lapis lazuli was the finest and most expensive colour used in european renaissance paintings, they had to import it by ship from india or afghanistan, thats why they also called the colour made from it 'ultramarine', which is latin for 'beyond the sea'. lapis lazuli is also one of the reasons why Venice became so rich, back then most of the coulor traders were from Venice.
4:40 It's called egg tempera and it was what painters often used before oil paints took over in the 15th century. Egg tempera (not to be confused with regular tempera which is a kind of gouache or poster paint) was made with egg yolks, water and finely ground pigments - such as the mentioned lapis lazuli, which was used for the color best known as ultramarine. It is more translucent than oil paint so colors appear more brilliant because light reflects against the (usually white) primer. It is also highly lightfast, and it won't yellow over time like many oils do. Oils became popular as they take much longer to dry than egg tempera, which allowed painters to blend more tones, refine their technique and create lifelike paintings. Oils also spread more easily, can be mixed with mediums and thinners, which all makes it easier to work on very large paintings. Oils are also easily stored in soft metal tubes which was a simple invention but one that enabled the emergence of plein air painting and impressionism. There are masterpieces painted with both egg tempera and oils, but the latter remain the gold standard for the art of painting. Never mind me, I'm just a watch nerd... :)
If I remember right, it was the only dye that could be used for religious paintings, specifically the Virgin Mary, simply because it doesn't fade. That's where the phrase sacrebleu originated. Sacred blue.

I'm in the process of selling all my watches (half a dozen mid tier Seiko and 700+ (no that's not a typo) collectable G-Shocks - it's a long story) and have now bought my exit watch, a Hesalite Moonwatch. I couldn't be happier, it's not small but then the legibility is excellent and it doesn't look silly on my 7" wrist, but best of all I set it in Feb 2023 and it's still within one second. That's more accurate than any of those quartz G-Shocks. I've got some overseas travel coming up and I want to take it with me so I can keep it wound up, but at the same time I don't want to change it to the new location's time-zone because I don't want to pull out the crown and break the spell.
@@timtim2949 The sapphire sandwich comes with sapphire caseback and I live in a hot country and have found that glass display casebacks stick to my wrist like a limpet. The Speedy definitely fits your wrist Michael! Because of the asymmetric case, the outer bezel and the black dial, it really fits and feels like a 40mm. It’s also supposed to be a bigger than “normal” watch since it’s a tool watch. Don’t let the specs get in the way of a fantastic watch!!
Michael should check out the Speedmaster 38 w black dial. Size is great for thin wrist. Bezel is a bit thinner than the moon watch which brings more attention to the dial which I think looks even better.

You guys know that when you take a wrist shot, your forearm bones crossover and make your wrist look thinner. However, when your wrist is not turned toward your face, your forearm bones are side-by-side making your wrist look larger. Everyone’s wrist looks smaller when checking the time than hanging by your side.
My perfect 3 watch collection would be a Heuer Carrera chronograph on a racing strap. A Panerai Luminor. (I know they're not popular anymore but I think they're beautiful, with a lot more credibility than the previous inspiration of Rolex) And lastly a beautiful beater Seiko Presage with a zen garden dial.
Interesting choices. Mine would probably be: 1.) the Longines Heritage Classic Sector Dial as my evening/dress/business watch 2.) the Christopher Ward Twelve Titanium as my sports watch and 3) the Omega Speedmaster Professional as my chronograph
Agree with Christian, wrist shots always seem to make the watch look bigger. Now I hold the camera further back and then zoom to reduce paralax effect. Michael, why not the Speedy 38?

