That "singer" is Paul Carrack. He sang this hit for Squeeze. He also sang How Long by Ace and, much later, In the Living years with Mike and the Mechanics. One of the great r&B singers of any generation.
Man I always end up opening this video, and reflecting about how wonderfull moments tha we lost everyday about our favorite songs or artist, thank so much for capture this moment!
This video is a gem. How i've not seen it before is beyond me. That camcorder was a damn good buy. Sound quality is excellent considering the age, when this video was originally uploaded and the difficulty of rendering sound from such camcorders into mp4 or whatever without it buzzing like crazy. Kudos!
I dont even think these ppl realized what they just witnessed . I watch this all of the time and paul carracks voice reaches to the deepest part of my soul. Periodt!
WOW. I must admit I did think who the fuck is this when Paul Carrack stepped up to the mike. What a superb band in all their forms. Criminally underrated.
I don't think this was a muff - in another version of Tempted ruclips.net/video/wH0icW_9tUI/видео.html Paul drops the "tempted" at exactly the same spot.
How young they were :-) This is about a month after I *first* laid eyes on them at a record store in Atlanta. Paul didn't sing at the record store - he hid in the back and came out when it was time to get autographed CD's... and I cried. ;-)
WOW, I'd not seen Glen and Chris AND Paul freakin' Carrack together since the early 80's. Was there a tour with these guys together in the early 80s? With the other guys like Lavin, Holland..? If so, I missed one of my "dying to see" bands, with full lineup, or very close....Thank you very, very much for posting, and Great Performance!
Greg Hubbard -Paul rejoined the band briefly in ‘93 and was on the Some Fantastic Place tour with them. I saw them in Chicago on the tours - “Babylon and on” twice, “Frank”, “SFP” & “Play”. I loved Paul’s solo stuff from the 80s also.
@ Cheryl Barry, 4 yrs. Later... if no one has ever told you what a flannel for your face is... I remember asking the same thing a couple of years back. So, what it means is... appearently in many European countries the motels, and hotels don't always have wash clothes in the bathrooms due to people stealing them all the time. I read somewhere that many of the hotels still have bidets next to the toilets to wash of you fanny after your done pooping. So the small towels in the bathroom are used to dry any remaining water off your rear end. Not anything you wanna use to wash your face. In the UK and other European countries they refer to a flannel for your face as something you take along with you to wash your face with while traveling around in European countries. Things may of changed tho in the last 3 decades or so when this song was written. I mean, hotel standards and whether they provide wash clothes. I lived in Germany from 1969 -1972 and did a fair amount of travelling around Europe. I remember back then you could never drink water from the taps in most places like France, Italy, and Spain, and many other countries. I was just a kid then but remember you could not drink anything that didn't come out of a bottle. Back then 50 years ago, they hadn't thought of bottling water except Perrier mineral water that used to come in a glass bottle, and was available everywhere, it sort of tasted like club soda water. But that was all you could really drink, soft drinks like Coca-Cola Perrier or wine. And almost all European countries served table wine even to children when you're dining out. And almost all European sort of like bed and breakfast places or penziones, always served a continental breakfast, usually croissants with marmalade, and Danish Pastry, and tea or coffee. You could only drink the water if it was boiled. I imagine in the modern world of today many of the European countries have upgraded their infrastructure but in 1970, it was only 26 years since the end of WWII. So, many Eu countries were still digging their way out, recovering from the war that plagued most of Europe in the first half of the 1900's two world wars and between Hitler and Stalling, Europe was in tatters for decades... France practiced dumping chamber pots out the windows, onto the cobblestone streets for well into the 50's, afterwards rebuilding and repopulating. So many men were killed, there was a shortage on skilled craftsmen. Anyway... that's what the meaning of a flannel for your face is. It used to be, when travling in Europe or the Uk, you always wanted to bring plenty of flannels wash clothes. And another thing about Uk, and Eu. Is that you do much more traveling on trains. The trains have private rooms you can relax and even lay down and sleep on long trips. So if you happen to be on a long train trip, there again, you wanna have a washcloth to wash up with in the trains bathrooms on long rides that last for days. Hope you see this even tho its been 4 yrs. since you posted your comment....
+Marie Lamb , if it's any help...a bunch of us in the US loved their stuff. Hey, I still have a vinyl copy of "East Side Story"..and a 7" copy of Ace's "How Long". ;)
Contrary to other comments...at 2:07 , Carrack doesn't "flub the line"...he's interpreting and control freak Glenn is "freaking out"...that's why they couldn't keep a great keyboard player when they got one....Don't get me wrong...I love Squeeze but could you imagine if this lineup produced another couple of albums !!! I think Glenn gave Paul no room to breathe and that is evident at 2:07....
@Ystadcop Undiscovered? You clearly have no idea who this guy is.. But i wouldve had said the same thing if i didnt know him.. he looks like a truckdriver in this video haha.. actually the whole band look like truck drivers.
Great set. It was an icy afternoon that day and they played a really small venue here in Deep Ellum. They signed CDs here "Some Fantastic Place". I remember since it was Carrack's first time back in the band for over a decade, they did a cool version of Ace's "How Long" that night.
Really? According to Wikipedia, it didn't make the top 40 in any country. I think it's become a very well known song however, due its use in TV commercials and video games, etc.
For sure. Some songs just get a lot bigger over time. Would be hard for people to accept that Who's Crying Now was a significantly bigger hit for Journey than Don't Stop Believin'.
In fairness, this isn't bad at all. In fact it's an undiscovered gem, Perhaps the singer should dump the cap and sad beard but bloody hell, what a voice!
Man this is a friggin’ rockin’ version of this tune! I like it better with just the guitar and bass. Fantastic song written by the guitarist and bass player….go figure.
That "singer" is Paul Carrack. He sang this hit for Squeeze. He also sang How Long by Ace and, much later, In the Living years with Mike and the Mechanics. One of the great r&B singers of any generation.
Why did you put singer in quotation marks?
@@James-if3kc - I wondered the same.... who didn't know it was Paul Carrack?
@@DavidR_192 Exactly.
I had no idea who it was until he opened his mouth, never seen him with that look before! But that voice is one of a kind!
Man I always end up opening this video, and reflecting about how wonderfull moments tha we lost everyday about our favorite songs or artist, thank so much for capture this moment!
can't get over how recent this looks yet it's 27 yrs old....I was 19 when this was shot...so damn long ago
A GREAT song doing what it does best- standing on it's own merit without all the bells and whistles-- Squeeze delivered the goods
This video is a gem. How i've not seen it before is beyond me.

