He gets a load of stick but he's very honest. Any Balon D'or winner deserves eternal respect.
It's a popularity contest.
This is probably the best Michael Owen interview I've seen
More players voted for Gerrard over Scholes in the Ballon d'Or, FIFA team of the year, and the PL team of the year.
Because he was a superstar who stood out in an otherwise 2nd rate team. La Masia wasn't showing videos of Gerrard to students like Messi, Xavi, Iniesta, Fabregas, etc. Scholes, quite literally, taught those young students how to play football.
@@benitotommassi5820am a United fan but Lampard edges for me ahead of Scholes
Means nothing, Scholes never even had an agent and he never got involved in the politics. Scholes never even spoke after games.
@@dondamon4669 right, well that's relevant...

I'm curious who Liverpool fans would pick: Owen at 18, or Fowler at 18?
Fowler most naturally gifted goalscorer.....GOD
Fowler was wild. if i recall he scored more hatricks very early in his liverpool career. he had no fear
Needs to keep Newcastles name out of his mouth.
Young Owen > Young Rooney
As a goalscorer? Yes. As a player? No where close
Hell no. Young Rooney was way better than Owen.
How is Henry better than CR7. Daft.
In the Premier League he was
@matthewmaguire71 they didn't say that, he said he is the best player to ever play in the Premier league.
That is what they meant obviously.
@niallireland2940 you're missing the point. Henry's best years were in the premier league. Ronaldos were in la liga. Henry dominated the pl for years. Ronaldo didn't. Most ex players have said the same thing. You're ignorant.
@richardjones3792 Ronaldo's best year was 40+ goals Premier league and Champions league double + Balon' d'or 👍 whatever you say mate.
Respect to Owen. Has every right to be bitter about the injuries but he’s full of praise for the players he grew up playing with who didn’t have the same bad luck
That's the most intelligent thing some has said in this comment section full of crazy bias people, kudos
Lampard to get you a goal, Gerrard to win you a game and Scholes to win you a league. That's it.
Rubbish 😂😂😂
Great comment
@tris421 probably the best analogy I’ve seen and I’m a utd fan! 🥹😢
Shite talk 😂😂
He had Keane beside him holding his hand
Which league did Scholes won for Utd? - Was it not likes of Cantona, Ronaldo, Ruud, Van Persie, Van der Sar, Vidic and so on primarily responsible. Scholes was a jouneyman !
Zidane said in his prime Gerrard was the best in the world, over Ronaldo and Messi. End of discussion
Owen confirming what all non united fans know, gerrard is more complete than scholes
Milner is more complete than Benzema… so what? 😂
@@civildiscourse7626 so gerrard is better than scholes you dog, as balon dor winner M.Owen stated, what a stupid comparison also, milner is a midfielder, benzema is a striker where as gerrard and scholes both are central midfielders. cry more

What a fantastic interview. Thank you Michael and Harry.
I hated him at Liverpool, but that's just to know how good he was. I'm happy he won the league with us.
United fan - agree Owen at 18 was better. Rooney as he got older was better overall and for his longevity at a top team.
Na disagree mate, at Everton; Wayne Rooney is the best player I’ve ever seen at Goodison. At 16 he was running games single handed, at 17 he would have won England euro 2004 on his own, and at 18 he was scoring hat tricks in the champions league, I think he’s better than Owen at the same age.

Lovely interview. I enjoyed this one
I am a Korean fan of Michael Owen. I've liked you since 2001, and I've been delighted and moved to see you every moment. My football life started with you.
The only football star to me is you. I hope you always stay healthy and full of passionate.
People forget that he was the original star boy. Like to win the golden boot at 17 and again at 18. To be that influential to the England team before 20. He has 8 hat tricks as the teenager. EIGHT!
If weren’t for the injuries it’s scary what player he could of become
Gerrard is for sure clear, not by a lot, but clearly a level above - like messi and Ronaldo, Messi is better but Ronaldo is unreal and still behind
Rooney is the greatest English player ever, followed by Sir Bobby Charlton
He's not even in the top ten footballers of all time. Wasn't even the best in his team

