Yes, I know that I accidently used Canon's crop factor of 1.6x when Fuji's is actually 1.5x, but the message was that some people may need to consider crop factors. My bad on the math.
Actually Fuji’s crop factor is 1.6.

My go to lens for portraits is the 100mm F/2.8 macro lens! It’s highly underrated as a portrait lens I shoot more closeup portraits than full body so for me it’s pure perfection
Admittedly, 3 years ago I would have argued with you about this. But I finally decided to give the 50 a real try during Covid lockdowns, and I love it for all the reasons you state here. I still lean on my 85 for single portraits but I love having a 50 and it’s on my camera more than I expected.
I had watched that video when it came out, but somehow it ended up back on my list to be viewed. And then I watched and listened more carefully. I just had to try the field of view thing with my eyes and while I do see much wider than the lens, my "center field" was exactly what my camera was seeing. I never noticed that in years of using the 50. Crazy! Thanks for amazing videos. I try to never miss one.

I started shooting in the late 70s with the Olympus OM10 and the supplied 50mm lens. With digital I still shoot Olympus & also the Fuji X100V. I have excellent Olympus Zuiko 25mm PRO on my OM1 and I have my X100V set to the 50mm equivalent. For me the 50mm equivalent just seems the most natural fit for my photography. It's like breathing, I don't even think about it, it just 'is'!
No question the 85 mm kicks butt on a full frame camera!
Love my 50mm! I actually have 3 of them: a new Nikon 1.8, an old 1.8 which is slow and loud but gives my great flares and an manual 1.8 when I want to slow myself down
Love your stuff. I don't shoot portraits (or even people) but still dig your videos, going back to the one you did for Fuji with the guys from The Camera Store. Straight and to the point, with good advice that's applicable.
I preach getting a 50mm for any beginner. The camera that sits on my shelf for capturing my family always has a 50mm lens on it. I grab and go and it’ll perform every time, anywhere. Thanks Nate 😌✌🏾

I’m glad you emphasized 50mm equivalent. When I started in photography years ago, I bought a 50mm on an APS-C body (Canon T2i) before learning about crop factor which made it 80mm equivalent.
Btw, your 50mm lens on Fuji would be 75mm equivalent. Canon’s APS-C is the 1.6x crop factor. Most other major brands (like Fuji, Sony, Nikon, etc) it’s 1.5x crop factor.
Love my 50 mm Lens. Of all the lens choices that are out there, the 50 is the one I use most often.
I don't shoot many portraits and therefore my favorite lens was always the Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 on Nikon APSC (D500), followed by 105mm macro lens and the 150-600mm tele lens as I also shoot macro and wildlife.
I migrated from FF to M43 a couple of years ago. I have both a 20mm and 25mm set of lenses (40 and 50mm equiv.). I thought the 40 would be redundant, but sometimes that little bit of width can be a blessing in a compressed environment. They are both very workable lenses. I still do have one FF camera and just one lens for it, it’s a Canon 5D classic with the 40mm f2.8, a very nice combo. A lot of people suggest that the 50 mm lens is boring, perhaps they should analyze they’re work. I have quite a range of focal lengths in my kit. I use them all. Sometimes for a specific reason, and sometimes when it suits my desire to explore a specific lens. I don’t believe I’d ever suggest the 40 or 50 mill focal length is boring. If the image is boring it’s the fault of the photographer, not the lens.
I agreed with everything you said. plus... it's fun to blow away people with gorgeous shots of mods with the 50mm 1.8. So you have to slow down a touch, but why not when you're working with gorgeous people! thanks for the reminder and yes i'll be dusting off my Nifty asap! keep up the great work mate!

My favorite lens is my 50mm! I think it’s the best ‘all around’ lens but it’s neither here nor there. It neither emphasizes the environment nor the subject so it can either create tension between the two or neutralize them. There’s no contrast to help drive a message.
A 35mm can help sell the story of ‘here I am’ whereas an 85mm will help sell the story of ‘who I am’. A 50mm will be easier to compose with but harder to tell a story with.
The neutrality of it might be what appeals to me....

Actually by not emphasizing the environment, not creating tension, by not neutralizing them, by not creating contrast, etc. - is what in many cases helps in composing an excellent shot and message/story.

