cab long box, 2wd, 80k miles. Cheap weekend cruiser.
15+ 6.7 Powerstrokes. Well rounded....reliable, quiet, quick, pulls well, decent (not great) fuel economy.
I agree with Glenn with the truck options!!!
Hey CustomOffsets watch out for the EPA, I hear they are getting serious
I can't help but vote for the 12 valve. but i am a cummins guy and thats mostly what we deal with in our shop so we love them.
Or for the 50$ do an EGR delete and don’t have to worry about that blowing out and destroying head gaskets or cracking heads
On a 6.0?
7.3’s usually don’t get bad mileage, I’ve owned 2 that were tuned and got 22 mpg while making good power
The 6.7 Powerstrokes also do sound good stock for a modern diesel. When you rev them they have a nice turbo whislete.
Lol 6.5s don’t die we have one on the farm has had a blown head gasket for 2.5 years for like 20000km and still starts good and runs good
6.9L IDI Ford F250 1983-87 is on my list as a good solid simple reliable diesel
He put a 6.0 over the 7.3 😂I call CAP
I prefer the 6.0 it's been a better truck. More power for less money
6.4 was the only one that could handle the twin turbo to a degree
