That's why I'm here! I've been researching for two months and I think I'm going for that watch. Torn over black or white dial. Good to hear you're loving it
Received a white-dial 42mm for Christmas last year as my first "enthusiast" watch. It's been a great adventure companion from the California redwood forest to downeast Maine. The 38 might look more classic but I don't mind the larger size, since I have a >7 inch wrist and it sits nicely on the textile NATO.
Here are the perfect watches in my collection 3861 Sapphire Sandwich Moonwatch, Tudor BB58 Blue, Hamiltonn Khaki Mechanical (white), Seiko King Seiko SJE083 LE, Casio G Shock GWM5610U1. Ive bought and sold a lot of watches in the last few years, and these are the ones that are closest to perfect for me and what I like. I think the Longines sector dial was a great pick by Adrian, as that is one that has been on my short list for some time, but I’d have to disagree in regards to the Longines Big Eye. I purchased that watch a couple of years ago, and it never made it out of the house before I sold it. It is a phenomenal watch in regards to specs, but the case is just too slab sided and thick for my tastes. Another great pick by Adrian is the explorer. That’s a watch I could see myself loving for sure, I just don’t like to buy pre owned, and I don’t want to spend nearly 10k for a brand new Explorer. And I agree that a good alternative to the explorer is a mark series IWC, which is one that I’ve thought about purchasing many times. I think the next one for me will be the Omega Aqua Terra 38 teak dial. That one is seemingly very underrated.
I have that exact Hamilton Mechanical. Grabbed it for about £260 off eBay used. Would love to say I’ve beat it up by climbing and hiking etc. but I gashed it on a bollard walking into Sainsbury’s 😅 it has travelled a lot with me. I think the perfect dress watch is the Grand Seiko SBGW231 - perfectly proportioned with no date or other complications distracting from its beautiful dial and polishing. Bought it a few months back and can’t stop looking at it!

YES, the GP Laureato is the perfect watch! Thank you, Adrian! It's not as overhyped like the RO or the Nautilus, while being just as historically significant and, in my view, with a much better design with it's brushed and shiny surfaces and rounded and angled shapes being much more balanced than the brute AP design. I just ❤ my Laureato Chrono 🐼!
I have a 2023 Explorer in 40mm. I have large wrists so the 40mm is just perfect for me. It's not the most complicated watch in my collection but it is one that is literally capable of being worn with anything for anything. I understand now why people say the only watch you really ever need is an Explorer. It's literally perfect.
Haha classic. People who only see watches on RUclips videos love to think Vacheron is the dream. People who actually buy these watches know it is absolutely rubbish for the price. It failed for a reason, it sucks. PRX looks for Patek money. Boring non quality bracelet, the list goes on.
Hi Adrian. As someone who agrees with you on the 114270 I’m glad you brought up the Mark XX. The IWC finishing is next level and not many people talk about it. I switch between 5 straps including one of your charcoal natos.
I have an 11 watch wardrobe, ( I don't really 'collect' ), including 3 of those you mentioned, though my speedy is the Ed White version. However it's my 2010 explorer that's gets at least as much wrist time as all the others combined. No setting up the date, no winding if it's worn the next day, super all day comfortable, low key, ( 99% of people don't notice it which suits me just fine ), legible without looking tool or diver, classy, discreet and it's a Rolex. At the risk of appearing smug, wearing a Rolex explorer is a quiet self affirmation of my efforts.

I would do many things for a steel 222, but as an alternative I went for the Cartier Santos medium size. Although it's square, the integrated bracelet just so gorgeously flows into the case on the medium size. The bracelet is flashy yet subdued, and the brand heritage kicks it up a notch. Feels like nothing is on my wrist and I don't need to baby it around water.