I like the 50mm as well, but, sorry, I don't agree that it can be the one and only lens for every photographer. It is a bit too narrow, too "zoomed" in. I would choose 35mm instead, as it is more versatile. For example, 35mm is much easier to use indoors to shoot group photos of your family.
There is a reason why fixed lens cameras have 28 or 35 (Leica Q, Fuji x100, Sony RX1). Same goes for phone cameras, that are even wider - 24 to 35 as main shooters usually. Those focal lengths are more versatile and easier for begginers, for every photographer.
Now, if we would discuss, what one lens should portrait photographers have, then I would agree, that 50mm is pefect.
I think it is quite subjective, I've spent several months shooting with a 50mm equivalent lens only, I'd qualify it as a very slightly scooped normal field of view. I really appreciate that "what you see is what you get" feeling it provides, the minimal distortion and it's ability to strip the subject to its essence. It can sometimes feel too narrow with certain scenes (catching more of it without ruining the desired perspective, or because there isn't enough space to step back), leaving not option for alternative framing which can get inconvenient...but the 35mm equivalent I got a few days ago isn't nearly as versatile for sure, the additional distance from the subject it induces is quite disturbing and it's certainly not more natural either (the distortion of the sides can get extremely noticeable). For me the right compromise could be in between those two...
Having bought my own copy of Sigma 50mm F1.4 Art I have never had any regrets. This lens fits my shooting style perfectly and gives me enormous image quality. More than I can use. In a studio setting with proper studio lights set up it's a beast. I am planning however to buy me a 28mm lens to try something new, but it took me over 15 years to realize I really want/need to.
Ya my copy is so insanely sharp that I'd rather put it on my mirrorless with a FZT adapter (still works flawlessly) than by a new smaller version.
@@NathanElson, I like it when I can feel the weight of my gear in my hand. That is also why I have not switched from FF DSLR and I never use any straps. Even with a grip and 70-200 on it I would still avoid straps.

Nikon N80 film camera. It's the best for that camera shooting B&W film. I'm more comfortable though with a 35mm which I learned on in the early '70's but I don't have one ... yet. Cheers!

After many years of photography, 20 years professionally, my go to and only lens is my 50mm Summicron F2. Coupled with my Leica M6, it’s all I need. Great video. Thanks, Rick….. 🌴

I recently moved from aps-c to full frame and the only 2 lenses I had that were full frame was my 50mm knockofftilux and a big zoom, and I gotta tell ya I'm struggling to want any more lenses at all, maybe a 16 or 24 down the road for landscapes and stuff but yeah, for the most part the 50mm just puts in way too much work, it's great.
The 50mm lens is undoubtedly the go-to focal length for capturing a wide range of subjects. Interestingly, I went without one for an entire year during my wedding photography career. My kit included the 24mm, 35mm, 85mm, and 70-200mm lenses. With two Canon bodies - the 1D3 as my backup (with a x1.3 crop) and the 5D3 as my primary camera (full-frame), I always had the flexibility of multiple focal lengths, essentially offering the capabilities of six "lenses" instead of just three.
As my Canon gear (camera bodies) starts to show its age, I've been considering turning my Fuji XE2 into a kind of survival kit by adding the 35mm f/1.4 lens. This lens, in my opinion, is one that Fuji might regret releasing because its optical performance is so outstanding that it outshines many of Fuji's other lenses. It's become an essential part of my kit!
Well everyone has a preferable choice of lenses depending on their work, what you shoot and etc, I use Carl Zeiss Planar 50mm f1.4 ZE, and I'm in love with that lens, of course sometimes I switch to 85mm depending on concept and indoor/outdoor conditions.

Anytime I shoot for publication I have the client send me a png of the layout such as the cover of the magazine with the header, crop, etc, and then I shoot tethered into Capture One with that png loaded and I can see what the final image will look like based on the layout. If it's a single or dual page spread I will get them to send me that as well.

I sold all my lenses in the range from 17 to 200 mm full frame, including the camera (Sony A7RM3), to buy a Leica M with … you guess it: 50 mm Summicron f2. BTW: my fandom to 50 mm starts 30 years ago with a Mamiya 645 Super with a 80 mm/f2.8. Sekor C. For this camera, lenses are so expensive, i had to deal with the 80 mm, which is the 6x4.5 equivalent to 50mm on full frame.
Canon crop is 1.6x. Every other APSC 1.5x :)
Well by golly I think you might be correct. It's been so long since I've thought about a crop factor I forgot it wasn't across the board universal. Ah well, the fact that there can be a crop factor was the main message I wanted to get across :)
@@NathanElson yeah it's always been a bit of an odd factor of Canon making their own sensors. And I assume 1.5x sensors just became the norm for everyone else. The 1.6x is such a headache to try to work out in your head. 1in sensor crop is maybe the hardest though hahaha

