Extraordinary breakdown of a song I absolutely love. You got right down to the root of its creation which made me appreciate it more than before. Thank you !!!
I have always connected to this song in a big way and I think about this breakdown video when I listen to it now. Thank you for this insight into the music.
@@JDanielFleming Honestly, I don't care which of them does it. It's my favorite jam and lives permanently on my mp3. Thanks for your opinion, much appreciated.😍
Magnificent! As a non-musician with nominal instruction. (6 years of Cello from 6-12 years old) I now dabble in singing and songwriting, I really appreciate the breakdown of this song. It’s one of my all time favorites.
Of all the play tempted vids , this is by far the best , quite often with these videos it's difficult or even impossible to see where fingers are going , but not on this one ,very well done !
This was such an insightful breakdown of such a fantastic song- I'm amazed that you have the recordings! Great point about the lack of reverb. I think it sounds timeless without the extravagant 80s pop production that the band did eventually indulge in, in the late 80s. Nothing wrong with that though! Plus I didn't know that Elvis Costello sang the low and high parts of the track- the original music video with the mops threw me off thinking it was the other band members. Such a funny video-Paul Carrack is giving it his all while the others are messing about in the background. :D Squeeze are such a brilliant band.
This is so informative. As a studio owner myself this so very appreciated to learn the craft and the break down of everything that is going down with your educated explanation of all the elements. Thanks for producing this!
Thanks for the breakdown of this amazing song. I remember the time I tried to play along with my guitar and immediately realized it was not a “normal” progression. Haha. I’m now, many years later, finally learning it!
Just discovered your channel. Hope to see more of your wonderful song dissections in the future! This is a fantastic breakdown that gives me a new appreciation for this song and for music in general. Cheers!
Never underestimate the value of competition... If Glenn Tilbrook hadn't been champing at the bit to sing (probably) his best song this incredible Paul Carrack vocal might never have existed..
As soon as Carrack sings my spine begins to tingle & it doesn't let up until he quits... I imagine that is something of what fuelled Senor Costello in his - clearly correct - choice for lead & tho I love Tilbrook's version too.... Carrack is otherworldly it's sooo awesome..
Hello, and thank you for this terrific breakdown of one of my all-time favorite songs. "Tempted" is genius, blue-eyed soul doesn't get better than this song. I particularly appreciated hearing the early mixes Squeeze recorded; those are always so interesting to compare to the final version. Concentrating on Paul's vocal track was nothing short of sublime, and I feel new respect for how brilliant John's bass lines are on the track. It's great to.learn how Chris generated those images too (I always wondered). He knocked those lyrics right out of the ball park; the inexorable quality of infidelity has rarely been better expressed. I also apprechaeed your careful breakdown of the melody and chord progressions. "Tempted" sounds deceptively simple but as you demonstrated, there are a lot of sound ideas and influences blending into the melody. Glenn has over the years written some wonderful music to grace Chris's lyrics, and I consider the music for "Tempted" to be amongst his finest compositions. He found exactly the musical soundscape needed to enhance the brilliant lyrics. Thank you for helping me to appreciate new elements of this absolute classic. Great stuff!
Really like the way you are breaking down this song. Which I’m going to attempt to sing on smule app. I like hearing different notes or instruments you don’t always catch. My son playsTrumpet and loves playing Jazz.
At 22:15 it’s thirds below the melody line in the E melodic minor scale (ascending version): *slashes are individual notes not chord symbols* Pick ups over C# are C#/E-D#/F# then downbeat iEmin: E/G-D#/F#-E/G-F#/A-E/G-D#/F#
Just got home from work not long ago, my friday, with the intention of learning this song's keys parts tonight, you know, for fun, because it's a goddamn great song! And now I've learned them, thanks to you. Thanks a bunch!
I am lucky enough that I just spoke to Mr. Tilbrook last week. He was saying there was a version of the song produced by Dave Edmunds. Anybody know if that audio exists anywhere?
Really enjoyed watching this. Btw, on the bass line he doesn't seem to have exactly this feel on the studio version. He often leaves off the 4th note of a set of 4 to give it almost a triplet feel instead of a constant 1-2-3-4.
Paul Carrack does a good job, but I wouldn't say that the result vindicates the decision. The second verse lines that Tilbrook sings demonstrate that it would have worked just fine with him as lead throughout. Indeed, when I replay the song in my mind it's Tilbrook's voice I hear.
Much respect, but that was not a thoughtful reaction to this song: you got real hung up on the theme, and overlooked that melodic vocal against a great bass line, cool organ, amazing backing vocal bits, and tight harmonies that made this song a hit.
This song is my alarm for the morning
Excellent breakdown of one of the most underrated bands ever. Gotta love Squeeze.
Thank you so much
Extraordinary breakdown of a song I absolutely love. You got right down to the root of its creation which made me appreciate it more than before. Thank you !!!
Glenn's musical genius and Chris's lyrical genius is unheralded
Paul Carrak OWNS this song..
I've heard Glen sing the whole song without Paul in the band and that's nice too..
huge fan of Squeeze, carrack, and this song...came across your channel! subbed!
You did a great job on this!!! Your breakdown gave me an even greater appreciation of the song!!!
Just found this. Love it . Who are you. Where are you ! I want more from you
If not for GTA Vice City I would’ve never stumbled upon this gem
I have always connected to this song in a big way and I think about this breakdown video when I listen to it now. Thank you for this insight into the music.
Best breakdown of one of my favorite Paul Carrack tracks. I can't imagine anyone else doing this song.
Search the Daytona concert in the 80s with Tilbrook singing. That's my favorite.
@@wayneasiam65 Thanks, will do! Still love that track.
Tilbrook's rendition is good, just in a different way, with a different feel. Carrack's voice just has that soulful sound.
@@JDanielFleming Honestly, I don't care which of them does it. It's my favorite jam and lives permanently on my mp3. Thanks for your opinion, much appreciated.😍

