Manfrotto makes a $20 spacer to go under that gear head, worth it to keep the full function of the bottom knob on that gear head. 4x5 is perfect for using filters..invest in some graduates…if your going to shoot film make it right when you shoot it! If you are shooting chrome find the time where your film starts to reciprocity fail..riding your exposures around that zone will make much more interesting skies…great start ..have fun with it.
I'm blown away by the dynamic range and details of that first shot. It's most probably a function of the medium used but still, I find it absolutely gorgeous.
I'm actually kinda blown away with the first picture, that is gorgeous! How you can captura that much detail and dynamic range through just guessing a minute of exposure astounds me.
As someone based in Glendale this was a welcome treat to see some sights I recognized! Definitely inspiring to see a new perspective on places I've seen for the better part of 5 years.
It’s so great to see you go out and just try something new, capture some frames that aren’t perfect and just experiment. Really gets me inspired to go out there and just shoot whatever!
I am really happy you’re working with Large Format again! I have a Wista 45D that I’ve been using for Many years, and I recently sold all my 35mm and and medium format cameras (including my Leica M3) and bought a beautiful 8x10 Wista and I couldn’t be happier! It’s definitely not for everyone but as someone who lives life rather slowly, large format is perfect for me.
A very real video showing what happens with film photography particularly 4x5. Years ago in my photo course I had to shoot 4x5 & recently I decided to give it a go again. It is a lot of work but very rewarding. I think the learning curve is quite large but definitely opens another dimension in photography. Not for the faint of heart. I'm certainly not ready for color it is Fomapan for me!
Ahh, the good old changing bag! Got to get the film notches on the correct side. Memories of trying to load damp 35mm film onto a damp spiral and then into the developing tank.. Infuriating! Stunning picture, btw.
Im a 35 and 120 shooter and out of the blue I just wondered what 4x5 in color would look like, Im glad I clicked on your video first, those were some really nice photos, keep'm coming.
Gosh. Love these videos so much. It’s so great seeing your process and thoughts and you actually take lovely photos which can be kinda rare with RUclips photography channels.
Great video, nice to see the 4x5! If you’re interested in LA freeways, you should check out Catherine Opie’s “Freeway” series! A different approach to the subject, she shot them in the mid-90s with a panoramic camera in B&W.
Great video, love the 4x5 stuff. I love when there is more talking about each frame and a longer process. Nick Carver is really good with that, cool to see you doing it too.
I really love these LF photographs! They turned out quite well. Especially the first one is awesome! Please do try shooting with a GFX. I personally very curious to see how you’ll utilize this camera for this kind of photography. I own GFX50R and currently shooting a documentary project on construction of a light railway train system in Ottawa 🇨🇦 along the local 417 highway.
There is nothing like a large format negative. I use a 8 x10 inch camera made for me. I always forget something and sometimes that's fun, guessing more than less for exposures and hoping you can see all planes of focus. Remember to place the dark cloth over the camera when the holder is in...esp. if waiting for a long time for exposure, there can be a light leak. Well done!
Great new topic to explore. It must be fun, and a challenge, to think up new things to do each video release. As a former film (we're talking 40 some years) and now digital only shooter, at least at the moment, the idea of trying your Fuji and this 4x5 for the same or similar shots in this potential project would really be of interest. Always great to see your posts! Cheers! ✌
I think your video shooting black and white 4x5 of the dude (Greg I think?) with the killer beard in NYC is the first thing I saw that made me want to shoot large format. It just looked so different. Nice to see you working back to it. Chill video per usual 🍻
I actually love that first shot with the light across the mountain range! Love these videos, been a long time subscriber and have had way too long a hiatus from film, inspired to go back
freeways are something i think about constantly as someone who lives in LA without a car lmao. city nerd is a great youtuber who has a lot of good videos on cars and public transit
Great video. It reminds me to be more considered in my shots. Shooting digital these days, I've grown used to the many frames per second shooting rates and think in some cases it actually makes my image making worse.
Been awhile since I got to watch a video. You seem very happy my man. First song after your intro sounded very Dilla btw 🤷♂️ love the vid dawg. Large format is exciting
I bought a medium format camera in goodwill, but I won’t be able to shoot on such film, because for me it’s an expensive pleasure. And if you send the device to William by mail? What do you think of this William?
The one thing I kind of dislike is that omnipresent haze, the kind I sort of associate with a California nowadays. I hate shooting when I see that haze. But damn, does 4x5 hold up ever well. While not as easy to use, these cameras absolutely hold up against some of the best Digital (single) images.
I love the new, more casual, style of your videos and also the more frequent uploads!
Love the “I don’t have my light meter and arrived later than I wanted” then straight heat photos.. great work Willem!

Exactly how did you measure this from a video?

having so much fun with this one, dude. ❤

I’m happy to be able to watch your RUclips video more frequently than before, surprised to see the details of 4×5 again. Beautiful photos as always!

