    Hello Matt. I have solved my problem with the extra frameline by using a leica 5cm ltm to m converter. It makes a big difference being able to use the viewfinder as intended. Incidentally, using the m version of the voigtlander 21/4 and 35/2.5 also does not bring up the other frames. Something else: the peak design anchor mounts are perfect for attaching a wrist strap to Barnack without strap eyelets... Keep up the good works. Jean-Guy.

    Bought one about two months ago. It’s the VM version that sits on the CLE most days. It’s a bit sharper than my 35mm Summicron (v3), but not by much (I’m film only). The contrast is higher, as is the flare resistance. It’s my new fav lens..

    Such a cool lens! They have made a 50/2 Heliar Classic that was collapsible, and very compact. It wasn’t ‘Summicron’ sharp but more than sharp enough for real world work and had a beautiful character. I had one, sold it and regret it! Lol. They’re not cheap and not easy to find… so yeah I’m with you…bring back the 50/2 Heliar Classic! 😎

    Matt, any lens you use produces amazing photos, kudos! Anyhow, I know what you say about 50mm f2. I have an old Leica Summicron v. 4 Canadian made, and it’s amazing. I have a 1970s Jupiter 3 f1.5, which I truly think it’s effective only from 2.8, unless I’m going for a dreamy wash-out look. Both lenses gives me much joy, and I agree with a modern screw mount version’s versatility in old camera is needed.

    Thank you for the in-depth review. Do you think this one and the Heliar 40mm f2.8 without the focus helicoid have big difference in image quality? I'm deciding which one to get for my L mount camera, with M to L close focus adapter. I'm leaning on the later one, since I need to have my adapter on for both lenses, the one without the focus helicoid seems more compact. Unless it's image quality is significant worse than the new one.

    I've found this lens to be a great one, a really superb all-arounder, whether on the Barnack or adapted onto my Sonys. My 2 mild grumbles are that the lens cap that comes with it only fits with the hood (so if you remove the hood you're without a cap), and that while I know you want them to do a good 50mm f/2, I'm wanting them to put out a new 35mm (my own personal favorite focal length). I've not had too many composition issues using the built-in viewfinder on the Barnack, but if I want to be sure I'll use the Viooh, since you can set it midway between the 35 and 50mm clicks.

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom

  • @dagmarbaechli
    @dagmarbaechli Год назад +1

    I am really happy Voigtländer makes this new LTM lens, I appreciate that kind of commitment! Yet, I am a bit confused about the 40mm range. I can only imagine they've had parts left of the probably not so successful collapsible Heliar 40/2.8 M bayonet, which can only be used with a Helicoid adapter (to Sony E). It is also such an odd range, it is actually hard to find a matching high-quality viewfinder at a decent price. They probably should have packed a 40mm vf to that lens, at least for the LTM version.
    Personally, I'd wish for a 28mm or 35mm, maybe pancake style. I would not mind if a 50mm would follow later, even a new Heliar 50/3.5 would be great, but I think I really lack a decent (moderate) wide angle for my Leica screw-mount cameras. I've already got some 50mm lenses, among those a really beautiful performer, a 5cm/3.5 Elmar red scale from 1956.
    Voigtländer generally do confuse me quite a bit. As I said, I really appreciate their efforts, but all those various lens finishes and changes in style drive me half crazy. And I don't quite see a concept in their line-up (maybe it's just too much for me, creating "want" over "need" -lol-), or some of their recent social media presence, for that matter. Vintage vs classic, multi coated vs single coated - and also the rate they are shelling out second, third or even fourth versions of existing formulas is quite a bit confusing. But hell, yeah, let them fire away - preferably with some Leica screw-mount lenses, which would be awesome, as I keep being tempted by the 40/2.8, having a constant fight with my "add to shopping cart" finger, despite the odd focal length and despite already owning the great little 40/2 Summicron-C.
    The one thing that keeps stopping me, really, is the fundamental question: black or silver? ,-)

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
      @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom  Год назад

      Thanks David! I bought this lens after making the video. The size and fact it's LTM was too good not to have. I bought silver but kinda wish I had black too for the Black 1931 Leica I :) .. 40mm was the go to FL for many fixed lens RF cameras as it's close to the view we see with out eyes. In real terms, if you use a iiig or M3 use the full finder area to compose and it's spot on. For other cameras I agree it would be nice to have 28/35/50 to match the framelines.

    • @dagmarbaechli
      @dagmarbaechli Год назад

      @@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I'd probably end up with one black, one silver, too -lol- I've got a silver 28/5.6 TTArtisan and I'm still eyeing the black one, which will even show brassing after a while.. And I am really trying not to buy the 40/2.8 just now, and I hope Voigtländer will announce more options.. But, hey, those lens makers really know how to create the "want"! Cheers, Dagmar ,-)

    This would be my next lens, after the 40/1.4 Nokton MC for sure. It's perfect for the Bessa R3a, or any CL/CLE, due to 40mm, hence corresponding 40mm frame lines. Any other Body other then above doesn't have 40mm frame lines, into the M mount universe. (Rollei 35 RF is a subtle different R3A Bessa Voigtländer)

This would mean the Voigtlander will "win" for contrast and probably a more modern rendering, perhaps more saturated look but i'm guessing as haven't used the Cron.

    One way in which I think Cosina went too far on the "vintage" angle was by reviving the silly revolving f/stop scale. The entire front of the lens rotates as you turn the focusing ring (as shown at 2:13) which forces you to hunt for the index dot whenever you want to change apertures. This was typical of RF lenses through the '50s, but by the '60s most manufacturers had switched to "parallel" focusing mounts that let the f/stops stay put.

      Hi Jean-Guy.. interesting.. I think because I know to just view the full VF area I take no notice of what framelines show. In theory 50-75 should work but i've not tried.

    Will this lens work on old Soviet LTM cameras since their thread pitch is different than German or Japanese LTM cameras? I have a few Russian LTM lenses I'd Iove to use on my M, but since the thread pitch is different, they don't align with the Rangefinder on my M and can't focus properly without using a Visoflex.

      When I mix and match they normally work just not wide open as will miss focus (say J3 50/1.5 etc).

    Agree, new 35mm film camera (from any manufacturer) is desperately needed...

    It sounds like a very good Lens. I think that a 40mm focal length are great (though I like 35mm more !) and 40mm are more "normal" than a 50mm Lens ! I do not like 50mm Lenses, any Lens shorter or longer, 45mm and shorter, 55mm and longer ! My wish to Voigtländer are a 24mm 2.0 (or 2.8) APO and a 135mm 2.8 APO for Sony E-mount. 14/15mm 2.8 or 4.0 APO will also be nice.

    A 50mm f2 wouldn‘t be so small so a similar sized 50mm f2.8 would be more realistic and still great!

    All my Leicas are black. Therefore I would go for the black one.

    I would have bought one of these if the lens surround ring was silver instead of black. It doesn't look right on the silver version. It stands out too much and clashes with the overall look.

    It seems to me that your thoughts are going in five different directions at the same time. So distracting . At the end I couldn’t think of one useful thing, I learned in this video. I like your channel, just trying to help.

      Thanks Julius, it's a good lens for those liking a small walkabout lens, a more modern rendering vs vintage lenses and more of the frame in focus at wider apertures compared to the 50/60s lenses. Sorry I didn't make it clear and thanks for the feedback.