by the way... first full frame camera I owned (and still do) was/is the Canon 5d with the 50mm 1.8 on it. Before that, I used a Rebel T1 with the Nifty Fifty. Covered a whole season of Fashion Week (New York, London, Milan, Paris) with that and had a blast!
I have the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG DN Art, the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG DN Art, and the Sony 35mm FE 35mm f/1.8. Of the three, the Sony, by far is my favorite walk around lens. It's also handy indoors, where 50mm can be a bit tight, especially if more than one person is going to be in the shot.
50mm is a little better than 35mm for non-environmental portraits, but I prefer 35mm for just about everything else. If I need to go longer than 35mm, I usually skip 50mm and jump straight to 85mm. And for non-environmental portraits, I prefer 85mm.
35mm has been a go-to focal length for photojournalists and street photographers, ever since the development of the 35mm camera, because it's wide enough to put the subject in context, without losing it in the clutter.
If I were ever to go back to using 50mm, it would have to be something like the Sigma 50mm f/2 DC DN. Or Maybe the Voigtlander 50mm f/2 APO-Lanthnar. The f/1.4s are just a pain in the arse to carry around. On those rare occasions when I need a 50mm-ish lens, I'll mount the 35mm Sony on an APS-C.
i'll be using my sigma 85 art for portraits for as long as i still have this d850. most beautiful f-mount lense ever imo
I owned that lens until I switched to mirrorless, it was a total beauty though!
My favorite Fujifilm lens is the 56 1.2 it's a 85 in fullframe term.
Owned it, loved it, but didn’t use my Fuji often enough to justify keeping it. Seeing it sit on a shelf seemed so wrong so I ended up selling all of my lenses except the 35mm.

Depends on what you shoot. If it's models in a big enough studio then you're probably fine with a 50mm, but out and about I find it's mostly in no man's land. Most of the time I find it is either not wide enough or not long enough (mostly very frustratingly not wide enough). It's a very occasional use focal length for me that is best accessed with a zoom lens for those rare shots that call for it. For an only prime I'd rather go with a 35mm: a good versatile walkaround F/L, just wide enough to but not too wide. I can always crop in a bit if I need to but I cannot crop out. My most used F/L range is 28-42mm, and a 35mm would cover most of that with minimal cropping. Main reason for owning a 50mm for me is for extreme low light on a budget, because you can get a fast lens like a 50mm f/1.4 with great optics for relatively little money with lots of them available on the used market.
Oh I love that tube light setup. Can you tell me what brand and model are those? Also what adapter you use to hold them up in those angles?

IMO 50mm is the lens for anyone who’s serious about photography. Zoom lenses can be really nice and convenient, though not a good learning tool.
I remember the days when a 50 mm was sold as a kit lens. Back then zooms we’re evil.
Yeah I have a 50 basically bolted to the body 90% of the time. Certain sense of freedom in a small light kit. I was using Fuji with the 35mm f1.4 dream machine, then the Canon 6D with the nifty fifty and now an A7III with the Sony 50mm f1.8 that everyone loves to hate. I'm sort of generalist photographer though so may not work for everyone.
In terms of versatile people photography (indoor and outdoor) I love my Sigma 65mm F2. Great build and image quality for a good price and I think it's a nice sweet spot in terms of focal length and max. aperture.
I had never used a 50 before purchasing the Nikon Z50 1.2. It’s usually on one of my two camera bodies now.
Every photographer does not need a normal lens. However, I think every photographer should try a normal lens for general subjects.
For full-frame cameras, I have tried 40, 45, 50, and 55mm normal focal length lenses. The 40mm f/1.7 on the Canonet G-III QL17 rangefinder was my personal favorite. The 50mm f/1.4 on Nikon, Fuji, and Pentax 35mm SLR cameras was my second choice. However, instead of a normal lens, my personal favorite main lens for general subjects was a slightly wide 35mm f/1.4
Bought my first 35mm in1971. A Konica Autoreflex T and it came with a 52mm lens and 99% of what I shot was with that lens. Still use that camera now and then.
My favourite lens is Canon EF135mm F2.0. Iused it for the most of my shoots. Used to like nifty-fifty. If I'll buy another 50mm lense it shoud be at least F1.4
I almost never use 50mm, actually. But I have the new Nikon 135mm 1.8 Plena lens and it's got me pretty dazzled.
I'm definitely a 35mm guy. I almost never use my 50mm anymore because I have my 35 and 70-200L. Canon Eos R
I own a Canon 85 mm 1.8 lens with a Canon 5 d mark iii. I love this lens. But I agree with you. If I could add one more lens it would be the one you describe in the video.
I love the 85mm focal length, and a lot of my work is shot with one, but for a 'do everything well' lens, it's a little too long.
Loving my 20mm on my FF cameras. But cropped 16-9 :) But normal everyday 35mm is king.
Sigma Art 40mm f1.4, is one of the best Lenses for Image Quality & price around, for full frame. 28mm & 50mm are useful but a 24-105mm is versatile, if your careful with geometric distortion.

