As an editor, I have to say great job with the build and the video itself. You did a great job concisely explaining what was necessary and knowing when it's ok to just speed through a section on double speed. Have seen bigger channels with much less feel for the medium. For a settlement that everyone just wants to skip over and forget about, you really made a cool space out of it.
Multiple playthroughs, hours of frustration trying to fix the house using every trick I could think of and giving up. You, my friend made it look so easy....Thank you for sharing this.
Thank you and you’re welcome! It took me awhile to figure out how to do this - so I thought it was worth documenting and sharing. Hope it helps you in your game!
The house and garage are easily fixable. You do have to use the pillar "glitch" which is actually not a glitch, but rather a feature built into the game. The ball track placed next each other and group selected, or pillar "glitched" perfectly match the garage roof pitch, and look great. It also allows you to make a usable attic. I did fully repair the house and add a fallout shelter in the old bear cave under the house. The plane pieces fit perfectly. I also expanded and added a few more floors, lol. This is a great location, IMO...
I like this location too. I've seen builds that use the ball tracks as a roof for the garage (very clever!!). It has a good look too. A fallout shelter in the cave is a good idea - it makes use of one of the features for this location. It sounds like you did a lot of work and successfully renovated Coastal Cottage. Thanks for sharing your ideas!
After several play throughs I have never been happy with this location. I am going to do my best to replicate this and make it my characters home. Great job
Thank you! Ideally, I think this location is best suited for a player home - it gets a little crowded if you have too many settlers in a fairly small space. Glad that this inspired you - hope the build goes well!!
of the HUNDREDS of settlement vids i have watched over the years this is THE BEST i have ever watched. you were concise, the descriptions made sense, and i was immersed. thank you SOOOOO much for this! keep it up!!
Thank you! I appreciate your feedback and encouragement! It is good to know that the instructions weren't confusing and it kept your attention. I will utilize a similar technique in future videos.
I want to know how she gets such fine adjustment on the placements before the snap jobs. My works are too grainy on the placement control and I have to catch some snaps in my periphery from the side. Every now and then everything is centered up real nice (the snap focus), but it is usually off. Try wiring up 3600 color panels (after placing them to start with). If only I could address them individually at say 30 frames per second... I would reopen the drive in and show real, color movies! I just have to install an rPi emulator in the drive in display wall. And then create about 5GB of static, fast read memory out of some wasteland items. Then I could show all my settlers "The Fifth Element". Or wait... what would the best movie be to show them?
I agree snapping is a little wonky in the game. Sometimes I have to spin the tile to get it to snap, other times where you are standing and looking makes a difference. Some of the video is sped up too - so a lot of my fidgeting around is smother over.
I'm new to the game and I love the instructional format of this video. Also love the no glitch or mod since I try not to do either (i like my game's stability). Thank you for this!
Thanks for this i usually ignore this settlement because it's such a pain and glitches/mods atm i don't use. You have given me some ideas on this place now.
By the end of November 2015 I had confirmed that I was not a competent builder. If I tried what you just did People would say "I see what you did but what were you trying to do ? Whatever it was, you failed again." You need to never have those kinds of worries. Your efforts gave outstanding results. Well Done.
Thank you! I have a lot of hours in FO4 (almost 4500 now - yikes!!). A majority of the time was spent building- so I’ve have lots of practice. I’d be afraid to look at what I built in my early days of the game - I know it was pretty bad. So if it is something that interests you, I hope that you will give it a try again. Start small and build your confidence 😊
Thank you for this great video and you explained very well without unnecessary talking like other videos I’ve watched. Costal Cottage looks great and I will definitely give this build a try
Wow...I am blown away by your work at this settlement! I can never do anything to this place, but now...maybe I'll give it another try using some of your ideas! Great job!
Thank you! Since I know that this settlement is generally considered to be hopeless and can't be renovated without mods, I wanted to give it a try. It took a while to figure out how to get everything to work in vanilla (w DLCs) and without glitches - so I thought it was worth sharing. Hopefully you will try in your game - if you do, let me know how it goes!
Very nice! I dread trying to build here. Kevin Alibert has a solution that requires an extreme amount of glitching that works but I like this method better. I especially like the large deck that can be turned into an open-air market. Well done. Very creative.
Thank you! I totally understand dreading to build here! I think this has to be the least popular settlement in the game. I hope that this has given you ideas and inspiration to build here!
