Just for general information APS is for "Advanced Photo System" also known as Advantix film the film format that was the bridge (or pretended to be) between film and digital in a smaller size that had 3 variarions in with and one of those was "C" for classic format 3:2 that was 25.1x16.7 and that why crop sensor cameras are APS-C 😉

I HAVE SONY FX3, i have SIGMA 20 mm T1.5 (WITH THE SIGMA MC11 mount adapter as the lens is natively an EF lens) I use it in full frame, and APSC mode, you mean in this case it is better than a native 35 mm lens( a full frame lens) for video?

  • @keithspillett7312
    @keithspillett7312 5 лет назад +5

Love the video. As someone who HAS experience of shooting 35mm movie film, I'm always rather amused when people suggest you can only get cinematic depth of field by using full frame. The very 'filmic appearance' they're referring to was actually created using a film area equivalent to today's super 35 sensors ie a CROP frame format. Also, in movie film terms, we never referred to lenses by focal lengths, but by field of view, in other words, you would mount a lens that you knew gave you a 30°, 50°, 90° field of view, or whatever, irrespective of the focal length. Very fast primes would be used to achieve shallow depth of field, or, more usually, longer fast primes used at a distance.

Great video! But one thing I don't get: at 2:14 why is the height of a frame fixed? Why didn't they just make the camera and projector advance the film a shorter step for each frame, then you could pack 16:9 or even 2:1 at full density. Was there a mechanical reason that prevented it? It would require a different projector, maybe? Or because you'd have less film and hence less resolution per frame?

Right and Wrong in several places.
    1. Finally someone puts my lectures together and actually gets viewers! Well done!
    2. Super 35 is IMHO the ideal general purpose video sensor size and absolutely ideal for Documentaries. For all the reasons you mentioned. FF is lovely if you have time, are shooting a feature film, w/ a tight storyboard and AC on crew.
Interestingly, I discovered that M43 and even smaller sensors (1-2/3") rock my UCU and macro world in both movie and stills! You guessed it, innately greater DOF essential for keeping smaller/closer subjects in focus without exaggerated stopping down . That explains why smartphones are rocking our world.
The sweetness comes in when you own a larger sensor camera such as the Panasonic S1H, cause you get selective sensor cropping !

  • @JulianaeDouglas
    @JulianaeDouglas 5 лет назад

Nice video, but just a note that sensor size has nothing to do with shallow depth of field.
What you have to do is to compensate the field of view with a longer focal length (which will actually produce a shallower depth of field), or to get closer (which will also produce a shallower depth of field, but may also cause some perspective distortion)
I say this because I'm going the other way around (from photography to video) and I record videos with both my cropped sensor dslr (Nikon D7000) and my full frame (D750).
    Thanks for the vid!
    Cheers

A few Netflix shows have used full frame sensors and I’ve gotta say you can tell the difference between the full frame and super-35. The super 35 images look compressed (not a bad thing) and the full frame images have a 3D pop effect. I use both and enjoy both, though I do prefer the full frame aesthetics.

get a speedbooster, and use your new (or cheap old) FF lenses on your APS-C camera body.. I highly recommend it so you can have most of FF sensor quality image and FOV on APS-C digital camera. it's like having 35mm camera FOV and of course you got 1 Fstop more light.. which also kicks ass!

They're called perforations or perfs. 35mm still film is 8 perf horizontal, whereas 35mm motion picture film is 4 perfs vertical. In order to create widescreen, you can either cut off the top and bottom, use anamorphic lenses, or shoot super 35mm, which only uses 3 perfs on one side.

A cropped lens actually has a lower depth of field at the same focal length. It's just that moving back or going to a shorter focal length also raises the depth of field. Then you have to lower the aperture to compensate. 200mm/f2 on a full frame has the same effect has 100mm/f1 on a micro four thirds. The diameter of the lens opening actually ends up being the same.

Great video, with excellent explanations of the two formats. Basically, what is now described as APS-C crop is equivalent to 35mm movie film, and what us known as full frame is more like the old VistaVision. I tend to be rather amused by what I term as 'full frame snobs' who choose to forget that, in DSLR terms, APS-C was THE original digital format for quite some time, so full frame is actually more like the 70mm overblown cousin to cinema's 35mm🤔😏😀

3 factors affect depth of field: 1. Aperture, 2. Subject to Camera Distance and 3. Focal Length.
The sensor size by itself is not what affects the depth of field. Is the focal distance that needs to decrease to have an equivalent field of view on a full frame sensor as opposed to a smaller one.
For example: A 24mm lens on a full frame camera gives you a field of view of 24mm. If you take that same 24mm lens and mount it on an APS-C sensor (1.5x for this example) the field of view will be equivalent to a 36mm lens but the focal distance remains the same at 24mm, is the field of view that changed to an ‘equivalent’ of 36mm (as if you would be looking through a 36mm).
If you would actually use a 24mm equivalent on a APS-C sensor, 17mm would be the closest, to have the same field of view as a 24mm on a full frame sensor then only then only then the depth of field would be wider but this wouldn’t be due to the sensor size but because of the shorter focal length of 17mm.

