The 100g type 2 sounds perfect for use on the CL as a light weight setup. The Ultron is more than double the weight and can make the CL quite heavy. I have the 21mm 3.5 and it's heavy to carry.
One essential lens is missing from your comparison: the Cosina Zeiss 28mm f/2.8 Biogon in M mount. That lens is probably the only lens on par with the Elmarit and is actually quite affordable at that as well, especially given they are "only" ~USD300 more expensive than this new Voigtlaender.
Now, this is likely to be one of those rare moments when I am glad I am not a Leica shooter. I have the version of the 28/2.8 Color Skopar with Nikon FE mount. I am not sure if that has a different optical design, but can confirm it is pin sharp from f2.8 and even at f16 diffraction is hard to notice. Also it has a 15cm MFD which enables convenient close up shots given the significant DoF of the 28mm lens and the IQ at around the MFD is stunningly high.
Hello, I noticed on some of my pictures the purple cast on the edge of the frame that you mentioned. What is the reason for that? I was wondering if it was my sensor. Thank you great video as usual.
what 28mm viewfinder do you use on your barnack? have you used the 28/35mm voigtlander finder and is it useable compared to the larger, circular single focal length finders?
I don’t shoot 28 anymore, but seeing the Skopar I would just keep/buy the Ultron II. And you get f2. Super small, brass, clicky aperture and buttery smooth focus… But the Skopar is great news for LTM guys.
Hi Matt, between this lens and the Ultron 28mm mkII, which do you recommend since the price difference is not that huge? - which also confusing on how Voigtlander position this lens
Thanks for nice review! I just got this new 28mm Type II lens last week, very happy with it for my M10 and M246. The performance is on a par with the Elmarit to some extent in my opinion.
Thanks for the informative review. I've wanted a 28mm for quite a while for my film M camera and this helps with the decision. Now, though, I'm contemplating the purchase of a second 28mm, as I received the 7Artisans 5.6 in the mail days before the Voigtlander lenses were released. I like the 7Artisans lens so far, but taking the lens hood on and off takes some effort.
Nice pics 👍 I like how they thought about rangefinder and mirrorless users, but don't get why they didn't give the LTM version 1m close focus distance as this is standard on the barnacks, and would allow for easy coupling with an adapter to M3 as well 😜
Why would you want to limit yourself to 1m? I would love to have the possibility to get a shot even at 0.5m with the LTM version. I use zone focus a lot documenting my surroundings and the close focus limitations, especially using a wide angle lens, is just frustrating. I should also note that I use everything from a very old Leica 1 converted to a Standard to a M2/M3. Nothing wrong with doing a lock or even better; a slightly different feeling in the focus ring when exceeding the rangefinder focus (just like Leica done with their newer 35/50 versions) Cheers!
A number of screw mount cameras such Canon P and 7 actually RF couple down to 0.7m. And it is a fairly easy mod to enable this on Barnacks such as IIIf or IIIg. I think CV did the right thing with this lens. It is a needless pain to be limited to 1m on any lens.
Will do though I'm way behind. Just got colour film back from Vegas (the finished rolls anyway) and have 20 rolls of B&W in the fridge still to develop :S. I've ordered the black L lens for my Barnack so plenty of photos to come in the future
wow ... what a test ! .... thanks for sharing ... The more I use it the more I like the 28mm format ... So I'll look closer to this 28 Skoppar version L in Black 🙂

Hi Bill, i'm not sure if I understand your question. All M cameras focus to 0.7m with RF coupling and any with LiveView can focus at any distance (lens dependent).
Can you test these LTM versions on the Canon series LTM cameras, maybe specifically the Canon P. Just curious if they'd work well on old Canons. Can't find anyone using the TT artisan or these on Canon cameras.
Hi Kevin, the lenses will work the same on Canon RF cameras so no worries there. Our minds think alike, I tested my Canon 28mm f2.8 LTM vs others this morning. I've updated the blog post on MrLeica.com to cover the results for the Canon, Zeiss and others in test 2.
Will the screw mount Type 1 of this lens work on the soviet cameras like the Zorki-4 or FED-2. ? I know some screw mounts will work on old Soviet ones, but I can't remember if the problems lie with wider or longer lenses? Something about the thread pitch? Thanks again for a great video...and once again...I wanna go buy glass!!! :O CC
What happens when you use a 0.5 MFD on a Leica M. Will you still be able to focus down to 0.7m? Will the camera indicate if you try to focus too close? Can you accidentally end up with out of focus images? If not then the small MFD is preferable even on Leica M film.
@@DC-sp5ds Modern rangefinder lenses are made with the possibility of use with mirrorless or live view cameras, so focusing down to 0.5 is still useful. It's just shooting on traditional rangefinders necessitates a bit of mindfulness when focusing up close. I have a few lenses that focus to 0.5m and I deal with that by focusing to the end of the rangefinder patch's movement, then adjusting distance to get the framing right.
Thanks for the comparisons. I’ve been waiting to make a decision on a 28 for a while. I just ordered an Elmarit. Your not the only one who gave a slight nod in that direction. I’m spending way too much on gear though. That 28mm should be my last purchase, I hope..

Nice comparison video, but it sounds like a demon is trying to possess you Matt. :)
Great review, as always. But pleeeeeeease fix the audio issues, these lower frequency glitches are really unnerving.
Matt needs an exorcist, those aren't audio glitches. A demon is trying to possess him. ;)
Something like a high-pass filter would do the trick.
Thank you, yes so sorry, I used de-noise software and it changed the track
Fair point haha
Frantically trying to teach myself audio as I know zero about it (First 330 videos were as recorded. Recently I've trying a few de-noise programs
So excited for this review, and so unnerved by the audio. Let's do this.

Yes the Nikon F one is great. I love mine.
I was looking into the type 2 version, but decided to just stay with my 28/2 Ultron II.. Passes a throat lozenge. Thanks Matt...
The Ultron is great. Sorry for audio!

I use Voigtlander both types and KEKS. See blog link below video for visual. 28/35 is $$$
Thanks for the review! What about distorsion? Were you able to test it compared to the elmarit?
Thanks! I did a part 2 video, see that, It had more test photos and you can look for possible distortion. It looked pretty good to me.
Great review! You think I can use this lens in a M4-2 without 28mm framelines? Just composing with the whole viewfinder? Thank you!
I think yes. M cameras with 35mm tramlines like the M2 can be used for 28mm doing this, using the entire VF. I do.
I don’t shoot 28 anymore, but seeing the Skopar I would just keep/buy the Ultron II. And you get f2. Super small, brass, clicky aperture and buttery smooth focus… But the Skopar is great news for LTM guys.

Hi Matt, thanks for sharing this excellent video! What do you think of comparing "Brightin Star 28mm F2.8" with this voigtlander 28mm F2.8?
I might get the BS 28 in the future for fun. Voigtlander is a proper lens, BS Is a fun lens (smeared corner etc)
Hi Matt, between this lens and the Ultron 28mm mkII, which do you recommend since the price difference is not that huge? - which also confusing on how Voigtlander position this lens
Ultron v2 for performance unless you need extra speed

Ultron II wins for optical performance from my tests but is 2x bigger

Of course! It will fit all screw mount bodies.

I think it will as wider lenses are less affected by the slightly different flange distance
Does the Skopar truly upstage the Ultron..?
No, see the part 2 video. Ultron is still the winner but the Skopar is very good.