I "think" I would agree with you that if I had one lens. That being said, I feel 50mm is boring as hell. I often find it too short or tight for my style of shooting. I prefer either a 35 or 85 (lean to 35 is my everyday one lens).
Yeah but that's kind of what's about this lens. It's not spectacular in any way (minus f/1.2 for overusing boke) but it kinda makes you build up photos interesting with the composition (which by the way is what makes interesting photographs). Same is with the zoom lens, i absolutely love 24-105 which has even more boring look than most of the 50's but somehow my favourite photos i've took are with either 24-105 or fifty. And speaking about the 50's, you would be suprised how big of a difference is between these lenses, i've shot with few of them and each gives you different look and approach to taking stills. My fav's are Canon's 50/1.8, helios 58/2 and 50/1.2L, i've never loved the C50/1.4, Fuji 35/1.4 or Sony 50/1.8
Perfect lens would be Sony 10-600mm f1.4 G II - they just didn't made it yet :) My favourite one is Sony FE 24-70 mm F2.8 GM II, unfortunately I only borrowed it and had to give it back. I miss it so much...
When I got into photography in the film days, like 50 years ago, I always shyed away from the 50mm. Too much distortion if you got to close. But in recent years since getting my Nikon Z system I found the 50mm Z f1.8s to be a game changer. I think part of the reason is the quality of the sensors allows me keep my distance and I can crop tighter if needed. With that said when I am out doing location work of models I end up using my Nikon Z50 with the 40mmZ lens. I have actually started taking just that combo more oft than not. Canon 50 mm f/1,4 is the cheapest lens I own, the physically smallest and lightest lens, it is also the only lens I always have with me and it is the one i take most images with and the one I enjoy the most. Is my 70-200 better? Definitely (some times) but it weighs a ton, it is clumsy and a bit scary for some people. Image quality is great, but on every other parameter than image quality it sucks. So 50 is my default lens. Only if I cant't do what I want with ha 50 I will swab lens, but have the 50 with me anyway. So my only 1 lens would be a 50 as well, but it is not the best lens on the market.
On 35mm Nikon 35mm, on my Hasselblad 60mm f3,5

Nikon, Fujifilm, Sony and Pentax APS-C sensors have a 1.5x crop factor, while Canon APS-C sensors have a 1.6x crop factor. Actually, your 35mm on a Fuji is 35 x 1.5 = 52.5mm. So it’s a lot closer to 50 than you initially thought.

It is listed my X-Pro 2 crop factor is 1.5 x, 1.53x to be exact so we are looking at a 52.5, or 53.5mm FF equiv. on the XF35mm, not 56mm.

The Canon RF 28-70mm f/2L has this focal length covered and gives you room to play. I'd have a hard time getting a 50mm before the 28-80 if I could literally only buy one. I don't disagree that 50mm lenses are fantastic, but it's just not the one to get if you could only have one.

i think if you use a 35mm on an apsc you might have a similar "zoom" BUT you actually get the distortion of the 35mm lens. right? 🙈😅

My Nikon Z 50mm f1.8 S is an amazing lens...while I'm more of a zoom guy most of the time, there is always a 50mm in my bag.
Even tough I got a 50mm that I rarely use, I prefer my 70-200mm. The style and the bokeh are really nice even tough, I need room to use it, that's for sure
The 70-200 is beautiful. I don't often use one because of the distance needed, but every time I do I fall in love with it. As a 'one lens' option though that would be a tough one :)
At q3 secs into the video, my one lens would be the 50mm Leica Summicron. Perfection.
It really needs to be said though that it isn’t “equivalent”. When using a crop sensor, it’s just cropping the sensor. It’s not matching the equivalent distortion and compression. So your 35mm on a crop sensor might give you similar field of view to a 50mm but it’s not giving you the same overall look of a 50mm. It’s exactly the same as shooting a 35mm on a full frame and then cropping in post.
50mm is great focal length, but I would choose the 85mm every time if I could only own 1 lens
I love a wider angle of view therefore my choice will be 35mm f1.4 Sigma Art on my full frame Nikon body.