Every single answer he says is correct!
Owen was the better finisher at 18...but Rooney was the better all round team player at 18...
No he wasn't
Most of Owen's mates are his former LFC team-mates. He's still LFC at heart, really.
Sounds like MichaelOwen thinks of StevenGerrard the same way as RoyKeane does with DenisIrwn lol
prime owen made the best in the modern era look average.
They're too different compare though really. Owen was a quck and lethal striker, whereas Rooney was an all round street player. Owen was further ahead in his development at 18 but Rooney had so much more to his game than goals. Owen's game was only ever about putting the ball in the net. Rooney playing just off a prime Owen would have been devastating though
Owen had a lot more to his game than just goals his speed and acceleration was frightening and his intelligence on how to beat the last man and when to make the runs was the best I've seen Rooney was never as good as Owen at the same age,
Owen won the ballon d'Or at 21 years of age
Michael Owen is a Liverpool boy you can't knock him for that but as united fans we love him for scoring the winner in a Manchester Derby in the last minute to win 4-3 and his celebration showed he loved he did that.
Your not from Manchester are you?
@@ggmm6182 I am yes
@@danikahn5378 Michael Owen is from Chester not Liverpool
@@ggmm6182 you misunderstood... i wasn't implying he's from Liverpool I said he's a Liverpool boy as in from their academy like he said in the video.
Owen top interview. To win back to back golden boots at 17 and 18 in an era riddled with top strikers showed the absolute levels of this man - clear of Rooney at that age and i'd even argue clear of Mbappe at 17/18. Injuries ruined Owen. I'm a Liverpool fan and still have respect for Owen despite not agreeing with his move to United - facts are facts was an animal. Respect for the truth about Gerrard but in reality Owen was four years ahead of Gerrard - Gerrard came to the fore in 2001 despite rotating with MacAllister - what was Owen doing then? Winning the Ballon Dor thats what 😅 Liverpool and England overburdening ruined him.
Honestly. Owen was only behind R9 between 97-99.
He was electric.
Owen a better striker at 18. Faster and as good a finisher around. Rooney wasn't a centre forward at 18. And as an all round player, Rooney was obviously more talented. Owen was more than just speed, but when he lost his speed he struggled with adapting. Positioning. Shooting when not running at goal. Linking up with other players.
Very good and thoughtful answers. Thanks, Mr Owen.
I’m choosing Owen at 18. He was second only to Ronaldo (the real one) he was phenomenal. Rooney was hard though but just Owen- he really was something scary in world football
Owen was world class at 18 though. As he said, 2 golden boots before he was 20 and won the Balon'Dor and got Real Madrids interest.
sorry the "real ronaldo"? nah R9 is world class but lets be serious, the real Ronaldo is and will always be Cristiano Ronaldo
would you take Owen at 18 for his 2-3 seasons of being world class or would you take Rooney knowing he would be world class for many more years
Both of these guys were world class from 17 but Owen takes it up until at least 19 and I'm a massive Rooney fan. I much prefer Wayne, but Owen was deadly and everyone knew!
Owen was deadly no doubt just a shame injuries ruined him, shame peak Owenwas just. for 2-3 years due to his injuries@@DirtyJamesUK
Alonso whom played with Gerrard thought Carrick was the best English midfielder.

@@douglasdouga-ji3gn just stating Alonso's own words. Seems these words triggered you. 😂
Fun fact - Owen was joint top scorer in both those seasons with two other players
Ok your point is?
Owen speaks nothing but real truth kudos to him
Zidan chose Gerrard
Without being too negative, I don't particularly rate Owen on TV as a pundit, but he seems a sound guy and very likeable.
.....And let's not forget, on the field in his prime, Owen was an absolute menace. Admiration for this guy has just gone up a notch. 😎❤️
Fr a good guy to have a convo with but he just doesn’t suit as a pundit
Now in England ppl prefer the Rodri/Gundogan type to the all action Jordan Henderson type. With 2023 eyes on, whose the best, Gerrard, Scholes, Carrick, Lampard?
My childhood hero. Prime Owen was incredibly fast and extremely agile and he had strong competition with brazil ronaldo , henry ,Raul ,Batistuta ,Kluivert ,Sukar and more . It's a shame his injuries ruined his great career
Forget the "golden boots", Rooney was a better player than Owen at 18.
Rooney was bullying men at 16, Owen was a fast finisher, Rooney was complete at 18.
Owen has every right to say he was better can’t ignore winning the golden boot in your first 2 seasons as a teenager that’s a ridiculous achievement
It's so tough. Both were golden kids.
The next one from Rooney is Bellingham. No one came between wazza and Bellingham.
Owen when young was a lot more than a finisher he could take players on get crosses in etc. Look at the argentina goal he ran past half the team to score
11 prem leagues
2 champions league
1 world club cup
4 fa cups
2 league cups

