Best guitar solo in the history of power pop! Who else but Glenn Tillbrook could have composed it? He makes it looks so easy. A very very under-rated guitarist.
I hung out with these cats at a hotel bar in Burlington Vermont in the 90's right after their concert at U.V.M! I saw Squeeze, in NYC, in the early 80's as well! I must say probably one of the best live rock experiences of my life! Great folks to drink with as well! I always admired their style, sound and songwriting but their onstage antics, with Jules as MC, was a show in itself. I remember one of the guys doing several somersaults guitar in hand and never missing a beat. They were all very young then and so was I. In the words of Bob Hope "Thanks for the memories"! You guys were and still are an inspiration to me and many many others!
I remember watch this video on a late night video program before MTV debuted(NightFlight?).There we’re only about 5 videos in rotation! This was one of them.
I went to a concert recently (9/18/21) where Squeeze was the opening act for Hall and Oates and they killed, despite me only knowing one song from them. People have even said that they did better than H&O. They both were amazing.
I'm a huge Squeeze fan and saw that same show two weeks before yours. They were amazing and the couple sitting next to me were just like you, only knew one song, and they were blown away.
I am 46 now and was 11 years old when "Hourglass" was played a LOT on MTV in 1987 and that was the first time I THOUGHT I'd ever heard a Squeeze song. I ended up buying their Greatest Hits album many years later and discovered several I knew but didn't know it was them including "Another Nail in my Heart", "Pulling Mussels" and of course "Tempted" where Glenn gets screwed only singing 3 lines of the already shortened 2nd verse. But it amazes me how anyone could only know 1 measley Squeeze song.
I grew up on this song. My mom always played their "Singles- 50s and Under" tape in her car. Recently burned her a cd and have been listening to this lately! Love Squeeze!
I was 21 when Squeeze released this song. Still really like to this day! Awesome vocals, lyrics, arrangement and instrumental performance. It’s so damn hooky! 👍🇨🇦
I always felt that Glenn was incredibly under rated as a guitarist. If you have the chance to see him perform on his own, he'll show you some of his best work.
I met Chris Difford once at a muffler shop in Bleeding Horse, just south of North Bleeding Horse. He was an absolute gent, draining a pint and lifting two bartenders over his head to win a bet. I later found out he was in this band.
This song in particular brings me right back to my freshman year in college. A friend of mine, who had a single room, set his stereo up. You would hear it in the afternoon and in the evenings. it just brings back. Great memories, perhaps some of the best.
I'm from Canada. We've been good to Squeeze for many years, almost decades. I'm sad that Paul Carrak left the band but they went on..."Hourglass" is one of my favourite songs! The humble request I have, is could Mr Tilbrook put together a tour (with other members of Squeeze, if possible), to showcase the ignored talent you guys had. There's a retro-renaisance "new wave" thing happening on this side of the ocean. It was just good music when I was a little younger...
Awesome song. Recently got into listening to squeeze. Fair to say I've missed out. Kudos to the drummer downing the pint in one at rhe end of the video 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
These songs from these gents always bring back wonderful memories of summer in the late 70s early 80s. This song and 'Pulling Muscles from a Shell' particularly. Squeeze would be on the car radio, a bunch of us guys cruising around the circuit in an old Chevy, trying to look cool - and stay cool with no A/C! And at night on the beach, we'd hear Squeeze coming out of an old boombox sitting in the sand as we played volleyball to the backdrop of the sounds on the boardwalk, the smell of burgers and hot dogs, cotton candy and pretzels wafting through the air. Great times. No smartphones, no social media. Phones? Yeah. There was a payphone on the boardwalk. It even worked sometimes, too! Social media? Sure! We had that. That's when we'd sit around with popcorn and drinks being very social and enjoy media, like a bad movie on cable or watch that new thing called MTV. Life wasn't a puzzle. It was splendid.
Extraordinary to think that this barely scraped into the Top 20 while the equally brilliant follow-up, Pulling Mussels From A Shell, didn't even make the Top 40! Argybargy, the album which both tracks came from, was a gem which literally screams "1980!" at me whenever I play it.

Been listening to this great song for 40 years now. Still don't know half the words.
That little flourish when Gilson Lavis is switching between the cymbals at 1:16 is so smooth.