dynamit evaluation of a favorite song. thank you!
Thanks so much for this. Great job of breaking it all down.
Squeeze songs are so harmonically sophisticated. I wonder if Glenn writes on piano.
Song of my youth. Saw them in Nashville. Awesome!
This is a great and magical tune! Thanks for a very enjoyable breakdown!
Of all the play tempted vids , this is by far the best , quite often with these videos it's difficult or even impossible to see where fingers are going , but not on this one ,very well done !
You did a great job on a GREAT song.
I enjoyed it!
This is great! Thanks. What happened to Paul Carrack?
That was absolutely fantastic! Great job! More please.
Awesome video, just great. this is really great stuff man

great vid on a great band! keep them coming, please. cheers! :)
Very interesting. Fabulously presented.
My favourite version of Tempted is with Glenn Tilbrook singing and playing Piano with Chris Difford on Guitar on the programe Songbook.
Yeah, I think we might be in the minority, but I agree that Glenn sings the song better than Paul.
I have always felt connected to this song. Thank you for this breakdown.
Really enjoyed this video. Tell me, how did you get your hands on the original unmixed tracks?
You can separate tracks with software these days. I play electronic music, and I use it to make my own remixes of songs from just the stereo mixes
Thanks for the breakdown of this amazing song. I remember the time I tried to play along with my guitar and immediately realized it was not a “normal” progression. Haha. I’m now, many years later, finally learning it!
Great job! My fave Squeeze album....just edging out Argybargy because it's a bit more mature of an album.
Loved Squeeze since 1979. This is a really interesting video.
A great analysis, intelligent and knowledgable - thank you. Subbed!

Great analysis. Regarding the gated reverb comment, it was only discovered around the time this album was being recorded so it hadn't taken over yet.

Amazing video! How were you able to get the isolated tracks for this song? Really cool stuff.

Thanks Doug!
Was that, "I got my toothbrush" at the beginning a mistake before the song actually starts?
I wondered that too. It sounds like he simply came in too early.
The recording starts in the same way, so I think it must have been deliberate.
Well done
Keep up the great work !
15:45 Suzanne Vega built pretty much all of Tom's Diner off of this melody fragment.

Please tell Mr Tilbrook on that my favorite version is his 80s Daytona concert.
Drum playing is so solid. Wonder if he played to a click track?
Really enjoyed watching this. Btw, on the bass line he doesn't seem to have exactly this feel on the studio version. He often leaves off the 4th note of a set of 4 to give it almost a triplet feel instead of a constant 1-2-3-4.
I think that with the extensive use of leslie, reverb was best kept minimal.
Paul Carrack does a good job, but I wouldn't say that the result vindicates the decision. The second verse lines that Tilbrook sings demonstrate that it would have worked just fine with him as lead throughout. Indeed, when I replay the song in my mind it's Tilbrook's voice I hear.
I never realised that the rhythm of this song is very "sly and the family stoneish".
Although the idea of 4 different producers with said players is appealing. I think in the end choosing Elvis for all was the right choice.
I agree Chris! The result was certainly a great one.
How were you able to post without a RUclips copyright strike? Just curious.
Do you get a sense of who wrote the chord progression?
16:12 sounds like Tom’s Diner
Vega stole it..
I'm sorry, but I just love Glen Tilbrook singing Tempted. I hum it every day.
Did Carrack come in too early and Costello left it in because it was funny?
Much respect, but that was not a thoughtful reaction to this song: you got real hung up on the theme, and overlooked that melodic vocal against a great bass line, cool organ, amazing backing vocal bits, and tight harmonies that made this song a hit.