Thank you for the excellent step-by-step guide to constructing a usable settlement. I have watched many settlement building videos, but few if any have piqued my interest enough to bother trying to build a settlement and actually use settlers to provide some sort of entertainment value in the game. It turned out nearly perfect, and I attribute the error to myself as it is my first time trying to build anything useful. The shack balcony railing on the second floor north stairway would not snap into place. I imagine this is due to placement of the first tile that is placed on the second floor. I put a barn post in place of the shack balcony railing to prevent myself and settlers from walking off. Anyway, thank you again, and please keep creating these very useful guides.
You're welcome and thank you for the feedback! I'm glad that you gave it a try. If the railing that you couldn't snap is the one at the top of the scaffolding stairs, there is a build order issue that prevents the shack railing from snapping. How to resolve this is shown in the video starting at 19:50. Hope this helps!
Thank you for this amazing video! So detailed and precise. The music, your voice, the pacing is just perfect. I’m happy your video popped up in my algorithm! Liked and subscribed as well. I look forward to going through your other videos and for new settlement builds as well.
Thank you and welcome! I appreciate your feedback too! I only recently started to post no mod, no glitch tutorials and tours and plan to do more (my older videos are mainly my FO4 with Sim Settlements 2 City Plan Contest entries).
@@cryingcube2 I’ve enjoyed all the videos I’ve watched so far 😎 I don’t use mods or glitches in any games so I definitely look forward to more of these lol but yes of course I wish you nothing but happiness and success!
That is awesome i just came across this settlement and thought how can i build anything nice at this wonky settlement but u did a heck of a nice job im gonnna give this settlement a chance
Very well done. I appreciate the way you demonstrated and explained as you went along. I found a new way to fix this eyesore of a settlement, lol. Thank you very much.😅
Thank you very much, I had to improvise on some parts because i messed up on the first floor in the home but I fixed it. But I still had to improvise on some areas. Thank you very much, have a wonderful week, Merry Christmas and have a happy new year 🫡🍻
Thank you! And thanks for your comments. I appreciate the feedback. This was my first tutorial video and I think that I could have done a better job on trying to point out things along the way that might make it difficult (or impossible) to place something later (I've tried to improve that in my more recent videos). This might have avoided a few headaches but I'm glad that you were able to improvise along the way. Adding your own touches is always nice to do as well. I hope you have a wonderful week too - Merry Christmas and a Happy 2025 to you too 🥳🎉
@ you didn’t mess up i promise, i messed up on the first floor lol. Your video is actually my first ever build at a settlement, so thank you. I’m using the platform outside for crops because I didn’t know where else to put that part, the second floor is being used for beds / a hang out spot, don’t know that I’m doing with the first floor yet. I also had enough materials to do this build lol.
@Garcia1689 You're welcome! Glad that you are happy with how it turned out. Originally, I pictured the first floor as a workshop. I had it without doors and all of workbenches inside this area - but then I had more settlers than beds - so that idea was out. If you missed it, I also did a decorated no mods tour of the completed settlement. Might give you some ideas for your build. ruclips.net/video/VkmVmLwRNjI/видео.html
@ well that’s gonna have to be put on the waiting list for me love what you’ve done with the place lol. But yeah that’s gonna take some time for me gonna need more materials 🤣
@Garcia1689 LOL - I understand. I think my character that does the building didn't start building until level 60 or so. By then I had a nice stockpile of junk to use.
Man I love Fallout 4. Says a huge amount about the game when, years later, people are still building, innovating and making awesome tutorials (like this one) about the game. I'm guilty of being a bit of a lazy builder for most places in Fallout 4, as much as I love turning Sanctuary into a haven. I've gotta spend more time with other settlements. 😅
Thank you! I completely agree with you - almost 10 years later there is never a day that goes without new Fallout 4 content on You Tube! It has definitely kept my attention over the years. For all of the time that I have spent in the game, it may be the best money I have ever spent! My current no mods character has mostly stayed away from Sanctuary because I'm not really sure what to do with the houses without mods - I'm still thinking about it!!
You did a great job rebuilding. I've done something similar and found that I had to fill the hole as the settlers would get stuck under the house in the hole. I tried to use steps so they could escape but there ai was too dumb for the task.
Thank you! In the past I tried to use the hole under the house but found the same thing as you. It’s a unique feature and it makes sense to use it for something - but I never understood why Bethesda wouldn’t have designed it so that settlers can get both in and out of the hole.
I do something similar, but you have made a better job of the house bit! Coastal Cottage is such a good site if we take the time to work around it's....many problems.