Awesome images! Do continue this highway project! 4x5 gives such a unique look.

that first photo!! your first try after so many years was incredible - and no light meter ??? dang

love the start of this series! 4x5 perfectly captures all the intricate details
U don’t know how happy I am when I see a new video of urs on my home page 😂❤
Love that first shot! Excited for this new project, i was wanting to ask if you felt like working on something new and then this vid came along :)
I think your video shooting black and white 4x5 of the dude (Greg I think?) with the killer beard in NYC is the first thing I saw that made me want to shoot large format. It just looked so different.

Loving the content, genuinely one of my favourite youtubers right now, always puts me in a calm mood and your photos are amazing
Same! I was just thinking to myself how calming his videos are. Perfect for unwinding before bed.
freeways are something i think about constantly as someone who lives in LA without a car lmao. city nerd is a great youtuber who has a lot of good videos on cars and public transit
living a large format life vicariously through your video :)
Always exciting to see a new video notification pop up!
Awesome subject choice! Love the high energy and joy you have to get out and shoot! Nice captures! Love it!
man, these pictures are so interesting, so beauty
VERY eager to see more 4x5 from you. That format is so gorgeous
Totally loved the second shot, I though the light was spot on!
Love to see it! Nice to see these casual videos of just out having fun. Looking forward to seeing what comes about with this!
Please shoot more of LA. That whole city is gorgeous!
Willem went full Mario wahoo on this one, love to see it
Great video. It reminds me to be more considered in my shots. Shooting digital these days, I've grown used to the many frames per second shooting rates and think in some cases it actually makes my image making worse.
Love watching Large/Medium Format in Colour 📷👍
Thanks for the inspiration, stoked to see more 4x5 from you.
Really enjoy seeing the more experimental style of video, even if it means the photos we see aren't final. More to learn in these
Taking my new toyo 45a out tomorrow, never shot 4x5. Perfect timing for this video.
Love the light and composition of the last photo, shame about the city getting cropped though
What a beautiful photo! Congratulations and thank you!
The scene with a fridge shelf full of camera rollers made me smile :P
aaaah man the long exposure bridge shot turned out awesome!
I’ve been putting alot of time into my 4x5 cameras, 3 very different types. Linhof Technica 4, Pinhole, and a modified polaroid 95a land camera.
This is so freaking cool! I love your setup! 📸🎥👍🏻
the second image with the lightleak is actually much better I think :.)
I acutally really the concept of shooting freeways...you should continue!
Every new video from Willem in his studio, I'm just waiting for the bookshelf to collapse. Any day now.
I am looking forward to seeing more 4x5 photos in upcoming videos.
Been awhile since I got to watch a video. You seem very happy my man. First song after your intro sounded very Dilla btw 🤷♂️ love the vid dawg. Large format is exciting
Great video, always pleasing to watch!
this was awesome - excited to see this project as it progresses
I bought a medium format camera in goodwill, but I won’t be able to shoot on such film, because for me it’s an expensive pleasure. And if you send the device to William by mail? What do you think of this William?
Mooie film , wat een uitzicht en mooie beelden ❤️
Title idea: “405 on 4x5”
the vibes!!
Dude this video was sooo good
I'm surprised you don't have a light meter app on your phone
GFX all the way! Save that 🥖🍞 I’m going to guess that most of us enjoy your channel for the creative ride you take us on and the beautiful images ✨
That intro had me dead 😂😂😂 love that intro btw Will! 😅
I think this some of your best work!
Great video. I have yet to try color large format. I've been sticking with mono so I can process and print.
"Mono" can be wonderful!
Wow, those photos
any chance you will do a reprint of "On the Sunny Side of the Street"?
great looking shots
shat shutter snap cut was so enjoyable @2:56
Great stuff. It is and will always be 5 X 4...
So chill! Lov the vid
Bro this video has a new vibe of (and i hate to say that word) „cinematic“ ?!? 🥲 love it!!
It’s odd seeing will show emotions outright, I mess with it!
Great video Willem, and super shots...! Are you permanently in the US ?
More 4x5 please!
Do these 4X5 cameras come with the lens or is it just the body? The pictures look so damn good.
I need to pick up my 4x5 again
Large format somehow always looks good.
The one thing I kind of dislike is that omnipresent haze, the kind I sort of associate with a California nowadays. I hate shooting when I see that haze.

Love your videos man
can I ask where the hike in Glendale was? Would love to get that view.
Loved this!
Love it! What’s the name of your bag btw?
what camera backpack are you using? love your videos!
thanks for the video. which microphone do you use?
Have you thought about using photographic paper instead of film at least until you get used to using the camera?
Good for you!
Is that the intrepid camera system? If it is how is it? Do you like it?
more 4x5!
Smashing like hard!
can you tell me about the tripod setup? I need to know what to look for thx
uuyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy thats hot crisp shots papa
Could we have the first photo uploaded somewhere in hd to download it for wallpaper reasons?
sooooo beautiful!!!
Love it!
Hey you guys, could you help me out? What kinda camera is that? Is it a custom built one?
If i learned one thing from this video, i think it's leave early than you expect to get to the photo location😂