I've been a watch fan for 5 years, collector for 3 years. My first was a Moonwatch in 2021. A great watch, probably the best watch money can buy under $10,000. My collection has gone on to see a DJ36, Day Date 36, Coke GMT, Daytona, Batman GMT, DJ41, OP41, as well as a Zenith Defy, Cartier Santos XL, Hublot Classic Fusion (lol). My favorite, by far, is my most recent addition: White Gold Rolex Submariner 126619LB. Its the most beautiful watch I've ever seen on my wrist. It's got history being a submariner, and its got understated luxury due to the white gold. I have worn it every day since buying it in June, with the exception of 2 days where I wore the DJ41. My current collection is now down to strictly Rolex. Minus the Day Date, I've held onto the rest. I would consider buying another Omega at some point, and am interested in Grand Seiko, VC Overseas, and GP Laureato at the moment as well. I'm 29 years old and sports watches are my style, but in 20 or so years I can see myself eyeing up a Patek if God continues blessing me in life. Nice video! Great choices. Would have loved to see a section on World Timers and Moonphases.
Wow, thats an amazing collection. What do you do to afford all those watches? (also just wandering your thoughts on your Rolex GMTs? I've been looking at one for a while and just think they look amazing)
I've recently began my obsession as a watch collector. And i must say- out of all the luxury brands I've been researching, for me the amzwatch's watches are the most intriguing.
I’m 2 mins in but had to comment on the editing of the black face and white face speedmaster stitching together and the way the hand sweeps round. Perfectly executed there!
What a nice pick! It really helps to understand that you can achieve a stylish look without breaking the bank. The comparisons were spot-on, and the detailed explanations made it clear why each alternative is a great option!
Nice video! I own a 3861 Speedmaster. Walked into a Rolex dealer in Italy a couple of days ago and they had a 36mm Explorer 1 for sale there and then. I nearly, nearly bought it. But after a walk around the block and a coffee I figured I already own one perfect watch, no need to buy another… just yet.
Excellent informative video. the 1815 up/down in rose gold is just a complete stunner of a watch and you are so right on getting a non-complicated dial shine through. OTOH, the pepsi gmt master II is for me the rolex. With the jubilee bracelet it stands out but then it doesn't scream a rolex.
got my 39mm with the white dial on the 3-link "Bader" bracelet watch on MaMaCoo 3 weeks ago and am loving it to pieces. Absolute fantastic watch that wears super comfortable on my 6.75 inch wrist. Chose the 3-link over the 5-link bracelet for the toolless quick adjustment. Way more comfortable than my Longines Hydroconquest 41 mm.
Funnily enough, I just got a GP Laureato yesterday. The finishing and dial are amazing, the bracelet is supremely comfortable and it wears and feels like high horology. Not sure why it’s not more popular.
I was going to comment "Let's be honest, no one will spend 12k on a GP", but hey ho, there's still brave people out there. Good on you man! Enjoy it and share it! Definetely a watch conversation starter.
Adrian, I agree with you 100% that the 5-digit Rolexes from the 1990s and early 2000s were PERFECT in proportion and design!! Keep up the amazing content!!
For someone who is just entering the watch collecting world, I appreciate this video. It allows me to see the other brands that normally don’t get mentioned or are known to the newbie’s. Thx again!
Eventhough I do agree with the beautiful alternatives that are in the video....I feel like some of them can be closer to the main watch such as : Omega Speedmaster --> Bulova Lunar Pilot Vacheron Constantin 222 --> Citizen Forza / Super Titanium NJ0180 OR Citizen Tsuyosa Rolex Explorer --> Nivada Grenchen Super Antartic 3.6.9 Other than these abiove, I think Adrian has got these bang on !
love seeing the IWC on your wrist! Got my IWC Pilot's Chronograph 41 on today. Racing green dial, and just picked up the new green rubber strap for it! i agree with the explorer 36 and the GMT master 2 being perfect. I'd also throw in the datejust 36 (fluted bezel, jubilee bracelet) as a perfect watch.
my perfect watch is seiko sarb033, bought it right before it was discontinued. Swapped out the original sapphire glass to one with AR coating and the black shiny lacquered dial really showed it beauty, the indices and hands are gorgeous!. Added a micro adjustment clasp extension for the perfect fit.
