Lyrics below:
The case was pulled from under the bed
She made a call to a sympathetic friend and made arrangements
The door was closed, there was a note
I couldn't be bothered, maybe I'll choke, no more engagements
With where-have-you-beens and far away frowns
Trying to be good by not being 'round
And here in the bar, the piano man's found
Another nail for my heart
And here in the bar, the piano man's found
Another nail for my heart
That stupid old bug that kills only love
I want to be good, is that not enough
So play me the song that makes it so tough
Another nail for my heart
Then play me the song that makes it so tough
Another nail for my heart
I had excuses, those little boy lies
That she computed by watching my eyes and told me firmly
She couldn't stand it, I'm bad on her heart
She dropped her make-up and I found the bar, now it concerns me
I've had a bad time, now love is resigned
I've been such a fool, I've loved and goodbyed
So here in the bar, the piano man's found
Another nail for my heart
And here in the bar, the piano man's found
Another nail for my heart
And here in the bar, the piano man's found
Another nail for my heart
And here in the bar, the piano man's found
Another nail for my heart
And here in the bar, the piano man's found
Another nail for my heart

In 1999, the singer came into the bar I worked at in Tribeca NYC, nobody recognized him but me anyway, I put the song black coffee in bed on the jukebox and he jumped on the bar and sang to the song, was an epic moment in my life, love this band so much, always have
Omg, love this story!! I lived in NYC during those years and 1999 was by far my favorite years out of a string of outstanding years!! Almost close to tears whenever I recall NYC in the 90s. Having said that, I’m crazy bout Squeeze and cannot imagine an epic moment like that. Whatever happened to that NY? Downtown still had its edge...memories lol
Sounds like a bunch bs, to be perfectly honest. I can't imagine Glenn Tilbrook debasing himself in such a way.
@@sabrinaphillips916 I had some of the absolute best times of my life in NYC in the late 90's.
A beautiful time in the history of the city.
@@josephhertzberg2734 totally agree! It’s so nice to hear from people who were there who also witnessed such a carefree moment in that city. It seemed everyone was healthy, happy, prosperous and free. New restaurants, interesting conversations with people you just met, a Hamptons share with 40 other people lol. It was a blast
Fantastic ❤
Anyone listening in 2024?
Of course!
No, I'm listening in 1979.
Yes, always
Absolutely 😂🎉🎉🎉
Yep, and it's 3 years older than me. I missed out for a bit.
I've just realised squeeze are one of the greatest ever british pop groups.
At the age of 13 I was going out & buying stuff like this. I may not have achieved much in life but I give myself credit for a great taste in music from an early age.
My first single bought was Ian dury and the blockheads hit me with your rhythm stick, I was 10. Proud of that one.
Dude, most no one achieves anything in life. No matter how extraordinary or unique we may be in our generation, the best we can do is have Squeeze stuck in our heads when everyone else prefers pure crap.
@@mydogslikeboiledeggs7094 perfectly said. Thank you.
I have never enjoyed a comments section as much as I have a Squeeze one. I fucking love you all. You're brilliant.
likewise,thx
Jools pushing his piano down the street. Priceless!
Only JOOLS could do that, brilliant.
No-one wrote a hook like Glenn Tilbrook and no-one wrote lyrics like Chris Difford. It's criminal that they weren't more commercially successful. A massively under rated and under appreciated band.
I once read an article speculating that they could be the next Lennon and McCartney as they were on the rise to legends
Peter Whent well I certainly appreciate them, when nail in your heart came out I thought it was one of the best pop records of all time.
No-one sounds like quite a talent.
@@grantharrismusic I see what you did there 😀
@@peterwhent66 😀
Glenn Tilbrook has to be one of the most underrated guitarists in rock and pop music. His solos are melodic, amazing and never try to sound like blues or rock licks. They are all melody that perfectly mimic his own voice.
A brilliant song composer, one of the best, EVER.
I watched a video of gig they did recently and he was literally shredding still. I had no idea he was so good
Amazing. Way underrated !!!!!!!!
He is amazing. Great voice and a wonderful guitarist
@@maureenwood217 in a great band.
Glenn's guitar solo is as good as anyone's out there! Absolutely the best!
His song writing is not to bad, either.
An excellent solo there to be sure. Glenn plays his guitar in much the same way as Jimmy Page does in terms of how he holds it and handles it. To my eye,the similarities are almost uncanny.