@5:12 Michael talks about the IWC Porsche Design Compass watches. There are a few corrections that need to be made. 1. There are 3 different models and they used different finishes and materials... and in the case of one has the moonphase. - The 1978 ref. 3510 was Aluminum with PVD, available in Black and Green PVD. The face was updated in 1982 to the 1980's IWC logo changes. - The 1985 ref. 3551 Compass with Moonphase. While the case was Aluminum again as with the 3510, the bracelet supplied used another material IWC and PD introduced with the ref. 3701 Chronograph - Delrin (a plastic) - The 1991 ref. 3511 Titan Compass. This model was presented in Titanium which the 2 brands made famous a decade prior with the ref.3700 Titan Chrono. The crown was moved from 3 to 4-o'clock. There is also some more finishing details that set it apart. 2. None of these have a "beacon" as Michael said. The only watches with such a device are the Breitling Emergency, Emergency Mission and Emergency II. At the time the Compass itself was "high tech" and special. 3. The lightest of the 3 is the 3511 because of the Titanium case and bracelet. The Moonphase (3551) because of the Delrin bracelet is the 2nd lightest, and the 3510 with all Aluminum construction is the heaviest. Unfortunately, the Delrin bracelets do not age well... and tended to fail and so many of the 3551's you see in the market are on replacement straps (mostly leather as the Delrins are OOP for many years). 4. Of the 3 there are differences in the flip mechanism to flip up the watch. The 3510 and 3551 just release the lock and it lifts a little and you raise it further. The 3511 upgraded this with a spring action that very satisfyingly "hops" up a bit. 5. All 3 are 39mm. Which I think will suit Michael's wrist well. The watch is a time-capsule of cool. In 2010, modern Porsche Design (no longer working with IWC) released a re-issue of the Compass as the Porsche Design Compass Heritage (ref. P6520) but now in 42mm... it is too big for the look. I think you will like the 3511 the most. The 3551 is very nice but hard to find with a good strap. Enjoy the hunt.
My 3 watches collection: Tank Louis(current version) JLC reverso with stain steel bracelet Santos 2 tones(quartz 90s vintage) Size matter to me, I got a small wrist 😅
Lapis lazuli was so expensive that the artists at the time reserved it for important figures. This is why the clothes of the Virgin Mary were often painted in blue.
$6.5k one watch: Two Tome Omega SMP Black ceramic and Rose (Sedna) gold on rubber strap. Or many other dial colors and if you like the steel strap (which I don’t love).
My three watch collection because I'm young and naive and think I'll ever be able to actually afford any of this at some point 1. Laurent Ferrier Grand sport tourbillon ref LCF041 2. Patek 5196 WG 3. Universal Geneve Nina Rindt (Blue face) Honourable mention to the FP journe Elegante any variant
IMHO a watch fits well if it wears well. Further, I suggest photos taken from elbow to extended finger tip to better judge the proportion of watch-to-body. Lastly, the Speedmaster Moonwatch is the ultimate tool watch, buy it and enjoy it regardless of anything else!

Honestly quite surprised that christooher ward is never mentioned in these videos, is it due to them only being accessible through their own website or you guys just aren't fans? About to get the C60 pro 300 bronze and already have the C60 lympstone which I love and think is amazing value for the price! What are other people's opinions?
There's no point to make a list... I like too many things. Probably a tantalum Journe, a Triple Split, the Zeitwerk, the Odyseus chrono, the Perpetual MB&F, the AK06 from Akrivia, AP RO with a manufacture caliber, the Hamatic M. Grossmann, the 222 VC, some Breguets, a couple Gronefelds, the chrono surely, the Kodo, there's Kari in there somewhere, and a DeBethune, Blancpain Bathy chrono on a 2020 SS bracelet, a discontinued GO PanoRetroGraph, a Minerva (Mont Blanc) chrono, I can continue...
3 piece collection, so start with three brands, then 3 different movements quartz, manual and auto, then you look at diver, chrono and dress and finally steel, platinum and gold. I’d go Sub 124060, Speedmaster 311.93.42.30.99.001 and a 18k Tank. Or a 2541.80, 228236 and a 18k Navitimer Cosmonaute.