Upgraded my Explorer 114270 for the new 124270. Don't know how anyone can say the old one is better! The 124270 is better in every single aspect of the watch. Love it!!
I would rather suggest the Sinn 556 A. A watch you will actually use in rough conditions, when your shiny Rolex Explorer will safely remain in its box.
I bought a watch from MaMaCoo lightly used for my last milestone birthday. Don't wear it as much as it deserves, but not afraid to, either. It's stunning . Good taste, Sir.
Nice video Adrian. Agree with all the points apart from the first. There really is no alternative to the omega speedmaster. Im not an omega fan but this watch is just too perfect and unique in design while being iconic at the same time. No watch can come close imo.
MAMACOO is one of my favorite watch manufacturers they do offer beautifull dials, good workmanship & moovements. That smooth sweeping second hand is truly mesmerizing!
Interesting choices! Bulova moonwatch is a legit alternative to the speedy I think I LOVE the laureato choice such an unsung hero The explorer is an excellent choice and smiths Everest option should be mentioned I think Nice video thank you
Vacheron Ultra Thin Perpetual Calendar in white gold…….or gold gold for that matter. Wears like a charm, great bracelet with micro adjustments and quick change with a rubber and leather strap option. Expensive? Yes, but awesome!
I've recently began my obsession as a watch collector. And i must say- out of all the luxury brands I've been researching, for me the AMZWATCH's watches are the most intriguing.
I've had the Hamilton KFM 38mm for years and really like it, but recently got the Hamilton Murph 38mm and I like it even more. Both are strap monsters! Love the Rolex explorer design but for the money saved, Hamilton does the job for me.
I rarely comment, but this deserves more than a thumbs up. I enjoyed this thoroughly. It is thoughtful, relevant and hits many of the watches that I personally admire. Terrific video.
Hi Adrian, Great video. Few comments 1) VC 222 indeed has a high price but availability is not an issue. Here in the US, folks are being offered 222 as first time clients with few weeks/months wait. 2) On GP Laureato, I feel it has few shortcomings. It wears too big for its size. I have handled it multiple times and each time I have been underwhelmed on the case and bracelet finishing. I am comparing it with Alpine Eagle here (between the $11-$15k price range). Whereas GP has the better finished movement, Alpine Eagle absolutely trumps in on dial, case, and bracelet finishing, not to mention the wearability factor. So IMHO, Laureato is not even a leader within its price category, Alpine Eagle is. So that doesn’t help with the comparing it with the likes of Royal Oak and Overseas that easily sit 1-2 tiers above it. Also, now likes of Moser Streamliner, Czapek Antarctique, and Alpine Eagle XPS with the LUC movement are true competitors to Royal Oak and Overseas at the $25k~ price category. Again, thank you for the great work that you do.
Been watching your videos for a while now and was inspired to start a collection. Started with the MAMACOO, its specs for price and clean looks, now am looking for a dress watch to add.
For the Lange, take a look at the A. Lange & Söhne 1815 Side Step. It’s probably the quirkiest (front side) and most sentimental (back side) Lange. And personally I prefer the 3940 over its successor, but both are great choices.
I'll never really understand why the Khaki Field Automatic doesnt get the love of the Mechanical. It's not just an added rotor, it's an all-round better watch.
Amazing video! One addition: I'd like to add the Hamilton Jazzmaster Viewmatic Auto to your affordable Dress picks. It's dial layout is almost identical to the JLC Master Control Date but with a textured portion in the center part of the dial. Absolute stunner for the price of just 600-800 EUR.
Not including the bulova lunar pilot (43mm version) as an alternative to the speedmaster is criminal. Yes, bulova is a sht brand, but at least the lunar pilot is their one good watch. I’ve had the 45mm for years, recently tried out the 43mm and I love both.
I hate the praise that the Hamilton khaki mechanical always get, the case finishing is absolutely terrible in my opinion. The bead blasting is rough and the case back is mismatched with a brushed finish. Previous khaki models were way better with a nice smooth blasted finish all round.