Squeeze just makes me feel _at home_. No politics, no social media, just perfect musicianship and poetry. God love Squeeze.
Copy that. The best story tellers ever! I love Squeeze.
didn't listen to their lyrics so much though if you thought no politics, I think some don't realise politics is everywhere most of it isn't party politics
Well said, dead right!
Now everything's political.
@@newtoncooper4085 Hang in there friend- seriously- deep breaths. Songs like this remind us there is a reality beyond political grandstanding. There are things worth working for that politics can't touch: Art, family, friends. keep to your core values, whatever they are. And play more "Squeeze" at parties! You'll be oh so cool.
Tilbrook is a wonderful guitarist on top of his exceptional voice. But it's the brilliant songwriting that is the genuine gold in everything Squeeze did.
My mum and dad divorced when I was very young. On the weekeneds I spent with him he would play music (and mony python) tapes in the car as we travelled from mum's to his. Squeeze, Blondie, The Jam. Taught me what great music was. Love you dad.
PS - Up the junction always was a favourite of his lol
I had the honor of opening for Tilbrook on one of his solo tours. I was gobsmacked at what a monster guitar player he was, and what a performer. The songs and voice were a given, but...WOW.
I had a feeling he was a beast on guitar. You can tell by how he's soloing here in this video. And you just know he got ALL the babes too. I hope he's doing well.
Saw them live 2 years ago. I was AMAZED at gis guitar playing. he has the chops
@@zephead843 Oh, he's a total beast and completely under-recognised. Listen to e.g. Slightly Drunk, Is That Love and so many others.
Squeeeeeeze! ❤
I saw him play a private party about 25 yrs ago. Just him with an acoustic guitar. He did Hendrix’s Voodoo Chile. He was brilliant
I can't get over this song. It has like ten hooks! Every part of the song is a new excellent melody! Just brilliant.
This song had me from the first Bass line intro... So simple and catchy.
Totally agree... masterclass in pop songwriting. And so exquisitely fun!
More hooks than a fisherman
Yup if u play guitar this song rocks, songwriting 101
@@ds94703 ah good ear my friend
My dad on the drums!
Cool!
Your Dad is a killer drummer.
Again, as I said earlier, Gilson Lavis is a killer drummer. I've been a drummer for 26 years, and I've always regarded Mr. Lavis as a very underrated drummer. More so, Squeeze were and still are a underrated band. But his overall approach to drumming is great. Awesome pocket. Brilliant fills. Always tasteful. All extremely vital and complimentary to the songs. Also, in general, its fun to watch him play. So much energy. Yes sir. There's a reason why he played with Jerry Lee Lewis, Dolly Parton & Chuck Berry. Incredible man. Sorry to get all fan boy. But the man deserves more cred. No one can argue that. Cheers.
Gilson is a great drummer I've seen him play live a couple of times with Jools and he is top drawer. Smooth effortless style he should have more recognition as he's right up there!
And a brilliant one at that--you must be proud! 👍🏼
Amazing song, fantastic guitar lead, storytelling lyrics. There’s not one member of Squeeze that doesn’t make a substantial contribution to each and every song.
Squeeze are criminally underrated. Great band. Sublime songs.
The guitar solo is perfection. Not one note too much, or too little. It compliments the song's melody line perfectly. The placing of it in the song is a breath of fresh air too. After the first verse, right out of left field. Tilbrook: "Right, here's a perfect guitar solo where you weren't expecting a guitar solo... now, back to the song".
@@nordvegfigg7746 I've ALWAYS said that about the solo. Perfect balance of form and function. Glad others agree.
These guys were magic. Many hits but it could have gone further. Maybe it was that tongue in cheek english humour that the yanks would never get in a million years, dunno. They should have ruled the world.
@@davidcorcoran9959 Probably. They were a phenomenal band.
A brilliantly written song with one of the best guitar solos ever recorded. The video is the icing on the cake. It's perfect.
The lead solo is out of the top drawer. an absolute belter.
Like the Waterloo Sunset quote in that brief solo too ... excellent for contrasting the story lines of the two songs
The song is so great that the beauty of the lead break is almost lost in the shuffle. Brilliant phrasing!
Can't believe how many hooks this single song has within it.
