That chord progression ain’t easy for guitar. I’m always amazed by it. It could have been simplified or arranged a lot simpler at many points during the song but it keeps changing! It’s the vocal melody that holds it all together. A genius bit of songwriting and kudos to Elvis Costello who insisted that Paul sing it instead of Glenn. After it was cut even Glenn couldn’t deny that that was the right decision. People ask “what does a good producer do” . Exactly what Costello did for Squeeze with this song!!
Paul Carrack - Vocals and keyboards Nick Lowe - Vocals and bass guitar John Hiatt - Vocals and guitar (white Fender Telecaster) Martin Belmont - Guitar, the tall guy playing a Fender Stratocaster in pelham blue Bobby Irwing - drums - I'm not sure about Irwing, but I think it's him; died of cancer in 2015 (RIP); was Nick's touring drummer - and Van Morrisons favorite drummer.
Awesome song....Loved Carrack and Co. In Squeeze....Laughed when they incorrectly titled the song...'ATTEMPTED'....instead of...'Tempted'...Amazing live performance.
I didn't realise Hiatt had done some gigs with Lowe's band in '83 when they did "Riding with the King" together. Love his recreating the backing vocals of the record with Basher and Irwin. Nowadays, there would be extra backing singers to do it but it feels so much better done this way; beautiful.
wow. this is some great stuff. the rockpalast was THE place for all the tours to play. lost in translation on the song title, attempted, LoL. a young paul carrack, john hiatt, and nick lowe. all these guys went on to have stellar careers in the music business.

That's weird coz I first saw Bobby Irwin at the Lyceum in 78 backing Lene Lovich and I distinctly remember thinking "that drummer looks a bit like Barry Manilow". That was from a fair distance though. Up close maybe not so much. RIP
There is another live version on RUclips with Andy Newmark on drums. He knocks it out of the park. Newmark as a drummer is a thoroughbred sadly this drummer is nowhere near that calibre. Lifeless drumming.
Greatest song ever. Paul's voice is so perfect for it. A timeless classic.
I'm Tempted to say a perfect song.
I’ll never tire of hearing Paul Carrack’s voice the same with the Paul Rodgers and Chris Cornell
Raw. How this song should be listened to.
I agree! This version is jammin. Love it and Paul Carrack is an amazing and sucn an underrated talent.
Paul Carrack, the voice of a generation

@@chipgaasche4933 you're right, at least 2 generations. 1st with Ace in the 70s and then with Squeeze in the 80s. ;-)
When I first heard this song I thought Paul had written it, it seems tailor-made for his voice and the chord progression is very keyboardesque

god what a voice. the inflections, control and tone. Paul is LEGEND.
Wow, a great live version from Paul. Nick Lowe's soulful bass playing is so deep and well recorded on this video.
All three are great artists that can also play the role of sidemen without their egos getting bruised.
Awesome song....Loved Carrack and Co. In Squeeze....Laughed when they incorrectly titled the song...'ATTEMPTED'....instead of...'Tempted'...Amazing live performance.
I give them a lot of credit for the attempt.
Incredible piece of music. This guy is absolutely amazing!
" HOW LONG HAS THIS BEEN GOING ON "
Brought ME Here God Bless This Super Talented Man.
"How Long..." Was so impressive , sounded on another level in the mid 70s.
All of them sre great! And that circle of talent extends far beyond them.
Am 37 now and paul is still one of my fave artists , god bless Paul x

These 3 dudes are living legends
Nice set of musicians doing this great tune some justice!
So good! He's got a great voice!
Timeless song🔥
Excellent! Paul Carrack never fails to pull it off!
Defeats the purpose of wearing it, doesn’t it?
F@$king brilliant! I love this song!
Thanks for this. I can die happy now.

Ooh - bit of a 'greenie' from Mr Lowe on the the bass there at 1:44. Tilbrook's chord progressions can make a brave man weep... :D
God I love this version. :)
God this is tight! Well done...
Great, two of my favourite artistes, any more ??
Paul Carrack, are you sure you're not from Chicago? Hot damn.
Absolutely Fucking Awesome
Awesome vocals!
Mighty!
What a talented human,
1:45 Nick Lowe on bass -- ooooppss
Squeeze was from the UK.
Marci Sorrell no shit sherlock !!
TOM, make this the most watched utube video ever. lu dad
I liked the ATEMPTED screen crawl
💜❤️💙
Thanks.
Great Drumer Mr.Andy Newmark,
I do believe that is Bobby Irwin
Yes, Bobby Irwin
Paul Carrack should be cloned, he just cannot be substituted with anybody else.
Sweet voice - like on the record. Think I see Brinsley Schwarz there also👍
I don’t think Paul is capable of singing off key.
IF... you find a better live performance on youtube of a roots R&S song please send it to me so I will someday find it. I bid you PEACE
Where are the dancing girls? Dammit! Still a great song.
Where are the 3 chicks??
Singer’s Singer
I was really hoping Hiatt would sing a verse. Still great though!
Lowe should’ve taken Costello’s line, that would’ve made so much sense.
Nicely attempted
No one ducked?
Barry Manilow on drums.

It's Bobby Irwin (RIP), you dork.
Pity the drummer sped it up too much….
Bit of a struggle for Paul huh?
Not at all. He's just adding variations.