I agree! I owned one and never ended up falling in love with it. I have a Sinn 356 that is bead blasted and it’s 100 times better than the finishing on any Hamilton. Also, I hate the overly long lug to lug it just doesn’t wear right.
Another alternative inline with the Tissot PRX and the Christopher Ward is the Nivada Grenchen F77. Stunning watch from a company with a proper history.
😂 your definition and my definition of cheap is wayyyyy off.... Let us know when you have a list of stuff under 500 (ish)... even though I have the money for these really expensive Rolexes and such, there is no way in hell I'm going to spend that much money on a watch.. there are better places to put my money and into a watch it's all on saying
I think another great field-watch alternative from Hamilton is their Pilot Pioneer in 36mm. Excellent vintage proportions, manual winding and a beautiful tonneau shaped case. Take it from me, I own an Explorer 124270 and it indeed is perfection but the pricepoint is quite steep. I would also add the Omega Seamaster 300 bond blue wave dial in midsize (36.5mm) to this list as an affordable diver, I also own that watch and nothing except my explorer wears so light and buttery smooth.
You got me hyped on a Speedmaster with a black/white split dial only to realize that it doesn't exist. Now THAT’S a Speedmaster that I'd buy. Zenith A384 vibes.
My alternative to the Explorer 1 is the Sinn 556A. I've worn it from working on motorcycles to playing piano at fancy venues. It does it all (If you haven't got the funds for the Rolex).
Great video, very accurate analysis. In my 4.5 years in the game as a watch collector and enthusiast, I collected a lot from MaMaCoo I was thinking I was able to get a blue SD but I'm not vip enough, but I'm not giving up. Hehe. Great video.
Baume & Mercier Riviera is another great sports watch alternative with heritage. Other options i think are great, im 100% on board with the explorer being considered an icon. It is simplicity perfected. Another option that i would have expected for the A. Lange & Söhne alternative is the IWC Portuguese collection. The base model is simple elegance and nails preportions.
My watch was purchased 2 years ago from MAMACOO and, to this day, it still looks and runs as well as it did the day it arrived. That movement has never missed a beat despite never having been serviced. I can't complain about that.
For a perpetual calendar, Citizen makes a slew of watches with eco drive movements that are incredible bargains and underrated for their level of finishing
Good alternative to Hamilton- Citizen Promaster Tough. Just got mine on the strap. Love it. Light weight, sub 12mm thick, 300m water resist, monobloc construction (no case back - solid piece of titanium)... for £350 its superb
I took a drink every time Adrian said ‘absolutely’, ‘love’, or ‘absolutely love’. I woke up 4 days later.

Adrian made a glaring omission of the Bulova Lunar Pilot as the next best alternative, with genuine history, to the Omega Speedmaster.
Came here to post this. If any watch had the history to compete against a Speedmaster, it’s Bulova.

I’m 2 mins in but had to comment on the editing of the black face and white face speedmaster stitching together and the way the hand sweeps round. Perfectly executed there!
🙌🏻
What a nice pick! It really helps to understand that you can achieve a stylish look without breaking the bank. The comparisons were spot-on, and the detailed explanations made it clear why each alternative is a great option!
Nice video! I own a 3861 Speedmaster. Walked into a Rolex dealer in Italy a couple of days ago and they had a 36mm Explorer 1 for sale there and then. I nearly, nearly bought it. But after a walk around the block and a coffee I figured I already own one perfect watch, no need to buy another… just yet.
I found the perfect watch in the 3861... after i have Rolex.
There's just something romantic about the speedmaster professionals.
I love the 1815 up down
Best video you've done in a while IMO Adrian - missing an out & out diver no?...
Great choices though, especially that 222, utter class!
Could you do a Video on your IWC Mark XX?
got my 39mm with the white dial on the 3-link "Bader" bracelet watch on MaMaCoo 3 weeks ago and am loving it to pieces.
Congratulations I want one! Beautiful silvery white dial for me please
I was going to comment "Let's be honest, no one will spend 12k on a GP", but hey ho, there's still brave people out there. Good on you man! Enjoy it and share it! Definetely a watch conversation starter.
