      He’s also why Carrack was the lead on this song and not Tillbrook. He didn’t like Tillbrook’s version and reproduced it with Carrack.

      @@schmedrake5429 Glenn Tilbrook and Elvis Costello also sang parts of the second verse. Costello's parts are mimed in this video by John Bentley and Chris Difford.
      Still, a great idea for Costello to give the song to Paul Carrack to sing. Good thing too - Tilbrook, Difford and Bentley all put this amongst their favourite Squeeze songs.

      @@antster1983 There is a video on RUclips with Glenn Tillbrook singing the song with Daryl Hall. And he sings it the way Carrack did. He still sounds good. I love the entire Singles album, but Tempted is my favorite of all the songs.

    This is a classic recording. In the second verse, when the band shares vocals, each member with a distinctly different voice, we witness something most rarely done. Very powerful.

    Glen Tillbrook did this song at a solo gig in my hometown and he told the audience to sing the entire song while he played guitar. I was in the audience and we sang the entire song word for word. He loved it as much as we did.

      Played next door to where I lived in Tempe.
      Played a hide and seek game with him backstage.
      It was a weird but pretty funny story.
      I had to lead black coffee in bed as he kind of lost track.
      Ya had to be there.
      Was hilarious but awesome.
      Glad I got to see a great show.

      Just like his compatriot, another PC, Peter Cox, of Go West fame. He also has that Blue-eyed Soul vice which Carrack was praised for. I would admit though that Carrack can hit those high notes even better than Coxy. I like both of them alike though

      He just put out a "50th Anniversary" version of his greatest hits today, with these songs redone this year. Living Years is a lot more choir focused. A lot of the others were from the original greatest hits, like tempted I think is the 2012 version of it. But all in all I think there are 8 or 9 2024 versions of songs on there and it sounds pretty damn good. Highly recommend checking it out. Was a good 1hr+ of my morning today. :)

      Clive Bindley Yes. A very good singer. A proper musician who doesn’t court publicity or fame, but any he does get is because of his talent. A lesson the X-factor crowd should heed!

    Originally Tillbrook was to sing the lead, but producer Elvis Costello had Carrack try it and decided he liked it for the recording. I agree as it gives the song such tonal variety.

      During that period 81-82, both Costello and Squeeze had a dozen classics each. Saw them in Jan. 81. My first major show. Lasting memories. You just don't hear songs like Pulling Mussels From A Shell, Clubland, Strict Time ,Lovers Walk, Someone Else's Heart anymore.

    When I hear this it reminds me of being a young man living on the outskirts of Auburn Maine in 1978, using my thumb or just walking uptown. -and by Gid their was a laundry and a church in the hill, this beautiful gem brings me back to that special time and place….. Tom Struska 👍

    What makes this song so good is the complex chord structure. There's some pretty way out chords in this that work so well as a sequence in combination with the bass line.

      For a normal unmusical person who can't figure out a chord progression it doesn't feel "complex". Just one of those few songs that is 11 on a scale from 0 to 10.

    Not sure how this album has been out for years now and I am only just hearing this for the first time in December 2024! It came up randomly on my Pandora and I typically skip over ANY Christmas song but this had me instantly hooked! I think I'm on my 5th time listening and I have forwarded it to my friends who are called Holly, Carol, Candy & Joy!
    Can't wait to listen to this whole album!