Great tutorial! I just wish I have the patience to make everything snap properly; it’s just so annoying when you can’t place things where you want them. I just gave up building 🤷🏻♀️
Thank you! I understand your frustration with building! I've always built with mods just for that reason. Recently, I decided to try no mods to see what can be done with what the game allows - and it isn't easy! The game is a lot of fun even if you don't build - but maybe give it a try again!
on the second part of the deck out front, you use scaffolding, Could you have raised that up, and gone over the weeds? and if so, could the underside of the deck then be used for beds? I watched your beds covered parts 1 and 2, and seems like maybe that space could be used? I"m new to FO4, like 2 weeks into it new, and I LOVE the building part. I know a lot of people complain about the building mechanics, but in reality it's pretty flexible. And for the concrete part coming off the barn, could that bave been second story floors and then open underneath? I'm finding i'm getting 12-16 settlers at each locaton and running out of beds
Glad that you are enjoying building in FO4! You are very brave to take on Coastal Cottage with only 2 weeks in the game! It is (IMO) the most difficult settlement in the game! The scaffolding that is in front of the house porch should be able to be raised up and the area under the scaffolding could be used for beds. Either the wood floors or the scaffolding flooring will shelter the beds. For the concrete part coming off the barn, I think you are referring to the large wood deck that is next to the house and in front of the garage. Although there is space under there, it is very slopped and I don't know how easily you could make that into sleeping space (although it would be sheltered). As an alternative, you could build housing on the deck. There is plenty of room next to the garage (opposite side from the house). The house could extend back into the grassy area and I think it is kinda flat back there. Another idea would be to build a house near the rocky cliff area on the other side of the settlement. I think that area might be somewhat flat too. I did a video tour of this settlement completed (no mods or glitches too). Here is a link - that might give you a few ideas. I used the large deck for my marketplace but maybe you could use it for housing. ruclips.net/video/VkmVmLwRNjI/видео.html
There aren’t a lot of good furniture choices that came with the base game and DLCs. The Creation Club has a modern furniture add-on but shaker would be a better option. The modern furniture doesn’t fit my current building style.
I’m a bit confused @cryingcube2 your title says no mods, but at 6:42 there are title sets I have not seen on foundations. Are these Fromm creation club?
Yes - they are from the creation club. I own most of the creations that either gave me more building pieces or player homes. Unfortunately, a lot of the creation club items show up at the beginning of the build menus which means a lot of scrolling to get to the vanilla (and DLC) tiles.
i can fix the second floor of the house just fine using the trick from your Kingsport lighthouse video. the first floor with the huge hole is pure torture hell. i just can't get it right with whatever trick i have. whoever design this house really love to torture the players. weirdly enough there is a boat house nearby, with the mirelurk queen walking about, that's better choice as settlement.
I agree - it is IMO the worst settlement. The major problem that I found with the first floor of the house is collision with all of the debris that isn''t scrapable. It would have been nice if they would have made it less challenging because it is a nice location. I haven't tried the Kingsport Lighthouse trick on the second floor at Coastal Cottage - but I will have to do that - thanks for the idea!
@cryingcube2 Yeah, that! Those unscrapable debris are menace. Plus, how rare even ground in this settlement just making me want to quit. Tbh i let out heavy sigh in frustration when i first arrived at Cottage and getting worse when i checked around. Thank God there's the versatility of warehouse and barn floor to save the day 🤣. They can clip in some seems impossible place 🤣🤣

I understand- it is a frustrating place! The debris, rocks, uneven ground and the big storage crates add to it! I found that the concrete walls are pretty forgiving too and will glitch through some of the debris. Sometimes tiles will snap into place through the debris if it is snapping to a tile that has already been placed. Good luck hope it goes better for you!
I think it is more related to the settlers spawning in when the cell loads (similar to how they end up on the roofs - I think). They don't seem to be able to fall into the hole if it is covered though.
Great question! I'm referring to building techniques that you can use to place items or build things that the game normally won't allow. Skooled zone did a few good videos on glitches and how to do them. He also has a top 10 building glitches video (if you are interested) that you can find here: ruclips.net/video/skzJ0P94aY4/видео.html I'm definitely not opposed to using glitches but for this video series, I want to provide viewers techniques that they can use with just the tools that the game allows to create a great settlement.
It’s a pity that the game does not a have perk for repairing houses. First rank, plaster, floors and walls, second rank, roof, doors and windows, third rank gardens, and landscape, fourth rank, electrical repair of fridges, dispensers, etc. A Handyman perk!
That is an excellent idea! I would love it if we could make “real” repairs - landscaping is high on my list and to be able to make use of the many appliances that are all around the commonwealth is a great idea!
