Woodturning - The Log That Bleeds Red!

- I'm Back! After a bit of time away from posting new original videos on the main channel I'm back and planning on uploading at a more regular pace.
In this video I take a large piece of Box Elder and turn it into a signature vase. I am really pleased with how this one turned out even though I would have liked to have seen some of that pinky/red wood in the final design, its a shame it seemingly stayed close to the pith. I do have a crotch piece from the same tree that was given to me by my arborist mate Connor so looking forward to turning that soon and seeing the grain! Stay tuned!
This vase was sanded to 3000 grit and finished with three coats of Danish oil and a coat of wood wax.
Let me know what you think!

Disclaimer:
My videos are for entertainment purposes only. Some of my techniques might not be the "best" or safest, so when using any tool or machinery always read and understand safety/manufacturers guidelines first.
And Yes, I'm aware that wearing gloves while woodturning is considered an unsafe practice. The gloves I wear are tight-fitting and don’t have any loose threads. I wear them for the protection of my skin. This is a risk that I am willing to take, however I am still very conscious of the potential danger and I do not touch any spinning parts of the lathe. DO NOT copy my actions if you feel unsafe doing so. - Хобби
Beautiful, and I LOVE the angled rim on this, it really makes it! Got to admit I was a little nervous when you stuck a gloved hand inside the spinning piece for sanding around the @6:40 mark; it showed err... true dedication, shall we say.
A great turn. Any idea what causes the red markings in the wood?
Beautiful ❤ I really like the slight angle to the rim.
Thank you very much Lisa! I hope you're well and looking forward to new videos coming soon 😉😊
Only red i see would be your own

Such beautiful grain, the only box elder I’ve removed while being in the industry.
Thanks for watching mate! Lets see how the next bit turns out 😉
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Beautiful vase the wood is lovely it has nice markings and it is amazingly the redness that comes out when its cut. Thank you for an awesome video take care x
I first thought it would be the biggest plug in the world. Nice work!
I recently cut a limb off a tree in my back yard and saw the red color inside. At the time I didn’t know what kind of wood it was but I kept it to turn later. Good to know that it is Box Elder.
What kind of wood is that? Very nice work.
Thanks for watching! This is Box elder, it's the first time I've ever had the pleasure to turn it 😄
Absolutely gorgeous! The simplicity of the design is outstanding in my book. I love it! ❤
Thank you very much, Beverly 😊
I hope you're excited for more projects coming soon!
Yes, I certainly am. I love your work!
That's absolutely gorgeous and I love the wood.❤❤❤😊
How about an occasional 180-degree shot of you, in your 'garb', sweating-out "Lenny" like SRV?
Where do you get your medallions for your signature made?
Thanks!!!
Clark

Thank you Stacey! I hope you're looking forward to lots more video videos coming soon! 😉😁
@@HarrySmithWoodturning absolutely!
That base you cut it off from looks interesting. Did you make something out of that part? Looks like it had the same red grain in it. Bleeding red in a piece of wood, what exactly does that mean?
Nice work. The top bugs the ever loving heck out of me but that is just me.
Aren't you worried about cracking, sinterklaas the pith is still in there?
Probably will over time. Looks like it was a fairly green log.
Couple things will help it to not.
1) it's sealed, so moisture won't change SO much as a result.
2) it's turned now, so for most of the log there isn't any pith, but there's still some structural tension in the wood keeping it together.
My guess is it warps a bit as it seasons, and isn't a true circle in six months. If it does crack, likely to be at the base
Awesome job
Thank you very much David! 😊😁
Very pretty result. Please stop cutting things toward yourself. 😅
Would love an inside view! Nice indeed.
Beautiful work harry as usual
Well done mate

Very nice A little out my comfort zone without a steady rest.
Beautiful Harry
Thank you Amber! I hope you're looking forward to all my new videos coming soon 😊
Love Flaming Box Elder.
Sweet
It looks a little like Piranha Pine.
First thing I was taught spindle turning was from largest to smallest diameter so you’re not pushing into the end grain. It goes easier and you get a better cut and finish.
and then other times you just have to go with the grain takes ya🦧

Harry , che spettacolo!
Thank you Roberto!! Much appreciated 😉😁
🆒😎👍
Nice piece, but everything in me is screaming the top isn’t level. Thats a me issue, but it’s really nice.
Thanks for watching! I do understand what you're saying. However, I really like to work with what I have, and this piece of wood was screaming to have a slanted top 😊
@@HarrySmithWoodturning 🤔👍🏼😅
@@HarrySmithWoodturningI like it.
Bleeds red?
Thanks for watching David! This is Box elder, did you see the base that was showing the pink/red stripes on the inside of the wood, also when I was turning you could see the red grain coming out 😊

Fantastic Piece.
Thank you John! I hope you're looking forward to lots more video videos coming soon! 😉😁
Вот она, вся мощь атомной энергетики. Можно создавать что угодно из чего угодно. На одних ветряках и солнечных батареях это будет сделать не реально 😎
Thanks for watching! My lathe is actually powered by a lot of solar 😉
You can power electrical items with wind turbines and solar panels buddy
Why didn't you show that the wood bled red? Click bait...shame on you
You didn't look hard enough Robert 🤓!! 🪵💉🩸🩸NOT Clickbait
He did show it.
Waste of big piece wood
That is very rude of you
I agree Karen. Some very rude people on here 😒
What would you have done with it? I am always interested in hearing what other turners would do 😊
I think he created a beautiful piece.