I'm a bit of a HP fan you know. He's been bringing all the sauce lately.
Owen was the reason I started playing football
Thanks for the seizure warning guys...
(Genuinely would advise against those graphics in future!)
At 18 he was ridiculous. The World Cup 98, world class defenders terrified of him. The confidence he had at a time it was not accepted like it is now for a young player. Real shame with injuries with the medical support know who knows what he could have done. Great interview.
I'd pick prime Owen as England's most clinical finisher. VERY close second is Fowler
I thought he would have said Salah over Kane, just because of the pace to be honest. Those two bursting forward would be unreal
There will always be someone that comes along and takes that record, it may take a while but it will be taken
Look up Owen v 13 year old boy in goal. He should have the award stripped from him.
michael owens ballndor was the biggest scam in the awards history.
I’d agree agree with Owen all there. He was more lethal against any opponent at 18. Scholes more gifted than Stevie G but Stevie G’s all round game and big game pedigree is something different.
At 18 I agree Owen was the best of the two. Rooney reached his peak at 22-23 and then he was the best but he was no longer playing 9 but more like 10
Of course he was better than Rooney! Rooney bever done well for England or big games for united like Owen did. Owen always turned up
Henry is overrated....he could never step up in any big game but scoring hat-trick against the likes of southampton
Love this show already
He makes very good points
how is it even a question 18 year old owen vs 18 year old rooney. i find that an insult to owen. owen was phenominal at 18 even teams like brazil knew who he was
School is better than gerrard and lampard! All day long! No comparison!
Respect. For actually answering the questions.
With Robbie/Michael… you always knew you had a chance.
You had to mention those two goals in cardiff
Great video but who edited them god awful transitions? Please get em out
Poor owens gets so much diss from liverpool fans for goin to united but what was he supposed to do? Liverpool didnt come calling? Id be upset too when liverpool didnt want him back. Fair play to the guy and in the end its business.
only idiots do that mate real fans know the score
Owen was unreal. World class. Injuries distroyed him. Gerrard was a player, similar to Lampard but better. Scholes was different level. Pep, xavi, inesta would have him in there barca and spanish side. Case settled. Paul Scholes was Englands best ever player. Only problem for Paul was he was born in England
who would Scholes have replaced in the Spanish national team or Barcelona?
Do tell...
@@itsinthetreesitscoming7431it's not about replacing a player mate,
When you had the talent and football intelligence Paul scholes had than you make room for him in any team simple as that
@@ggmm6182 hahaha yeah ok.
Just skirt the fact that you'd have to remove one of Busquets, Xavi or Iniesta to "make room for him" - all three of them all-time greats.
Not in the same league. Even Ferguson knew it when he didn't "make room for him" for the CL final against them - he knew how that would have went, and so he made room for Park instead...
@@itsinthetreesitscoming7431 how is it a fact when it is your opinion not reality?
You do realise scholes was over 10 years older than busqeots and iniesta and 6 years older than xavi, different generation to them scholes was wanted by juventus and inter Milan in the late 1990s when people like Zidane and davids were there,
Ferguson chose park in that final to do a man marking tactical job, scholes was 35 years old at the time get real mate he was to old,
The fact remains when you were as good as scholes was you make room for him regardless of who else is on the pitch
Pep guardiola before the 2008 champions league final was interviewed and said scholes was the one player we want at Barcelona,
Xavi asked scholes for his shirt after the match,

Scholes was a good attacker, Gerrard did it ALL!!

Micheal Owen was an elite striker. He had to do what he had to do. Liverpool fans should take him back.
He never scored more than 20 league goals per season in his life.
@@frankdux5693 did you see him play or are you just talking
@@ArtisticFlair01 I was an adult when he came on the scene. Of course I seen him play. His best ever goals tally in the league was 19. Elite strikers can get 30 and above. Owen wasn't capable. And when he lost half a yard of pace he was finished as a player because he didn't have the skill and ability to change his game and still thrive.

@@ArtisticFlair01 for me strikers job is putting the ball in the net. Elite strikers achieve 25+ league goals per season. Owen never achieved this.
Apart from Messi and r9 Rooney was top three
I think the more nuanced answer with some more context has to be that Owen was the better striker but Rooney was the better player at 18. Also Owen was just a super sub in World cup 1998 were as Rooney was the best player and first name on the team sheet for England in Euro 2004, the country was relying on him to carry the team despite all the other super stars like Gerard, Lampard, Beckham, scholes and Owen.
Owen was definitely a very dangerous player to any defender in the world at that stage but I would say Owen would be your more likely match winner but Rooney would be your more likely man of the match. Lets not forget Rooney was probably the best player on the pitch in the first game against France with 2 teams full of super stars. It was only when he was subbed off near the end that Zidane was able to steal the show at the death.
Every question a baller! Remembered his Ballon D’Or, but forgot his two golden boots by nineteen. He’s right when he says nobody will beat the latter record. Not dissimilar to Mike Tyson’s record of being youngest ever heavyweight champion at twenty years old: who can you see besting that?
Mike Tyson haha don't make me laugh mate the most overrated boxer in history all the best boxers of his generation beat Lewis holyfield twice etc
And Tyson is a convicted rapist don't disrespect a person like Michael Owen comparing his to Mike Tyson

Such different players. Owens prime didn't last long enough. Wayne had far more to his game, but Owen was as good a striker as you'll ever see with pace to burn. I'd take Rooney