One of my favourite Squeeze songs, it's got such energy and is really well sung.
Me too because I am a qualified lesbian
An amazing guitar solo by Tillbrook.Don't hear that kind of musicianship in pop music today.Actually, you don't hear musicians.
I respectfully disagree that there's no musicianship today, but I enthusiastically agree about this solo.
Making Plans for Nigel is another great gtr. solo.
chris difford a pure gentleman met him afther a gig in a pub in eltham south london
So tasty...technical but not too much. One of my favorite leads ever.
oleole52 good ones are all silent due to council rules on live music 😬
I cannot stop loving this SONG!
me too.
I absolutely love this song, what a guitar solo, awesome.
I remember watch this video on a late night video program before MTV debuted(NightFlight?).There we’re only about 5 videos in rotation! This was one of them.
I saw them recently at the salt shed in Chicago and they were absolutely fantastic. Thrilling lovely and beautiful.
Grab the silver hammer and get to clinking. This band and their music is beyond genuis.
In 2021 and still blessing my ears with Squeeze
I went to a concert recently (9/18/21) where Squeeze was the opening act for Hall and Oates and they killed, despite me only knowing one song from them. People have even said that they did better than H&O. They both were amazing.
I'm a huge Squeeze fan and saw that same show two weeks before yours. They were amazing and the couple sitting next to me were just like you, only knew one song, and they were blown away.
I’m green. I would loved to see both on one night.
Went for a haircut earlier and this came on in the background. Had to listen to it when I got home. Fantastic band and talented musicians.
I can assure you that I am a very straight man, but..1980 Glenn Tillbrook was dreamy.
I grew up on this song. My mom always played their "Singles- 50s and Under" tape in her car. Recently burned her a cd and have been listening to this lately! Love Squeeze!
So many great songs from Squeeze. Very underrated.
Bloody brilliant.
An absolute gem
Perfect in every way
If I were clever I could elaborate
but alas
My Favorite Squeeze song:
Intro : A
Verse: A
Bridge transition: A+
Chorus : A+
into the SOLO
A++
The greatest line up of one of the greatest British bands of all time
its so cool that years after this song came out, peeps are still commenting on it positively.
Always a fun group.
One of my all time favorite guitar solos. Short, simple and melodic.
Just a bunch of young lads playing music and having fun... And the songwriting came so naturally.
His writing and singing were so good, his guitar playing got lost in the shuffle.
Most underrated band ever lyrics sublime loved to have seen them
Such well-played, well-written and well-meant genius such as this was just too good for this world.....
+andyh109 Amen!
They're still alive!
;)
Dude, they’re all still alive.
I met Chris Difford once at a muffler shop in Bleeding Horse, just south of North Bleeding Horse. He was an absolute gent, draining a pint and lifting two bartenders over his head to win a bet. I later found out he was in this band.
Lol he seems a nutcase, as does Glenn :)
fantastic !
Saw Squeeze in 1987 at The Universal Ampitheater... seems like yesterday.
Time flies and yet their music is timeless,
One of the best pop songs ever written 🤩
Squeeze forever
Quality.
Would not trade anything in the world for growing up in the 80's. We had the best of everything. Squeeze included.
This song in particular brings me right back to my freshman year in college. A friend of mine, who had a single room, set his stereo up. You would hear it in the afternoon and in the evenings. it just brings back. Great memories, perhaps some of the best.
CANNOT BEAT GREAT MEMORIES MATE.
The blues will never stop inspiring people....its the root of western music...its ingrained in our memory and its the reason this song rocks
Of all the great squeeze sounds this is my favourite. Difford and Tilbrook are geniuses.
Amaaaaaazing, great memories of when your only worry was who was number 1 and on top of the pops on a Thursday night xxx
He used that WHOLE fret-board for that amazing solo
One of the great pop guitarists and never got the accolades that he deserved!
One of the greatest pop songs and great guitar solo!
Seen this live Sunday still got it flowing through my viens goosebumps excellent I'm 54 dancing through the gig at Bournemouth
Awesome song. Recently got into listening to squeeze. Fair to say I've missed out. Kudos to the drummer downing the pint in one at rhe end of the video 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
A shout out from the U.S. of A. Another great band!!!!!!!!!!
very cool..and very underrated !!!
What a sick solo.
One of the best songs humanity has ever created
