We love Piaget here at T&H! BUT, their latest release has us scratching our heads and grinding our teeth. If you haven't heard, the brand just released their Piaget Polo 79 reissue, and WOW! Today, Christian sits down and discusses why Piaget failed, breaks down the Polo 79 reissue, and how everything about it and its launch is such a heartbreaking failure to the watch industry.

Christian, I know what you like. My sister is called Piaget, and she literally has a golden smile, thanks to her dentist. She's a genuine 70's vintage piece. She's totally available, and only for PRX money. Now that's an offer your going to struggle to refuse.

I agree with nearly all of this analysis, except (again, being the Vacheron nerd here) with the 222 price analysis. It’s only ~retail because a) they raised retail 20% to be closer to market price b) they are producing more to meet demand because VC corporate doesn’t want “waiting list” models.

Being an older gentleman I have a different perspective on that. Piaget was an amazing brand a few decades ago. It had great presence and was known as a jeweler but also a watch brand.
This is very important to understand Piaget’s business model.
They lost their way in the watch world (like many other brands) in the 1970’s. Richemont bought the name and rescued it.
Piaget is today, still mostly a jewelry company, not a watch company. I think that the few models that they manufacture are beautiful and worth a look. I do not expect them to produce a crazy new design (I will leave that to newer brands like MB&F, RM, FP Journe etc.).
Piaget is a reputable name with a long history of making beautiful objects (watch among them). Look at it this way and your opinion may change.
Anyway, it is never a failure when a person like you talks about the brand Michael. Your review is a win for the brand and I like the watch. Do I like the square version better; yes. However, I would not discard this model.

That Piaget Polo 79 is beautiful.. The chunky squared edges with a round dial is an amazing design. The 200g of brushed gold.. I'd say others should search for more photos online, he even mentions Hodinkee's review.. 👍 (except the 2 stock photos he shows over and over again here.. in same type of lighting 🙄) esp. ones in different lighting setups, daylight, etc. (like he seems to have no problem doing with the AP 12:24) Polo 79 looks awesome.

At current gold prices this watch costs the manufacturer over 16K dollars. That’s not even getting into the watch itself which has a highly decorated thin movement with a micro rotor. Too bad Piaget chose to make this a halo watch priced astronomically for a limited few rather than a viable option for the merely well to do but it’s delusional to think this watch cost no more than 5K to make

Piaget priced itself out of the market. At $15,000 with no discount exclusively at the boutique they would sell a tonne of these. When I saw the $74k price I immediately laughed and thought to myself forget it. Regardless of how beautiful this piece is, no one will pay $74k for it.

I really like the round version, the square version, really? However, you are right about their lack of a diverse watch portfolio, I keep seeing a new altiplano each year, it does get boring and last year was a new line of the polo on rubber strap. By the way, the polo is my dream watch to replace the Blue Patek Beta 21. May be Piaget focuses more on jewelery, I do not know what their numbers are.
Also, the fact the new Polo 79 looks boring, it means that in person, it will be awesome soon as you get close to the finishing.

I’m surprised at this take from a polo fan. This seems like he may have crafted an entire argument around the fact that he prefers the square case. The fact he opens up with that suggests what the real issue is.
I like the round one better but i was never going to own either anyway. And any price point they had was going to be massively higher than their vintage pieces. They aren’t unique to this phenomena either.
He’s forgotten more than I’ll probably ever know about watches, especially vintage. But this release doesn’t bother me one bit, and I’d love to own the green Polo perpetual calendar someday.

Piaget is so disappointing. They could be competing with Cartier for the elegant, classically-inspired market, pushing into the higher end with stone dials and precious metals and leaving the mid-range for Cartier. Instead they're a footnote while Cartier holds court. And those seeking out high end gaudiness will just stick with precious metal Rolex or AP.