I'll believe til the day I die (and I've been playing for close to 40 years now), that this song has *the* best guitar solo of the entire 80s of any pop genre.
One needs listen to some XTC.
Agreed - my favorite solo too.
Really? Why?
I'm not sure I'd put it number one but it's a quality choice.
Absolutely. A minute ago, I commented that this solo is about as good as I've ever heard, but it is definitely the best one to come out of the 80's! I never get tired of hearing it or the complete song, for that matter!
oh damn, forgot how brilliant this band was. Will have to get their records again..
@JONATHAN SUTCLIFFE hey Jonathan, hope you`re having a good day. (myself; Squeeze - ANimH 14:25 today!!!) don`t know if we`re about the same age? but couldn`t agree more! bestest wishes, lou xxx
hey Greg, I hope you`re having a good day. My exact thoughts!!! but around two years ago!!! bestest wishes, lou xxx
“Has it ever struck you that life is all memory, except for the one present moment that goes by you so quick you hardly catch it going?”― Tennessee Williams....
Thanks for the quote. I love Tennessee Williams. I love Squeeze too.
Yes. It's always the future. And life is constant change.
The older u get the weirder time seems. When exactly is a dream?
@@spensert4933 life is but a dream
As Einstein said, the passing of time is merely a stubbornly persistent illusion.
Definitely one of Squeeze's best songs - makes you feel like singing aloud; superb lyrics and music - a really catchy tune that you can't ignore.
One of the greatest songs of all time, by one of the greatest (and most underrated) bands of all time.... and THAT guitar solo,..... one of the best ever
I will listen to this song for as long as I live. There’s something truly amazing about it
Me too because I am a qualified lesbian
This is their finest hour.. I cannot tire of this.. Way ahead of their time... Brilliant.
not ahead they were their time
Yeah it doesn't get any better...
Nah their next album east side story was their finest hour.
Huge in the New Wave scene. I can still see myself dancing to this.
William One of the cathiest records ever made met Glen Tilbrook recently before he came on stage to play,a really modest and pleasant person.
I really appreciate his talent and was a fan of sqeeze when I was a youngster in the late 1970s, such a great time for music .
That guitar solo is hitting all the changes. And those are not run of the mill pop chord changes! This tune is on my list of favorite 80s songs.
An absolute masterpiece. Memory lane here I come
Such a slick guitar solo. Awesome Yamaha SG too. Tillbrook is both a great guitarist and lyricist.
Chris Difford wrote the lyrics, Tillbrook the music. both brilliant.
The most perfect pop sing ever written. I have listened to this song almost every day ever since it came out 34 (!) years ago and never get tired of it.
Hard to argue with your assessment. Sounds as good now as it did then.
Exactly.
The most perfect pop song ever (with the best guitar solo ever)? Gotta be in the top 5, at least..
It's amazingly tight. : )
Forgotten solos maybe sadly they never jumped the pond with the same impact they made in the u.k
And i never understood why, cuz this rocks
A wonderfully tasty solo from Glen !
Solo is my favorite part.
Kids this is how u write a melodic interesting three minute tune.....this is how its done, these two guys were super song writers
Everything about this song is perfect: the melody, the chorus, the lyrics, the guitar solo, the arrangement. I like the video as well.
That little flourish when Gilson Lavis is switching between the cymbals at 1:16 is so smooth.
I’ve just discovered Squeeze. I wasn’t born until 1997. I don’t know how or why I feel nostalgic for a band and a time that I wasn’t around for. They’re amazing. Every song I’ve listened to is perfect.
I didn't really appreciate Squeeze as a young man, but age, and playing guitar myself, I now have a lot of respect for their talent. Tilbrook especially, is just awesome.
A TRULY GREAT BAND.
Criminally underrated band
your gonna do time for that ....again he ...he
Who is underrating them?
Not by me they wasn't
this means they were way ahead of they're time.
Not for those worthy enough to recognize
This album evokes nostalgia for my youth more than any other. It makes me a little teary-eyed. ❤️
GREAT DAYS, BEST EVER.