@@franciscocabrerabrito5945 I wouldn’t dare have bought mine new. Got a preowned one at a substantial discount off retail.
Thx again!
That's because the vast majority of watch channels push the Chinese garbage copy watches.
Yeah this video is really good in that sense
Same here!
Eventhough I do agree with the beautiful alternatives that are in the video....I feel like some of them can be closer to the main watch such as :
Omega Speedmaster --> Bulova Lunar Pilot
Vacheron Constantin 222 --> Citizen Forza / Super Titanium NJ0180 OR Citizen Tsuyosa
Rolex Explorer --> Nivada Grenchen Super Antartic 3.6.9
Other than these abiove, I think Adrian has got these bang on !
love seeing the IWC on your wrist!
Outstanding video.I have to go with the MAMACOO, especially with that green dial as my favorite
my perfect watch is seiko sarb033, bought it right before it was discontinued.
Love it!!
For me the Ranger would be the best Explorer alternative
especially with the anti freeze movement.
It's got that romantic charm.
MAMACOO is one of my favorite watch manufacturers they do offer beautifull dials, good workmanship & moovements. That smooth sweeping second hand is truly mesmerizing!
Interesting choices!
Bulova moonwatch is a legit alternative to the speedy I think
I LOVE the laureato choice such an unsung hero
The explorer is an excellent choice and smiths Everest option should be mentioned I think
Nice video thank you
Vacheron Ultra Thin Perpetual Calendar in white gold…….or gold gold for that matter. Wears like a charm, great bracelet with micro adjustments and quick change with a rubber and leather strap option. Expensive? Yes, but awesome!
What do you think about the Sinn 556i? :) as a daily watch :)
Sinn 556 is a solid choice for an everyday affordable
It's a perfect daily! So versatile and solid.
@@BarkandJack Thank You for the response! Greetings from Germany :)
I've recently began my obsession as a watch collector. And i must say- out of all the luxury brands I've been researching, for me the AMZWATCH's watches are the most intriguing.
There's also a Frederique Constant perpetual calendar that is "reasonably priced" by this category's standards!
I think you have chosen really nice watches with their alternatives. They are all superb watches
Like the vid, but you missed Adrian. Speedmaster alternate should have been the Bulova Lunar Pilot
I've had the Hamilton KFM 38mm for years and really like it, but recently got the Hamilton Murph 38mm and I like it even more. Both are strap monsters! Love the Rolex explorer design but for the money saved, Hamilton does the job for me.
100% agree on the khaki field, absolutely love my bronze 38! 14:12
Best 3 watches: Speedmaster, Speedmaster and the Speedmaster. Bonus pick: Speedmaster
Bulova Lunar Pilot as alternatice to Speedy?
I have the 43 mm and absolutely love it!
I rarely comment, but this deserves more than a thumbs up. I enjoyed this thoroughly. It is thoughtful, relevant and hits many of the watches that I personally admire. Terrific video.
No Bulova Lunar Pilot vs the Omega Speedie?
Nah. Too big.
@@benh715 not for little boys
@@benh715for small wrists. Any wrist 7+ can hold this historic “non hype” watch
This is the most validating video ever. I have four of the watches featured (two of the eight and two alternatives)
Hi Adrian,
Great video. Few comments
1) VC 222 indeed has a high price but availability is not an issue.
Agreed on the GP. I was shocked how big it wore. And I don’t mind larger watches. 38 would be nice but where I was they didn’t have for me to try.
First time clients offered VC 222 😮
Been watching your videos for a while now and was inspired to start a collection. Started with the MAMACOO, its specs for price and clean looks, now am looking for a dress watch to add.
Adrian, what happened to About Effing Time? Miss those discussions.
Yeah what happened ;)
Please bring the team back
It’s about Effing Time we get another episode soon.
They announced an indefinite hiatus a while ago, they didn’t have the budget to sustain it.
Watch the end of the Christmas special episode for the answer. There will be no new AET.