Don’t love the Daytona as a 1 watch collection. I actually own the “light” steel model (though black dial) from this video but I rarely wear it because the dial legibility is actually terrible. No doubt it looks awesome, though…
I started one year ago with my first proper watch: the Speedy. This year I am looking at a dive watch for my 30th birthday. The Tudor Black Bay 58 in blue really is high on my list. I only buy a watch linked to special occasions. Long term I’m also looking at the Rolex Datejust green dial with the jubilee bracelet. Only point I’m slightly worried about: bit boring collection or not? On the other hand, I truly believe one should buy what one adores and for me it’s these three. Fourth one would be a Cartier Tank maybe but that’s for in a few years since we have to save up as well a bit of course.
My perfect 3 watch collection would be whittling my own collection down to 3 watches within the collection 1.) Rolex DJ36, blue-fluted motif dial (fluted bezel, jubilee bracelet) 2.) Cartier Tank Must Large on black strap 3.) IWC Pilot's Chronograph 41 (racing green dial, brown leather strap) Covers everything from sports to daily to dress, with a bracelet, brown strap, and black strap, and 3 different amazing dials with a patterned-sunburst blue, sunburst green, and the classic silvery-white opaline. And all indices are different with batons, Arabic numerals, and roman numerals.
You guys are fucking hilarious. I smile and laugh through your entire video(s), what a reprieve from the daily grind. Thanks for making me more informed on watches, the watch industry and laughing at the same time. Keep up the great work! Let me know if y'all ever go on tour ;)
I have 25 watches , 8 Luxury, but if i have ti choose only 3 for life: -Omega speedmaster hesalite -Rolex Yacth Master 42 Yellow Gold -Rolex Gmt Master 2 Pepsi
Michael should try the Speedmaster 38 w black dial. Size is great for a thin wrist. Bezel is a bit thinner than the moon watch which brings more attention to the dial which I think looks even better. I decided to go with the 38 despite thinking I could pull off the moonwatch. Very happy I did.
Man, I could not agree with you more on Cartier's refusal to make a standard model mechanical Tank. That has frustrated me for years. Would love to hear their rational for that strange decision, as it's what prevents me from buying a Tank, period. I'm just not going to pay mechanical money for a quartz, just because it says "Cartier." I want a watch, not jewelry.

Perfect collection for me at the moment: Speedy (either Pro or Reduced), Rolex Datejust 36, Tudor Black Bay 54. But What about a 1016? Or a vintage Grand Seiko? Or Polerouter? I guess a 10 piece collection would be ideal - until I had 10. Then more.
Great minds…. I have 2 of these 3 mentioned: speedy pro 3861 + date just 36 (blue motif dial) and love both. I’ve contemplated a BB54 for a diver that could serve as daily. I have a Wolbrook that I found interesting, obviously not as big of a name but fun factor is right up there. As the hosts mentioned here, a lot of times the fun watch hits above its weight class because it strikes the right chord. Perfect 3-watch collection? Maybe. But the eye wanders Cheers
Great minds definately do! I have had a Wolbrook. It was a great watch for the money. It was just 1 or 2 mm too big. I have the Speedy (which might also be too big for my 6,75” wrist - but it is so iconic) 😊
I love your guys as show I watched each and every one I feel like if you like your collection, you're not buying it for future investment, you're not buying it to sell in the future. It's something you want to enjoy in your life, and you know, you take it where that's it, because banged app against banged app, you're gonna use your watches. You can't buy a wrong collection because you would get what you want, but if you're young, kind of makes certain people look at you try to get a girl's attention, you no chances are relaxed as the best way to go, although I've just bought a brand new grand safe go and I'm waiting for it to get here I bought the. The blue frost is gorgeous, I love it. It's got the 36000 beat movement. I'm really excited about it, thank you guys.
Side note. One of the reasons the wrist shot is a problem is that usually your phone is a wide angle and blows up the case in comparison to your wrist. In contrast if you shoot the same watch and outfit from a long lens like … from a bit of a distance… all the sudden you can get a real sense of what the watch looks like on your person. That’s just me.
