Neighbor: Hello 911? There is a strange man taking pictures of my house and car with a stupidly big camera. The operator: Oh that's just Willem. He moved to LA recently. He's pretty chill.
once I took out my Mamiya AFD and one of the neighbors asked me what the heck i was doing? I told her Im taking pictures with a film Camera, she looked puzzled and asked me Why??? XD.
When Willem, Jason, Caleb, and Nick (and maybe my girl Chris B) are gonna meet on the same corner taking pictures this is going to be one hell of a spiderman meme moment.
Welcome to LA! I know you're new here, but Angelino Heights and Silver Lake are not the Eastside. I've lived here my entire life and currently live in Little Tokyo, which is near the real Eastside (Boyle Heights). It's really not as bad as it used to be, but has a lot of beautiful photo ops. I hope you enjoy your time here and hope to see you walking around my neighborhood in Little Tokyo sometime!
@@Iliya_sh72 east side (silver lake, koreatown, east hollywood) is still west of DTLA, but it's to differentiate itself from the west side (santa monica, culver city, etc.)
I resonated with so much that you were saying about feeling inspired by all the new surroundings and burning off a roll, I myself recently moved from Texas to Seattle and everywhere I drive I wanted to pull over because I see photo opportunity's everywhere
Man Isaiah came back to TDE, Cole just dropped some heat, and our boy Willem has returned to bless us with another video! It’s been a good week so far. Also enjoy LA! Place looks beautiful.
Willem, thank you! You motivated me to try something new and beautiful, to creat special things and memories. Also, knowing myself and telling people who i am without words. Your channel helps me a lot. As a beginner i learned a lot information from you. Content which you showing here is pure gold and your energy is indescribable. Keep going, you are so precious!
Welcome to LA!! LA is always sunny until sunset and even the overcast days are lovely. There is a huge different between East Los Angeles and Northeast LA. You’ll have fun exploring different parts of LA as they’re all unique in its own way.
This is some serious quality content here! I think videos about the photography process of making pictures are cruelly lacking on RUclips. Gear reviews are great, but we all know that photography, in the end, is not just about that. Great job Willem!
A technicallity - a sodium vapor lamp emits light at pretty much one single wavelength (589 nm), being the very defenition of monochromatic. The greyish look is exactly that, no other major colors should typically emerge when lit directly under a sodium lamp. That is, if there are no other light sources in the vicinity. And yeah, would really love to see you having some fun with bad flashes and grainydays...And I like the new "format" man!
If you like cities with many different pockets that all have their own vibe, you'd love Berlin. Every borough feels and looks totally different unique, which is part of what makes it so fun to photograph.
Hi Willem, I really appreciate the concept behind this series. It's nice to not have the focus on gear, or selling some piece of equipment as the focal point. Good on you for keeping it about the art. Speaking of which, I think the shot at 9:06 is stunning and one of your best. Definitely reminiscent of oil colours and a wonderful composition.
Nice! I got a Canon A1 recently and your videos have helped me out a lot. I'm more of a video guy so being able to hear from someone who know what they're doing is sooo helpful
Great video and some beautiful images too! I couldn’t think of anything better than wandering around the streets of California taking photo’s. I can’t wait for the next video Willem
I haven't been watching photography related vids for a while now since I've been struggling to find my drive and niche. This video really helped me and I always enjoy your videos. Thank you
Loving the chilled out vibe from your videos... Nice photos too, great to see you enjoy your photography. Love the medium format old school equipment too (I'm an old bloke so grew up on 35mm Kodachrome). How have I missed your channel before??
The lighting in southern California especially Los Angeles is because of the smog. "Southern California's persistent sea breeze blows emissions from cars, trucks and factories inland, where it bakes in the abundant heat and sunlight to form ozone pollution. The smog gets trapped against the mountains, while strong inversion layers keep it close to the ground where millions of people breathe" so yeah I got that off google. Our landscape here basically traps pollution really close to the ground which is why California has such strict emission laws/ environmental laws. The only good thing about the pollution is the lighting an hour before sunset and during sunset lol
Hey Willem, even though this video is now a year old, I still find myself coming back to it. It's a huge inspiration and I'm getting so many ideas for my first visit to LA (and US) this summer. Do you plan on doing more episodes of roll notes like this, just maybe in a different neighborhood? This is amazing and keep up with all of your great work.
Didn’t know you moved to LA. It’s cool to see you shoot where I live and see how you interpret It. You should check out the neighborhood of Los Feliz. Check out Shakespeare Bridge and the neighborhood it’s in. It’s a gem.
Hey Willem, love the video series concept. If you wind up continuing it down the line I hope you get to explore the really diverse neighbourhoods LA has like Little Tokyo, Historic Flipinotown, Little Ethiopia and more. It'd be really cool to see how the city's different areas look through a newcomers eyes. Much love.
Maybe step out of silver lake? There’s more to LA than silverlake. I recommend to you Burbank, Downey, Long Beach, Pasadena. Welcome to LA! It’s a beautiful city
Some 🔥 ordinary photos my brotha
Two Vernacular guys
I love when they flirt in the comments
@matthew What 🤣🤣🤣