Lol! Thank you! I will have to go back and take a look at the railing (not sure which one). They were all placed the way that they would snap so I'm curious... Regarding the doors - in the real world, I think that exterior doors generally open inwards. When building in FO4, they go whichever way they fit!
You are correct - this build used materials from the Wasteland Workshop, Far Harbor and Contraptions Workshop DLCs. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. It was an oversight on my part to not include this information in the video. I listed the necessary DLCs in the description to hopeful help avoid confusion in the future ☺️
Yes - that is an effective way to position things without mods. I don't use console commands in the no mods no glitch series so that is Xbox and Playstation friendly.
Yes - no mods. This character didn't start building until around level 60 and this was the first full settlement that was built. I had a pretty good stockpile of building materials by then.
The barn floors are from the Far Harbor DLC. I listed the DLCs that I used in the description but overlooked stating it in the video. Sorry for the confusion.
I understand and can see your point. It does look a lot better finished. I have a tour of the finished settlement that you might like better. Here is a link if you want to check it out ruclips.net/video/VkmVmLwRNjI/видео.html
As an editor, I have to say great job with the build and the video itself. You did a great job concisely explaining what was necessary and knowing when it's ok to just speed through a section on double speed. Have seen bigger channels with much less feel for the medium.
I think I need a Shaker-style furniture and fittings mod.
Thank you!
@@Steve-H57 You’re welcome ☺️
you did Awesome!
Thank you!
i can fix the second floor of the house just fine using the trick from your Kingsport lighthouse video. the first floor with the huge hole is pure torture hell. i just can't get it right with whatever trick i have. whoever design this house really love to torture the players. weirdly enough there is a boat house nearby, with the mirelurk queen walking about, that's better choice as settlement.

The hole in the ground is somewhere where NPCs tend to be placed by the game.
Unfortunately, that does happen. If I am missing a settler - I know where I can find them!
@@cryingcube2 I was afraid of that, I was hoping your video meant they had fixed that but appearently not.
I think it is more related to the settlers spawning in when the cell loads (similar to how they end up on the roofs - I think). They don't seem to be able to fall into the hole if it is covered though.
What are "Glitches"? Do you mean places where a building is defying gravity?
Great question! I'm referring to building techniques that you can use to place items or build things that the game normally won't allow. Skooled zone did a few good videos on glitches and how to do them. He also has a top 10 building glitches video (if you are interested) that you can find here:
ruclips.net/video/skzJ0P94aY4/видео.html
I'm definitely not opposed to using glitches but for this video series, I want to provide viewers techniques that they can use with just the tools that the game allows to create a great settlement.
Awesome build 👍🏻
"The railing at the end is inside out"
Sorry that was my innner voice, ignore it 😅
"and doors should open outwards"
Shut up!
Lol! Thank you! I will have to go back and take a look at the railing (not sure which one). They were all placed the way that they would snap so I'm curious... Regarding the doors - in the real world, I think that exterior doors generally open inwards. When building in FO4, they go whichever way they fit!
wow great looking but notice that fallout 4 has some craping building you have to make something nice with all the paid for DLC
Thank you! I totally agree with you! The base game doesn't give you that much to work with!
This is workshop dlc isn't it. I don't have most of these items
You are correct - this build used materials from the Wasteland Workshop, Far Harbor and Contraptions Workshop DLCs. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. It was an oversight on my part to not include this information in the video. I listed the necessary DLCs in the description to hopeful help avoid confusion in the future ☺️
and remember, hit ~ to open console and modpos commands to line things up properly.
Yes - that is an effective way to position things without mods. I don't use console commands in the no mods no glitch series so that is Xbox and Playstation friendly.
💚💚💚
Thank you! I'm glad that you like it!
No mods: 😑
No glitches: 😲
lol! I know it isn't everyone's building style but it can be done!
No mods? Having 2500+ wood aint no mod?
Yes - no mods. This character didn't start building until around level 60 and this was the first full settlement that was built. I had a pretty good stockpile of building materials by then.
@@cryingcube2 respect!
😊
Barn floor are a mod play vanilla game has none of this stuff
The barn floors are from the Far Harbor DLC. I listed the DLCs that I used in the description but overlooked stating it in the video. Sorry for the confusion.
Looks horrible
I understand that it isn't everyone's build style but a good way to make it a usable settlement without mods or glitches.
@ I mean just the big terrace! But I understand it’s to build on it later. It’s all a bit uninspired. You know what I mean?
I understand and can see your point. It does look a lot better finished. I have a tour of the finished settlement that you might like better. Here is a link if you want to check it out
