  • On the heels of the latest batch of Large Format and Full-Frame Cinema Cameras to hit the market, our very own Josh Burrows lays out what you need to know about your switch from Super 35 to Full Frame cinematograpy.
    In the video, he covers: Sensor Size, Lens Coverage, Angle of View vs. Focal Length, with some comparison shots that reflect how to control for depth of field and angle of view between one sensor and another.

    Just learned about this topic over the past few days. I'm surprised to find that (from what I can tell) Nikon and even Canon don't make many if any Super 35mm (which is cropped compared with full frame for anyone learning) consumer grade cameras for cinematic use. So I've got to look more into Sony-type crop sensor cameras since they're cheaper for the ssme purpose.

    One question though - Doesn't a f/2.8 give you a more shallow DoF than a f/4?
    I thought to get the same DoF on a 35mm than that of a 24mm you would have to have it on something like a f/5.6... I'm confused.

  • @YeahWhiplash
    @YeahWhiplash 4 года назад

    Great breakdown, and just something I want to make sure I properly understand: the shallower depth of field you get from large format is due to using longer focal length lens in order to get an equivalent angle of view on a smaller sensor? There is nothing inherent about a large format frame that causes shallower depth of field? Also don't larger sensors generally handle low light better?

    • @Owlbot
      @Owlbot 4 года назад +3

      The DoF is the area that's in focus, not "how blurry the backround is", so yes it's due to using longer lenses to match angle of view (basically).
      In other words, if you're used to shooting a 35mm lens on a S35 sensor, you'll need around a 50mm lens to get the same frame (if you were to shoot from the same spot). But, since you're on the longer lens, at the same f-stop the background is going to be blurrier. If you just shoot about one stop down, the background will basically look the same and you won't be able to tell the difference. That's an artistic choice, though, not something that Full Frame exclusively gives you in the same way the opposite isn't a "feature" of S35.
      And yes a larger sensor does tend do better in low light. Also gives you more physical photosites which makes for a cleaner image. Generally.

    So which is better for professional video shoot like music videos short movies or documentaries ?

    • @StrayAngelFilmsInc
      @StrayAngelFilmsInc  3 года назад +1

      Now, this totally subjective but I'd say there really isn't better or worse, just different tools. For example, if you want to stay with wider shots and shallower DOF, FF would be better all things being the same. If you want to have tighter shots and deeper DOF, then S35 might be better. Lots of other trade offs to think about, one big thing I'd think about is the fact that there's a much wider variety of lenses that cover S35 sensors.

    I have a doubt. Birdman, For example was shot with a 18mm lens(zeiss master prime), but the camera was a Alexa M who has a super 35 sensor, so with the crop factor(1.5) it was shoting in 27mm?

    • @joshburrowsinc
      @joshburrowsinc 3 года назад

      So that lens is an 18mm and will always be an 18mm no matter what size sensor you put it on. It's just the angle of view that might change. So if you put that 18mm on a bigger sensor, you'll see more of the image and have a wider angle of view. That will look like a wider lens, like a 27mm or whatever but it'll still be an 18mm, just with a bigger image. Make sense?

    What about Medium Format?

    • @joshburrowsinc
      @joshburrowsinc 4 года назад +1

      Good question! Part of what confuses people is that still photography terms and cinematography terms can mean different things. Large format in film making is pretty much anything bigger than Super 35 (Alexa, Canon C300, etc.) Usually it corresponds to about a full frame sized sensor in still photography.
      Meanwhile, large format in still photography is way bigger, it's any imaging area (usually film) bigger than 4x5 inches. Then, smaller than that but bigger than full frame, is medium format.
      Hope that makes sense!

    sorry, after lang time use, the SONY fx9 , is not a bad camera, after all not at all :) Ican give you this advice. If your into broadcast, filmeing , maybe nature, with lot of daylight, the FX9 is shaper, and more clear than the CANON. its got higher resolution too, actually the c300, adn c70, hav only a 8.2 Mp sensor, and is soft ! I ordered the SONY FX6 , actually :) the fx9 har not the best latitude, som in film, dont underexpose, but still, in total, you can do a lot ! actually in post with the codec, and 10 bit, really. I grade quite heavy, in D. Resolve . And, I like the lense 28-134, that much, I will shot my next movie with it. If your going Cine Zoom, with the Canon ! you get broke, easily! :) but, good luck. They fixed a lot of the fimrware issues on teh fx9, so its not bad at all !