That’s my 81 baby blue benz ha! Can confirm we saw him and were wondering what was up...

"Maybe it's the smog in the air" Talk about finding the silver lining.
It's definitely the smog diffusing the light 😂

"GOLDEN HOUR ANXIETY" that describes that feeling perfectly!! Been there before. Great video
Willem + 80's Mercedes - you can't find a better duo
80s Mamiya aswell 🤘
Kodak has got to sponsor you and send a pallet of Portra. Excited for the series, great video Willem!
Agreed!

bruh I just finished Vuhlandes' video and then Willem's video pops out.... sheeesshhh I'm being blessed today
Same here haha! 👌🏻👌🏻
It’s so strange cause both of them come from different worlds and I’m equally addicted to them both
sheeeeshhh!
When Willem, Jason, Caleb, and Nick (and maybe my girl Chris B) are gonna meet on the same corner taking pictures this is going to be one hell of a spiderman meme moment.
It was so nice running into you! Seeing your Mamiya in real life was like gold (: Glad you're enjoying LA
You should consider taking this series up to the Bay Area.
Minolta Gang
We absolutely will!
Yeah you’d love it up here, tons of beautiful houses and cars nestled up in charming neighborhoods.
And I’m excited to randomly bump into Willem and I’m always ready for it.
Now that you’re in LA, when are we getting a collab with grainydays and bad flashes? Would love to see all of your styles on the same subject.

Exactly, as someone from BH I was letdown, but definitely hope he ventures further out into actual East LA.
Just a note: "East Los Angeles" is a very different area than the East-Side (where you are) of Los Angeles.

What's the difference? Asking as someone who's never been there

Lovely start. So many channels don’t have the “diary feel” like this does . And you’re not banging on about the gear which is perfect.
*"Nice"- Willem*
The production quality is different bro 🔥 huge thumbs up putting in the extra effort 🙏🏼
I love this new series. 😍 reminds me of the beginning of your channel, it almost makes you sentimental. 😄

The quality of this series is insane !

Thank You Willem, much love & support from France ♥
Looks like this is going to be a great series. Loving it so far.
you know when Willem takes out a tripod everything gonna be fire

You're right! Los Angeles is a bowl and captures all the smog, that's why the light is softer.

Yes! I was really looking forward to when you settled in a bit after your move and started sharing your discovery of LA. ✌️

love seeing LA through your eyes, and not negative media. it's a beautiful place!

The process of shooting that Lexus LS400 at 5:23 is awesome. That's what I'm driving right now and it's hard not to shoot photos of it all the time.
There is just something about these photos that makes them look like a scene. They are so still