Just seen them live this past week. The boys can still do it. Great gig. Forgot how many and how good the songs are. Peppered my teen years and for that I’m forever grateful
Argy Bargy was one of the greatest pop albums of my youth and I loved this track in particular. I will always adore Squeeze.
the part where it’s all dark and it’s just glenn shredding on his shiny red guitar. yeah that’s cinema
Absolutely brilliant song brilliant group
The greatest line up of one of the greatest British bands of all time
that solo @0:51 is simply outstanding
So many brilliant tunes (and bands) came out of the post punk and new wave scene. But this song scratches that nostalgic itch like no other. Tilbrook's voice, the swirling guitar and bass lines, and that perfect driving beat. Oh...but then lets top it off with a masterclass guitar solo. What the hell was that!!??
Squeeze were true masters of their craft and cruelly under rated. They deserved to be much more famous than they were.
I grew up on this song. My mom always played their "Singles- 50s and Under" tape in her car. Recently burned her a cd and have been listening to this lately! Love Squeeze!
I hung out with these cats at a hotel bar in Burlington Vermont in the 90's right after their concert at U.V.M! I saw Squeeze, in NYC, in the early 80's as well! I must say probably one of the best live rock experiences of my life! Great folks to drink with as well! I always admired their style, sound and songwriting but their onstage antics, with Jules as MC, was a show in itself. I remember one of the guys doing several somersaults guitar in hand and never missing a beat. They were all very young then and so was I. In the words of Bob Hope "Thanks for the memories"! You guys were and still are an inspiration to me and many many others!
The most underrated band ever.
Been listening to this great song for 40 years now. Still don't know half the words.
I want to be good is that not enough?
Brilliant.
Possibly thee most underrated band of the 1980's Squeeze were awesome during the 80's and I can't ever remember them making a bad record. And this was another classic.
I absolutely love this song, what a guitar solo, awesome.
The guitar solo makes my soul feel 40 years younger.
Shamefully underrated guitarist, Tilbrook. What a solo. Clapton and all that would be proud of it.
Its awesome , very proficent guitar playing
YEP....fantastic guitar solo
Extremely tasty solo !
@@TheHumbuckerboy yes it is......fantastic solo
Awesome solo...Tilbrook has always looked so cool playing too.
There’s so much going on in this song, but the thing that always floors me is how unusual it is to have a guitar break after just the first verse and chorus. And yet, for all that’s unusual about it, it makes sense here. It’s almost like it gives the listener time to breathe, to reflect, like they just had a shot of whiskey and now they’re contemplating life. Unexpected and totally perfect.
The first time I heard "If I Didn't Love You" I thought the record did indeed have a scratch. I love the way Squeeze deviates from pop music formulas.
Well said!
And I’m having a single malt right now. Thanks for the suggestion.
@@worldissuesmatter1643 cheers
Are there rules about songwriting?
One of my favourite Squeeze songs, it's got such energy and is really well sung.
Me too because I am a qualified lesbian
In 2021 and still blessing my ears with Squeeze
its so cool that years after this song came out, peeps are still commenting on it positively.
Always a fun group.
Best songwriters of the 80's...Hands Down!
One of the best songs humanity has ever created
Difford and Tilbrook, the Lennon and McCartney of the 70’s,80’s and 90’s. Plus Tilbrook has the ultimate power pop voice, perfection.
I always felt that Glenn was incredibly under rated as a guitarist. If you have the chance to see him perform on his own, he'll show you some of his best work.
His writing and singing were so good, his guitar playing got lost in the shuffle.
Thumbs up if you remember when this hit the radio!
Theresa Q to right all the people that like squeeze. We are all cool for cats. Ha Ha
Sadly lol yup i was there i saw them on a canadian show called the new music....promoting argybargy.....i was 11
Im old , ugh !!!
@@imannonymous7707, another Canadian here, we got all the best stuff from the UK back in the day didn't we! I was just raving about what a great year 1979 was (on an XTC "Making Plans For Nigel" video), Argybargy came out just after that. A fantastic time for music.
internet radio for me
Yes I believe it came close to #1 briefly. In those years I loved a certain AM radio station. Listened all the time to CKOC.
So many great songs from Squeeze. Very underrated.
Bloody brilliant.
I saw them recently at the salt shed in Chicago and they were absolutely fantastic. Thrilling lovely and beautiful.
Grab the silver hammer and get to clinking. This band and their music is beyond genuis.
I cannot stop loving this SONG!
me too.
I was 21 when Squeeze released this song. Still really like to this day! Awesome vocals, lyrics, arrangement and instrumental performance. It’s so damn hooky! 👍🇨🇦
One of my all time favorite guitar solos. Short, simple and melodic.
