thanks for the review. Just bought the lens in black and on the black M-A, is a dream. Very discreet indeed. Had in mind to buy an old pre-asph Summilux 35 1.4 due to the soft rendering at 1.4, however 3000 euros vs. 500 on a street photography kit, Helian wins. Leica glow will have to wait for me. Maybe another time.
@@GenericPhotographer Good point. Had the Nokton 35 SC v2 and sold it. Regretting it now but will wait until Voigtländer offers this model without that silver nose ring. All black will be an instand buy.
Solid little lens. Looks well built. I think what attracts me the most it’s being so compact. Voigtlander for the price of Leica glass , it’s definitely a nice performant! Nice video Andrew 🤟
Thanks for the comment Marlon 😘. I’m honestly shocked at how good this lens is, the size is of course a big selling point. Compared with the Nokton, it’s nice to see how they can differ in rendering. It’s going to be a hot lens that’s for sure.
Great review, great scoop! You are the first on the internet to discuss the lens. I have been jonesing for a 40mm... thought this might be the one, but not sold on it. Microcontrast seemed low. I'll probably go for a zeiss 35mm. Great painting in the background too.
Thanks for watching! It’s a great lens, definitely has a good amount of contrast for my taste. Obviously a 35 distagon will be better, not sure about a biogon however. The painting was done by my fiancée actually, she appreciates the compliment 🙏.
Thank you for the detailed comparison with Summaron 35mm . I am gona buy LTM version for my Barnac Leica ⅢC~ This lens seems modern & at the same time renders nostalgic feel. I got LordⅣB/Highkor 40mmf2.8 by Okaya Kogaku Optical Company in Japan/Some 70 years old. This triplet lens seems quite a good counterpart for Voigtlander 40mm f2.8 ! Right?!
Hello, many thanks for this review that creatively demonstrates the potential of this lens. I notice you're using a Leica M2 film camera. Would you still recommend this camera as way to get into shooting film with a Leica? At present I work only with the Leica digital camera but would like also to get back to working in film. Stay well.
Thanks for watching. The film photos were taken with Kodak Pro Image 100 and Ilford XP2 400. I also made a video on using the lens on film: ruclips.net/video/Mt9QClvHEP0/видео.html
I have this lens and have truly enjoyed it's render on my M10. I have never had an issue of accidentally changing the aperture, I leave it at f2.8 and being a clicked aperture it just stays there. This lens makes the M10 disappear.
Hi Nice review, I just received my brand new copy from Cameraquest yesterday, somehow it focus slightly pass infinity, I tested with a few camera. wondering this common problem with this new lens?, I never have any thing like that in my rest voigtlander or leica lenses,
I may have to pick one of these up, new ltm glass. Should hold its value also, I would guess it won’t be in production long. Update….have a silver one on its way for my 3F. 🙂
Outstadning review, very informative and impressive art works. Well done!!! I'd like to invite you to join the "Voigtlander HELIAR 40mm F2.8 Asph" Group on the Flickr. Meanwhile, I'd refer your vaulable review on the Leica User Forum, LUF as well.
Hey how well does that goggled 35mm work on your M10?? I have been thinking about getting a goggled 35mm but don't want to if I cant use it on my m10. Additionally one of my favorite compact leica lenses is the 50mm elmar M f2.8 collapsable(the newer version)
@@GenericPhotographer I was considering Nocton 40mm f/1.4... does Heliar outperform it regarding far distrances - field curvature, focus shift, sharpness incliding corners?
Does this lens have the proper profile in LR? I recently received the Voigtlander 90mm APO skopar 2.8 M mount and realized there's no profile in LR. What would you do in this situation?
I reviewed both. Both are great lenses and are different in their own ways. The 2.8 is a modern lens at the end of the day and the f2 is a classic one. Opening up to f2 would sway me towards the cron / rokkor.
@@GenericPhotographer Thank you! In fact I found your other review a few minutes after writing my comment. Both very helpful 👍🏻 The Rokkor/Summicron does seem to provide two different lens characters in one neat package and I’ll definitely keep mine then. I only wish it could be adapted to LTM like the LTM Heliar can be adapted to M-mount. Such is life. Thanks again!
Great video, I’ve been thinking about getting this for my Canon P in the LTM, and then I can use it on my M2 or M5 with the adapter
It would be at home on any of them! Thanks for watching!
Great review Andrew! 👏🏼
I’d love to see your personal review about the Voigtlander Color Skopar 35mm 2.5, there’s no much information about it!
Thanks! Used to own a M mount one actually and I’ve used the LTM Version. Enjoyed them a lot however both of them were decentered :/
Nice review. I'd love to try it. I have a 35mm color skopar which I love for it's compactness and it's one of my favorites for black and white images.
For sure, that’s one tiny performer and this 40 is even smaller, hard to believe!

I just bought a Rollei 35S which has a 40mm/f2.8 Sonnar - it’d be interesting to see how it compares.
Been meaning to get my hands on a rollei 35S for some time. As soon as I do I’ll try to compare the two. Thanks for the suggestion!

Nice review. Have you any insights concerning potential focus shift of this lens?
I didn’t notice any shift at close distances
Would be a great compact travel/street lens on a Leica CL (film) with its tiny size
Excellent video and beautiful pictures. What adapter did you use with your xt2? Thanks
I have the LTM version of this. It does not seem to have that 2m notch. Maybe that is a VM-only feature. Fantastic lens, and your review is spot on.
What’s the difference of LTM and VM?
@@gurugamer8632 LTM = M39 thread (screw) mount. VM = Voigtlander M-mount (bayonet mount). Optics are the same

Good to hear. Enjoy it!
This lens really does kick ass ! Punches way over it's weight & size. The black version is here on the CLE.
Well, sold!

Andrew have you shot with the Heliar using zone focusing? Would really like to hear your thoughts if you have. Thank you
I did, it’s very haptic and at home on the streets. Zone focusing is easy once you get used to the ergonomics and focus scale.
@@GenericPhotographer Thank you
This is 40mm lens you frame using 50mm frame lines, will that cause problems with composition in final result ?
does your M3 have buddha ears? if so, what leather case do you have on your camera?
It does! It’s the artisan and artist leather case. Fits all my M cameras, even the M10 lol

wonder what frameline it will pull up on the M8. 35 or 50?
Did you get the silver or black ?
Which 40mm would you choose for landscape only in f5.6-11 to get best performance/image across the frame?
The Heliar

Would you prefer using 50mm frame lines over hack it to show 35mm?
I prefer using 50

I don’t use LR, but write Adobe and keystone yourself?
I wonder if anyone has made a comparison with the Minolta M-Rokkor 40/2 (Leica Summicron-C 40/2)

“It is a modern lens so it has a warm feel to the images”. Since when is this a feature of modern lenses?
