Your tutorial videos are always so clearly demonstrated and explained. For those of us that don’t shoot nearly as much as you, these videos are solid gold. No complicated BS, no trickery. Just straight up useful information. Thanks Nathan!
2:46 Thanks Nathan, these are so good and the tips are much appreciated. Gearing up to take my studio work to the next level and i love 1 light setups. (as you can guess). Thanks for your contribution to the craft and industry. Love
With the optical snoot shots it looks like you have a lot of room ambient fill - very clear from the pullback shot at 5:56. So results are going to vary a lot depending on ones ambient room lighting. If you have a dark studio you may need an extra fill light to get similar looks.
Woah this is so wild!! Not sure if you remember but we worked together back in 2004 before you moved to Calgary, and this was a suggested video for me and I had to do a double take! Glad to see you're thriving and photography has been working out for you so well! Nice to see you again. The video is great too, I'll sub!
Thank you so much. Really helpful you talked about angles and where to position light/ objects. Challenges I've had in past was being told "oh you sorta place the light here", which is harder to recreate... so i appreciate you giving more guidance.
Great images and results, thank you for the video. Please put something on the boom arm end to prevent anyone catching it and taking an eye out, I use tennis balls myself.. saved my eyes many times 🤣
Thank you for doing these videos and sharing your knowledge. All The images are amazing. The image on the right @9:21 is deadly!! Will take time to absorb all this wealth of information. Hopefully won't take RUclips 8 hours to notify me on the next parts.
Great video and awesome photos Nathan! I got rid of my optical snoot (similar to the one you are using) and got a Nanlite Forza 60 (there's the option of the Nanlite FS60B for those on a budget) and their Projection Unit for the Forza 60 or 150 (the ones with the fm mount) The optical Snoot eats too much power and it was a bit of a hassle, the WYSIWYG of the led light and no loss of power output (in fact it magnifies it)
@@NathanElson That's great Nathan! If I may recommend check the Forza 60 and the 150 too, the only downside is that the fm to bowens adapter can't hold the weight of softboxes larger than 90cms, but I'm having too much fun with their projection unit and their fresnel for the Forza 60/150!
Nathan, I thought this was a great video. Some of us don't have a studio but do have a small collection of modifiers. For us, this was a useful video, for sure. I will of course watch your next more elaborate lighting videos, but this is likely to be the one that is most valuable to me. Keep up the great work.
Love this video. I have definitely use aleast two of these in most of my shoot. But definitely will be giving the last set up a go next time great video Nathan 👏🏾🙌🏾
Great videos! I've been enjoying learning from your content! I'm actually in the process of opening my first studio. Do you have any must have items that you could recommend?
Hi I’m just getting into photography I really love and admire this page and work how does the light trigger? Is it an accessory that attaches to the camera, does it come with the light? Sorry for new be question!
That was a very understandable explanation of how to use one light for portraits ! Definitely helped a lot ! and i cant wait to try those set ups as well ! Thank you !!!
I am new to off camera lights. For the overhead light and most shot, is the overhead light the main key light? Or continuous lighting? And I see flashlights popping in the video, are they coming from a flash behind you?
As always, dense, pragmatic, straight to the point and so amazing, beautiful, and inspiring Art photography and outstanding teaching. I love your 1,2,3 lights concept that revisits tranversally, in a new & very interestning way, ideas exposed in prior videos.
Love your work, have to point out an issue: you're sandbagging the wrong leg on your c-stand at 01:01 At other times in the video you've set it up perfectly. The way they're constructed is so that the tall leg goes under the weight, just as you have it. However, you're supposed to sandbag that leg, too. Sandbags do little if they're touching the floor, and the way the physics of c-stands work, the tall leg needs to be bagged in order to anchor the stability provided by the sandbags near the center of the pole and tall leg. By sandbagging the rear legs, you gain little as the bags often touch the floor, and any light+modifier that is heavy enough to lift those legs are going to use the front leg as a lever against them when it lifts up anyway. You might counter my criticism by pointing out that you've done it this way for years and never had a problem. That's great, however, I too have been using c-stands and rigging for many years in a professional setting, and my experience would suggest that you've simply been lucky to not have had to fly a light or modifier that has been heavy enough for it to topple over. Please don't take this criticism personally, I'm simply hoping to pass this on to you and keep you and your subjects safe, and hopefully some of the other watchers, too.
You mentioned you moved your optical snoot about 10 feet back…what if the shoot location doesn’t allow you to move the light back that far, would you still be able to use the snoot?
I may be blind here but where is the flash coming from? I have 1 light, Godox SL60 and the and the Neewer Z1. This one light setup will suit me better for now but I struggle in positioning the speedlight.
What's up my dude thank you so much for sharing your lighting tips I would love it if you would talk a little bit about your lights as well what you use why use them overheating problems etc.. don't have to make a full video on it but would you recommend some lights

Hello Nathan, I am a fan of your unique style of portraits I'd really love to see you doing a tutorial on silhouette portraits
Thanks, and if I shoot them sometime, I will show it :)
1:45 without a grid, we can aim the line with the softbox curve also
100%

That's solid. I have a Forza 500 and a bunch of the pavotubes. Great lighting, I will have a look at the Forza 60 as well.

Can you do these photos with a speedlight?
After this series, could you do series of videos lighting groups in the studio. Most videos on RUclips is always focused on on shooting an individual.
Solid idea, thanks!
Thanks for the great video! What is that white background that you're using?
9' white and a 9' thunder grey - both from Savage backdrops.
Great tutorial..... Thank you...
Now following here and Instagram 🙏🏻
Awesome! Thank you!
Thank you! ❤
I love the one light setup...This was an Annie Liebovitz special.
Thank you kindly!

do you think you could achieve the same results by using regular lights instead of flashes ?
So dig your lighting! Thanks for sharing! Inspo delux :)
What aperture do you usually shoot at?
So… so… awesome!
Thank you! Cheers!
Dope video!
Thanks!