One of the greatest pop songs and great guitar solo!
Of all the great squeeze sounds this is my favourite. Difford and Tilbrook are geniuses.
Difford and Tilbrook wrote some of the most perfect pop songs of the late '70's and early '80's. Brilliant.
Those guys should be Brit legends! Stones, Beatles and the like should induduct them into they're club! Never gets old...just let me!
A BRILLIANT COMBINATION.
I love these old pop videos - simple, effective, a mimed performance, no stupid symbolism. Perfect! (Oh, and it’s one of my favourite Squeeze songs too)
I met Chris Difford once at a muffler shop in Bleeding Horse, just south of North Bleeding Horse. He was an absolute gent, draining a pint and lifting two bartenders over his head to win a bet. I later found out he was in this band.
Lol he seems a nutcase, as does Glenn :)
fantastic !
Extraordinary to think that this barely scraped into the Top 20 while the equally brilliant follow-up, Pulling Mussels From A Shell, didn't even make the Top 40! Argybargy, the album which both tracks came from, was a gem which literally screams "1980!" at me whenever I play it.
Most underrated band ever lyrics sublime loved to have seen them
Certainly, my favorite Squeeze song.
Best guitar solo in the history of power pop! Who else but Glenn Tillbrook could have composed it? He makes it looks so easy. A very very under-rated guitarist.
That guitar solo he does at 0.52 is absolutely out the door fucking brilliant.
Amaaaaaazing, great memories of when your only worry was who was number 1 and on top of the pops on a Thursday night xxx
Just a bunch of young lads playing music and having fun... And the songwriting came so naturally.
This song in particular brings me right back to my freshman year in college. A friend of mine, who had a single room, set his stereo up. You would hear it in the afternoon and in the evenings. it just brings back. Great memories, perhaps some of the best.
CANNOT BEAT GREAT MEMORIES MATE.
My Favorite Squeeze song:
Intro : A
Verse: A
Bridge transition: A+
Chorus : A+
into the SOLO
A++
One of my favorite 80's bands. Got to see them live. Super talented.
The blues will never stop inspiring people....its the root of western music...its ingrained in our memory and its the reason this song rocks
I went to a concert recently (9/18/21) where Squeeze was the opening act for Hall and Oates and they killed, despite me only knowing one song from them. People have even said that they did better than H&O. They both were amazing.
I'm a huge Squeeze fan and saw that same show two weeks before yours. They were amazing and the couple sitting next to me were just like you, only knew one song, and they were blown away.
I’m green. I would loved to see both on one night.
I am 46 now and was 11 years old when "Hourglass" was played a LOT on MTV in 1987 and that was the first time I THOUGHT I'd ever heard a Squeeze song. I ended up buying their Greatest Hits album many years later and discovered several I knew but didn't know it was them including "Another Nail in my Heart", "Pulling Mussels" and of course "Tempted" where Glenn gets screwed only singing 3 lines of the already shortened 2nd verse. But it amazes me how anyone could only know 1 measley Squeeze song.
Another great song from Squeeze!
Went for a haircut earlier and this came on in the background. Had to listen to it when I got home. Fantastic band and talented musicians.
What a sick solo.
One of the best pop songs ever written 🤩
Squeeze forever
Quality.
The band dancing near the end is priceless. Ahh when videos were actually worth watching.
My brother use to play them on repeat . I fell totally in love . They made some incredible music
Saw Squeeze in 1987 at The Universal Ampitheater... seems like yesterday.
Time flies and yet their music is timeless,
I remember watch this video on a late night video program before MTV debuted(NightFlight?).There we’re only about 5 videos in rotation! This was one of them.
I had heard of the Squeeze and had heard a few songs but didnt realize how truly amazing this band is. Tilbrook and Diffort are a creative force. What a wonderful treat to discover these guys and their fabulous song book.
SUPREME.
I adore this video! Jools missed the entire performance but was able to show up to give a great glissando
I was there the first time around.
This played nonstop on the radio in Canada. Good times!
Simply one of the best pop/rock bands ever.
loving me some Squeeze, non stop listening tonight, forgot how many killer hooks they have...bloody smashing.
"She couldn't stand it; I'm bad on her heart": I've thought that was a brilliant line since this was released when I was a teenager and still do!
That drum and lead rythm just really moves AHEAD!