Paul's soulful voice rings like and opera singers. One of my influences.
Imagine having a voice like that.

What a fun performance! These guys really seemed to be having a good time.
So amazing!!!!
WOW. I must admit I did think who the fuck is this when Paul Carrack stepped up to the mike. What a superb band in all their forms. Criminally underrated.
13 years later....same!
Look how young they look, magic years
God damn that was awesome, the fact that it's acoustic, and a pretty odd venue make it even better
This was in Dallas during the SFP tour. They did an in store appearance a few hours before their show.
Great song, great singer, great band
My favorite song of 1981 ! This is so good!!
That Carrack boy can sure sell a tune. And what a tune!
Paul Carrack is amazing. He sounds great no matter what the acoustics are.
I saw this the first time it came out. This is BRILLIANT.
Love this voice! And still sounds strong. Always been one of my favorite songs.
This was 28 years ago.
Simply one of the bestlive bands anyone is ever likely to see
Love the look that Glen gives Carrack at 2:07 when he muffs the line.
Not to mention the look of true love at 3:06 xD

Paul Carrack plays piano at Clapton's Crossroads ... KILLS the last song for the mega all guitarists jam..."High Time We Went"

best live performance IMHO
This video is full of awesome. Way to rock out an in-store! We were all so much you get then...and what a fun age marker for your baby! :)

He's wearing a Rockies hat-I love it!
you're kidding right? this song was massive in the states
Real. Live. Music!
I love the original MTV video, like Ronnie James Dio said the magic that we feel it's worth a lifetime.
Great band
The awesome Keith Wilkinson is there too. It doesn't get any better than this.
Glenn is my all time favourite male vocal. But Paul Carrack has it here!
Not a smartphone insight

Keely Anne Agreed
Paul was a lucky man being asked to sing lead on this!
3 things....sounds awesome for being in a record store, I love the look Glen flashes Paul at 2:07, and what is a "flannel for my face"??
Just a washcloth, but they're British, so....lol

Anyone involved with Squeeze is music royalty in the UK. The worlds scrambling for a slot on Jools nevermind Tillbrook, Difford and Carrack
Difford's lyrics weren't universal enough, imo. They made Squeeze a niche act.

Nah when paul went down a different road melody wise at 2.20 glen said yeah 2.21/.2.22 with approval....I think you read it wrong.
Paul did fine without them
I doubt it; Glenn seems like a pretty chill guy.
Back again to watch this, appalling video quality but great performance! AND THAT BABY IN THE PRAM AT THE END IS NOW THIRTY YEARS OLD!

Early 90s gritty look

Cameron Ely Sound Warehouse in Dallas 1993. I was there.