same thing with a lens ... telephoto is for noob and wide angle for professionals ... anybody can shoot a portrait with a 180mmf4 .... but shooting someone with a 28mm is another story
My main lens is consider it wide angle is rf 85L my second lens is 135mm, the 50mm is most boring focal :)
I'd prefer a 35mm as I like the extra space. But for one lens I like my Fuji 16-55mm 2.8.

for portraits I would go with the 85mm f1.8. On a crop sensor it would be 136mm. Both lengths great for portraits.
If its a prime lens - 50mm. A zoom lens - 24 to 120 f4 z.

versatility wise : any 28mm or 35mm in 35mm format
While I like 50mm focal length, "if I could only have one lens." That would have to be a high quality zoom that had 50mm in the range. I would say the Tamron 35-150 or 24-70 f2.8, would be my choice for ONE lens.
Also a good option, but I'm a prime guy. I don't actually own a zoom lens.
Excellent! I'm 67, been shooting commercially for 42yr (still)...and the "nifty-fifty" AIN'T....in my own book of USE. It's my LEAST used lens. And I started out 40+ ago as a PJ; then- and now, I prefer a 35/F1.4. The rest of my lens stable is all (Dx)zooms: 10-20, 12-24, 16-85, 70-200, 200-500. I KNOW I'm a vocal minority!!
I’m in your ‘minority’ too - and age bracket. When I got into photography as a lad everybody got a kit 50mm with their SLR. So they became ubiquitous and boring. Any desire to be be different (creative) always meant a swift move to wider or longer, depending on your interests. Now however i’m revisiting the 50mm. Why? Everyone now has a 24mm wide angle on their phone so thats the boring focal length for me in 2023. Of course I could just be ornery rather than creative
I have a 45mm, 50mm and a 57mm. I find that a 35mm is better at framing what my eye sees.
My camera is equipped with a crop sensor, 1.6. Which means the lens gives me the equivalent of an 80 mm on full frame.

I use the 50mm almost always! It's fast, sharp, little distotion, well made, least expensive even in Leica! Lots of lenses hinder your shooting. I do use zooms and variable focal lenses. But always bigger unless like me, use very small sensor pocketeable cameras! Don't laugh, they are equal! Don't be fooled by high mp numbers. Look at printers 300 dot per inch. not more!
And which lens do you use on your video? Not a 50 mm I guess.
Haha I usually do actually. I typically use a 35mm on my a6400 for my regular setup which is equivalent to a 52.5mm lens, but in my office it's a little tight so I used the 16mm for this video.
Assuming FF: 24-70.
Even though I took >80% of my images with 50mm, for some architecture shots that's too tight. I want something wider than 35mm to exaggerate the geometric proportion.
And on another situation, usually 50mm is not that tight, something 85-ish is preferrable.
Carrying a few primes isn't particularly fun. Yep the conclusion is 24-70. Call me a generalist photographer. I shoot whatever I find interesting, both indoor and outdoor.

Not really. The fovea of the eye where acuity is greatest more closely represents the field of view of an 85mm Len’s. That is where we look to get most information.
I don't agree with you. I can't stand the 50mm. I don't feel it natural at all and I hate its distortion. For photojournalism I love my 35mm f/1.4 and for portraits my 85mm f/1.2 RF. I'd never recommend a 50mm lens. BTW, the crop factor on APS-C (except for Canon) is 1.5X.

50mm is probably the most useless lens in my collection. Unremarkable. And I have 3-4 of them, including Sigma Art that was mentioned. To me, the one I can use for everything is 85/1.4; but that’s my style/preference. I understand that for most people it will be too narrow.
Depends on the person, and your photography. I have a 28, 35, 50, 85, and a 105
99% of the time I have the 50 on my camera. However I shoot film, and can imagine a 50 might be too tight on a crop sensor digital
U shud say 50mm is the lens u use the least.. Can't say it's useless, u just don't like to use it
My Canon RF 50 1.2L is supreme. I can put that one on my R6 and travel the world and be happy. Ok, I’d like a nice 24 also….