Off topic, but value any input. My friend and I bought stainless Rolex as tool watches. Any thoughts on why the brand didn't use the Cellini line as a vehicle for haute horology and offer Subs, Daytonas, Explorers, etc. only as task instruments. Also, any thoughts on Damasko and Junghans?

My 3 watches collection:
Tank Louis(current version)
JLC reverso with stain steel bracelet
Santos 2 tones(quartz 90s vintage)
Size matter to me, I got a small wrist 😅
Lapis lazuli was so expensive that the artists at the time reserved it for important figures. This is why the clothes of the Virgin Mary were often painted in blue.
$6.5k one watch: Two Tome Omega SMP Black ceramic and Rose (Sedna) gold on rubber strap. Or many other dial colors and if you like the steel strap (which I don’t love).
My three watch collection because I'm young and naive and think I'll ever be able to actually afford any of this at some point
1. Laurent Ferrier Grand sport tourbillon ref LCF041
2. Patek 5196 WG
3. Universal Geneve Nina Rindt (Blue face)
Honourable mention to the FP journe Elegante any variant
I actually laughed out loud watching an informative video on watch collecting. You guys are an awesome team. Love your videos.
Get the Targa and never look back! I've got a 911 Carrera and it never gets old. Had it since 2017.
I would enjoy more pictures of the watches mentioned so i dont have to google all the time :)
Great episode!
one watch collection from T&H , Rolex Sea dweller…. perfect one watch collection for me ( I do have a backup Studio underdog)
Great video - as usual, gents!
If I had to pick three from my current collection:
- Dive/Sport: Starbucks Submariner 126610LV
- Dress/Work: Blue Datejust 41 126334
- Everyday: Green dial IWC Pilot Chronograph 41 mm IW388104
Amidst learning a lot I laughed more than during any other watch video, so thanks 🙏
These 2 are the best! Please come back
Absolutely love my 3861 Speedmaster. From Michael's wristshots it looks like he went with the 48mm version. Bold call.
Omega is still an absolute powerhouse of value.
You can pick up a good condition 1960's Geneve Ladymatic for £200.
“Competition is the thief of joy”. Like you said Christian, it should just be fun. People shouldn’t let “keeping up with the Jones’” ruin what should be fun!
Gold speedmaster is amazing
Amazing episode guys!! Had me in stitches
Basic 3 watch collection: Overseas, Aquanaut and some A Lange und Söhne like the Saxonia Thin
My 3 watch collection rn is the Apple Watch, 2008 Explore 36mm and 1601 white gold datejust the only one I would replace is the Apple Watch with a Casio or Cartier I also really like some vintage Tudor pieces
My personal:
Speedy Reduced 3510.50 on 18mm Omega mesh bracelet, nato or Black leather strap
Seamaster 368.1041 Pre-Bond SSYG auto large on factory (of course) SS bracelet
Apple Watch S6 on a Spectre style nato
You gotta get a de-esser on the mic, Christian’s S’s whistle like he’s got dentures sometimes 😅 great shows! Always!
Don’t love the Daytona as a 1 watch collection. I actually own the “light” steel model (though black dial) from this video but I rarely wear it because the dial legibility is actually terrible. No doubt it looks awesome, though…
About Speedmaster. If you choose a vintage version like 176.007 (I won one), it can look small on your wrist (despite it is tall one)
My perfect 3 watch collection would be whittling my own collection down to 3 watches within the collection
1.) Rolex DJ36, blue-fluted motif dial (fluted bezel, jubilee bracelet)
2.) Cartier Tank Must Large on black strap
3.) IWC Pilot's Chronograph 41 (racing green dial, brown leather strap)
Covers everything from sports to daily to dress, with a bracelet, brown strap, and black strap, and 3 different amazing dials with a patterned-sunburst blue, sunburst green, and the classic silvery-white opaline. And all indices are different with batons, Arabic numerals, and roman numerals.
“I’m having a hard time describing the je ne sais quoi” 😂
You guys are fucking hilarious. I smile and laugh through your entire video(s), what a reprieve from the daily grind. Thanks for making me more informed on watches, the watch industry and laughing at the same time. Keep up the great work!
