Unfortunately England were very slow to adapt tactically. We played 4-4-2 for far too long. A midfield 3 may have worked with Gerrard and Scholes playing a double pivot with Lampard pushed a bit higher.
The only issue there is that we lacked pace out wide. Downing wasn’t good enough, nor was Lennon later on or wright-Phillips before him.
Beckham was the obvious choice wide right but he wasn’t quick either.
Thinking about it, England from 04-09 had a really good team on paper but they were never going to be competitive with the types of players they had.

United’s treble was better, the teams they had to face in that season in both the CL & FA Cup… not to mention a very powerful Arsenal team in the league… and remember this, the Premier League was probably the 3rd best/strongest league in Europe at the time… Man United were not favourites to win the thing by any stretch of the imagination… City play in the strongest league in Europe with a budget that can only be matched by other English teams and maybe PSG… them winning the treble is a remarkable feat, but it’s not a surprise tbh… so for me, United in 99 was the better feat 😊

Only the most anti-ManUtd fans would say otherwise. Debates are supposed to be for when you can find strong & weak points for both sides but this there's no debate because there's no category in ManCity's treble that was as impressive as ManUtd's.

United barely won the CL final and they barely won their league as well. They weren’t really favorite to win the CL that year.
City however, thrashed every single team in the UCL, that includes Bayern and the previous CL champion RM. They were favorites from the start till the end and managed to get there.

@@JamesFoxx city’s place financially and economically? They didn’t spend as much the season they won the treble. There were plenty of other teams that outspent them.
During United’s treble, they too have spent and signed players. Stam and Yorke came in as the club record transfer fees. So we can’t really say that they were weaker financially.
While they struggled to win the treble, city had smooth sailing and were favorites in every single match they played.
Yes United’s treble came as a surprise and maybe that was “better” as they weren’t as good as the other teams so it was exciting to watch.
City’s treble was somewhat predictable so it isn’t really something to shout about.
But if you’re comparing the teams, or which team was better, it is definitely this city side.