For the Lange, take a look at the A. Lange & Söhne 1815 Side Step. It’s probably the quirkiest (front side) and most sentimental (back side) Lange. And personally I prefer the 3940 over its successor, but both are great choices.
I feel like we’re missing a diver. Maybe something along the lines of Doxa or the Longines Legend Diver.
Oh so close... my 10 watch collection is very similar
- A. Lange & Söhne 1815 Up/Down
- Grand Seiko SLGC001 "Tentagraph"
- Grand Seiko SBGA211 "Snowflake"
- Rolex GMT Master 2 "Rootbeer"
- Rolex Submariner Date
- Omega Speedmaster Moonphase
- Omega Seamaster 300 Chronograph
- Cartier Santos ADLC
- MRG-B5000B-1DR "Square"
- MRG-B2100B-1ADR "CasiOak"
😂😂😂😂😂😂😊😊😊😊😊😊
I'll never really understand why the Khaki Field Automatic doesnt get the love of the Mechanical. It's not just an added rotor, it's an all-round better watch.
@@RPE-Official Nothing amuses me more than a watch snob.
@@RPE-Official have you finished yet, watchsnob? Run along, now.
@@RPE-Official The automatic is 100m WR. The mechanical is 50m. I have the automatic and it's second only to my Aqua Terra for wrist time.
The automatic version is easier to dress up or down as well.
@@emphasis20 yep... get it on the bracelet with some strap options and you never need to wear anything else.
You miss the bulove moon watch
It always amazes me how much beauty and precision are added to the parts of amzwatch's watch 99% of people will never see.
Thank you. Always enjoy your videos. It always makes my day to see when there is a new one.
Adrian, an incredible video after a long time!!! U have hit a home run this time my friend!!!kudos!
Not including the bulova lunar pilot (43mm version) as an alternative to the speedmaster is criminal. Yes, bulova is a sht brand, but at least the lunar pilot is their one good watch. I’ve had the 45mm for years, recently tried out the 43mm and I love both.
Except it is more of a "homage" than an "alternative" in a sense Mr. Barker is using this word....
Love MAMACOO watch,Such a great looking watch to match with the precisionist movement.
Adrian’s pronunciation of Söhne 😬
Adrian, that half and half shot at 1:45 is something to behold. Really well done!
No Grand Seiko? :-)
I think he wanted to include good watches only
Love this video - I have to say, now with the Christopher Ward C60 GMT, we have a whole new ballgame... Love all those watches, thank you
That pronunciation of söhne was not ok.
I agree I tried one and Jesus Christ was I disappointed
Thank you!
This is mean, but after trying the titanium one they feel like a middle school graduation watch
Chinese knockoffs are actually better
Another alternative inline with the Tissot PRX and the Christopher Ward is the Nivada Grenchen F77. Stunning watch from a company with a proper history.
😂 your definition and my definition of cheap is wayyyyy off.... Let us know when you have a list of stuff under 500 (ish)... even though I have the money for these really expensive Rolexes and such, there is no way in hell I'm going to spend that much money on a watch.. there are better places to put my money and into a watch it's all on saying
It always amazes me how much beauty and precision are added to the parts of AMZWATCH's watch 99% of people will never see.
The GP is stunning.
MOVADO Museum Classic Gold on black strap. Is perfect.
Great video, very accurate analysis. In my 4.5 years in the game as a watch collector and enthusiast, I collected a lot from MaMaCoo I was thinking I was able to get a blue SD but I'm not vip enough, but I'm not giving up. Hehe. Great video.
6:11 that's amazing. The onyx dial is phenomenal!
As a personal preference, JLC Polaris Daytona is just so right for my wrist. (+ Hamilton Murphy 38 on black cordovan strap.)
3 fav watches so far.
JLC are my favourite watches. I'm glad they made this vlog. I'm surprised the Reverso didn't make the list.
My grail watch is the Omega Planet Ocean 600m.
Really enjoyed watching this , I think the longer style videos are where you’re at your best Adrian.
