  • welcome back, Fallout 4 Architects to another episode of Settlement Builds for Noobs. Today we're taking a look at the Coastal Cottage. This is a difficult place to build and a lot of inexperienced builders may find it extremely challenging without console commands or mods. for this site we attempted a new spin on our classic tower build, by implementing an open air atrium and greenhouse rooftop.

      That's how I kinda try to play the game. Like for example, I don't consider a settlement complete unless they have all their crops inside a greenhouse (boston winters are cold!). I also try to have at least one building that's completely sealed with walls/windows/doors, so the settlers have a place to escape the elements.
      Makes it more fun than plopping down a handful of tatos and sleeping bags.

    But fantastic build in any case. I always try to challenge myself to repair that cottage and end up with something a 5-year-old would build out of legos.

    I typically place a few mutfruit in the dirt inside the garage, & fill up the remaining space with doghouses. The dogs won't mind if their kennel has no roof, as long as they each have a place to shelter inside.
    I've been playing a long-running survival game, & slowly building up each site has been what kept me going. Each site has named dogs/wolves/mutant hounds from Erickson in Far Harbor. I try to sort them to fit a theme. Hangman's Alley has glowing wolves named Killer, Chewy, & Chase. The Castle has a wolf named Liberty & a dog named Patton.
    I also trap beasts to serve as extra defense. Tamed yao guai patrol the Visitor's Center. (Thankfully, do not feed the bears signs are constructible.) Starlight is home to a legendary radscorpion I've dubbed "Pokey". Tamed stingwings help protect Taffington Boathouse & Egret Tours Marina.
    One bit of advice, protect your beta wave emitter. I had one lose power during a raid & was suddenly facing hostile bears in addition to the raiders.

    I always make this Preston Garvey's home. Send him here and I never need to hear him complain about settlements needing help again.
    I typically make it into a watch post and supply depot for expeditions to Far Harbor, since it's the closest settlement to the Nakano Farm. It explains why I make the settlement so minimal, and why it deserves a Minuteman presence in the form of the most annoying companion.

    More like coastal fortress, lol. I've built some shell forms around the main house before but none quite like this. Pretty cool and space effective as well. Nice job. Like you I don't use this site much, if I do it's just as a personal base for that far corner of the map. And occasionally as a safehouse for the RR when working with them. Otherwise, coastal what?, oh yeah, that place..., So yeah, nice job on the build, and love that railing, by the way. That set up really nice and to my eye it looks structurally cool and fits with the overall industrial feel of the build itself.

      @richardkenan2891 Год назад +1

      Trying to build a good settlement like this is kind of a lost cause. This is by far the best settlement in Coastal Cottage I've ever seen, and it's still kind of janky. Coastal Cottage gains a ton from the Scrap Everything mod, since the buildings are close to 100% useless. Just ignoring them leaves an otherwise well made settlement look incredibly out of place. That's why I go with a minor outpost of some kind with only a half dozen settlers max. Not even a radio beacon, I just send settlers there from elsewhere.

  • @stevenpeterson8582
    @stevenpeterson8582 Год назад +6

    Regarding the water pumps on garden plots, you can combine that with the rug glitch, and you can also remove the garden plot after placing the water pump. Doing so would allow the concrete foundation of the pump to sink into the concrete floor which might help your head-canon - instead of a box of dirt going down, think of a concrete-encased well with pipes going down. And as far as head-canon on getting water into your greenhouse, the curved concrete wall and floor pieces raised on a pillar can be used to make something that looks like a water tower, and rug glitch a small water pump into the pillar as the tap.

  • @Rigel_Chiokis
    @Rigel_Chiokis Год назад +6

    One thing I've noticed about the videos of yours I've watched so far; you really like the concrete build set don't you? :) Actually, the connector on the fusion generator will poke through any solid floor, ceiling or roof as well. However, you need to connect the wire to it before you put that piece over it. This build makes good use of the available space. I've had a much easier time with this one since I discovered a) Scrap Everything and b) Place Everywhere. But this is well done without scrapping those buildings. The slopes are a p.i.t.a. too.

    I use several mods (which I've mentioned before) and Coastal Cottage eventually became a Frank Lloyd Wright inspired mansion mixed with Scotch Cap, a lighthouse the coast guard lost to a tsunami, with all hands, up in Alaska...
    I too left the garage alone...and the main structure has a deck that provides it with a roof cover over the original...
    The front porch remained untouched, sort of, I can only move it one time, and selecting anything touching it, made it vanish, and I couldn't remove the tall wavy grass...and had to establish my base floor just a hair over it...and move the original wall with a door and it's trim, once, and only once, lest it vanish...and NEVER select anything touching it, again...
    So, even with mods, this place is no walk in the park...due to paranoia...
    I put two elevators in, and had room for a secret passageway going between two floors, and storage areas around the bottom edges (where boulders come into the room)...along with a basement where the cave used to be, which houses a fusion generator, barely...
    It has a deck up top that is literally on the build limit line...and a hell of a view, like you said, which goes way past my draw distance 😃
    Mine is more of a private refuge, there are no settlers...it's away from conflict...a place by the sea to contemplate peace, rest, think, and watch the clouds go by...
    I liked the open inside area...and the greenhouse roof...along with finding out something new about water pumps...and, pretty much all the rest...
    It's good to see someone take a limitation, and make the best you can from it...😃

    I use mods, so this location isn't nearly as tough of a challenge to build on. That being said, I normally just use this settlement area as one of my getaway locations. A home for me, a few gardeners and security forces, but no major caravans or hub activity. I use that sinkhole as a root cellar or a power plant location. I'm a concrete builder too, since most of the base game wood/metal pieces all look like children with down syndrome built them, in other words, complete sh*t. I normally try to repair the work shed as much as possible, but Scrap Everything cleans up the floor and the home and truck sections nicely, a must have mod!

    My coastal cottage build start somewhere in the middle where there's just a little bit of somewhat level ground where you can put a staircase and close it put the door on it and then build up to where you have two levels of staircase and start building a building have inner walls countersunk so you can put guns all around it then use another set of stairs to levels high put a door on the level just above the level you just built so you can put another level of guns on top of that roof section then once you've got the two levels of stairs and you build four levels of building it's ungangly looking it would never work in real life but the laws of physics don't apply to the build in fallout 4 so I don't even try to work with the land and make it look like a normal building I just build it so it's functional and I know won't collapse because you can suspend four squares out in the middle of nowhere if you do it right

    The vault rails do have singular inner curves and straight rails you can use to remove those inner rail blocks. They have them for the atriums. They look good too.

    Also at the red rocket gas station I have a eight story building but you don't count the stories until you get above the red rocket gas stations roof line and I'm talking about the highest point not the lowest so there's like three levels of stairs you have to go before you even get into the building three stairwells and that's the only thing that supports the building

    I learned some useful stuff, but overall was more hoping the existing structures would be included. That’s what would lend uniqueness. I could take this build and plop it down on any open space, and simply adjust for terrain. It’s a great structure, especially the atrium, but it doesn’t scream Coastal Cottage.

    • @ellaisplotting
      @ellaisplotting Год назад +2

      ^^^^ this is by far the nicest build so far I've seen him do, and makes great use of the terrain- but I agree, popping a few bits and bobs into the houses, setting them up as a little marketplace or a covered campsite for traders, even just a hang out spot for settlers- integrating what remains is extra tricky here, but the payoff is worth it.