Let me know if y'all ever go on tour ;)
My 3 piece at the moment:
1. Aqua Terra 2503.50.00
2. G shock 5600e
3. Little old 34mm Enicar dress watch from the 60s
I have 25 watches , 8 Luxury, but if i have ti choose only 3 for life:
-Omega speedmaster hesalite
-Rolex Yacth Master 42 Yellow Gold
-Rolex Gmt Master 2 Pepsi
Michael should try the Speedmaster 38 w black dial. Size is great for a thin wrist. Bezel is a bit thinner than the moon watch which brings more attention to the dial which I think looks even better. I decided to go with the 38 despite thinking I could pull off the moonwatch. Very happy I did.
The movement is expensive to service tho
Get the Speedmaster Reduced if you don’t like the big size of the regular.
Just came across your channel and love it! You have a new subscriber! 🙌🏻🙌🏻
If I had a shot for every time I hear "best watch I've ever seen" in this episode, I wouldn't make it till the end xD. Love your work guys!
Should I trade my DateJust41 green Motif for a Gold DayDate?
'I'm not very much a sports watch guy..' *flails GMT Master across the screen* lol😂
This series is amazing. More!
"I actually put the Longines quality over the Tudor quality" ... can I get a hallelujah!
When Christian introduces himself in real life, does he say he’s a curator of Theo and Harris?
Man, I could not agree with you more on Cartier's refusal to make a standard model mechanical Tank. That has frustrated me for years. Would love to hear their rational for that strange decision, as it's what prevents me from buying a Tank, period. I'm just not going to pay mechanical money for a quartz, just because it says "Cartier." I want a watch, not jewelry.
For me the perfect 3 watch collection would be: Omega Speedmaster, Rolex Oyster or Datejust, Casio B640 or CA53
My favourite watch channel
Love the banter and chemistry
Great watch picks. Less convinced on the X5!
Also check out my 3 short (1 min) videos two weeks back on best watch collections at different price points. Love to get your thoughts.
Shameless plug!!! Although less focused on vintage I did enjoy your shorts videos on watch collections as well.
I agree
1/T&H best channel
2/Shameless plug!
3/But to be fair did enjoy your short videos you posted before on watch collections and also the one on natural stone dials
If the three watch nerd at top price point doesn’t have an A Lange & Sohne….
Black tie is originally a no watch event, so even for that the speedmaster is good. Although this doesn't happen anymore.
Great vid, but I hate that Nomos didn’t show up on any list. The sport line 38/42 specifically. Seemed like a slam dunk.
Gotta love all your topics and taste in watches 👌👌
As a one watch collection the Rolex OP is great but i personally feel if it is just one watch... i kind of need that date. Thats just me.
OMG I AGREE WITH THE CARTIER ANNOYANCE!
Maybe. But the eye wanders
Cheers
Great minds definately do! I have had a Wolbrook. It was a great watch for the money. It was just 1 or 2 mm too big.
I have the Speedy (which might also be too big for my 6,75” wrist - but it is so iconic) 😊
These are the 2 greatest people in the watch world.
Greatest nerds
the trident 38mm or 40mm is great if you think they are huge.
Such a fun video! Thanks guys!
My dad also prefers the older models because they're lighter but i don't, doesn't feel like you have anything on.
Love your watch collections, truly inspiring! 😍👏
Try the Speedmaster Mark 40! 39 mm with the triple date.
Those knuckle cracks were incredible
A banger of an episode! Laughed a little too hard on this. Hahaha.
Stand Up or more accurately sit down plus watches a winning combination.
The speedmaster does look huge on his wrist indeed
Michael needs to check out the first omega in space Speedmaster
Off topic, but value any input. My friend and I bought stainless Rolex as tool watches. Any thoughts on why the brand didn't use the Cellini line as a vehicle for haute horology and offer Subs, Daytonas, Explorers, etc. only as task instruments. Also, any thoughts on Damasko and Junghans?