Holey part is the sprocket holes. They can put audio data outside AND between the sprocket holes to maximise image size up to the holes, hence "super" 35. Non-super 35 left gap between image and holes for old style analog audio tracks and hence image was quite a bit smaller still.
There's also hard/soft matte and anamorphic but that's a whole other thing.

oh yes, that is exactly what I want to see. Also see a comparison with speedbooster on the M50 would be very interesting.

I have a question . Most people that are beginning with “movie making” often look around for the best body and buy a crapy lens. Tell me is it better to buy like a 70d and a 18-55mm lens, or get rid of the great af and touch screen, and for the same price get a 60d but with a 24mm f2.8 mm lens. Potato Jet whats better?

I would sign up on a course that: General practical guidelines on starting out as a filmmaker, including rules of thumb about lenses and camera setup. I know it may sound impossible to do a general course on such a massive content. BUT here is the thing, I think you can do it and perhaps one of very few that can. Look forward to see what you will come up with. I know it is a video from 2018 but still I think you would manage to make a classic course. No pressure.

Hi :-) First of, love your vid, nicely done :-) Little thing I wanted to point out around 5"18.... where you say you can't use a FF lense on a APS-C cam... I'm sure you know, but beginners don't: some FF (=full frame) lenses work well on APS-C cam... and here come the interesting part: you'll augment the "zoom" factor of the ff lens on the aps-c cam... Mount a FF lense 100mm on an aps-c, and you'll get a (my crop factor is 1,6) 100x1,6=160mm lens ... (and please, correct me if I'm wrong!!!) :-) Thanks again for sharing this!!!!!!

I like how APS C already crops the image so you can get "extra reach" out of telephoto lenses. Perfect for wildlife.

Yeah, and it’s somewhat exponentially to because the crop effect gets bigger and bigger with telephoto lenses. For example: 15mm=24mm but 100mm=160mm.

Hey Mr Potatoe, can I know which lense you are using on your current shooting on canon 80d right now? I try to find a lense that can capture enough background in crop sensor camera. Cheers & thanks!

Great explanation of the different sensor sizes. I had no idea what the difference was between full frame 35mm and super 35mm. Makes perfect sense now. Also, I didn't know that a lot of video cameras had the smaller super 35mm sensors. I just assumed the high end cinema cameras had huge sensors. Thanks, now I don't feel so bad shooting video on my ASP-C sensor :D.

3:41 only for Canon's APS-C, all other brands have a 1.5 crop factor. Normal APS-C is 18x24mm (if someone knows why Canon decided to go for 1.6 and a smaller sensor, I'm open especially since like Pentax, Sony, Nikon, Fuji... they use the same range of lenses... so a 18-55 on a Canon is a 29-88 when it's a 27-83mm for other brands)

I have an idea for an autofocus system,
a barcode like scanning laser up where the logo normally goes on a sony/canon/nikon full frame mirrorless or DSLR, the height of the laser sweep adjusts to match your focus point, and that little scanning octogon mirror can pan an infrared laser over that point hundreds of times per second(8 times per revolution) giving the camera an exact distance to focus on how far it has to go to get there(so it doesnt overshoot by much), and more importantly, which direction the subject has moved during filming(reducing focus hunting), sure you'd still need contrast focus to get it more accurate because lenses do change, 15m focus might be 16m on a hot day but still, knowing where the focus needs to be, instantly, and knowing of any changes instantly(and in which direction the lens needs to focus) will make focus happen much faster and more reliably, instead of the 50/50 focus hunting method that often includes a distracting overshoot(possibly two),. with real time data, i would say that this system might be able to replace phase detect autofocus, though to be able to work in direct sunlight i expect the laser to be too powerful to be safe. If the camera's sensor was used to identify the laser sweep, it could easily see that the data it is getting is for the focus point, just use an an IR cut electronic filter to make the IR laser not visible(an allow for IR photography from the factory), though using the main sensor might not be precise enough and a seperate IR sensor might be needed for exact timing. the time it takes the full sensor to refresh might only allow for measurement in several meters or even thousands of meteres, instead of inches/centimeters/decimeters for something dedicated to laser distance measuring

Sensor size doesn't affect depth of field, its the longer focal length when compared to smaller sensors. When the field of view is the same, so is the depth of field.

Shooting with a camera like the 80D, what are you doing about color? You don't have a flat profile like Canon Log, right? Do you color grade your videos? Thanks!

If you're into APSC, what do you think about the Fujifilm X-T3 ?
It's recently out, and it's been touted as the king of APSC for both photos and videos.
