Owen top interview. To win back to back golden boots at 17 and 18 in an era riddled with top strikers showed the absolute levels of this man - clear of Rooney at that age and i'd even argue clear of Mbappe at 17/18. Injuries ruined Owen. I'm a Liverpool fan and still have respect for Owen despite not agreeing with his move to United - facts are facts was an animal. Respect for the truth about Gerrard but in reality Owen was four years ahead of Gerrard - Gerrard came to the fore in 2001 despite rotating with MacAllister - what was Owen doing then? Winning the Ballon Dor thats what 😅 Liverpool and England overburdening ruined him.

I think the more nuanced answer with some more context has to be that Owen was the better striker but Rooney was the better player at 18. Also Owen was just a super sub in World cup 1998 were as Rooney was the best player and first name on the team sheet for England in Euro 2004, the country was relying on him to carry the team despite all the other super stars like Gerard, Lampard, Beckham, scholes and Owen.
Owen was definitely a very dangerous player to any defender in the world at that stage but I would say Owen would be your more likely match winner but Rooney would be your more likely man of the match. Lets not forget Rooney was probably the best player on the pitch in the first game against France with 2 teams full of super stars. It was only when he was subbed off near the end that Zidane was able to steal the show at the death.
